Just wondering what brought about the home run rule discussion again. What's wrong with the current rule? I think it adds a nice element to the game by forcing teams/players to adapt and change their swing. It also prevents teams from running up the score and can even quicken the game up. Please don't say changing the way you swing forces guys to go up the middle. I think we beat that discussion to death. The best home run hitters in the league are good enough to adapt to the situation, so why are we voting on it again?

It is difficult to hit a homer, so when I hit one why should I get penalized for it. I understand that at Crosby too many HR are hit. So to make everyone happy +2 should be a single or a double.

Last year on our team we had a guy hit one for the first time in 10 years...it was called a strike. This is supposed to be a more competitive league, I say get rid of the rule altogether and playball. Every team has a few guys that can hit them.

I've also seen some really ugly swings from guys trying not to hit them when they are plus two.

Spankie,
You are 100% accurate. If you hit one out you should not be reprimanded. It is a hitters game, swing away.

Jamie B you are correct in everything you say. Unlimited homeruns makes for a boring game.
If you are going to change anything, make a designated homerun hitter that can hit homeruns and cannot be intentially walked and let the plus 2 be for everyone else. Unfortuneately this rule has to go one way or the other. We tried to vote on having a +2 at crosby and open at ashton but the then president said you have to have it the same at all diamonds. Who says? Either way you put it, +2 or unlimited but you can't give the guy a single or double for not being able to keep the ball in play, that is ridiculous.

How bad would this years semi finals of been had Harding been up two home runs on DST with Goodwin up to the plate? There would not of been an opportunity to hit the game winning homer. I know the argument of "it's all strategy" but the rule penalizes an advantage one team may have.

I think the Grocer has a lot of fast runners so I say lets reduce the pitch runners to two instead of five...that otta take away an advantage and add a bit of strategy. (just an example)

As an outfielder I don't care if I have to walk around the fence a few more times to get a few balls, homers are rally killers most of the time anyway. The big hitters are going to hit them it's the guys that hit one or two a year that I'm posting for here. With the Monday night league created this league is supposed to be more competitive.

This has been talked about 4 ever.
I agree lets get rid of the home run rule!!
Now, where else do you want to play? Crosby is not suited for a men's Slo Pitch league, it is too small! What other diamonds are available to play at? How bout the one in Berczy Village? That is a nice diamond with approx the same dimensions as Ashton.

The reason why the home run rule came in was to allow us to play at Crosby.

Spankie, I hear what you are saying about the pinch runner analogy, but the reality is no one complains about 5 runners being too many and giving an advantage to another team. In fact, many teams could probably use a few more since they have to use one for some batters every time they reach base for physical limitation reasons. I think most teams still have to be quite strategic about when to use the 5 they have.
Houghts brings up a good point too that really Crosby is the only park that a +2 is even necessary. Games would be a joke if we didn't have this rule in place - at least at Crosby.
p.s. I hit one home run last year. If it was called back I wouldn't cry about it. It's part of the game as we voted.

Houghts: I completely disagree with leaving Crosby just to appease a few people on this home run rule...personally, Crosby is my favourite park to play at and it wouldn't make a lot of sense to have a Unionville Slo Pitch League that doesn't play any games in Unionville.

I agree with Houghts. That small park has affected too many games, both in the regular season and in the playoffs.Sure, it is fun to hit balls over any fence, but I do think that it has a negative affect on games. It does not accurately measure and reward the performance of two teams playing against one another.

Everyone can talk about strategy, but when a 250 foot popup clears the fence, how is that strategy?

I feel that the league has overstepped it's authority by not allowing players to vote on the issue of whether or not a HR rule should be in effect.
I want to hear all sides of this issue. I for one do not think it is fair that rule changes can happen without ALL the players stating their opinions on the matter. We still have a few days before the AGM, and I would like more dialogue on the issue. I would like to vote on the issue and I think it is only fair that we all hear what has to be said.
It's probably going to pour harder than a two clitted cow pissing on a flat rock, so why not continue to voice our opinion until we can discuss this issue, in a legitimate meeting! It is the ONLY FAIR WAY TO GO. I say get rid of the HR rule or make the penalty a single.

The rule was voting in at the AGM a few years ago. Nobody from the league exec is saying it can't change. Show up at the AGM and raise the issue. The guys that never show up year after year are the ones that complain the most!

Come prepared Wed with your argument and see how many arms are raised in your favor!
