Last year we had a game between Harding and Crupi played to a capacity crowd at Crosby. I would like to have the same thing every week. We would pick a day and a time that would be considered the “Game of the Week”. Let’s say every Tuesday 9:30 or 6:30.
Before I give you all of the reasons why a “Game of the Week” is a difficult venture to embark upon, let me preface my comments by saying that I would love to see a game of the week since it is great for the league and does inspire and foster a sense of camaraderie amongst the teams. Last year the previously mentioned game was a lot of fun and it was great to see a lot of the people from around the league, but there were some very noticeable issues..

Having a “Game of the Week’ is far more complicated than anyone can imagine for various reasons.

1. Field.
Crosby is in fact the only field where you can eat and watch a game at the same time, the ambiance is great. Crosby is a distinct advantage over Ashton to host the Game of the Week.

However, the condition of the field, size of the field, and condition of the surrounding landscape make it less than desirable to play on. Balls are lost at an alarming rate, the field is too small and the infield is a mixture of low grade dirt and sizeable rocks making play on it less than palatable.

2. Then there is the issue of sponsorship.
Every week a new sponsor could be the “sponsor of the week” their funds would provide food for the fans and the two playing teams to a limit of course. Thus, the teams with local pubs as sponsors have the luxury of choosing any place they want to go without pissing off their own sponsors, since their sponsors are not affiliated with the bar business. So the question is where do they want to go after the game? I’m assuming it is someplace that has food as well. So there is a chance that you could coax those teams into staying at Crosby with the right incentives.
3. Teams!
I know that some of you think that everyone should come out and support every team equally, but the truth of the matter is…it is not going to happen. There are just certain teams that can draw crowds and others that simply hold no interest. Plumbers/Remax is a huge game and I’m sure everyone wants to see that game played out. No one wants to see Arms/Griffith or Grocer/Kavanagh. It just has no overall interest for everyone. You want to see the best game possible, and the only teams that will provide this are Wild Wing, Bisons, DST, State Farm, Harding, Crupi, Bistro, Angus and Kelsey’s! Thus you have the same teams over and over playing the game of the week. You can’t make people want to see a game they have no interest in seeing, unless you do something extremely spectacular to draw them in like having the “Budweiser Girls” at the game handing out free Leafs shirts…and that isn’t in the cards my friend.

It would be great to get everyone together on a Sunday, but it just isn’t feasible at this juncture. You could actually do a sponsor of the week thing, where each week a new sponsor could benefit from the game of the week played at their same location and after the game that said sponsor would host the after game party at their club. Once again you run into the problem of guys who have their own sponsor to support not showing up.

So it essentially breaks down to this, I like the game of the week thing, but I see some issues that we need to overcome.

Personally, I think that the "Game of the Week" is more of a made for TV thing than an actual event. However, it works for TV ratings but I don't know how you can re-create that exclusiveness unless the "Game of the Week" is the only game of the night, on the last day of the play week (a.k.a. Wednesday). The problem with that is, the game obviously would have to be played at Ashton. Also, you'd have to be able to let people know (and by people I include random pedestrians walking their dog and walking by the park, etc.) that this is THE game of the week. You have the scoreboard at Crosby where you could change the billboards around but that is pretty costly if it's only one game per week.
