TOPIC: Morgan Park diamond removal |

| Hey guys, I know most of you have grown up and live around the downtown Markham core. I live right across the street from Morgan Park that has the local baseball diamond in it and the city has plans to have it removed to create large green space with walking paths as part of their "re-vitalization" initiative. There has been one area residents meeting that designs were proposed, and the reception to them was terrible. Since then the city has decided to try to move ahead without garnering any further support from the area residents, and have full intention to remove the diamond.
This diamond has the Friday night Womens league, and the kids Markham hardball league which many of the parents of the kids play in the USPL and the URSPL. They all love coming to this park in the middle of downtown Markham and I like being able to see ball going on every night of the week from my front porch.
The diamond is also used every recess by the kids and Franklin P.S. I know from going to Berczy P.S. for school how great it was to have a ball diamond to use every day, and I think it would be good for the kids to have.

I would suggest that all members of the USPL go to the link and fill in their objection to the remove of the ball diamond at Morgan Park built in 1968. Of interest the Crosby Arena was built in 1972 – is it and the Crosby Baseball Diamond next?
Let me warn those who are interested in sports such as baseball that it appears the City of Markham strategy is to remove/not build facilities for the traditional sports such as baseball. Next it could easily be Hockey. Note new facilities such as the new Cornell Community Facility does not include ice rinks or diamonds, when was the last time there were improvements to Crosby Arena or Markham Village Arena ice rinks?
Step up to the plate (pun intended) and vote AGAINST THE REMOVAL OF THE BALL DIAMOND FROM MORGAN PARK.

We had a residents meeting that we were informed of the removal in November of 2012. Since then there has been no contact from the city to the area residents. I have a meeting scheduled sometime today with the new area councilor to get more background on it. I will notify via this thread when I have more info for you.
Good news is that it appears the new area councilor is the one behind this petition and doesn't want to see the diamond removed either. The previous councilor was the one who wanted it gone, and his area conveniently was re-located to contain the new cornell project...

| Lots of us grew up playing at this park, swimming in the pool. I'm never seen a negative occurance at that location, this is just ridiculous.

Town Councillors (those that vote on these situations) have not been brought up with "traditional" sports. They don't care, they don't appreciate these sports.
Consider this next time you vote for your Ward Councillor. You do vote - dont' you?

| Interestingly, Frank Scarpitti (Markham Mayor) was quoted in an article in the Tor. Star Jan. 32/15 page H6 “they’re on soccer, hockey, basketball teams together” (referring to kids in Markham).
My comment is that Town Councillors (those that vote on these situations) have not been brought up with "traditional" sports. They don't care, they don't appreciate these sports.
