TAMPERING?

March 26, 2012
BUZZARDS BAY - Mike Walker, ex-slugger of Scenic Roots, said in a recent interview that , "That he didn't have any fun playing on Sundays. That is why I left. I knew a while ago that I was going to leave." Walker SR's #3 hitter and one of the up an coming players 2 years ago, never lead SR back to the championship or even a play-off win. Posting a 13-12 regular season record and 0-2 in the play-offs, which Walker did not play in either one of them. Walker was suppose to be the savior of the 3-time champs. He was to help them get younger and continue their dominance. He helped land Brandon Berriault last seson, but they stilled finished at 6-6. in 2011. One teammate said, "He was a great teammate and a fun guy to play with. He will be missed, especially after we revamped our team." SR's has gone with a bunch of new players and cleaned house once it was revealed that Walker was leaving. SR have lost, Walker (Dyanasty), Berriault (Dynasty), Brian Berriault (retired) Justin Haley (The Pound), Boog (Troopers), Shayne King (FA - retired), Tim Ferriera (Troopers) and Kevin Gula (injury - Hip). They lost their entire outfield.

Walker also said, "I would hang out with the Dynasty as the old guys in SR would go home to their families. There is nothing wrong with that, I am just not at that point in my life. If I have a Sunday off and I have a game., I am looking to hang out most of the afternoon. " Owner, Jeff Kutil is on record saying that Walker never called to let him know he will not re-sign with the team. Only Boog called him personally."I have contacted league officals about tampering from 2011. The Dynasty, asked many SR players to join them in 2012. "They were not discreate about it either", said one player. League Officals, have not commented, especially since there are new officals this year and with a SR player in charge. "This could get messy" an ex-official said via conference call.

Frankie Lydon talks Rival

March 27, 2012
BUZZARDS BAY, MA. – Piper Beau’s owner Frankie Lydon on Monday gave the rival The Dynasty a thumbs up for their acquisition of slugger Mike Walker.

“I think it’s exciting; I think it’s a lot of fun,” Lydon said from the BBSL owners meetings. “You know, the situation is about our rivalries ... and I’m a big fan of Mike Walker. I love that he’s into spirituality, and I think it makes the rivalry an even bigger rivalry.”

Lydon then went on to say with a smile, “I don’t know if there will be enough media hype around the game.”

Dynasty acquired Walker after a season long tampering in 2011 and picked up Bradon Berriault- from Scenic Roots in February. The Dynasty also had to pay $22.5 million to facilitate the two players.

Lydon wouldn’t discuss whether the PB had any interest in Walker. But it's no secret PB’s coach Tim Lydon has always had high praise for Walker.

“I know that both our head coach and I are big fans of Mike Walker and appreciate his unique skills,” Lydon said. “He’s just a great young man, and we’re looking forward to the rivalry.”

Billy Waters Apologizes...Kind of...

March 28, 2012
CAPE COD, MA -- The Pound’s manager/outfielder Billy Waters issued a statement Tuesday apologizing for a remark he made that was part of a column in Tuesday's Hammerin' Hank ‘s Buzzards Bay Gazette.

"I apologize for my thoughtless choice of words that appeared in print earlier today. I meant no harm, and I am sorry to all I offended," the statement read.

Waters used the word "retarded" in response to being questioned about the behavior of other owners about complaining about how team this year are “taking/stealing” players from one another.

Reports came out after the season of owners buying pitchers of beer at the field and in bars for players the owners would love to play for them in this 2012 season. The Pound went 4-8 in 2011 and barely made the playoffs by one game.

"Guys having a beer after their start have been going on for the last 10 years with other players from other teams. The tampering talk is retarded," Waters was quoted as saying.

“I like our team this year, got mostly veterans,” Waters finished with.

Fan Club Sold for 50M

April 4, 2012
WAREHAM -- While Buzzards Bay sports fans celebrate the sale of the Fan Club to a group headlined by John Coleman for a record price of $50 million, several sport economists believe the group paid close to twice as much for the team than it is actually worth due to the total makeover of the entire team. The vets have left."

Pricey Acquisition
The 50 million dollar price tag for the Fan Club is the largest sale price paid by any current MLB owner. Here's that list:
Team Year Price
Fan Club '12 $50M
Piper Beaus '09 $32M
MM '10 $30M
The Pound '11 $22M

Prior to the sale, many economists believed the price tag of the Fan Club would surpass the $32 million the Piper Beaus sold for in 2009, which was the most ever for an BBSL team. Most figured it would be around the $25 million figure the Miami Dolphins fetched three years ago, which was a record price for a professional sports team in North America. In the end, the sale of the Fan Club shattered both marks and set a world record, surpassing even the $47 million Manchester United went for in 2005.

"It's the craziest deal ever; it makes no sense. That's why you saw so many groups drop out," said Mark Rosentraub, a University of Michigan sports management professor. "I don't get it. The numbers just don't work. It doesn't make business sense. Nobody came up with this number. Under the most favorable circumstance you broke $1.1 billion with $1.4 billion getting crazy.

One of the biggest reasons the Fan Club sold for $50 million is the regional sports network battle currently being waged in Buzzards Bay between Fox and Time Warner. Last June, commissioner Steve Brecsia rejected a proposed 20-year, $3 million deal between the Fan Club and Fox. The decision, according to Fan Club owner Cal Lake, pushed the team into bankruptcy and forced him to sell the team. Last December, Scenic Roots agreed to a new deal with Fox worth at least $2.5 million over 20 years, which helped the team land Patrick Schultz and Nick Silva in free agency. Last year, the Minutemen announced they would be leaving Fox to join Time Warner for a deal reportedly worth $5 million over 25 years.
The Fan Club is not expected to sign a similarly lucrative deal with Fox or Time Warner, or they could simply start their own regional sports network.

"If you take the Fox deal or try to start your own network that's going to eat down your capital cost and you've just lost a huge share of revenue," Rosentraub said. "That's a source of revenue that other teams depend on and that's the issue. SRs are swimming in cash and the Minutemen are swimming in cash because they didn't have these huge capital costs and their TV income is coming into the general operating fund. Well, you're not going to get that with the Fan Club.

"I still don't understand how you could pay $50 million for the Fan Club.”Look at everybody who has ever been a partner with the Fan Club. I think they would tell you to get stock in Lake because you're going to need it. Maybe he'll have a life-changing experience but you have a guy with a track record of getting into legal action with his partners on deals going back more than a decade. You may end up spending a great deal of time in court and paying legal fees against your new partner. I don't get that one. I know people who backed out of the deal because they didn't want any kind of partnership with him."
Perhaps the best thing the new ownership group has going for it is that John Coleman will become the new face of the franchise. While Joe Repetti will be a minority owner and Ray Simmons, chief executive officer of the financial services firm Simmons Partners, will become the controlling owner, Coleman's face on the team will help revitalize the image of the team after it was soiled under Lake in recent years.

"I think Coleman will help revive the brand in Buzzards Bay. He has deep connections with sports fans in this town," said David Carter, a sports marketing consultant and executive director of the USC Sports Business Institute. "He will play a huge role as the public face of the team. It changes the perception of the team and fans have to believe that perception will become reality. His track record of being involved in the community, his track record of being able to do well with the media and his understanding of what makes BB tick is going to be important."

Fan Club has removed all connections with the old team.

Minutemen's Freire, reflects on the Past and Future

April 9, 2012
FALMOUTH -- For Minutemen owner Carlos Freire, being back in BB brought out little sentimental value.

Freire made his first trip back to the arena where his team won last season's championship, as the Minutemen were receiving their rings at Piper Beaus Restaurant on Thursday night. The Minutemen beat Piper Beaus in three games in the Final.

His ring was at home, too, where it typically stays. Freire said he wore it once at home with his kids, and that's about it.

"Do I look like a jewelry guy to you?" Freire asked before the game. "Trust me; I don't have to tell anybody we won."

It's been a somewhat up-and-down off season for the Minutemen, who has added much star power to their 2012 team, but has not had a lot of off-season commitment for the off-season workouts like years in the past. They also did not have a team for the Fall Season in BB.

Nonetheless, it's no surprise that Freire will enjoy this season -- and defending the crown and going for a Three-Peat. Trying to match the run of Agway from 2005-2007, who won 3 titles.

"Yeah, no question. Because you got one and now two. There's a lot of guys who came close and never got one," Freire said. "It's certainly more fun. Again, it's a funky season, so we haven't had a lot of time to enjoy it.”

The Minutemen seemed to be echoing their owner on the question of sentiment that comes with being back in BB. At this point in the season, there's bigger priorities than a trip down memory lane.

"It's a good memory," Minutemen coach Jonathon “JT” Taylor said. "But look, we can't be focused on that ... otherwise we'll get our brains beat in. All that was great, but it's in the past."

So, too, is Agway’s 3-Peat wins in the 2005-‘07 Finals.

But Freire was reminded of that as well on Thursday, when he again saw the walls of photos on certain walls in the arena, part of Agway’s tribute to those championship teams.

"Walking by all the pictures from 05,'06 & 07, scene of the crime, that's what comes to my mind," Freire said. Who was on a couple losses to Agway when he was the first basemen for the hated Fan Club.

Minutemen are ranked #1 for the pre-season for the 2nd straight season.

Old Man Q is Motivated

April 9, 2012
BUZZARDS BAY -- Jeff Kutil didn't need much motivation to offer a soliloquy on motivation after Wednesday's practice.

"I’m motivated. I hear y’all calling me old. I hear y’all calling me ... older. Weathered. I’m motivated, it doesn’t take much to motivate me, man," Q said. "I’m older in softball years, but in life, I’m 30-something. I think some of y’all -- I’m looking at your [scans the hair of reporters in front of him] gray hair, no hair, hat hair, beautiful hair, wet hair, ummm, no comment. I’m just motivated. I like to use that word. “

"The first half of the off-season wasn’t the most pleasurable for us. We lost players to Free Agency, which happens, but how guys left was not the greatest. I felt I could be better at the communication as well. And I’ve been working towards that. I’ve been giving myself a true analysis in the mirror, looking at myself and telling myself what can I do better on and off the field. And I’ve been going towards that. I know some things I can get better at, and I’ve been trying to do that. It doesn’t take much to motivate me, man.

"I don’t watch too many of you guys’ interviews. It’s garbage. But the ones I do catch, it's just an opinion. It’s what it is. It puts a spark under me and I like that. Playing against younger talent that’s supposed to be prolific and supposed to be above average -- but I’m old, though. You know? Again, for the third time, it doesn’t take much to motivate me. That’s what it is. That’s what you see."

Asked, then, if he was motivated to go against Dynasty’s Mike Walker, the key asset delivered by Scenic Roots to them, "I not motivated," before chuckling. Then quickly barked: "Next question."

Alas, Q didn't want to talk walker. Yet he had plenty of other opinions. Here's a few highlights from his post practice confab, including some eyebrow-raising thoughts on returning to the field on April 14th:

“You can count us out year after year, but we will rise up again… Don’t doubt us this year.”

The Team We Love to Hate

April 11, 2012
FALMOUTH -- BBSL conspiracy theorists suspect the league of looking the other way when it comes to bats in general and illegal ones they shy away from.

Hogwash, all of it, though some of the homers in the play-offs in 2011 did make you wonder.

Further, The Chest Bumps inadvertently created a team of anti-heroes, which was cemented by the Chest and shoulder bumps during games and after a big hit. The rally where the MM promised the BBSL a dynasty, is another way it makes them a target on their chest.
Villains are good for games of any ilk. Fans often relish cheering against, as much as for, someone. Professional wrestling concocts its own roles and narratives. "Real" sports cannot do so, but any organic results are welcome.

In the BBSL, the good guy/evil guy dynamic has been lacking since the cocky Agway boys three-peated who took on their old mates of the FC, dating back almost 5 years. This time, the league could not have scripted a better scenario. After MMs declaration, the team became the BBSLNews Network, as the ones to hate. This all before they even won anything.

When the MM lost in Falmouth the last two seasons, the media, fans and players trashed them or even cheered. They we down 21-1 in game one in 2010 vs. Chad Pelletier’s Timeless Stoneworks. The media, fans and players tuned in to delight in their misery. The same happened when the MM lost to Paul Gonsalves’s team in 2011. The MM will not return to the Falmouth League in 2012, they will join BB Night league and become a fixture in BB.
When the MM straightened up later and won the championship in BBSL, the media reminded their audience that anything less than a title amounted to failure. Viewers tuned in, fearing collusion by the MM would pave a shortcut to a championship.

Never mind that admirers of the sport set aside their ill will to applaud the MM's offensive juganot and praiseworthy team defense. Even the haters would have to admit MM played the right way on the field. But their tactics off the field or after plays is what made them be hated.

While the Fan Club vs. Scenic Roots might have been the preferred foes, the league lucked out with Piper Beaus. The Big Bad Wolf made for an ideal counterpoint to the loveable PBs. (wink wink)

Players and fans exulted when MM deleted their name from the Great Players Never to Win a Ring list on the Cape; well they still have not won on the cape. They came off to win a beer drinking league of older players who mostly played Sundays and a percent played during the week once or twice. They got their chest bumping, celebrating asses handed to them two years in a row in Falmouth, but took down the BBSL two years in a row.

The harsh truth is, they is being punished, in part justifiably, by his vast potential and subsequent comparisons to Agway/SR/FC, the greatest teams of all time. Do they have the talent? Oh yes they do and this year is no exception. But they need two more titles to be considered better than Agway of the mid 2000s. They need 2 more to top the FCs run of the decade making it to 9 title games and winning 3. If they don’t win another one, they will be in the group of the Rock Hounds and Rats franchises.

The game has changed, bats are better or altered, and players are starting to play much younger. This year the pressure is on them more than ever, they have an all-star team and should run away with it. Another reason people will hate on them.

Since 2000 here are the teams in the title game with the winners.
'00 FC vs. Sagamore Rats winner: Rats
'01 FC vs. Sagamore Rats winner: FC
'02 FC vs. Rockhounds winner: RH
'03 FC vs. Rockhounds winner: RH
'04 Rockhounds vs. Broughams. winner: Broughams
'05 FC vs. Pirates winner: FC
'06 FC vs. Agway winner: Agway
'07 FC vs. Agway winner: Agway
'08 Smooth Moves vs. Agway winner: Agway
'09 FC vs. Smooth Moves winner: FC
'10 FC vs. MM winner: MM
'11 MM vs. Piper Beaus winner: MM

Too bad they cannot fix it with a few more talented players. Talent takes you so far, a player’s will take you to greatness.

Kevin Gula wants to play another year

April 12, 2012
FAIRHAVEN -- Kevin Gula has played in 13 career home openers in Buzzards Bay.

Yet Gula insisted Wednesday, on the eve of the Scenic Root’s pre-season team meeting, that "I want to play another year, whether it is 2012 or 2013" Gula told jj.com.

Despite turning 35 on April 20th and struggling throughout this off-season with various hammy, hip and groin ailments that have shelved him for 4 months -- including all of the Scenic Root’s pre-season workouts -- Gula says he's determined to play on to try to help SR add to the championship titles and end the Minutemen’s run at a 3-Peat. Gula has appeared in 7 title games and won 4 out of the 7 over his 13 years in the BBSL.

Sources with knowledge of the Scenic Root’s thinking likewise indicate that management is determined to find a way to re-sign the former Colby-Sawyer star in free agency even amid the roster clearout that SR has done this off-season to create the requisite salary-cap space to pursue young talent in free-agency in 2013. Gula's most recent three-year contract expires at this season's end, but he long has been regarded as one of the SR' point men for recruiting free agents. Sources say, furthermore, that Gula has a good relationship with Jeff Kutil from their times playing together over the last 13 years.

One source close to the situation, asked if bringing Gula back remains part of the SR' plans, said: "Absolutely."

Furthermore, team sources say the 7-time All-Star happily would move into a backup role or move to Right Field if (Pat) Schultz works out and fills in the left center spot.

On the current squad, though, Gula's teammates openly have longed for his return after a hip injury forced him to sit out. Although he's generating career-low numbers in virtually every category except avg. hitting .600 for the first time 5 years.

Gula returned to the lineup in the near future is unknown from a health standpoint.

This will be 3rd time Gula has missed at least 4 games in a season.

Brian “Sully” Sullivan OK with Change

April 13, 2012
WAREHAM -- Mike Walker never played a play-off game for Scenic Roots and with Brian “Sully” Sullivan one of the Scenic Roots' most valuable players in storied franchise history. Plain in simple, it hard to miss a guy that never was there when we really needed him over the last two seasons.

Sully was critical of Mike Walker in a recent interview, saying he wasn't sad the DH was gone. Is he off-base?

But the thirteen-year infielder wasn't upset to see Walker shipped out of the SR’s club house to make room for Pat Schultz. Sully said Thursday in an interview with the jj on jj.com in Wareham that he prefers playing with his boy and slugger such as Schultz.

"It's a business decision," Sully said, via jj.com. "I ain't going to say I was sad because the only thing I remember is that he was not there come play-off time. You gotta go back and look at the rest of the games. He wasn't having a great year either. He was said to be the Next best player…. He is more of an DH as Coach had a hard time finding the right spot for him, but I don't want to talk bad about Mike. But, hey, I am happy we got Pat."

Sully, who has 4 titles in BBSL has been a staple in the infield for SR/Agway/FC and has bee a top fielder for his entire career.

Sully also said the considerable coverage Walker received in the media rubbed some players -- including himself -- the wrong way.

"Everything on BBSL was all about Mike," Sully said. "That bothered some players, too, because they would say, 'Mike Walker Time.' I felt like it was a team thing. If it wasn't for the defense most of the time, there wouldn't be no supposed 'Mike Walker Time.' "

STU Rips BTB, then says "Sorry"

April 17, 2012
BUZZARDS BAY -- Ken Stuart questioned BTB's commitment to the game in his weekly television interview, then apologized to the Trooper’s Pitcher on Monday.

During an interview aired Sunday night on BSSL-TV, Stu said he didn't think BTB was "as physically or emotionally into the game." On Monday morning, Stu said he apologized when BTB came into his office and asked for an explanation.

"I don't know if he accepted my apology," Stu said. "It was sincere."
BTB had a poor spring training and is batting .200 (6 for 30), but Stu said his comments weren't aimed at motivating him.

"I'm more confused than anything," BTB said. "Everybody knows I go out and play the game as hard as I can." If Stu's intent was to have BTB's teammates rally around him, it may have worked.

"I know he plays as hard as anybody I've ever seen in my life. I have his back and his teammates have his back," Fat Jesus said. "I really don't know what Stu's trying to do, but that's not the way we go about our stuff around here. He'll figure that out. The whole team is behind BTB."
Asked if Stu was trying to motivate BTB, Jesus said, "maybe that works in tournament" -- where Stu used to manage.

Stu took over on Dec. 1, when the Troopers decided to play in the BSSLfor the 2012 season.

Stu said that in the interview he was just answering a question about how BTB may be feeling during early season struggles.

"I don't think he's as physically or emotionally into the game as he has been in the past for some reason," he said in the interview after the Troopers’ 27-13 loss on Sunday. On Monday, Stu said, "I should have been more specific. Physical is about your swing, emotional is about not being happy when he doesn't hit a ball off the wall."

He said he talked Monday with Stu about the manager's comments but gave no details. BTB said he doesn't think his passionate approach to the game has changed.

"I go out and just play the game. It doesn't matter one way or another. There are things that happened over the years with a lot of different things in baseball," he said. "For me it's not an issue."

Stu said he doesn't want BTB to think "I was jabbing at him."

"I'd be surprised if BTB didn't know I was totally behind him," he said. "We're big boys. I think he'll get it. If not, I'll talk to him a lot more."

Call Me the Only Brotha on Agway

May 10, 2012
WAREHAM – Derek “D-Train” Tavares’ Softball book publicity tour is still having ramifications. Last week, he revealed in interviews that using coke was regular pregame fixture. But overlooked in the drug revelations was Tavares's comments on former teammate Jeff Kutil, whom he called a racist who used racial epithets on a daily basis.

Kutil, who played with Tavares during Tavares's tenure with Agway in from April 2009 to May 2009, vehemently objected to the accusation on BBSL’s Weekly Radio Show, The Fat Slow Guys.

"Absolutely, positively, 100 million percent, I am not a racist, I am not a bigot," Kutil said. "You have a delusional drug addict who let not only his family down, but his team, the city of Wareham, Agway when it counted most. Now he wants the good people of Wareham to go out and spend money on this garbage to support his habit. I find that extremely amusing."
Kutil' wife also joined the radio program, defending her husband and Kutil's father, who Tavares said was the source of his racism.

"I have never heard either one of them use the word that starts with an ‘N’ in public or even in private," said Jessica Kutil. "They never used that word. We have relatives that are African-American in our
immediate family. They are so hurt."

Tavares's book, "Call Me the Only Brotha on Agway," will be released this summer. Tavares was released by Agway in May of 2009, due to Derek never showing up.

Feds: Man trafficked hundreds of pounds of fake Viagra

May 10, 2012
HYANNIS -- A Central Cape man charged with trafficking hundreds of pounds of counterfeit Viagra and Cialis — drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction — is slated to make his initial appearance in Barnstable federal court Friday.

Shawn Marucci of Hyannis already signed a plea agreement in the case, admitting to packaging and shipping pills he received from two companies in China.

He faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $2 million for a count of trafficking in counterfeit goods. Marucci, makes 7.75 Million for Wareham Taxi.

According to Marucci's plea agreement, federal agents made several undercover purchases from the two companies throughout 2010 that the cape man shipped.

Those shipments contained hundreds of counterfeit Cialis pills, records show.

In October 2010,U.S. Feds seized a parcel containing 1,312 counterfeit Viagra pills that Marucci was trying to import into the country from China.

The address on the parcel was Marucci's post office box in Monument Beach.
Soon after, ICE sent Marucci a notice alerting him to the seizure, but he continued to import and ship the fake drugs.

From October 2010 to December 2010, Marucci mailed 640 shipments of counterfeit Viagra and Cialis, with a total weight of roughly 365 pounds.

The league did not respond to my request to an interview.

MM fan who crashed Carlos Freire’s Home-Run jailed, misses son’s first birthday party

June 5, 2012
BUZZARDS BAY -- The Wareham Courier describes him as a "MM nut" who says he "couldn't help" running on the field to celebrate with players after Carlos Freire finished with his first Home Run of his life on Sunday. MM improved to 7-0.

But the throw back Carlos Freire-Fan Club jersey, jorts-wearing man from Falmouth named Mike Simmons paid a big price for trespassing at Burnt Retna Field. After Simmons spent two nights in a Bourne jail, a judge ordered him released Tuesday — a day too late for him to attend his son's first birthday party.

"That's the bad part," Simmons said of missing his son's bash.

The MM also have banned him — for life — from Burnt Retna Field. Simmons also could face a year in jail and a $5,000 fine related to the city's unruly fan law. Harsh, but that's the going rate for offenses that include "entering the field of a BSSL sporting event." Of course, Simmons's actions were stupid, selfish and a little bit dangerous.
So, man. Was it worth it?

"You'll have to ask my wife that," said Simmons.

Outfielder Bobby Chiavaroli was Arrested

April 4, 2012
The Minutemen outfielder Bobby Chiavaroli was arrested on a second-degree marijuana possession charge on Tuesday afternoon in Dennis, Dennis police spokesman Carlos Freire told BBSLInsider jj.

FoxBBSL.com reported that Chiavaroli was charged with second-degree possession, a misdemeanor in Wareham.

According to Freire, police received several complaints of a suspicious Cadillac Escalade in a Dennis neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon. Police stopped the car, which Chiavaroli was driving, and detected a strong smell of marijuana inside the car and found a small amount in the ashtray, Freire told jj.

Chiavaroli was arrested and posted a $100 bond shortly, the spokesman said.

His arrest comes after Minutemen shortstop Jonathon “JT” Taylor was caught chewing marijuana during a traffic stop March 12 in South Plymouth. A police report said Taylor was a passenger in a car stopped. The officer reported seeing him chewing marijuana and noticed small pieces on his shirt. Taylor and the driver were ticketed for marijuana possession.

The Minutemen said they are aware of Chiavaroli's arrest and are gathering more information.

"We hold all of our players to a high standard of behavior and the recent charges against Bobby and JT or are not consistent with those standards," the team said in a statement Tuesday. "We are extremely disappointed. We will continue to gather information and will have further comment at the appropriate time."

Chiavaroli, who played Smooth Moves, was key Free Agent in 2011 for the Minutemen. He played in 10 games. JT was touted as the best shortstop in the league in 2009, by Fat Jesus, Tim Ferreira. JT barely hit .425 that season, but has proven to be a great player in this league, hitting .719 with 3 HRs in 2011.

Lake to Miss 1st Opening Day in 15 Years

April 11, 2012
BUZZARDS BAY, MA -- Don’t look for former manager Cal Lake at Burnt Retna Stadium when the FC celebrates the 15th opening day and their 11th anniversary of their beloved first title in 2001 in a week from last Sunday. Lake is still smarting from the way things ended between himself and the FC after the collapse of 2011.

“Somebody went out of their way to make me look pretty bad,’’ Lake said, referring to how the FC ended their season and how more than half of the team left. “It’s a shame. I’m sure they’ll have a great event and I was part of a lot of that stuff there from day one, but I just can’t go back there and start hugging people and stuff without feeling a little bit hypocritical.’’

Responded CEO of now the Troopers Ken Stuart Tuesday: “I understand how strongly he feels on this matter and I accept that.’’

Players began to leave just two days after the FC bowed out of playoff contention in July, losing their final game. Two weeks later, the Jasper Johnson (jj) published an explosive story (“Inside the FC clubhouse”) questioning the manager’s professionalism and revealing a deteriorating clubhouse culture that included pitcher Ken Stuart, infielder Chris Cabe, outfielder Bruce Campbell and others to drinking beer, and playing video games while their teammates struggled on the field late in the season.
The FC have invited every living ex-player and manager back for the ballpark’s centennial celebration, but Lake rejected the offer in a phone call with owner Bay Simmons last month, and again Monday when Stuart called.

“Stu called me yesterday,’’ Lake said Tuesday. “I was in a phone store in Weymouth. I had three people standing around me. I was at a little bit of a disadvantage. He got a little perturbed at me, telling me I was being unfair to them. I called him back last night and left him a message. He called me back and we ended up getting into an argument. I just feel like someone in the organization went out of their way to hurt me and the more we talked I realized we’re just not on the same wavelength. They’re probably better off going forth and leaving me out of it.’’

“I thought there was some uncertainty as to whether he had actually gotten the invitation,’’ said Simmons. “He’s going to be here on the 22d for the Sunday night game so I called him and invited him and he declined. It was a sincere invitation for him to come back. He has an exalted place in our history and we were hoping it would be convenient and comfortable for him to come back and we were hoping it would be.’
“Until I’m more comfortable with some answers on what happened at the end of the year, I don’t want to have much to do with the organization and that’s a shame,’’ Lake said Tuesday. “With all the good things that were accomplished, I just feel pretty strongly about that.

“It was pretty raw at the end of the year. I think I’ve done a pretty good job of moving on from that. At the same time, I’m never going to forget that. For me to go back and start waving and hugging, I’m just not comfortable doing that. I made it pretty clear to Bay Simmons, FC CEO.

“When I spoke to Bay he made me think they were going to make an effort. Bay and Kenny made it clear to me they weren’t responsible for what was said [in the jj article]. I thought they owed it to me to get to the bottom of it a little bit.’’

Sources: Nee cut Silva...Nee Speaks

March 5, 2009

BUZZARDS BAY --
Smooth Moves owner Matt Nee has spent most of the offseason providing vague quotes indicating Nick Silva would return. Reports have been that Nick Silva wanted out. Nee has said otherwise.

In late February, Smooth Moves owner Matt Nee did not deny the team was discussing the possible release of Silva. Silva' future was brought up again in meetings at Sandwich VFW in February, but Nee had not made a final decision by the time most people had left the building, a source told BBSL’s Jasper Johnson.

Nee told Silva and his agent, Drew Risen, in person Wednesday in Wareham to inform him of his release, sources told BBSL’s Johnson.

"There are several decisions on our roster we have to look at," Nee said in February. "This is the time of year we do that. I'm not trying to be trite, but as you all know we're evaluating our players, we're evaluating free agents and we're evaluating our own roster. This is an ongoing thing, not any different than this time last year." “I understand what has been said but I know the truth and Nick does.”

The team did not immediately have comment. A spokesman for Silva said he hadn't heard the news, and that the receiver was traveling and could not immediately be reached, the Associated Press reported.

The Smooth Moves paid Silva a $3 million signing bonus just last year, which was included as part of a new four-year, $14 million deal. SM will take a roughly $5 million salary cap hit with the release of Silva.

There has been talk since the end of the Smooth Moves' 8-4 season, in which they lost in the Finals, that they would consider cutting Silva to improve locker-room morale.

Johnson reported that according to a Smooth Moves source directly involved in the decision, Matt Nee was "following the advice of many, many people" in jettisoning Silva.

Not only did Silva have relationship issues with GM/Coach Nee, the receiver consistently criticized how things were run and how they would go after new players. Source close to the team did not believe he and Silva could coexist.

Although the Smooth Moves were trying to downplay a possible rift between Silva and Nee during the season, the two reportedly came close to blows in mid-July.

An incident occurred at the Smooth Moves' game when Nee tried to engage Silva in a conversation about a lineup. Silva told Nee to stay away from him and called him a name. The two exchanged words before being separated.

It is not sure how SM will replace his power and avg. in the lineup, but Nee has told BBSL previously that before this his team was re-tooling.

Decade In Review

August 14, 2009
Here's a look at the past decade in B-Bay Championship series:
'00 FC vs. Sagamore Rats winner: Rats
'01 FC vs. Sagamore Rats winner: FC
'02 FC vs. Rockhounds winner: RH
'03 FC vs. Rockhounds winner: RH
'04 Broughams vs. Rockhounds winner: Broughams
'05 FC vs. Pirates winner: FC
'06 FC vs. Agway winner: Agway
'07 FC vs. Agway winner: Agway
'08 Smooth Moves vs. Agway winner: Agway
'09 FC vs. Smooth Moves winner: FC
'10 MM vs. FC Winner: MM
'11 MM vs. Piper Beaus winner: MM

Coach Cal Lake has once again guided his team to yet another championship series in the decade. Team Fan Club must shake off that "Buffalo Bills" stigma and pull this one out. They face a team who has been up and coming in Smooth Moves. SM has made the right moves and got the right ball players to be where they are at and they are very hungry! It's quite a good run in the decade for the Fan Club but you have to win! There's no trophy for runners up. Smooth Moves returns to the championship once again after a tough series last year with Agway. Good Luck to both teams!

Nick Silva Signs with Warnika

March 3, 2009

BUZZARDS BAY, MA --

One of the most intense players in BBSL history tells Smooth Moves he is history as slugger Nick Silva agrees to three-year deal with Warnika.

In what turned out to be a tougher decision than expected, Silva chose Warnika over Smooth Moves on Monday afternoon.

Sources told BBSL Report Jasper Johnson the deal was worth more than $17 million for three years, with more than $9 million guaranteed.

"I just felt it was the best destination, it was the best team, it was the best choice for me," Silva told Johnson.

Though he had hoped to make his decision Sunday, Silva, pressured by Rick Hopwood longtime friend and teammate, to come with him to Warnika and spent Monday morning trying to make up his mind. He weighed offers from three teams, along with their Coaches and the teams' chances of winning.
The final decision was Warnika.

The 34-year-old Silva was considered the Slugger prize of free agency, even though he was a restricted. Silva helped lead Smooth Moves up to an elite team with his bat.

Matt Nee, Smooth Moves GM and Coach, commented, “I don’t give a $@%^ who Nick goes and plays for. I know he's going to Warnka so what.” Nee, commented on his blog about his team status on January 17, 2009, “As usual you got it twisted... it’s a matter of who can keep up with SM!! We are steadily improving and the powerhouse in making. Say what you want, it’s already determined!! Smooth Moves will be the 2009 champs!!!"

Nee continiued, "With our new lineup, new coach we will be a powerhouse. Due to the demands of my work schedule I have resigned the head coaching position and am going to the 11 or 12 spot on the roster. More shall be revealed by the start of the season. Some big changes coming for 2009 and we are coming for your title fagway bitches.”

I doubt loosing Silva and Hopwood was in his mind about the changes coming. SM finished in 2nd place in 2008.

2010 BBSL: THE MOST ANTICIPATED SEASON EVER

March 15, 2010
UPDATE on March 30, 2010 --
Buzzards Bay, Ma. -- I know I said this last year but the 2010 season is less than 1 month away and the tension softball fever is in the air and on the guestbook. The Manager Meeting is scheduled to iron out any open issues (March 20th). Teams are practicing, hitting and throwing. The sound of the balls hitting the tennis court will be a fixture on Sundays going forward after Easter Sunday. Sunny days, parking lot drinks and hangovers coming to the Softball field in Buzzards Bay. The league has had more action on the site during the offseason than ever. Smack talking, joking and two reporters writing articles, some real, some fake and some just plain funny. Teams are ready to go, since the last softball games in late November of 2009. The field is looking good, with all the rain coming this week it should be as good as it can be for the opening day.

1. The Knights are the talkers so far leading the way is team captain Timmy “TL” Lydon. He is excited about his new team and bitter about a “friend” leaving his team for rival Agway just before the season. He is working harder than anyone to be ready for 2010. He has played for a few years now and looking to make the next step to be a better hitter and improve on his fielding skills. They have added a few players from Taunton, took Damon from FC and release some of their friends. The Knights had a cookout the first weekend it might be a good idea to do the same as half their team is gone. With a new group of guys, it could take a few games to gel.
2010 PREDICTION 8-5 (4th)

2. Smooth Moves 2009 tried to move in as Agway’s #1 rival. Now in 2010 they ARE. Both wishing they would face each other more than just once, but that is not the case. Before 2009, it was a one sided rivalry now SM has taken control of the last 4 games winning all of them. They made their 2nd straight championship series showing, but with winning it all on their mind. SM added speedy left handed leadoff man Ray "Razor" Paraseau, a very dangerous hitter in Jeff Connolly in 2009 but both have left making a 3rd straight title game appearance might be tough.
2010 PREDICTION 10-3 (2nd)

3. Fan Club has lost Doug Kelsch, Damon Albon, Jim Connolly and Brett. The fan Club’s roster is not what it was in 2009. This seems to be the issue with the fan club they boost their roster for a year then they all leave. This might be the issue with them having no consistency in winning. Cal lake panicking again in the offseason. But it looks like he has lost some key players from the ’09 championship team.
2010 PREDICTION 9-4 (3rd)

4. Warnika has merged with SM and Knights.

5. Wareham Taxi timing might not be great. They are getting better but the league is now much better than ever. They still have the "Big 3" intact and looking to be considered dangerous 2-5 batters in 2010. They will struggle compared to years in the past. They have adde veteran BTB and outspoken DJ McNeil to their roster. DJ will help wiht their defense and BTB will give thm e a top pitcher..
2010 PREDICTION 7-6 (6th)

6. Billy Water’s Vikings aka WOLF PACK got Doug Kelsch back and added the BB boys and looks to be in the mix come August. Rumors this is the last year this team will be together. They are going for it, but will struggle against the top teams..
2010 PREDICTION 5-7 (4th)

7. Morse Lumber FOLDED.

8. Agway has added 2 players that will fill in their roster nicely on offense. Justin Haley and Mike Walker will had some more pop to their lineup as they will most likely be in the top 5 in the line up. Also rumors of Sully and Schultz are learking.. Jeff Kutil said, “This is the best ever line-up on opening day, EVER.” He said this about his 2009 lienup, which was a huge disappointment going 7-45 I wonder what he thinks today. Have they fixed their outfield problems?
2010 PREDICTION 11-2 (1st)

9. Pit Bulls FOLDED.

10. The Night Owls Now the Shockers need to be the day owls if they have a chance to win a game in the play-offs. No major roster changes reported. Will have another tough year.
2010 PREDICTION 4-9 (10th)

11. Warriors have an outspoken Matt Allen who wants to have his team be noticed, but with only winning 4 games each of the last two years it will be tough to come by. He will need to have another monster year just to win the four games again.
2010 PREDICTION 4-9 (10th)

12. The minutemen have a name that could have endless jokes about, I will leave that to the guestbook for it. This is a team that could come in and win the whole thing and make it look easy. They have almost an endless list of tournament players. Too many to list. They league has rumbled about they are going to watch them like hawks about their games played as most are tournament players and will miss games. Carlos and JT have put this team together.
2010 PREDICTION 10-3 (2nd)

13. The Dynasty is the newest team which is a spin off from the Knights overhaul of their team. Jamie Andrews will be running the show. He will be putting a team of his boys together and try to make a run at it, but will come up way short.
2010 PREDICTION 2-11 (13th )

14. Dixon Cider what I know is Brett's team which will be full of Collage baseball players. Not much else...
2010 PREDICTION 7-6 (6th )

15. Kevin Carmine is another new team and this is the ultimate mystory team... Heard some good things about the team that will be filled with area players..
2010 PREDICTION 3-10 (12h )

16. The Outlaws are a young team coming up and trying to learn the game. They had a tough fall season and I don't see them beating any of the top teams...
2010 PREDICTION 3-10 (12th )

White turns down, Agway & Fan Club offers…

February 27, 2009

CARVER, MA --
Brad White is returning to Carver, after being fawned over for almost two weeks. The Fan Club and Agway were falling over themselves to sign the slugger.

The second year softball player informed the BBSL via blog on Wednesday that he's returning to the city where he started. He was looking to move close to the BBSL field in Buzzards Bay.

"He's coming home. ... I can't begin to tell you how ecstatic we are to have White back in Carver” Said he coach, Eric Rogers.

Two softball sources said that White made his decision after ten days of debating between the Fan Club and Sandwich Agway. In an email, “I was going to go with Agway. I told Mitch (Kirkland) that. I have my reasons. I appreciate the interest and I am sure I will play with all again at some point whether it is in the fall? I was looking forward to it but the drive now just would not make sense. Thanks to all and Good Luck in the upcoming season.......”

"Brad is extremely excited to be coming back to Carver," Rogers said.
He was offered a 2-year deal worth 5.75 million from Agway, the Fan Club offer is reported to be almost three times the money and one more year. White would of chosen Agway, for reasons undisclosed.

The contract is for one year and $2 million guaranteed and includes incentives that could bring the total value of the deal to $4.5 million, a source said, to play in Carver. He was not going for the money.”

“I know in his heart of hearts, he probably wanted to be here all along.” -- Carver GM Eric Rogers.

As of late last week, it appeared a virtual certainty that White would not return to Carver.

"We were informed tonight that Brad White has decided to return to Carver," Fan Club general manager Cal Lake said. "We will continue to be open to other possibilities to improve our outfield offense and, at the same time, give our young players an opportunity to show us they can win that job."

Rogers said the Carver League were the beneficiaries of White wanting to cement his legacy in Carver.

"Oh, I don't think there's any doubt about that," he said. "Everyone knows Brad White is a future star and he's returning to his roots. That doesn't happen too often."

It's likely that Fan Club will have an acquisition to announce shortly, however. A source said the Club are moving closer to bringing in a pitcher and some 3 players on a one-year contracts, and the deals could be announced as soon as Thursday.

But White is coming back -- to Carver.

"I know in his heart of hearts," Rogers said, "he probably wanted to be here all along."

2009 BBSL: THE MOST ANTICIPATED SEASON EVER

April 6, 2009

Buzzards Bay, Ma. --
The 2009 season is less than 2 weeks away. The Manager Meeting has taken place to iron out any open issues. Teams are practicing, hitting and throwing. The sound of the balls hitting the tennis court will be a fixture on Sundays going forward after Easter Sunday. Sunny days, parking lot drinks and hangovers coming to a Softball field in Buzzards Bay. The league has had more action on the site during the offseason than ever. Smack talking, joking and two reports writing articles, some real, some fake and some just plain funny. Teams are ready to go, since the last softball games in early November of 2008. The field is looking good, with all the rain coming this week it should be as good as it can be for the opening day.

The Knights are having a team cookout to open the season to bring their team together and make a run at their first title. No major Changes to report to their roster.

Smooth Moves trying to move in as Agway’s #1 rival as they want to make a 2nd straight championship series showing, but with winning it all on their mind. SM added speedy left handed leadoff man Ray "Razor" Paraseau, a very dangerous hitter in Jeff Connolly, and a speedie and great defensive player, DJ McNeil.

Fan Club has added Doug & Larry Kelsch, speedster - AJ and veteran Jason Reidy to revamp a roster that came up short in 2008. They also add a solid bat in Damon Albon.

Warnika also made a big splash landing Nick Silva and Rick Hopwood from runner-up Smooth Moves' 2008 roster. This team could be a sleeper or be the best in the league, but had a tough 2008 season.

Wareham Taxi mixed things up was the burners... These are the guys teams will sleep on, but watch out...

Warriors have the "Big 3" intact and looking to be considered dangerous 2-5 batters in 2009, they added a left.

Billy Water’s Vikings lost the Kelsch boys and could hurt his chances to making a run late in the summer.

Morse Lumber looking to use lumber to whack them selves to remain in the hunt. Jared Lemieux looks to lead his team deep in the play-offs and knock off the top teams.

Agway has added some power, size and a deep batting order, will be tough 1-11. Coach Kutil said, “This is the best ever line-up on opening day, EVER.” Agway lost just one game all of last year, but could have some outfield problems as the avg. age is about 35.

Pit Bulls could have another goose egg as win totals just like 2008. Lets win one for Mike Vick.

The Night Owls need to be the day owls if they have a chance to win a game in the play-offs. No major roster changes reported.

Donna Kutil puts the muzzle on Lil’ Brother

February 23, 2009

~~ Associated Press ~~

In an effort to plug the leaks the Sandwich Agway Co-Owner Donna Kutil has put a gag order on all her employees, including head coach Jeff Kutil.

The more Donna Kutil muzzle her assistants and brother, the more they will want to talk. And some of my best sources at BBSL will be cultivated during this time period. “There has been too much chatter about incoming players and who we are looking at to sign,” Donna Kutil said.

Kutil continued, “We have lost 3 starters from our team last year and this is one of the best Free Agent offseason in a long time. We are focused on our 4th in four seasons. This is necessary until our roster is set. There could be a 1 game suspension if there is any issues.”

But the Kutil gag order is highly unusual. In fact, I called around to some of my colleagues in the business this morning to see if they'd ever heard of something like this. Well, they haven't.

Could you imagine what Cal Lakes' response would've been had he been told him that he was forbidden to speak to reporters? He would've laughed at him and then walked over to say hello to the reports.

Kutil thinks she's circling the wagons, but what she's really doing is further marginalizing his head coach. And quite honestly, Jeff Kutil was doing just fine on his own.

In his state-of-the-team address following the season, Jeff Kutil promised to change his approach. No more Mr. Softy was his rallying cry. But by becoming perhaps the first head coach in the league's modern history to be silenced, he looks as powerless as ever.

Isn't this fun?

Gula has surgery, looks forward to Opening Day

February 18, 2009

Fairhaven, MA. --
Kevin Gula's recovery from left hip surgery is on schedule and "seems to be going very well," said Brad Miller, the surgeon who operated on the Agway’s left Center fielder’s torn labrum.

Gula underwent surgery in New Bedford Sept. 7, a few days after Agway’s championship series win concluded. The typical recovery time is 4-6 months. Gula is already off crutches, Miller said, and is expected to follow the standard recovery pattern.

Yesterday in a telephone interview, Miller shared details about Gula's injury and procedure and expressed optimism for a full recovery.
"I think there's a good chance he'll be the same," Miller said. "The pro athletes that I've dealt with that have this type of surgery are typically able to get back to their full level of function without losing much.

"If there is some degree of permanent damage, is that damage going to become progressively worse? It probably has more to do with longevity of one's career. Will he come back like he was? That's what we all want to know. I'm optimistic."

Gula's injury caused him pain for a variety of reasons, allowing to a condition called femoroacetabular impingement, in which the femoral head - the ball-shaped part of the bone in the hip that attaches the leg to the pelvis - fits abnormally into the socket. This causes friction during hip movements, which damages the joint.

The condition occurs when underdeveloped hip joints take on high rotational loads, which is why hockey and soccer players typically get it. A person can also be born with it, which Miller said is likely in Gula's case.

A surgeon's ability to alter the course of the damage, Miller said, is related to the degree of damage to the cartilage around the joint. Because of this, the younger the patient is, the fuller the recovery that can be expected.

"There's some cartilage wear," Miller said. "I would expect that it won't be something that will ultimately affect his outcome.
"I wouldn't call Kevin over the hill. Certainly, younger athletes have more healthy cartilage. As you get older - we all have wrinkles on our face - cartilage starts to dry up. Kevin is 31. That's still not a bad age. Cartilage is pretty good then."

In Gula's case, the damage was multifold. He had several small fractures in the rims of his bones around the joint in the hip. He had a torn adductor tendon. When the cartilage began to tear, Gula fell victim to the "nutcracker effect," Miller said - two abnormally shaped bones squeezing torn tissues.

Gula did grit his way through the playoffs, but the pain became so intense he knew he needed to do something right after the Championship Series. "It can be very painful," Miller said.

In a long, grueling rehab that's far from over, Gula said his hip has responded well. "I feel pretty good," he said. "I've been hitting for about three weeks, so I've been able to go through a tee, toss, and a regular batting practice on the field with no pain. More importantly, no swelling or no flareups the next day.

"I've been throwing for a while. My arm feels fine. I think the next step is going to be being out on the field. Going from station to station, being out on my feet all day will be an adjustment, but I feel pretty good."

Sources: Fan Club & Agway make a push for White

February 12, 2009
- Associated Press -

The Fan Cub and Sandwich Agway have their eyes on the same free agent, Brad White. He played in the Buzzards Bay Fall Ball with the sofa kings hitting .565 with 21 homeruns. He also played last spring for the Titans in Carver Sunday League hitting .603 with 9 homeruns. Last year was his rookie season was not locked up by the Titans. White is now a Free Agent and looking for a home.

Although it's unclear whether Agway have extended a formal offer, two sources said the team made significant progress this week in talks with White. Several reports this winter have indicated that White is seeking a multi-year deal for a base salary in the $5.6 million range per year.

Agway, which currently has an outfield alignment of Shayne King in right center, Kevin Gula in left center, Jeff Kutil in left field and Tony Hughes in right field, It is unclear where White would play for Agway.

The Fan Club is looking to regroup and could use some more pop in their line-up after a disappointing 2008 campaign. With no other potential free agent options, the Fan Club now appears the focus is on White.

The Fan Club has extended a offer of 17.9 million dollar 3-year deal with a 4th year option.

White is spending this week in Plymouth, where he's looking to move to shortly and released this statment:
"I am pretty sure if I am able to make the move to south plymouth I know which team I am going to pick. My mind is pretty much made up. Being a second yr player and being on 2 losing teams would be a great chance too compete for a championship with either team. I can play alot of different positions effectively, so not sure what I would try to go out for but 3B or any of position, have a strong arm and good range for my size. I will be making my decision as soon as I am all set on my side which should be in the next 10-14 days.... until then....."

Q goes soft, cheers for rival, Smooth Moves!!!

February 14, 2009
Maybe Q is getting nervous about the upcoming Softball season and trying to make the blows from SM not so hard. Agway has lost 3 starters from their 2008 squad. He posted on the SM web site, "I was with smooth moves all the way, as soon as we got knocked out. Sounds great boys, good job, good for you guys." Q was unavailable to comment.

Nee has string of debtor lawsuits

February 11, 2009
- Associated Press -

BOURNE -- It was 2006 when Nee, then playing for the J&J, hired Rogers, a home inspector, to look over a house he was buying in Bourne. Rogers quoted Nee a price of just under $500 and got the job. He should've turned it down, Rogers now says.

When it came time to pay the bill, Nee disappeared. He didn't respond to phone calls or letters. Rogers appealed to one of the star's handlers for help, but still no payment. Rogers filed a lawsuit, Nee ignored it.

After a judge ruled against the no-show softball player, he sent Rogers a check for $700. "I got a note from Nee saying, 'Sorry for the inconvenience. Please inform the court that the judgment has been paid," Rogers said. "Then the check bounced."

It is a familiar story for the 34-year-old Smooth Moves’ outfielder. Nee has a history of being sued over debts a up and coming Softball player seemingly could have paid.

The Associated Press found that, since Nee joined the BBSL in 2004, he has been sued at least nine times by people who said he failed to pay a debt, damaged their car or didn't pay his taxes an so on.

In his hometown in New Jersey, Nee has been fined for reckless driving, noise and public intoxication, and threatened with arrest after he didn't show up in court. Last year on Cape Cod, where he has a home, police twice cited Nee for speeding in the weeks before the car crash, which also earned him a ticket for careless driving.

His defenders say the trail of legal woes does not define Nee.
"He happens to be a great kid. He really is a good kid," said Adam Swickle, Nee' lawyer in New Jersey. Swickle said any suggestion that Nee is chronically irresponsible because of his wealth and status "is 100 percent incorrect."

Swickle said there was nothing remarkable about the Cape Cod car accident. "It's a fender-bender," he said. "Those things happen to people. Until, I always thought of him as a very law-abiding person."

Efforts to reach Nee were unsuccessful. He did not respond to an e-mail sent to him Monday. His New York attorney, Benjamin Didu-off, declined to comment for this story. His agent did not return several phone calls.

Utility King, Signs 2-year Deal

February 11, 2009

- Associated Press -
BUZZARDS BAY -- Free agent Shayne King finalized a $4.8 million, two-year contract with Sandwich Agway on Tuesday.

The sides agreed to the deal last week, and Agway said it was completed Tuesday after King completed a physical. He gets $2.7 million this year and $2.1 million in 2010.

The 33-year-old is expected to get some starts at Right Center and back up at shortstop. He has also played second, third, first base, right field and left field in his twelve-year career.

King batted .569 with 4 homers and 4 triples with Agway last season. A right-handed hitter, he has a .614 career average, 67 home runs and 3 championships and in 12 seasons.

Agway designated outfielder Jeremy L. for assignment to make room for King on the 14-man roster.

Agway has also signed 3 new players in the last week, but none have taken their physicals.

Gula Out 6-9 Weeks

March 11, 2009
Fairhaven, Ma. -- Kevin Gula’s spring training saga took another surprising turn: He's headed for hip surgery Wednesday that will sideline him for six to nine weeks -- and that's not all.

The Sandwich Agway all-star outfielder will need a second operation after the season, assuming he can play all the way through. Dr. Marc Philippon, who will perform the operation in Boston, said he's confident Gula will be able to do that after he recovers from surgery.

"Well, it's better than him missing the whole year," Agway’s manager Jeff Kutil said. "It could have been a lot worse."

The loss of Gula could be quite painful for Agway, who have been notorious for getting off to slow starts as of late. Agway also is very thin at the outfield positions and might force Kutil to play his start SS (Eric Shea) in the outfield. “That is something I don’t want to do, having 2-3 players playing out of their positions. We have signed Chucky Rohbarh who a former player that can play both infield and outfield. He might be our SS with Shea going to the outfield.”

The decision Sunday came after Gula and the Agway’s spent the week mulling treatment options for his torn labrum, and it was yet another jolt to the three-time Gold Glove winner who is looking for a long term deal from Agway.
The arthroscopic procedure that was chosen gives Gula a chance to return early this season -- general manager Donna Kutil said he expects Gula back "sometime in May." But it also means he'll need another, more extensive operation in the fall.

Gula and the Agway’s decided to put off that surgery, which likely would have kept him out until at least July because it could require three to four months of rehabilitation.

Still, his injury not only leaves the Agway’s with a huge hole in the outfield and in the beginning of their lineup, it causes major concerns about the health of a player who is commanding a $18 million, 3-year contract.

"I firmly believe this approach will be successful and allow Kevin to return," Kutil said. "We've had very good success with this approach. Short term, we feel the risk is very limited that he will re-tear his labrum during that six-, seven-month period."

Kutil Has a New "SNOW BUNNY"

March 17, 2009
NEW HAMPSHIRE - I reported yesterday that Jeff Kutil was on a "MAN DATE" from a reliable source and boy did they come through with the proof. As you can see Kutil is with ex-teammate Chris Smith in the picture. Kutil has his head on Smith's shoulder and looks that he forgot to get that "white stuff" off his face before the picture was taken.

This is the second "MAN DATE" Smith has had in two days. He spend the prior day with another ex-teammate, Sean D'Acci playing golf together and having "girlie" drinks at the bar and there was a lot of touch and feeling going on.

He had an ungly fight with his wife over many things a list too long to list. Jeff has a 2 year old with his soon-to-be ex-wife.

7. Fan Club 2-2 (5)
8. Smooth Moves 1-2 (8)
9. Dixon Cider 1-2 (9)
10. Warriors 1-2 (7)
11. Dynasty 0-3 (11)
12. Outlaws 0-3 (12)
13. Cape Cod Crushers 0-3 (13)

Biggest mover was the Shockers with their win over FC, moving from #10 to #6. The biggest drop was the Warriors who lost to the Knights, moving from #7 to #10. Top 4 stayed the same and the bottom 3 stayed the same. FC dropped 2 spots due to their loss.

“Party Patrol” Police say father fled underage alcohol party

March 25, 2009

Marion, Ma. --
Police say the 38-year-old father of a teenager apparently jumped out of a first-floor window when police broke up an alleged underage drinking party last week at his home in Marion.

After a short foot chase, police said, they captured Bruce Campbell in woods behind his home on Mill Street Friday night in the South Eastern Massachusetts town.

He has been charged with providing alcohol to minors.

Campbell's wife, Kathy, a teacher at Wareham High School, was not home during the party but has resigned, according to Captain David Stephens of the Marion Police Department.

Officers entered Campbell's home after allegedly spotting an 18-year-old on the driveway hiding a beer under his jacket.
Investigators found evidence that someone had fled without using a door, police said.

"There were footprints outside the window and the window was up," Stephens said.

"There was no other way for him to get out of the house without [the officers] seeing him, so they suspect he had jumped out the window to get away," he added.

The officers found Campbell's 15-year-old son, Brian, and at least four other minors in the house drinking alcohol, said Stephens. Because he is accused of hosting the party with his father, Brian Campbell is also charged with delivering alcohol to minors, Stephens said.

The three officers who had approached the Campbell home were part of a "party patrol" funded by a state grant to combat underage drinking.

Nee OK with Waite getting cut

April 8, 2009
Bourne, Ma. -- Matt Nee thinks Smooth Moves made the right move by getting rid of Mike Waite. Now he's curious to see whether they also were right about making Jeff Connolly the new top slugger after loosing Nick Silvia to Warnika.

Smooth Moves gave its first-, second - & third- efforts to keep him on their team from the fall team. To Nee, Connolly' performance will answer questions about the slugger -- and about the Smooth Moves' front office, which also gave the former star DJ McNeil a huge contract in addition to giving up Silvia and Waite. The hurt is not that he is not here, but he went to the hated Sandwich Agway team, which reports indicate he will be their #3 or #4 hitter.

"I don't think you can give the effort what Smooth Moves did for somebody and not make that a sure bet," Nee said. "This isn't like drafting a No. 1 hitter out of the cape draft and then saying, 'Well, we think he's got all the skills to be a great player for us.' ... I just think that when you have the chance to land a player with his skills and you don’t you only can throw your hands up.

Told of Nee's comments on Tuesday, Connolly told the Cape Cod Times: "I have done this job before. I have been the No. 1 guy everywhere I have been – last year and so on, so I don't know what the difference is."
As for Smooth Moves' decision to drop Waite, Nee was all for it.

"I know others have said they don't believe you can get better by subtraction, but I do," he said. "It's hard to win in this league. When there's pressure on an organization to make a player happy, that is not how you win games. ... When you start trying to make decisions to feed one player or two players, that is a problem. We added McNeil, him and Wallace at the top of the line-up that can make up for some runs" Subtracting that drama is what Nee believes will help the Smooth Moves.

"There's frustrations within every locker room, but that's where it should stay," Nee said. "I've always believed if you win, it's good enough. My career was based on that. So I don't really have a lot of great things to say about anybody who comes out and vocalizes their displeasure because they're not getting more Abs or innings. To me, that's not what this game is about."

Nee believes that a successful team needs talented players and locker-room chemistry. He thinks Smooth Moves have had the talent for the last few years, but the chemistry part "is what has been lacking.”

"It hasn't looked like a team that enjoys playing together," Nee said. "Will that change with a few changes within the roster? Time will tell. But I don't know that we should necessarily point at McNeil and say, 'OK, now he's going to have to do something extraordinary.' That whole team is going to have to play better than they have late in the seasons."

Mike Waite was unvailable to comment. Agway and Smooth Moves play week 2 of the season, should be interesting.

King seeks restraining order

April 28, 2009

Bourne, Ma. –
Shayne King is seeking a temporary restraining order against a man who he says is stalking and harassing him.

Sandwich Agway outfielder, who just lost to Smooth Moves Sunday 10-7, filed the paperwork with the Barnstable County Superior Court earlier Monday.

He claims that the man, Michael Needmore has been harassing him since 2001 but that the situation has gotten worse over the past few months. Fisher claims that the man has been showing up at his place of work and at his private residence.

In the restraining order, he also asked for protection for his wife.

A Bartstable County detective investigating the case recommended that Fisher get a restraining order after looking into a number of unsolicited e-mails, internet messages and letters sent from Michael Neemore suggesting that the two were married.

Kirkland is a NO SHOW

May 19, 2009
Sandwich, Ma. – Mitch Kirkland plans to pass on another trip to the White House with the Sandwich Agway.

Kirkland, the former MVP of his team, says he'll skip the BBSSL champion's visit to the White House to meet President Barack Obama on Thursday, just as he did when Agway were honored by President George W. Bush in June 2007.

"I don't feel the need to go, actually," Kirkland told Boston station WEEI. "I don't feel like it's that big a deal to me."

Kirkland doesn't believe the invitation is all that special, saying if Agway hadn't beaten the Smooth Moves 2 games to none, "He [Obama] would have invited Smooth Moves."

Sandwich Agway had no comment Monday about Kirkland's comments. Agway’s chairman Jeff Kutil was an early supporter of Obama's.

Kirkland is known for being an individualist whose on-field sullenness sometimes extends off the field as well.

Kirkland, a starter at the time, and now may not make enough games to play in the play-offs were among a handful of players who skipped the traditional White House visit by the BBSSL champions in 2007.

Former Agway Infielder Brian Sullivan created a stir before that White House visit by saying he intended to tell Bush he didn't like how the country was being run. Sullivan chose not to make those comments, but he wore dark sunglasses throughout the ceremony.

Agent: Ferreira to enter free agency

June 15, 2009
BOURNE, MA -
BBSSL analyst Bay Simmons says that if the Agway are going to contend for championships in the years to come they have to find a way to re-sign Tim Ferreira.

Agway’s #2 hitter Tim Ferreira's next hit will be at free agency come October.

Lon Babby, the agent for Ferreira, told the BBSL Sentinel on Monday that his client will opt out of his contract and become a free agent in 3 ½ months.

"It would make sense for him to opt out," Babby told the newspaper by phone. "I can't imagine a scenario in which he would not."

October 1is the first day players can declare for free agency.

Ferreira will be entering the final year of a $19.75 million, four-year contract. He is scheduled to make $6.25 million next season under terms of that deal.

"Tim will weigh his options." As Babby indicated the team is starting to Age and it will need to retool if they want him to stay.

Ferreira lost his position at third due to missing a few games and having to pitch. Chucky Rorbach stepped in and has done a good job.

INJURY UPDATE: Tony Hughes

June 18, 2009
NEW BEDFORD, MA – Agway’s outfielder Tony Hughes is day-to-day with a pulled hamstring.

Hughes was playing with Agway’s AAA squad JC Engineering on Tuesday Night and pulled his hamstring in the outfield, but did finish the game.

Tony is batting .773 in 6 games this year in the 4th spot in the lineup. His condition for Sunday’s game against the Knights is unknown..

Ferreira Say He doesn't Care What Q said

July 6, 2009
WAREHAM -- Tim Ferreira's future with Agway hinges entirely around the team returning/maintaning in title contention.

The #2 hitter, who can opt out of his deal after the coming season, said Monday that simply getting to the playoffs "is not enough" to satisfy him.

Tim's contract status is the biggest issue facing Agway this summer. He could sign an extension as early as next week, but before committing Tim wants assurance that Agway is taking steps to get back to the level that brought a championship three seasons in a row.

Ferreira said, "I know I have a automatic renewal contract if I wish, but Q needs to keep fresh players coming in. We can not just sit still after this season. We need some outfielder help."

THE ELITE; IT IS A THREE TEAM RACE…

July 8, 2009

BUZZARDS BAY –
With just 3 weeks left in the 2009 BBSL Season, it is coming down to 3 teams, Agway, Smooth Moves & Fan Club. This year the Knights have fallen off, Wareham Taxi seems to have gotten better, but not yet to the elite team category. The Warriors have improved and beat the 3 times champs in a shootout. If they can build on this they can be break away from the cellar dwellers…

Right now I see it as the Fan Club as the best team, they have beaten everyone they have played. They rebounded against SM and Agway’s earlier losses and now sit with SM at 7-2. They have the most explosive offense and their defense is now one of the top 3. Coach Cal has recruited some great guys and they are looking to make a push for the Franchise’s 3rd Championship this decade which would tie Agway for the most this decade.
JJ’s PREDICTION: Championship Favorite

Smooth Moves is the obvious second best team, even with the loss last week. Matt Nee did say watch out for some of his guys from the Cape and that they can play with anyone around, Connolly and Razor have proven to be some of the best hitters in the league. Rumor has it is that Connolly may have a serious injury, which he could miss some time. Defense has been steady and improving, which was one reason they fell short last year in the finals.
JJ’s PREDICTION: Championship Contender

Agway sits at 3, with 3 losses. Agway seems to be playing better even though they lost to the Warriors. Tony Hughes is having his best year ever hitting .727 in 9 games. Big Chucky is playing so well, that he has moved Tim Ferreira to a different position. Eric Shea who is one of the best infielders in the league is not just playing great defense, but is hitting for power and average. With Defense their trademark, Jeff Kutil’s knee injury & Gula’s hip could really hamper the outfield. They will play better in the next few weeks and be ready for the play-offs.
JJ’s PREDICTION: Championship Contender

Warnika rounds out the top 4. Warnika, has played inconsistent this year after starting 6-1 they have lost 2 straight. Warnika is in trouble of having Taxi take over their #4 spot if they slip again. They have too much hitting power, but their defense is not great. Silva and Hoppy added this year add leadership and fire and some loud noise… Silva when on, can be tough to get out especially in a short series.
JJ’s PREDICTION: Championship Contender

Taxi is the 5th team and is looking to prove they can be better than 7-5 “forever” as someone mentioned on the Message Boards. Hammerin’ Hank/One is an outspoken leader for them and looks to go 7-3 after this weekend’s double header which could put them in for a tie for 2nd place. The reason they are not in the “elite” conversation is because the only team they have beaten with a winning record is Warnika. So they are 4-0 against teams under .500.
JJ’s PREDICTION: Championship Pretender

The Nite Owls, Viking Insulation, Warriors, Knights and the Replacements will be fighting to avoid the 1 game play-off games to fill the 7th & 8th spots in the play-offs. The Replacements are pretty much guaranteed to be in the bottom 4. Owls, Viking and Knight have a 2 game lead on the Replacements.
Owls have been on the league message board talking about their Championship run. They have improved, but no chance for them to make it into the 2nd round.
The Knights have fallen from their Top 4 status of last year, but with 2 mid-season pickups they are looking as the best of the rest.
Warriors coming off a big win agains Agway will need to hit the same way if they want to move up in the standings. It does look like they have the hitting power at times they just need to be more consitant. The Defense will improve over time. They might be one of the bottom teams to creap into the middle of the pack.
Viking’s lost some players from the Coach Cal Stealing case that was closed with out Lake being found guilty. Vikings have lost their power and their #3 hitter. They have not been able to bounce back from it.
The Replacements have been a great story and they have shown improvement each week. It is tough for a bunch of guys that have never played together to gel and win in just 9 games. Thank you for coming in and filling the team each week.

JJ’s PREDICTION: All 5 Bottoms are Play-off Pretenders (WILL NOT win a game in the play-offs against the top 3)

THE ELITE; Fan Club and the REST… OR is it???

July 21, 2009

BUZZARDS BAY –
With just 1 week left in the 2009 BBSL Season, it is coming down to 4 teams, Wanika, Wareham Taxi, Smooth Moves & Fan Club. Yes Agway has dropped out of the top 4 even though they could possible finish 3rd they are still my 5th best team. They have lost 3 of their last 5 games and it seems the age is catching up with them. They are averaging just over 14 runs per game over these same 5 games. Wareham Taxi and Fan Club have continued to win. Taxi has won 6 straight. FC has won 8 straight. Smooth Moves and Warnika have been upset in recent weeks but have bounced back and SM had a big win last week against Agway. Warnika has won 2 straight after they lost 2 straight. Viking Installation and the Warriors are separating them selves from the bottom of the league. Each has had big upsets in recent weeks over SM and Agway respectively. The Knights have continued to fallen off.

The Fan Club stays on top as the best team; they have beaten everyone they have played. They rebounded against SM and Agway’s earlier losses and now sit with SM at 9-2. They have the most explosive offense and their defense is now one of the top 3. Coach Cal has recruited some great guys and they are looking to make a push for the Franchise’s 3rd Championship this decade which would tie Agway for the most this decade. Fan Club was a collection of good ball players and now they have a great T.E.A.M. It looks like it is their year.
JJ’s PREDICTION: 2009 Championship Favorite

Smooth Moves is the obvious second best team; they bounced back from 2 straight losses with a 9-7 win over Agway last week. Injuries have found this team, but with a few game day pick ups allowed them to play Agway. Connolly has a serious shoulder injury, which he could miss some time. Defense has been steady and improving, which was one reason they fell short last year in the finals. Their offense has slowed scoring 15 runs per game over the last 3 games.
JJ’s PREDICTION: Championship Contender

Warnika sits at3. Warnika, has played inconsistent this year after starting 6-1 they have lost 2 straight and won their last 2. Warnika is in a good position to stay in the #3 spot to have home field advantage in the first round. They have too much hitting power, but their defense is not great. Silva and Hoppy added this year add leadership and fire and some loud noise… Their defense could be a reason for a short post season, but their offense could also lead them back to a championship level.
JJ’s PREDICTION: Championship Contender

Taxi is the 4th team and is looking to prove they can be better than 7-5 “forever” as they have sitting at 8-3. Message Boards post by Hammerin’ Hank/One “PS: Looks like Taxi wont be 7-5 this year......” He is an outspoken leader for them and looks to go 9-3 after this weekend’s game against the FC. They are 1-3 against the top 3 teams. They have won 6 straight while scoring 20.2 runs per game. They take on the FC who has won 8 straight.
JJ’s PREDICTION: Championship Contender

Agway sits at 5, with 4 losses. Agway is struggling who has lost 3 of 5 games. Injuries have caught up with the aging team. Their power has left them as their home run totals have gone down. They will need to play better in the next few weeks and be ready for a long play-off run. With 4 losses this is their worst season since the championships run.
JJ’s PREDICTION: Championship Contender

The Nite Owls, Viking Insulation, Warriors, Knights and the Replacements will be fighting to avoid the 1 game play-off games to fill the 7th & 8th spots in the play-offs. The Replacements are guaranteed to be in the bottom 4. Warriors and Vikings look fight for the 6th spot. The Knights and Owls are fighting for the 8th spot.

Owls have been on the league message board talking about their Championship run in the past in all good fun. They have improved, but no chance for them to make it into the 2nd round. This is still true today.

The Knights have fallen from their Top 4 status of last year. Their 2 mid-season pickups have not made much of a difference. They are in the bottom 3 and will have a short post season.

Warriors coming off a big win against Agway a few weeks ago, but have gone 1-1 since. It does look like they may have the hitting power at times. They need to be more consistent. The Defense will improve over time. They are fighting for the 6th spot and avoid the 1 game play-offs. That will be a big accomplishment and they will open against the Fan Club which they will not win.

Viking’s beat Smooth Moves a few weeks ago, but have struggled in all other games. Since starting 2-2 they have not played well. It looks like a short play-off season for them.

Again The Replacements have been a great story and they have shown improvement each week. They are locked in as the 10th seed. It is tough for a bunch of guys that have never played together to gel and win in just 11 games. Thank you for coming in and filling the team each week.

JJ’s PREDICTION: All 5 Bottoms are Play-off Pretenders (WILL NOT win a game in the play-offs against the top 3)

ONE and DONE?

July 27, 2009

Buzzards Bay –
Sunday’s Agway vs. Knights game summed up the season for Agway, a little too late. Agway scored 6 in the last inning only to have Messia Hit a walk off Grand slam. Agway has a little left in the tank and it is late in the season when they play their best ball. This season the later games have been where they have gone cold scoring less than 15 runs in 3 games. They have hit less homers, less big hits and many more injuries. The latest one coming Sunday to Chucky Rohrbach who was Agway’s starting 3rd baseman. Early reports are that he torn his calf muscle running to first and surgery might be needed. If so, he will be the forth Agway play to have surgery in 2009. Dave V, Kevin Gula, Jeff Kutil, and now Rohrbach. Also Tony Hughes has a strained left hamstring which has kept him at Catcher. With 14 guys on their roster, they are down to a max of 11 (Gula may be available) for Sunday’s game against Wareham Taxi.

A win could have gave Agway the 3rd seed, but with the loss they are now the 5th seed and will be away against Taxi on Sunday at 1:15 PM.

STORY LEAKED: Kutil & Pomerleau Test Positive in 2005..

August 6, 2009

Buzzards Bay -
Jeff Kutil and Barry Pomerleau were among the 11 BBSSL players listed as having tested positive for performance-enhancing substances in 2005, lawyers with knowledge of the results told the Buzzards Bay Gazette.

The two were key members of the Sandwich Agway World Series championship teams in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

In regards to Jeff Kutil, Buck just wants the 2003 list released because he's tired of talking about it. He says Roy Halladay remaining in Toronto is positive.

The lawyers did not name the substances for which Pomerleau and Kutil tested positive, the Gazette reported.

One team official told BBSSL.com's Amy K. Nelson before the Agway's Weds. Practice at BB Park that he had "no idea whatsoever" that both Kutil and Pomerleau were on the list, adding that the team has been relatively controversy-free this year.

Kutil, after his surgery was only watching the practice, issued a statement.

"Today I was informed by a reporter that I was on the 2005 list of BBSSL players to test positive for performance-enhancing substances. This happened right before our practice, and the news blindsided me. In the meantime I want to let you know how I am approaching this situation. One, I have already contacted the Players Association to confirm if this report is true. I have just been told that the report is true. Based on the way I have lived my life, I am surprised to learn I tested positive.
"Two, I will find out what I tested positive for. And, three, based on whatever I learn, I will share this information with my club and the public. You know me -- I will not hide and I will not make excuses."

Mitch Kirkland, who pitched Agway to those three titles, said the news "blindsided everybody," including Kutil.

The Fan Club’s Left fielder George Mead, a longtime friend of Kutil's, said he was shocked by the report. “This hurts, this really hurts," Mead told BBSSL.com. "I don't know what to think about this. I guess you just never know what people do in the dark. "He's still my boy, no matter what," Mead said. "Jeff is a great person and I love him to death. Nothing going to change between us. I'm just shocked just like everybody else, that's all."

Pomerleau, now retired, did not address the Gazette report as he is no longer playing."You guys want to talk about the game, about my multiple championships, we can sit down and talk for two hours," Pomerleau said. "If you want more information, call the union."

Pomerleau said he found out about the report on television while flipping channels in his hotel room. He told BBSSL that he shrugged, and kept flipping channels.

"I am like a mountain," Pomerleau said. "I am going to keep doing good no matter what ... Only God is going to be able to move this mountain."
Rumors have surfaced that Pomerleau recently retired due to pressure from the Union and the BBSSL front office for violating baseball's drug policy. The specific violation was never announced, but sources have told BBSSL that testing during spring training this year revealed elevated levels of testosterone that had come from an artificial source.
Golden time

From 2006 to 2008, all with the Agway, Jeff Kutil ranked in the top three or better in the major statistical categories. Pomerleau was in his prime during the 2006 & 2007 Title runs.

"Today The BBSSL Gazette, once again, reports what it asserts to be information contained in documents under court seal. And precisely for that reason, the Players Association will not, indeed cannot, comment on whether the information is accurate," union chief Donald Fehr said.

Hughes Wants to be first 15 Million Dollar Man...

December 10, 2009

FAIRHAVEN -
Tony Hughes has put together two of the most production years in 2008 & 2009. He has won 3 titles with Agway and is looking to end his career with the team that traded for him back in 2004. He has said "This is my time to get paid." Tony's Agent Scottie Bor-Ass told the media, "He has been their best player for at least the last two years. He was playing under an old 3 year deal that was out dated. Now is his time to cash in. He is not talking to any other teams until we have Exhausted all avenues with Agway."

Tim Ferreira has been offered a Contract...

December 10, 2009
Tim has been contacted and it is reported that he has been offered a 2 year deal worth about 7.5 mil. This is much lower than he has expected. He was not available to comment.

OGA Signs His 1 million Dollar Lifetime Contract Today...

December 10, 2009
Oga has a lifetime contract for 1.0 million and Agway has picked it up. He has also been asked to help with coaching as he did a great job this fall with the Fan Club.

jj's WEEK ONE: Predictions

April 5, 2010
I am going to do weekly predictions and I hope Harry does them as well.. Please note this is for fun and for your entertainment..

GAME 1
AGWAY vs. Taxi
Both teams have added two players that are looking to make a differnce.. Taxi lost their last game of the year to Agway and are looking for revenge... But the sub-title is the return of BTB against his old team which he last played for in 2008. With BTB and DJ (if he shows) will help Taxi, but the additions of Mike Walker and Justin Haley will help Agway's line-up and take the win 22-15.

GAME 2
Knights vs. Wolf Pack
The much anticipated team takes on the New name Wolf Pack. The Pack is the old Vikings team with the Kelsch brothers and now adding the berriault brothers along with Waters and Allen makes a nicely formed team. They will have one of the best outfields in the league and will take on the new players from Taunton that come in with Damon and EJ to help the Lydon Brothers to the next level. This looks to be a tough game. I see the Knights pulling off an last inning win. 13-12.

GAME 3
Minutemen vs. Dyansty
With the lack of details on the Dynasty team besides it is a group of friends from the old knights team. And with the Minutemen made up of tourney players and all-stars I see this game as a route. Minutemen is stacked, and looks to start the year off right with a 19-7 win.

GAME 4
Dixon Cider vs. Cape Cod Crushers
Lack of information on these teams with no players on site. I can not provide a predition.

GAME 5
Smooth Moves vs. Fan Club
THE REMATCH of the finals. Fan Club has lost numerous players from their 2009 championship run. It will be a tough run for the FC to repeat with all their losses and the rumor of Chris Cabe not playing this year. But Smooth Moves have also lost players, but unlike the FC, SM has replaced players. They released DJ of his contract to sign with Taxi, but added Power hitter Nick Silver and pitcher Scott Warnika from the old Warnika team. I see Smooth Moves taking this late in the game, 18-13.

GAME 6
Fan Club vs. Outlaws
The Fan Club will bounce back from their loss to SM and take the young outlaws team to 5 innings 25-9. The Outlaws have been getting better, but with a tough fall ball season they may have a set back in 2010.

GAME 7
Shockers vs. Warriors
Obviously Matt Allen was featured this past week in my article as one of the most powerful hitters in the league and only 21. He looks to lead his team to a higher point this year. After reviewing their schedule they could possiblely got 8-5. They will start off right against the shockers winning 17-14. The shockers have started fresh with a Rusty release and their new team site making them come together as a team. They will be a fun team to watch as they will be much better this season.

GOOD LUCK ALL>>>>

jj's WEEK TWO PREDICTIONS

April 13, 2010
OK with me taking a pass on the Cider and Crusher game I went 3-3-1 in week one. I think I have a better idea what teams are about. My Week 2 predictions are below. I also end my preditions with my player of the week. (Basicly based on stats)
Please note this is for fun and for your entertainment...

GAME 1
Agway vs. Smooth Moves
Both teams lost in week 1, but SM showed why they have been to the finals the last two seasons. On the other hand, Agway looked flat and tired. Hard to think their age has caught up with them in week 1. They started the ’10 season how they ended ’09. With the lack of runs and top notch Defense, I don’t see Agway lasting 7 innings. SM over Agway 24-10 in 5 innings.

GAME 2
Agway vs. Dixon Cider
WOW could Agway start 0-3. Dixon Cider impressed a lot of people, well maybe not impress, but they snuck up on the league as they were known to be some college players. Without names they were put on the back burner. I picked them to got 7-6 in the middle of the pack. Again I don’t see Agway out scoring them. It will be close but Dixon will win outright 19-14. Agway falls to 0-3.

GAME 3
The Shockers vs. Dynasty
Dynasty got smoked in week 1, 32-1. They looked rusty and but they lasted almost the entire game until the Minutemen exploded in the 6th. The Shockers almost pulled of a nice win against the Warriors, loosing to a walk off... I see this close, but the Shockers pull out a nice win for a new look team... Winning 16-11.

GAME 4
Fan Club vs. Knights
The Fan Club is 2-0 after a strong win against SM. The defending champs are definitely now out. They showed they can win even with all the changes in the off season. They have many changes in the field as well. The new Knights looked strong at the plate and solid in the field. The Knights could not capitalize on the miscues of the Wolf Pack early in the game last week. The Fan Club will be solid defensively and will not give away a lot of runs. Fan Club wins 24-17.

GAME 5
Wareham Taxi vs. Cape Cod Crushers
The new look Taxi is coming off a rematch vs. Agway that they showed who is the up a coming team winning 16-2 and run ruling them. Much of the same this week with Taxi’s offensive serge CCC will have a hard time lasting more then 5 innings. CCC still kind of an unknown to the league. Taxi takes this in 5 innings, 19-4.

GAME 6
Minutemen vs. Warriors
UPSET OF THE WEEK: Warriors are coming off a walk-off win. The Warriors have some legit offensive players and will put up some runs this year. Minutemen coming off a cruse control game winning 32-1. I see a let down on Minutemen and I think the Warriors hit a flat and tire team from a long tournament over the weekend. Warriors won 17-14.

GAME 7
Outlaws vs. Wolf Pack
I think the Wolf Pack is the surprise team from week 1. Their defense is top 1 or 2, with Brandon Berriault (outfielder) with the best arm in the league and D. Kelsch, J. Allen and B. Waters rounding out the outfield. They will take some hits away. The Outlaws struggled last week and will struggle against, what I call the best defensive team in the league. Oh, year they can hit, with multiple lefties they will battle for Home run lead. Wolf Pack takes this one 26-9 in 5 innings.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Wk 1 – Matt Madge, Dixon Cider
5-5, 5 RBIs, 5 Runs & 3 HRs

jj's WEEK THREE: Predictions

April 22, 2010
OK with me going against Minutemen and Agway hurt me, I went 3-4 (6-7-1) in week two. I think I have a better idea what teams are about. My Week 3 predictions are below. I also end my predictions with my player of the week. (based on stats) and now power rankings each week.
Please note this is for fun and for your entertainment...

GAME 1
Knights vs. Minutemen
GAME OF THE WEEK I picked the Minutemen to be upset last week. I am not making that mistake again. They played in a pouring rain and still scored 36 runs. They are averaging 34 runs per game and getting solid D as well. But the Knights are coming a huge run rule win vs. the 2009 Champs Fan Club. The Knights are averaging 23 runs per game and are a very confident team compared to 2009 TL a vocal leader, is looking to step up to elite status this year as a team and himself as a SS. TL said, “I feel like the switch has happened. I am playing great in the tournament and my fielding has improved tremendously.” This looks to be a high scoring affair, with the Minutemen holding on to a 29-24 win.

GAME 2
Knights vs. Warriors
OK the Knights get their double header early in the year, but the schedule Gods did them no favors. The Warriors are coming off a tough loss and will be ready to go. With their “Best 3-4 Hitters in the league”. But the Knights will be on their second game and be fired up after their loss to the Minutemen. I see the Knights taking this one down in another high scoring affair, 28-22.

GAME 3
The Shockers vs. Fan Club
The Shockers are coming off a huge win 29-22 last week over Dynasty and the Fan Club pretty much got imbarrassed by the Knights. The Fan Club come out of the gate hitting and never look back. The games goes the distance due to Shockers much improved offense. Fan Club take it down 23-17.

GAME 4
Agway vs. Cape Cod Crushers
Everyone knows what Agway did last week; they don’t stop talking about it on the guestbook. In case you don’t know they declared themselves “BACK”. Scoring a season high 39 runs and run ruling the very talented Smooth Moves. They got two wins last week. Cape Cod Crushers had a good game but was out lasted by Taxi 14-8. CCC will have to score more than 8 runs to play 7 inning this week. I picked against Agway last week twice and that might be the last time I do. Agway takes the game in 5 innings 23-8.

GAME 5
Smooth Moves vs. Outlaws
Smooth Moves is the best 0-2 team in the league. They have score 28 and 26 runs this year but are winless. The Outlaws are also 0-2, and have played two tough teams as well and lost to the FC and up and coming Wolf Pack. I think SM offense will show up once again and this will be a 5 inning run rule. 24-11.

GAME 6
Dixon Cider vs. Wareham Taxi
Dixon Cider has come back to earth after a 21-2 win in week 1. They got run ruled in 5 innings last week. Scoring just 2 runs. Wareham Taxi is 2-0 and have played well so far, run ruling Agway and taking out CCC. Will DJ show? Oh sorry Hank it is a team called Taxi… Taxi will remain undefeated in a good game taking the win 17-14.

GAME 7
Dynasty vs. Wolf Pack
I think the Wolf Pack is the surprise team so far sitting at 2-0 and was missing some players last week and still put up 21 runs. The Pack is the defensive team in the league after 2 weeks. They are also averaging 24 runs a game. Dynasty rocked on with 22 runs last week after a horrible 1 run showing in week one. The Dynasty don’t have the fire power the WP does, but this will be a good game until WP pours it on. WP stays undefeated winning going away 26-10.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Wk 2 – John Thrower, Warriors
4-4, 13 RBIs, 5 Runs & 4 HRs

POWER RANKINGS
1. Minutemen 2-0
2. Wolf Pack 2-0
3. Wareham Taxi 2-0
4. Agway 2-1
5. Fan Club 2-1
6. Knights 1-1
7. Warriors 1-1
8. Smooth Moves 0-2
9. Dixon Cider 1-1
10. Shockers 1-1
11. Dynasty 0-2
12. Outlaws 0-2
13. Cape Cod Crushers 0-2

NEXT: Anthony Messia

April 27, 2010
My new column "NEXT" is now in session. This will be a column to update/highlight the league on an "new/younger" player who is making a name for himself. I will try to do one each week. This week feature Anthony Messia of the Knights. Enjoy..

Anthony Messia , RC
Scouting Report:
Left handed hitter with power and hits for a high avg. He is a hard throwing, solid right center fielder.
2010 (4 Games)
737 avg. 4 HRs, 3 triples and 17 RBIs
2009 Stats (8 Games)
.682 avg. 7 HRs, 27 RBIs

BBSL fans know Kenny (STU) Stewart of the Fan Club, Jeff (Q) Kutil of Sandwich Agway and Nick (The Brick) Silva of Smooth Moves. And it's likely in several seasons they'll become just as familiar with electric-armed right center fielder Anthony (The Second Coming) Messia, just 25 years old. That's because, in the last few years, it's become increasingly common for the best players to leave--or abandon, as their other Sunday leagues for the upward coming BBSL.

Anthony Messia is a beast. That is what comes to mind when you think of him. He comes from a proud family from Wareham, and older brother Paul who was also a beast. He plays with passion, as his brother and Father always showed. He may sit with his hat sideways and his appearance is intimating but if you know him he is a great kid and just wants to be a great player in this league. He was one of the players Frankie Lydon decided was worth keeping and a good choice.

Picking the players who might make the leap to elite status is a favorite parlor game among softball fans. The name that's on everyone's lips this year is Messia, the 25-year-old Rapping who plays right center for the up an coming Knights.

"Messia is obviously the one of the top outfielders, but he's so young. He's the next George Meade," says Frankie Lydon, who runs the Knights, “Meade is a game changer at the plate and makes some great plays in the outfield. He (Messia) is our game changer as he did against Minutemen Sunday, hitting a game tying homerun in the top of the 7th.”

Not all the best young players will take the plunge to greatness, of course. Some will flame out before they become elite.

But many will try to become the next Kutil or Stewart.

jj's WEEK FOUR: Prediction

April 30, 2010
OK I AM LATE WITH THIS...

I’m back and went 6-1 last week with some better picks… My Week 4 predictions are below. I also end my predictions with my player of the week and now power rankings each week (Previously released).
Please note this is for fun and for your entertainment...

GAME 1
Smooth Moves vs. Dixon Cider
Smooth Moves won their first game last week after two tough losses. I think if you ask them they feel good about where they are at. They just got Fall All-Star Back, Sean Wallace and he solidifies up their defense. Dixon Cider has had an up and down season so far. With a big win and some disappointing loses. I see SM coming out with a bang and they have something to prove being ranked 8th after 3 games. SM wins 27-11 in 5 innings.

GAME 2
Smooth Moves vs. Wareham Taxi
A lot of talk this week on how good is Taxi. This week we should get a pulse of where this team is and what 2010 could be. OK BTB will not be there, so what. They need to score more runs to have a chance to win Sunday and I don’t see them doing that. Smooth Moves continues the day with another run rule and many more balls landing in the skate park. SM wins in 5 innings with the final being 24-9.

GAME 3
Agway vs. The Dynasty
LOCK OF THE DAY This game will be a quick one, but the injury bug has already crept up on Agway with Erik Shea’s status unknown at this point. The Dynasty is looking for their first win, but this week they will not get it. They did blow up last week with 27 runs. I think they will be down after a big first inning. With the new additions hammering it, Agway wins their forth straight run rule after 5 innings 29-5.

GAME 4
Fan Club vs. Minutemen Softball
GAME OF THE WEEK Everyone knows what the Fan Club can do and have done. But it seems everyone (including me) are already giving the title to the Minutemen. The Minutemen have been ranked #1 in my rankings since day one. They beat two up and coming teams in the Knights and Warriors, which both teams have lost since. Maybe this will be a real test for the Men if Fan Club shows with more than 8 guys. Fan Club has not showed any life so far. This might be the hardest pick of the year so far, I go with Minutemen in another close game taking it down, 26-23.

GAME 5
Wolf Pack vs. Warriors
UPSET OF THE DAYThe Warriors came back down to earth last week, well at least “One of the best” 3-4 batters did. They got spanked 31-7. I think the Warriors are a middle of the pack team because of the inconstant offense. Wolf Pack gave up 27 runs to a team that has not won a game, Dynasty. I have said I thought the WP might have one of the best defenses in the league. I think WP drinks too much cool aid this week and the Warriors bounce back with a nice late afternoon comeback. Warriors taking down the undefeated WP 24-19.

GAME 6
Kngihts vs. Cape Cod Crushers
The Knights are now 2-2 and having Anthony Messia featured in my new column ”NEXT” and TL doing some “WE WILL SEE” comments. The Knights feel they are better than their record. They come out mashing. CCC are struggling to score runs. They are averaging 4 runs a game. They can not win unless they start to hit. They have some ball players too.. The Knights struggle early, but take it down 22-9.

GAME 7
Shockers vs. Outlaws
Surprise!!! Surprise!!! The Shockers are shocking YOU. The Outlaws have had the toughest schedule of any team. They are 0-3, but they have played FC, WP and SM so far. Most teams would be 0-3, 1-2 at best. They are averaging under 10 runs a game against the Leagues Beef. This could be GOTW #2, this will be a back and forth battle. But the Shockers with their Power will be too much and will win this late with a big 6th or 7th inning. Shockers improve to 3-1, Yes 3-1. Shockers win 24-18.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Wk 3 – Terry Rogers, Minutemen Softball
Walk-off Grand slam in the bottom of the 7th.

April 27, 2010 -- POWER RANKINGS
1. Minutemen 3-0 (1)
2. Wolf Pack 3-0 (2)
3. Wareham Taxi 3-0 (3)
4. Agway 3-1 (4)
5. Knights 2-2 (6)
6. Shockers 2-1 (10)
7. Fan Club 2-2 (5)
8. Smooth Moves 1-2 (8)
9. Dixon Cider 1-2 (9)
10. Warriors 1-2 (7)
11. Dynasty 0-3 (11)
12. Outlaws 0-3 (12)
13. Cape Cod Crushers 0-3 (13)

jj's Power Rankings - Wk 4

May 5, 2010
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Wk 4 – Bruce Campbell, Fan Club
3 Homers, assist and a diving catch and was the main reason FC had a chance in this game.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Wk 4 – John Thrower, Warriors .875 avg 14-16, 11 runs 6 Hrs and 19 RBIs.

May 5, 2010 -- POWER RANKINGS
1. Minutemen 4-0 (1)
2. Agway 4-1 (4)
3. Wolf Pack 4-0 (2)
4. Smooth Moves 3-2 (8)
5. Knights 3-2 (5)
6. Wareham Taxi 3-1 (3)
7. Shockers 2-2 (6)
8. Fan Club 2-3 (7)
9. Outlaws 1-3 (12)
10. Warriors 1-3 (10)
11. Dixon Cider 1-3 (9)
12. Dynasty 0-4 (11)
13. Cape Cod Crushers 0-4 (13)

Minutemen took out Fan Club to hold the #1 spot.... -- Big Mover -- Smooth Moves, taking down 3 straight games and taking down Taxi then undefeated. On the other hand Taxi is a -- Big Dropper -- Got run ruled by SM and has had the lack of runs to support a higher seed. --Big Sneak -- Agway sneaks up on WP to take the #2 spot. Agway has run ruled 4 straight teams they are as hot as anyone and I debated on putting them #1. WP has been solid, but the fall in run production just a bit moved them out of that #2 spot they held for 3 weeks. Outlaws got a big win and moved from #12 to #9. The Knights stay put with a lack luster game scoring only 10 runs.

GOOD LUCK ALL>>>>

Preview: THE SHOW vs. THE GOLDEN BOYZ

May 10, 2010
BUZZARDS BAY -- A look at the “SUPERBOWL” of the regular season has 3 time champion Agway vs. a collection of “all-stars” Minutemen Softball. Agway has been called “old” or “Golden Boyz” and have been told “it is not 2006 anymore.” Minutemen have self proclaimed themselves as “THE SHOW”. One Minuteman has said,“It's a whole new league fellas for the most part? And Your only as good as your last game". This game will “show” how good each team is. This is the best show in town....And everybody knows this!!!

No. 1 MINUTEMEN (4-0) vs. No. 2 AGWAY (4-1).

These two teams have never played against each other, as the Minutemen are new to the BBSL. Many players have played in the league and have won in the league, but as a collection they have never been. Agway has been in the league since 2004.

Posted on the site last week. “The Minuteman will be practicing 2marra evening at 5:30 at 151, The BIG BOYS field...It will be open to the public if you are wondering? Refreshments will be served and parking will be free. If you stick around I'm told some of the guys will be signing autographs. After (may 16th) Sunday’s showing, I'm shore the place will be packed! Come 1 come all, This is the best show in town....And everybody knows this!!! Enjoy folks, you wont be disappointed. Matt Nee? You can bring your team down?.. We'll need a few extra guys fetching home run balls behind the fence! You will get a team discount. (PS....Thanks for being a good sport) --author unknown--

Storyline: The trash talking Agway and their experience of calm and cool in pressure situations will be taking on the very talented tournament guys from the Cape. JT acknowledged after the last week : “We don’t like them. They don’t like us.”

Key Matchup I: The Bats, both teams are averaging over 20 runs a game and both have 4 wins. Minutemen have a high score of 36 and Agway has a high of 39. Both have scored over 100 runs. Agway has 15 homers, and the Minutemen have 23, this is the major advantage of the game. Minutemen have 6 guys with more than 1 homer. Agway has run ruled their last 4 opponents and the Minutemen just took down last years champs last week.

X-Factor: The defense on both teams. Agway has gong 3 games without an error and the Minutemen may have the best infield in the league as a group. If Agway can play flawless defense then that is their best chance to keep pace. But both teams can not play D on balls over the fence so the score will be high scoring due to the amount of homerun hitters on both sides.

Prediction: Minutemen 24, Agway 22.

jj's WEEK FIVE: Predictions

May 15, 2010
OK, OK I AM LATE WITH THIS... But I am getting them done...

I’m back and went 6-1 last week with some better picks… My Week 4 predictions are below. I also end my predictions with my player of the week and now power rankings each week (Previously released).
Please note this is for fun and for your entertainment...

GAME 1
Fan Club vs. Wolf Pack
Why all the hype on the other game, this is just as good. WP are 4-0 and FC are 2-3, but have played a very tough schedule so far. It looks like both teams will be short handed. I think another long day for the once very strong defensive team, FC. WP has all those lefties and the Kelsch fam... WP stay undefeated winning a long 7 inning game 19-16.

GAME 2
Dynasty vs. Wareham Taxi
LOCK OF THE DAYTaxi lost their first game of the year last week. Dynasty has been struggling to score runs averaging just over 5 runs a game. Taxi will have enough to hold them off winning a lopsided game, 16-6.

GAME 3
Smooth Moves vs. Warriors
SM are now hot and look to keep on rolling. The Warriors have had a disappointing season so far. They had high hopes for this season. SM will rock them around in a 5 inning game, 24-11.

GAME 4
Agwau vs. Minutemen Softball
GAME OF THE WEEK "THE SHOW" See preview for details. Minutemen win 24-22/

GAME 5
Knights vs. Outlaws
They outlaws are coming off their first win of the season and shocked the shockers. But the Knights players have mostly continued to play outside the BBSL. They will continue their hitting they had on Sat. and end this game quickly with a 18-5 game.

GAME 6
The Shockers vs. Dixon Cider
The Shockers have the double header of the day and they are looking to get back on track after a disappoint loss to the Outlaws last week. Shockers young guns come out and kill the ball.... Scoring 28 runs and winning 28-14 in 6 innings.

GAME 7
The Shockers vs. Cape Cod Crushers
Surprise!!! Surprise!!! The Shockers are shocking YOU again. The CCC will feel the power of a double header and the Shockers continue to rock and score another 20 plus game. CCC tighten their D but their offense is still struggling, Shockers take this one 23-15.

--GOOD LUCK ALL--

jj Sits Down with Matt Nee

May 20, 2010
I sit down with the voval man from Smooth Moves who has built one of the best teams in the BBSL. We chat about the Big game this weekend, Bats and ex-teammates.

1. There is a lot of talk about bats. What is your take on the "altered" bats? Is there something we all should know?
I really don't have all that much to say about certain peoples questionable bats. I know I had been asked on numerous occasions last year and this year about certain players over there and their equipment.

2. What is the deal with the "Juggy" bat? same thing?
The juggy is "hot" according to them, but how long will a bat REALLY stay THAT hot?? 2 full seasons of 3 leagues and tourneys and fall ball??? When does it break?? Usually sooner than this.

3. Will you check the bat prior to the game?
We will see what kind of mood I am in.

4. You have a big game this week. You have 4, 5, or 6 ex SM players on MM. Why did they leave when you have been so close to a title?
Actually its 6 fulltimers from last year and Danny Orr who played a few games for us last year. Not to mention Carlos who was with Fan Club for 2 years and us the year before that.

5.How do you feel that 3 of the top 4 hitters for MM are ex-SM players?
We had a great squad. Still do. We od and they do. I wish Carlos would build his own team instead of taking apart another one, but he does have a track record of doing this before in Falmouth. He says it was all JT, I doubt it. If the 2 of them would stop blowing each other for a minute they would get to the truth about it....

6. What is your take on MM and their "cocky" adittude?
They are undefeated. They have 7 guys that played in the Sunday Finals last year, and Franny and Dax won Falmouth..... I've played on teams with 10 guys over there, they are all competitiors. They should be cocky right now.

7. With all the changes in your line-up, Who is SM biggest surprise?
No real suprises.... It's great to see Nick J step back in and swing well. Pookie is Solid.. Jimmy Gibbs is getting better every year, so I would have to say Gibba, but it's a tough call because Jeff King is swinging a great bat and has been filthy defensively as well.

8. Some games you are in LC, RC and so on. What position do you feel is your best position?
RF or C...If you remember in the Finals I was catching. I have a decent arm, range is fading every year... I can step in all over the place, but if it was an outfield question RF... I like RC best, but RF is where I would be best for a team.

9. You have been vocal about your arm, do you think you have the best or is it in the top 5 or so?
I have never been vocal about it. Others have been, I dont do my own player profile, I never have. The Wallaces handle it usually. Personally i think my arm is stronger in the infield as i get older...

10. Do you think you should be ranked #2 by me in my recent POWER RANKINGS?
Sure... It's not really a big deal. I just want to be the last team standing in August.

11. You and Kreag have had words on the site recently. What is the real issue there?
I don't wanna air it publicly.

12. Has he hit homerruns as his new teammates are saying since he started playing?
That's not true. He had a "power surge last year hitting 10, coincidentally when we added Jeff. If you rememeber the '08 Finals against Agway he had a chance to send us to game 3 with a 1b... but popped up trying to be a hero.

13. BACK to your team. Who is your best player this year?
Chad hands down!!!!!!

14. How do you see the season finishing, How will you finish and will there be a new champion this year other than FC or Agway?
To be honest it is anyones league. I do have a hunch it will come down to us and Minutemen in the end. It would be to good a story. There a 6 very strong teams this year, forget what Fan Club's record is, they will be there in the end.

Thank you and Good Luck this weekend....

jj's WEEK SIX: Predictions

May 21, 2010
OK, OK I AM LATE WITH THIS... But this is now a trend..

I’m back and went 5-2 last week with some better picks… My Week 6 predictions are below.
Please note this is for fun and for your entertainment...

GAME 1
Smooth Moves vs. Minutemen Softball
GAME OF THE WEEKWhy all the hype on the other game, this is just as good. SB II is an early start so make sure the women and children are up… Rumor has it many will be up early watching SB II this weekend. MM is undefeated and SM is 4-0 in their last 4 games. SM is the most explosive offense in the league, scoring over 24 runs per game. MM won last week against the #2 ranked team and now for the second week in a row they take on SM who is ranked #2 in my ranking system. I think the offense of SM will be too much, if SM can play solid defense. I see SM taking this one down, 29-19.
GAME 2
Agway vs. Fan Clubi
OLD TIMERS GAMEThe history is long, and it is pretty even. Once they were one and now since 2004 they have won all the championships between then since. Agway had a very bad showing last week after the bye week. While FC came out and knocked off once undefeated Wolf Pack last week. There should be a lot of jawing, but it will be friendly. Agway is looking to bounce back and FC is looking to hang on. Agway win this one is a battle 22-19.

GAME 3
Wolf Pack vs. The Shockers
These might be the most two unpredictable teams. WP looks one week like the defensive gem, then the next week they crush the ball and last week they could not do either. Shockers have been pretty inconsistent as well. Beating FC one week, splitting a double header the next. If both teams come to play this will be a high scoring affair. I see it being a quick game with the Shockers taking it 17-14.
GAME 4
Wolf Pack vs. Dixon Cider
DC looks to get to .500 and get some buzz from the league. But WP struggles in their first game of the day, but this game is over before it is started. The drinking team gets their own buzz on and smacks up DC 28-12 in five innings.

GAME 5
Wareham Taxi vs. Warriors
I cannot figure out how the Warriors have a 1-4 record with the offense they have. Currently ranked #11. This team needs to learn how to play winning ball. The talked about being the top teams in the league but they have struggle this year so far. Granted them and the Outlaws have had the toughest schedule so far, but it is evening out now as the week go by. WT is the total opposite, they are playing a weaker schedule, but they are winning games they should. They are getting good defense and a solid offensive output each game. Taxi veteran team holds of a late comeback with a 16-14 win.

GAME 6
The Knights vs. Dynasty
Most of the Dynasty got the old heave-ho from the Knights from 2009. The Knights re-tooled with some guys from taunton and from the area. It looks like it has worked out good for them so far. Dynasty has struggle so far, but are very talented and are looking to put it together and make a second half run. But the Knights will be too strong for their old teammates and take this in 6 innings, 21-8.

GAME 7
The Outlaws vs. Cape Cod Crushers
2Pac and the Outlaws have waked up with a big day against the Knights last week. Scoring 20 runs and impressing the Knights. CCC is still looking for their first win. They have struggled to score runs as the Outlaws seem to have found their stride. I pick the 2pac-less Outlaws to take down CCC 19-12.

--GOOD LUCK ALL--

jj's POWER RANKINGS - Wk 6

May 28, 2010
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Wk 5 – CHad PElleteire, Smooth Moves
1 Homer, 3 runs scored, and went 4-4 in the biggest game of the year.

May 28, 2010 -- POWER RANKINGS
1. Smooth Moves 5-2 (2)
2. Minutemen 5-1 (1)
3. Wolf Pack 6-1 (3)
4. Fan Club 4-3 (8)
5. Knights 4-3 (4)
6. Wareham Taxi 4-2 (5)
7. Agway 4-3 (6)
8. Shockers 3-4 (7)
9. Warriors 2-4 (11)
10. Dixon Cider 2-4 (9)
11. Dynasty 1-5 (12)
12. Cape Cod Crushers 0-5 (13)
13. Outlaws 1-5 (10)

Smooth Moves (5 straight)knocked of top seed Minutemen twith a 20-15 win. -- Big Mover -- FC, took advantage of a bad D and scored 13 in the 7th last week. Dynasty took out the Knights and the KNights have still not beat a team with a winning record. WP keep pace and are just staying under the radar. -- Big Dropper -- Outlaws drop another one.. after they had a couple strong weeks and drop to 13th.

GOOD LUCK ALL>>>>

jj's WEEK SEVEN: Predictions

May 30, 2010
OK, OK I AM REALLY LATE WITH THIS... But this is now a trend..

I’m back and went 4-3 last week with some better picks… My Week 7 predictions are below.
Please note this is for fun and for your entertainment...

GAME 1
Agway vs. Warriors
Agway are missing a few players, but with the the kind of D they have played it might not matter. The Warriors are trying to make a late run to make it in the top 7 and stay out of the mini-play-offs for the 8th spot. I see the Warriors taken down Agway with late homer by one Thrower. Warriors winning 17-15.

GAME 2
Outlaws vs. Warriors
The Warriors looking to double their win total and get to .500 on the year. The Outlaws have been an up and down team on offense. I see the Warriors winning game 2 19-12.

GAME 3
Fan Club vs. The Dynasty
he Fan Club showed they are still a force to be wrecking with after the win against Agway. But the Dynasty ruined the dreams of the Knights to become an elite team at this time as they took them down. The fan Club will get some better pitching and win this one in 5 innings 22-8.
.
GAME 4
Smooth Moves vs. Shockers
Timing might be everything, the Shockers have lost a few games they would like back, but now their schedule gets real tough and could their record probably will not indicate the type of team they are. SM tookk out Minutemen in the Game of the week. Smooth moves keeps their #1 seed with a fun game to watch taking it down 32-22.

GAME 5
Wareham Taxi vs. Wolf Pack
GAME OF THE WEEK Taxi has played the most consitant they have since they have come into the league. Solid d and a productive offense. WOlf Pack have taken some players off the 2009 The Replacements and what a difference. Wolf Pack has a good D and good Offense. With the Kelsch's and Beariults firming up the their D. I see Taxi playing well, but the offense of WP takes this one late. WP wins 19-16.

GAME 6
The Knights vs. Dixon Cider
The Knights are not happy with the lost to the Dynasty last week. The kngihts get their pitcher and their excuse back this week and Dixon Cider is who pays for the Knights loss last week. THe Knights win big 25-12 in 6 innings.

GAME 7
The Minutemen vs. Cape Cod Crushers
CCC, Dixon Cider, will feel the rath of last weeks loss. The Minutemen take out CCC with a 5 inning smashing 20-5.

--GOOD LUCK ALL--

Why Should the BBSL Make the Play-off format better?

July 1, 2010
BUZZARDS BAY -- Lets remember this is a softball league and it should not be run like a dictatorship or be a I say this and it is final. One commish runs a team and plays in the league and one Umps and makes money off the league. I don't care if you are a rookie team or a team that has playing in 15 tournaments already this year. Play-off softball against the same guys you have played and hung out with for 3 months has a different taste. This 2010 season has been the most competetive league since I can remember (1999) and the most drama, players leaving old teams for other teams. New teams, old new teams etc.

It now seems like the play-off format was mis-understood by some and not agreed on by others. Also it has come to my attention that the 2 men in charge at the manager meeting did not take or have material to take notes from the meeting. So they are going on just memory alone. This doesn't seem like 2 guys that take this league to seriously.

So I figured I would take the time to break this down. I think it is interesting that the league will end on 8/8 if you leave the play-off format alone or if you make the changes to have the final 8 play a 2 out of 3 series. (Below is my breakdown of the schedule for this format).

jj's ALL-STARS

jj's Play-Off Previews - Rd 1

July 16, 2010
The time has come for all the talk and guestbook posting to be backed up. There are 4 games on the schedule for this Sunday and this is how I see them.

GAME 1 -- 5. Agway vs. 12. The Outlaws 10:00 am
Agway finished the year 8-5, but lost their last 2 games of the regular season against 2 top 4 teams. The Outlaws finished the year at 1-12, but took down the play-in game last week. Their first play-off win for the franchise. On paper this looks like a major mismatch, with the Outlaws a young and inexperienced team and Agway with their veterans with all kinds of play-off experience. But Agway over the last two years have fell from their self proclaimed greatness, finishing 5th two years with each year now loosing their last two games of the season going into the play-offs. The outlaws are new to the league but not to softball, they have played in the fall league last year, but they won 1 game all year as well and got bounced out of the play-offs in the first round.
On June 6th these two teams met and it was not much of a game. Agway won 21-3 in 5 innings. I see this being a mismatch and Agway even with 3 starters short, win 17-9.

GAME 2 -- 6. Wolfpack vs. 11. Shockers 11:15 am
Wolf Pack finished at 8-5 and the Shockers after showing promise, finished at 4-9. These two teams just played last week with the WP taking it easily 21-8 in 5 innings. WP after starting 6-1 went just 2-4 in the second half of the season. Their defense fell apart at times and maybe they just stopped drinking during the game. WP is the team you really don’t want to face in a 1 game play-off because of their offensive explosions, with all the lefties they have. The Shockers lost their last 5 games after starting 4-4 and in the middle of the pack at that point. They just stopped scoring runs averaging about 8 runs a game during the losing streak. Their high was beating the FC week 3 and thought they we in the running for a decent seed in the play-offs. The WP will have the hammer and could be the difference in this game. WP takes it down, 19-17 in the last few innings to hold on.

GAME 3 -- 7. Smooth Moves vs. 10. Dixon Cider 12:30pm
Smooth Moves had high hopes coming into the season and lost their first two games and then were ranked #1 for one week after their big win against MM. Then they have never recovered. Finishing the year at 7-6. They face a new team that finshed with just two less wins, but SM took down DC on 5/2 this year 21-14. Dixon Cider full of college and high school players. Who have struggled to hit at a high level. Their team avg. is .458. Which was dead last in the enitre lead. SM will have a similar game as they did on May 2nd and take this one 18-11.

GAME 4 -- 8. Dynasty vs. 9. Warriors 1:45pm
This should be as close as the WP/Shockers game. With Dynasty the rejects from the Knights and the Warriors with good bats and below avg. defense. But Dynasty got back at the Knights beating them in their first meeting and almost taking them out again last week. Dynasty would get my vote for most improved team, as they 6-2 to finish the year playing some top teams in those games. The Warriors were talking in the bigining of the year and the Famous quote "We have one of the best 3-4 hitters in the league" The two have more than fadded away so far tha only one of them were named to my all-star team. They did combine for 18 homers, but the Warriors will need their 3-4 batters to hit like they did early on to take down Dynasty. This is a toss up game. I am going with the Offensive team as defense may not show up by either team. Warriors edge out Dynasty 17-14.

jj's ALL-SNUB Team

July 16, 2010
Here is the guys that have a bitch they they could have made the team....

In no particular order...

1. Carlos Freire, MM
2. Dax Fountain, MM
3. Tim Utley, FC
4. Jeff Kutial, Agway
5. Damon Albon, Knights
6. Frankie Lydon, Knights
7. EJ Smith, Knights
8. Jeff King, SM
9. Jimmy Gibbs, SM
10. Joel Anderson, SM
11. Erik Enos, WP
14. George Kelsch, WP
15. Barry BTB, Warriors

jj's 2010 MVP

July 16, 2010
I give it to Mike Walker of Agway. It was close decision as Bruce Campbell was a close 2nd. Without Walker Agway might have won 5 games and about 3 games he kept them close and gave them a chance to win. Walker lead the league in Hrs with 15(tied). Lead the league in hits with 38 and and total bases. He was 2nd in avg. with a .745. He was also a solid left fielder and made all 13 games.

jj's 2010 Jackass Award

July 19, 2010
BUZZARDS BAY -- Today I release my jackass award. It goes to Shayne King who is self proclaimed "one of the best Arms in the league". But his glove is not... He had a can of corn popped to him in the bottom of the 7th inning with 1 out in a very important game against the Knights as it turns to be home field next week. He just plain dropped it... He said, "I just missed it. It hit my middle finger and poppoed out." But his teammates bailed him out by getting out of the inning and saving his ass from costing his team the game.

This award is not limited to one player. If you have someone that should be listed on this award please let me know via Facebook message.

jj's Plus/Minus

July 20, 2010
UPDATE on July 20, 2010 --
Buzzards Bay, Ma. – OK on March 30, 2010 below is what I predicted prior to the league.. I think being off 1 game or even 2 is doing well. But some I was way off and I left my prediction write up and a after season write up.

2010 RECORD – 9-4
TL might have quieted, but their 9-4 record lead them to 4th place in a very competitive league. They beat some top teams and lost to ex-teammates Dynasty. But over all I hit them right on the nose.

MINUS 1

2010 RECORD – 7-6
This is one I got wrong. I underestimated the loss of key players to the Minutemen. But as it stands today they are in position to be in the final 4.

PLUS 3

2010 RECORD – 10-3
RIGHT ON AGAIN! They played well all year and even having a hard time getting players each week they put up 10 wins for 2nd place. FC didn’t miss a beat even with loosing 4 starters to other teams and the loss of their pitchers. Stu did great filling in.

MINUS 1

4. Wareham Taxi timing might not be great. They are getting better but the league is now much better than ever. They still have the "Big 3" intact and looking to be considered dangerous 2-5 batters in 2010. They will struggle compared to years in the past. They have added veteran BTB and outspoken DJ McNeil to their roster. DJ will help with their defense and BTB will give them a top pitcher..
2010 PREDICTION 7-6 (6th)
2010 RECORD – 9-4
OK they proved me wrong and with the addition of Barry it made a difference. It is hard to tell if DJ did as he made the minimum games. They lead the league in walks and if you know Barry he believe in taking a pitch.

MINUS 2

5. Billy Water’s Vikings aka WOLF PACK got Doug Kelsch back and added the BB boys and looks to be in the mix come August. Rumors this is the last year this team will be together. They are going for it, but will struggle against the top teams..
2010 PREDICTION 5-8 (8th)
2010 RECORD – 8-5
I did not see this coming until after week one when they beat the Knights and scoring a bunch of runs the next few weeks. With the Kelsch brothers and the Berriault brothers they made this team powerhouse.

MINUS 3

2010 RECORD – 8-5
OK I got hyped on the additions of Walker, Sully and Haley and thought they would be better than 1 game more than 2009 season that saw injury after injury. 2 out the 3 rocked it, but I was wrong how they would play against the top teams.

PLUS 3

7. The Night Owls Now the Shockers need to be the day owls if they have a chance to win a game in the play-offs. No major roster changes reported. Will have another tough year.
2010 PREDICTION 4-9 (10th)
2010 RECORD – 4-9
After going 4-4 and closing the year with 5 straight losses.. I hit this one on the nose. Now with their first play-off win they are looking to upset their next opponent.

EVEN

8. Warriors have an outspoken Matt Allen who wants to have his team be noticed, but with only winning 4 games each of the last two years it will be tough to come by. He will need to have another monster year just to win the four games again.
2010 PREDICTION 4-9 (10th)
2010 RECORD – 5-8
They improved, but record wise they really did not. I think if they can sure up their defense, then they can move up to the 7 wins area.

MINUS 1

2010 RECORD – 11-2
Pretty close, they finished first, and with the traveling all-stars are primed to take the title from the Fan Club. Lead by ex-FC Carlos and some ex-SM players. They are ready to take it down.

MINUS 1

10. The Dynasty is the newest team which is a spin off from the Knights overhaul of their team. Jamie Andrews will be running the show. He will be putting a team of his boys together and try to make a run at it, but will come up way short.
2010 PREDICTION 2-11 (13th )
2010 RECORD – 6-7
My biggest miss of the year. They finish the year as one of the hottest teams in the league and won their first play-off game.

MINUS 4

11. Dixon Cider what I know is Brett's team which will be full of Collage baseball players. Not much else...
2010 PREDICTION 7-6 (6th )
2010 RECORD – 5-8
Inconsistent, played good one week then had a stinka… They are areal good defensive fielding team. Once the baseball guys get the hang of the softball they will be a improved team.

PLUS 2

12. Kevin Carmine CCC is another new team and this is the ultimate mystery team... Heard some good things about the team that will be filled with area players..
2010 PREDICTION 3-10 (12h )
2010 RECORD – 1-12
Tough season, lost the play-in game to the Outlaws, but played hard all year. They have some legit players; just have to put it together.

PLUS 2

13. The Outlaws are a young team coming up and trying to learn the game. They had a tough fall season and I don't see them beating any of the top teams...
2010 PREDICTION 3-10 (12th )
2010 RECORD – 2-11
Kind of what I thought they would, a fun team with some good bats but struggled defensively. Get some more bats and they can move up the standing fast.

PLUS 1

jj's Play-off Previews - Rd 2

July 23, 2010
ROUND 2..... This is how I see them breaking down.... GOOD LUCK ALL>>>>

GAME 1 -- 1. Minutemen Softball vs. 11. The Shockers 10:00 am
MM are built for this time of year as they play many tournaments around New England. But MM have pulled a team that don’t only have the name to shock them, but they have the offensive tools to do so. But MM just smacked them up on 6/27 23-3. MM played last week in a tournament so they are still fresh. The Shockers took advantage of a WP team that was missing their pitcher and beat a powerful team. MM have won 5 straight games including a big win against SM in the final game of their season. MM get up on the Shockers early and cruise to a win, but the Shockers play 7. 24-12 MM win.
GAME 2 – 2. Fan Club vs. 8. The Dynasty 11:15 am
With all the rumors of the Fan Club breaking up after this year, (just like every year) they may be motivated to go for their back-to-back titles. FC has won 8 straight games as the Dynasty is 6-1, but that loss is to the Fan Club. FC has the hammer and the advantage with offense and experience. Dynasty isn’t just happy making it as far as their previous team, the knights. They want to do better than them as one of their ex-mates were cheering last Sunday for them to lose. Dynasty was happy to be playing FC and not get MM, as one of their players ran into me in Stop n Shop said. I have to go with the defending champs in this game with a good game but never in doubt, FC wins 17-9

GAME 3 – 3. Wareham Taxi vs. 7. Smooth Moves 12:30pm
Wareham Taxi has been fighting up hill all year, not with their play but with the questions on how good they are and that their record did not reflect the kind of team they are. Taxi add veterans BTB and DJ to help them at this time. Taxi lead the league in walks so BTB had some affects on their hitting. And BTB showed in their first game of the year they he would help them.. The very open Hammerin’ Hank was quiet this year and no one really knows why. SM’s leader Matt Nee said, “Taxi got a bad draw.” SM moves is the only team to beat MM in a game and took out DC last week easily and primed for a big upset this week. SM gave Taxi their first loss of the season in a 23-10 in a run rule. I can’t see the run rule, but I think SM is primed to take this game as the upset of the week, 21-14.
GAME 4 -- 4. The Knights vs. 5. Agway 1:45pm
This is the game of the week and as like most the year there could be more talk prior to the game to build it up than how the game will play out. The Knights walked off the field as winners as Mike Balz hit a walk off homer in week 12. The Knights have beat them the last two time in the regular season games. They have the hammer for Sunday’s game, they have the confidence and Agway is 0-5 vs. the top 4 teams this season. Agway is coming off a big win in the first round score 22 runs with just one homerun in that game. Agway will be without 2 starters, Tony Hughes and Eric Shea. These two are Agway’s lead-off batter, their cleanup batter and their starting SS. As I look at this entire scenario, I don’t see how I cannot pick the Knights to win this game. Knights win 19-14 in a back and forth game. (looks like TL will get that hundo from Nee)

jj's SEMIs Breakdown - Minutemen vs. Knights

July 27, 2010
Game 1, 2 & 3 (if necessary)
1. Minutemen Softball (12-2) vs. 4. The Knights (10-4)

Minutemen Ranks - Team Overview
#1 in the league with an 11-2 record
#1 in league with team avg.
#1 in league with Homeruns
#1 in runs scored

The Minutemen ran through the league just as they said they would. They won their opening round in the play-offs 25-4 over the Shocker last week and were having fun heckling the teams playing (most players with no shirts on). With all the Agway/Knights back lash over the last day or so, the Minutemen are staying quiet and getting ready for the semis. Minutemen are ranked #1 in all major offensive categories. They averaged 21.7 runs per game and that is with a forfeit included. They have dominated week in and week out.

Knights Ranks -Team Overview
#4 in the league with a 9-4 record
Stats are incomplete.

Certainly the Knights will be facing “Better Competition” this week as they take on top ranked Minutemen Softball. After the Knights have cleared the air and now they are moving onto the semis for the second straight season. The Knights held off Agway 10-8 in a low scoring match. The Knights are not lacking any confidence. Their top 4-5 hitters did all the damage against Agway. This week they will need to double their output to top MM. The role players on the Knights will have to step up and have a huge day. This is where the series will be won. They will have to lower their errors in this series as MM will capitalize on them

PREDICTION
These teams played in an exciting game earlier in the year as MM hit a walk off to end the game after some miscues on the Knights side in the 6th and 7th innings. Both teams have new players to the league, but the majority has played in one of the BB leagues over the last few years. Knights are the younger team looking up at the old guys and want some respect and are demanding it, but mixed with some vets which has provided a nice mix for them. MM are mostly season vets with 99% tournament players and have had hundreds and hundreds of swings already this summer. I think this comes down to who comes out of the game first. If the Knights come out in the top of the 1st with a stinka this could be a quick morning.

GAME 1: I have the MM shut the Knights down in the first two innings and take game one in an easy fashion winning 18-11 with the Knights not really in it.
GAME 2: I have the Knights bouncing back, but the MM put up a crooked number in the top of the first to take a quick lead. But this game goes back and forth all game with the MM having enough in the top of the 7th inning and winning the game 19-13 and moving onto the FINALS.

jj's SEMIs Breakdown - Fan Club vs. Wareham Taxi

July 29, 2010
Game 1, 2 & 3 (if necessary)
2. Fan Club (11-3) vs. 3. Wareham Taxi (10-4)

Fan Club Ranks - Team Overview
#2 in the league with an 10-3 record
#9 in league with team avg.
#4 in league with Homeruns
#4 in runs scored

The Fan Club finished the year with an 8 game winning streak and now extended it to 9 with their 10-4 win in the first round over The Dynasty. The FC who has the biggest roster in the league was lead by John Ciampa and Bruce Campbell who was my #2 in the MVP race this year. FC was 4-2 against the top 5 this season and beat Wareham Taxi easily just a month ago 23-7 in 5 innings. The Fan Club is the defending champs and there are many rumors of the FC future in jeopardy and it looks like they are focused on one more push at a championship and make a case they should have been the team of the decade. They have 8-9 players returning from the 2009 team.

Wareham Taxi Ranks -Team Overview
#3 in the league with a 9-4 record
#6 in league with team avg.
#9 in league with Homeruns
#6 in runs scored

Wareham Taxi has been called the luckiest team in the 2010 season. They only have 1 win against the teams left in the play-offs and got Smooth Moves with just 9 players and so on… I certainly didn’t think that Taxi could beat SM, but you never know which players would show up and SM was 1 player short. Taxi heard it all year, frauds, they haven’t played anyone, and they got Agway on a bad day. Taxi showed a lot on last Sunday coming back from 21-14 and it doesn’t matter who or how many guys were out there. Even after the Swing K from BTB with the bases loaded, they did not give in. Taxi’s stats don’t jump off the page, but they have now reached 10 wins and got their first play-off win.

PREDICTION
These teams played in an one sided game earlier this year with FC taking it down. The FC is the same team as 2009 and Taxi added BTB, and DJ who are suppose to take them to the finals. Taxi got by a tough team of SM and now takes on the 2nd best team in the league and will have to play better than last Sunday. FC knows how important the first game will be, but BTB also knows, but will the rest of Taxi get the jitters out of them quick enough to be in the games. The second game is the game that is usually more competitive. If Taxi can’t settle in and hit in the first game this could be a quick series.

GAME 1: I have the FC having a few solid innings to start the game and take a 8-2 lead going into the 4th and then jumping on a 9 run inning to open it up. This one ends in 5 Innings 18-4
GAME 2: I thing Taxi will come out with a fight and score a few in the 1st 2 innings. And taking a 6-4 lead into the forth inning. FC then has their big inning and takes a 12-7 lead. They both battle back and forth and FC holds on with a 15-10 win and move onto the FINALS against the Minutemen.

It’s Part of the Game…

August 2, 2010
Players miss games, due to work, drunk or whatever reason. Players get hurt during the year and during games. 2010 was not different. The average player plays 9-10 games out of the 13 on the schedule. But come play-off softball, most make every effort to get to the games. We saw Agway, Taxi and Smooth Moves, missed players for play-off games and to my knowledge none of them were injured. This is part of the game, it happens every weekend. Ask a tournament player, how many players he plays with over the 6-7 month stretch. If the roster is 15, they may play with 30 different players.

Agway missed Mike Walker and Erik Shea. Taxi was missing DJ and BTB. Smooth Moves were missing Jeff King and Matt Nee. It is part of the game…. It is just bad timing for these players not to be able to make the games. Other teams were missing guys as well I am using these as examples.

Teams benefit from others missing games and some don’t…. No excuses should be made, because next year you could be the healthy team or the team that has all their players and your opponent is down to their 2nd string players.

Health, a full roster and defense wins in this league and it is proven over and over… The Finals may not have all there, but they have 2 out of the three. MM are healthy and are one of the better defenses in the league and should have a full roster for Sunday. FC are healthy and should have their full squad on Sunday. (No matter what Cal says heading up to the game.) The other team that was in the final four, the Knights, had none of the three and almost pulled off the upset in Game 1. They made mistakes in the field and they were hit with a cramped cafe. And they had 10 players for the series.

The Finals feature Minutemen Softball vs. The Fan Club, both veteran teams with so much experience. More than half the players that will be there Sunday are tournament players. The mental game will not be an issue. It will come down to health, who is healthy now and on Sunday. A full roster, players to fill in for struggling or injured players. Defense, who plays the best on Sunday. No extra bases and no extra outs.

HEALTH, FULL ROSTER and DEFENSE = 2010 Champion….

jj's OFF SEASON - Power Rankings

December 7, 2010
BUZZARDS BAY - Off Season Rankings...

1. Minutemen Softball – 2010 Champions look to have their entire team back for 2011. Minutemen did have disappointing finishes in the Falmouth Summer league and the BB Fall Ball league. But as for Sundays they are the team to beat.
2. Fan Club – Runner up and if they stay together they will be in contention again. The rumor of the players “Hate Their Coach” could cause the team to fold.
3. Knights – The Knights came in with sights high, but fell short. With another year under their belt they will be in contention as well. If they can add one more power bat they can make a run.
4. Agway – More like a trend, two year now with no title games.. Now going on the 3rd year not even competing for a title. They have made news with two additions that should help “The best Agway Line-Up Ever.” Again.
5. Wareham Taxi – Regular season heroes, They did get their first play-off win last year again the disgruntled and only 9 guys on the field Smooth Moves. They will win their 8 or 9 games.
6. Wolf Pack – Rumor has it they have lost one of the best young talents for 2011. This could have the team fold or just try to pick up another Kelsch brother if there is one left.
7. Smooth Moves – A mess, this team is a revolving door. Can’t keep players and pick up new guys every year. Looks like their title dreams are just that….
8. Dynasty – No one thought the ex-Knights would play like they did. Taking down their ex-mates and making a nice mid season run.
9. Warriors – A lot of talk out of this team, but could only get 5 wins.
10. Dixon Cider – Best name in the game and has some great young players, defensively they are almost as good as anyone. This team will get better. They could also use some more power.
11. Shockers – Got the power, and had some huge wins, they need to improve defensively. They have one of the best new players to the league.
12. Outlaws – Getting better every year, need more power as well. They need to be more consistent.
13. Cape Cod Crushers – One win, good talent, need some power to improve.

11. Scenic Roots 1-3 (11)
12. Warriors 0-4 (12)

Suprise of the year is Dynasty, they started out 3-0 and lost their first game. But have scored a tone of runs so they will be in the mix all year. Another suprise is Scenic Roots 1-3 recors as they have not played a powerhouse team in four games. They would be ranked last but they beat the Warriors. Al so Taxi and Pipers still show they they are are second teir team. And the middle of the pack teams bev, DC and Dirt Dogs are doing what thye should... The Warriors lost the best 3-4 hitters in the league so you can not expect much from them.

Glad to be back.

The truth about JJ's Absence

May 18, 2011
BUZZARDS BAY, MA -- Let me first say, I'm glad to be back. I was forced out by the league and some of the players in this league and the other two in BB. I was investigating some activities amoung the 3 leagues in Buzzards Bay and the managment of the leagues were not pleased. Right before the season I was going to release my findings and the sh!t hit the fan. I am sad to say my findings will not be released and this is the only time I can even mention it or my career could be over. I was unofficially suspended, but I could post things on the guestbook but no articles. Enough of that...

I have heard and read all the post and jabs at me, from no name idiots on the guestbook to TL, to Strokioff to many others... I will keep an eye on you and I will get some dirt on you and post it...As for Stok, you had done an C+ job... The activity on here has decreased as the year has gone on... But thanks for holding the fort down... I know your team (Smooth Moves)folded like a bunch of bitches and took a position with the league. You will need to step aside as I will take my top report status back...

Thanks everyone,

Paul Kean: Investigated.....

May 11, 2012
PLYMOUTH -- Scenic Roots reserve infielder Paul Kean was excused indefinitely from all team-related activities after sheriff's deputies searched his home Thursday as part of an investigation by the department's Internet Crimes Against Children unit.
The team announced its decision shortly before the Scenic Roots faced the Warriors on Sunday. The team said Kean was excused "as he deals with the reported investigation" and declined further comment.
The 6th-year pro hasn't played in the postseason had a career year last year hitting .733.
Douglas County Sheriff's spokesman Ron Hanavan confirmed the search took place. Kean has not been arrested and Hanavan said no arrest warrant has been issued.
The department began investigating Kean in February after receiving information from a law enforcement agency in California. Hanavan declined to release details, including the nature of any pending charges, citing an ongoing investigation. He said they're asking that the case, including the search warrant, be sealed.
Kean answered the door at his Plymouth home, about 5 miles north of BB, and let deputies in, said Deborah Sherman, another sheriff's spokesperson.
"He did cooperate. He spoke with deputies," Sherman said.

The unit investigating Kean investigates child p0rn, Internet luring, child predators and child p0ornography.

The sheriff's office said it recovered property from Kean's home that investigators believe is connected with the case. Sherman said items typically seized by the unit include computers, hard drives and thumb drives, though she said she could not provide details on what items were seized from Kean's home, citing the ongoing investigation.

An arrest is not imminent, Sherman said, saying that it typically takes several weeks to a month for investigators to collect evidence from the seized items.

Mark Bryant, who serves as Kean's agent and attorney, said: "At this time, I respect the process and I have no further comment to protect the integrity of everyone involved. We'll proceed from there."

A message left at Kean's home wasn't immediately returned.

“ For me right now, I think I'm at a stage now where I don't know enough information ... The only thing I will say is I trust Chris. In my years with him, he's been fantastic and I think he's really grown as a person. We're going to support him and stand by him.
” – Scenic Roots coach Jeff Kutil -

"He's been dealt a bad hand by me," Kutil said. "For a guy that's played great ball for me and the Scenic Roots over the years, (he's) kind of been phased out because of the older movement, and in the middle of the season is not always fair. I personally think Paul is a very good ball player, can play for many team. He could play for us someday, if the situation would open itself up again."

Kutil said he had a chance to speak with Kean after the morning practice.
"He was emotional. I was in a state where I didn't think, I didn't want to spend a lot of time on that," Kutil said.

As for how the news might affect his team on the court, Kutil wasn't quite sure.

"I think enough guys individually have been told what's going on. I don't think we have the full information, the full story to analyze or scrutinize," Kutil said. "Like I said before, I trust Paul, maybe not with my kids now. I think Paul will figure this out."

Kean has not played in a game this season.
