I wish I had better news.

Based on reports from staff of standing water on grass fields and mushy infields, and the forecast for rain beginning early this afternoon and continuing overnight and through the day tomorrow, the fields will be closed tonight and tomorrow night as well. We will re-evaluate the fields on Thursday morning and determine a plan from there.

I would like to remind user groups that we will have staff monitoring the fields in the evenings. Playing when the fields are in this condition can cause damage that will last for months if not the whole season. If fields are damaged due to play in poor weather they may need to remain closed for an extended period of time.

Ok, this is just silly. I have played softball in Markham for 5 years and never have we waited this long? The city of Markham is being way too overcautious. How can Toronto have been playing for over 2 weeks now and USPL has gotten one single nite of softball in??? We have had a similar weather pattern as TO??? What is the league's plan for the postponed games???

I haven't been to the fields to comment on the standing water/condition of infields. Can someone who's been to them recently shed some light? I gotta say I'm pretty frustrated with the fact that they are cancelling games because of a forecast of rain that may or may not even impact the night's games. Should that not be a game time decision? How many times have we left our homes/work expecting rain and ended up with nothing. It hasn't rained in Richmond Hill today - at least not a significant amount. In a year when we've lost as many games as we have, we should be at least attempting to get games in when we can. Of course all of this may be irrelevant if someone tells me the fields are as bad as the town's making them out to be.

Hey Guys!

I stopped by Crosby today around 3:30 pm and it was indeed in 'playable' condition. There was a small amount of water gathered at home plate in each box, but with a minor effort that would have been cleared away. The grass in the outfield was a bit long and in some areas wet, but not enough to be considered dangerous.

Agreed, this is getting to be very frustrating as York Region and Toronto are playing ball despite less than ideal conditions.

Lets get this season rolling guys!

You need to voice your concern as a paying taxpayer to the person in charge of the fields / parks and recreation for the Town of Markham. They are the one you need to meet at the field to decide if it is playable or not. I too went by Crosby and the infield only had a couple of puddles in the batters box. This I viewed from my car in the lot. I didn't walk out onto the infield or on to the grass, so I can't comment on that. If it is as soggy as they say, then it's true it would cause more harm than good. Plus noone really wants to play in the rain, and guys...let's face it...it's non stop rain.
The damage would be more with the soccer/football fields than with the diamonds, but they couldn't just ban kids from those fields or a riot would break out.

Whoever the new town official is in charge of the fields, he's pretty anal about them being in good shape. We're also bound to lose more games if they put in a new fence.
