Weather Cancellation Procedure

Game Cancellation Policy:

1.   School Closings:

a.   If a school is closed for the day by the principle due to weather, the games scheduled for that team are cancelled.  The coach of the closed school must still notify the Diocese, League Administrator, the school the team is scheduled to play and the associated coaches.  E-mail is an acceptable means to communicate this information if accomplished early in the day.

b.   If a school is closed due to sickness, the cancellation policy is the same as if the game was cancelled due to weather.

                                         i.    Games cannot be cancelled or rescheduled because basketball players are sick. If the school is open and the basketball team is sick, the game is a forfeit.

2.   Inclement Weather When Schools are Open:

a.   When schools have not been closed by a principal for the school day, but weather has turned difficult later in the day, it is the decision of the host location on whether or not to proceed with the games that evening.  Non-host schools can provide their opinion to the host, but should not just decide that their team will not be playing that evening (we need some procedure to avoid total chaos).   A past example of the chaos that can ensue in these situations occurred when a school that was not hosting games cancelled their school’s after-school activities, and then informed their players that their away basketball game that evening had been cancelled. In fact, their game had not been cancelled. This left us with teams at the host school location not having an opponent, when their venue was open to host the games. In summary, each school controls their own venue if a school has been open for the school day. Please avoid overstepping this boundary and grabbing unilateral control of a situation when the decision has been entrusted to a host school.  Email is an acceptable means of communicating a cancellation if it is sent reasonably early in the day.  Decisions made later in the day will need to be communicated through phone contact.  Please include the following people on on all communications

b.   The host school must determine by 1:00 PM on game day if weather conditions prohibit that days games from being played. If the determination is made that a game must be canceled, the coach of the host school is responsible for notifying the following:

                                         i.    The Refs  - George Markey

ii.    The League Administrator - Nunzio Pelligra

iii.    Each of the schools scheduled to play at the host school on that day

iv.    The coaches of the schools scheduled to play at the host school that day

3.   Rescheduling:  The coach of the host school is then responsible for rescheduling the canceled games and notifying the League Administrator of the rescheduling arrangements. It is desirable to make up canceled games on Saturdays as opposed to waiting for the end of the season to make up games.

4.   End of Season:  All scheduled games need to be completed by 2/15/15.
