Pittston Struggles Early, Emerges Late
The Pittston Park Boys found it difficult to put runs on the board in the early going, but were able to keep a 1-0 lead and build on it late to emerge with a 3-0 victory over Pizza Bella. With the win, the Pittston Park Boys improved to 10-1 overall, while Pizza Bella fell to 3-5.
The Park Boys got an early one run lead thanks to a walk and a miscue. Tom Pisano had a lead-off walk, and would later score following a miscue on a single by Bob Loftus, Jr., giving Pittston the 1-0 lead.
Bob Loftus and Tom Hannon would then have a great pitcher's duel over the next four-plus innings. Loftus struck out 14 of the 15 batters that he faced in the first five innings, helping to keep his team in front. Hannon utilized strikeouts and fly balls to keep Pizza Bella withiin striking distance.
Shannon Claherty got what proved to be the only hit for Pizza Bella in the bottom of the fourth - a single off Loftus.
Pittston finally was able to put on two insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Dave Kane and Loftus hit back-to-back solo home runs to give them a 3-0 lead.
Loftus would then strike out the side to end the upset bid by Pizza Bella.
The Park Boys got another outstanding outing by Loftus (4-0), who allowed just one hit. He struck out 17 in the win, walking just three.
Loftus also paced the Park Boys at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a home run and an RBI. Josh Munoz added two hits for the winners.
Hannon (0-1 with PB, 2-1 overall) took the loss for Pizza Bella. Hannon gave up the three runs on eight hits, striking out five and walking four.
Claherty got the lone offensive output for Pizza Bella, going 1-for-2, while also recording two walks.
Pittston will next face Bunch O'Swingers in a double-header on Sunday, July 30 beginning at 4 pm. Pizza Bella's next game is scheduled against Mericle Real Estate at 2 pm on Sunday, July 30.
