Loftus Breaks Record in Tight Contest
The inevitable became reality when, in the second inning, Bob Loftus struck out his 94th batter of the season, breaking the previous record of 93 set last season by George Alles.
After that, though, the Pittston Park Boys had all they wanted and then some as the Flying Dragons proved that their last matchup with PPB wasn't their typical showing. The Dragons never gave up and were able to manage three hits against Loftus (tying the most given up by PPB this season) and a run in the sixth, but to no avail. Pittston emerged with a 3-1 victory and improved to 7-1 on the year. The Dragons fell to 4-6, officially dousing any chances of back-to-back playoff appearances.
R.J. Kay went 4-for-6 and Loftus was 2-for-5 with a run scored and and RBI in the win. Tom Pisano added what would prove to be the game-winning RBI in the first.
Tom Hannon paced the Dragons from the dish, going 2-for-4 agains the dominant righty. Hannon also scored the Dragons' sole run. Kevin Sickle managed the only other hit for the Flying Dragons - a two-out double in the fourth.
Loftus continued his dominant ways on the mound, striking out 17 en route to his league-tying fifth win of the campaign.
Mike White went the distance for the Dragons, allowing the three runs on nine hits, striking out five in the loss.
PPB and FD are both off this week and will resume play on Patriots Day (9/11). PPB will battle for playoff position with Leary's Kork & Keg at 4 p.m., and FD will look to put a damper on the repeat dreams of Rynk's Sports Bar beginning at 12 p.m.
