Derby History

Year 1: The first year saw three entrants. These were Shawn Lambert (Car 3), James Drover (Car 999), and Nathan Martin (Car 00).

Year 2: The second year saw five entrants. These were Lucas Lambert (Car 66), Shawn Lambert (Car 3), James Drover (Car 999), Devin Avery (Car 10), and Nathan Martin (Car 00).

Year 3: The third year was when interest really picked up, this year saw six entrants, and word was spreading like the flu in a city. This year's entrants were Shawn Lambert (Car 3), James Drover (Car 999), Damian Stacey (Car 2), Emily Whalen (Car 00), Lucas Lambert (Car 13), Tyler Baker (Car 10)

Year 4: In 2004, the lineup saw eight cars ready to race, the top number so far. But word was still spreading. Driving in 2004 were Shawn Lambert (Car 3), James Drover (Car 999), Damian Stacey (Car 7), Tyler Baker (Car 10), Troy Price (Car 1), Lucas Spurrell (Car 2), Emily Whalen (Car 08), and Darrin Marsh (Car 13).

The competition over the years has gotten much closer, coming down now to the reaction time of the drivers when the green flag drops. Shawn Lambert in his #3 car schemed after the late Dale Earnhardt, a professional NASCAR racer. The past year, Shawn only won by inches over Tyler Baker (Car 10). Tyler had recorded the fastest time on the 260 ft. course - a blistering 11.87 sec. This time was recorded in one of the Round Robin races. The reaction time when it really counted went to Shawn Lambert. This year was the first year the events would be held during dark hours.

"I was coming down over the hill. At first [right off the line] I couldn't see him alongside me, but about halfway down I saw his car start to come into view. 3/4 way down the hill I could look across and see him. We cross the finish line, the track levels out, and the glare of the headlights of a car was all I could see. In my blindness, I hit the brakes. I turned over in Tyler's lane because we hit together, turning him across the lane and partly into the ditch. The front of his car hit my wheel and it came partly off. Neither one of us knew who won at this point. Fans had mixed says, but the officials of the derby told me I had done it again. I had held my title of division champion for one more year at least. There was still one race to go, against Darrin Marsh for the overall champion. Tyler was a little disappointed, but still happy to have the opportunity to come that close. I went on to outrace Darrin, and kept my title." Shawn Lambert

All the other years the derby was held in daytime hours. The third year was ended with a big finish too. The derby had been action-filled all day, but the last race had everyone biting their nails over who was to be crowned overall champion. The race was on between Shawn Lambert (Car 3) and Damian Stacey (Car 2) to see who would face Lucas Lambert (Car 13) in the final race. Their cars stayed pretty well neck and neck as they came down over the hill. But in the end, Shawn won, and advanced to face Lucas. The race was pretty close, with Shawn squeezing out another victory. The second year was probably the most memorable, the closest finish in history was set this year. The race was between Lucas Lambert, and Shawn Lambert. The margin of victory was only about 5 inches. This year was the year competition was on, everyone, whether they had a car or not, wanted to beat Shawn.

The first year of the derby saw the most spectacular crash. James Drover careened into the guardrails after his left rear wheel collapsed. He hit the sand and flipped his car over onto its side. "I'm okay, wooo!" he exclaimed after crawling away from his battered car.
