Author TOPIC: A bad week...

It was a bad week for my Major League umpire brothers. First, “Country” Joe West had it out with the White Sox, tossing their manager and starting pitcher over a balk call that didn’t look much like a balk. Then, Bill Hohn ejected Houston pitcher Roy Oswalt, only to have MLB overturn his decision and told the umpire that he will be addressed "in a very stern way." On Tuesday night, Angel Hernandez tossed the Rays manager and Jays closer Kevin Gregg in a span of about 5 minutes. Angel’s strike zone was brutal all night.

Finally, there’s poor, poor Jim Joyce. An excellent umpire for more than 20 years, he blew an important call at the end of a game. By now, you all know the story. The 27th and final out of a perfect game, close play at first, runner clearly out, but Joyce calls him safe.

You know guys, $hit happens. Yes, even umpires make mistakes. Probably no one feels worse about what happened than Jim Joyce himself. "I just cost that kid a perfect game," a dejected and admirably forthright Joyce said afterwards.

I also think Armando Galarraga showed lots of class too. The next day, he delivered the Tigers’ lineup to the home plate umpire (you guessed it, Jim Joyce!), and the two guys shook hands and gave each other bear hugs.

That video will play forever and ever. Galarraga will be the “almost perfect” guy, Joyce the umpire who kicked the most important call of his life. But hopefully they will each move on, and not let this ruin their lives. There are WAY more important things in life than a missed call.

Have fun everyone,

The above post was very well written Jim. No one is perfect especially all of us as players in the USPL. Our umpires are spectacular, thanks for all you do.

Why are the reactions on the forum only for perceived negative comments?

If something is written as negative, everyone is all over it. Read a positive comment and we get no response like this one.

Why is it like that?

I agree. Jim, well done!

This league is special and the umpires are a huge part of it.
