Car Design Rules

1. Car has to meet the safety and design rules to be permitted on track.
2. Absolutely no drive mechanisms. Gravity propulsion only.
3. Absolutely no ballast weight permitted.
4. The vehicle must be all wooden frame. No go-cart chassis’s, bed frames, wheelchairs, skateboards etc. No steel, plastic or fiberglass bodies. Wood only. All cars must meet the original intent of the derby.
5.Cars must not exceed 7 feet in length or 3.5 feet in width. This will include any decorative attachments such as exhaust pipes, spoilers etc.
6. Wheels must not exceed 35cm(13.75in.) in diameter.
7. No wheel bearings are allowed. Bearings will result in disqualification. Wheel center axle shaft holes must run directly on the axle shafts. Sleeves in the wheel that can move independantly from the wheel itself are disallowed. Wheels must be removable at inspection time to ensure fairness of competition.
8. Numbers must be affixed to both sides of the car in large contrasting colors.
9. Standard hard axle grease is allowed only prior to competition. Applying grease during competition will result in disqualification. Liquid oil is not permitted.
10. Steering mechanisms must be set up using a steering wheel and cable and pulley system only. No direct steering mechanisms are allowed. No direct foot or rope-operated steering systems permitted. (Rubber coated Clothesline cables are a perfect choice) (fig. 1)
11. Braking with foot pedal and cable only. Brakes must operate on both rear wheels equally. No direct or rope operated brakes allowed.(fig. 2)
12. Brakes are to be able to hold car at the starting gate without assistance. If the brakes cannot hold the car, it will not compete.
13. Drivers must demonstrate to the satisfaction of the “safety board” that the braking and steering systems are fully functional.
14. IF A CAR DOES NOT FULLY MEET THE RULE REQUIREMENTS, IT WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO COMPETE.
15. If at any time during the competition the brakes or steering system of any car fail for any reason, the car will not be permitted to continue if repairs cannot be made to the satisfaction of the safety board.
16. COMPETITOR PROTEST FORMS will be introduced to ensure compliance with all rules.

Derby Rules & Regulations

1. Participation open to all persons between age 8 and 17.
2. A NON-REFUNDABLE $5 entry fee will be required with registration.
3. Drivers to compete in 1 age group, either 8-12, or 13-17. Age as of Race Day 2006.
4. A safety board comprised of 3 adult volunteers will be established to inspect all entries and determine if the entries meet safety and design requirements.
5. One time qualifying run per entry to establish pole position and race lineup.
6. One driver per vehicle only. No sharing of cars.
7. The driver that qualifies in time trials must be the driver to compete in the race.
8. Competitors are responsible for design of own cars, purchase lumber, parts, paint, and any other materials required. Sponsorship is highly encouraged.
9. All drivers must wear protective head gear. C.S.A. approved motorcycle, A.T.V., or snowmobile helmets. Bicycle helmets are not permitted.
10. Each driver should obtain practice before race day to ensure proper working order of their car and eliminate long delays in the inspection process.
