One of the fastest-growing elements of our league is our travel baseball and softball program. We are pleased to offer a travel ball path for baseball and softball players in northwest Philadelphia looking to play more competitively through the Spring and Summer months. Depending on age group, our teams play in a mix of travel leagues, local, and regional weekend tournaments. As a chartered Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth League, each summer our district teams compete on the official national tournament trail in an effort to qualify through district, state, and regional play to earn a berth to the Cal Ripken or Babe Ruth World Series.
Eligibility
All travel players must be age-eligible and live or go to school in our defined Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth League territory. All travel players must register and participate in our in-house rec league. We do not have a 'travel only' offering. They have to play in our league each year.
Tryouts
Annual tryouts are held. Players are evaluated by a committee of the head coach, board members, player development staff, and if applicable, outside coaches (local high school coaches). We do not carry over or hold roster spots on teams. As a community league, new teams are formed each year. Teams are age-appropriate, meaning that for 9U and up, players do not "play up." If our total player turnout allows, we will form multiple teams in an age group ("A" path and "B" path, as skill and tryout results dictate)
General Travel Schedule (Not Official - Varies by Team)
Tryouts - Held in late Summer/early Fall. Check back for official dates. 7U baseball holds tryouts in March.
Fall - Weekly practices/scrimmages as fall sports schedules permit. We encourage multi-sport athletes.
Winter - Weekly offseason training sessions at a facility; some age groups partner with a professional coach to lead those sessions
Spring/Summer - Our softball teams may compete in a Sunday Select league. Many of our baseball teams compete in the Suburban Travel Baseball League. From Memorial Day through late July, teams will compete in a variety of local community tournaments (usually within 30-60 minutes of Roxborough). Some of our older age groups may venture further for weekend travel tournaments that may require an overnight hotel stay.
Our 12U baseball teams play in a week-long national invitational tournament annually at Dreams Park in Cooperstown, NY, as well as a weekend tournament at the Ripken Experience in Aberdeen, MD. Some age groups play in the Wildwood Beach Baseball Tournament or Blast at the Beach Softball Tournaments in Cape May, NJ.
Travel Team Fees
Our goal is to make travel ball as affordable as possible. Through the proceeds of our Roxborough Rumble Tournament hosted every June, and sponsorships and fundraisers, we are able to accomplish that and subsidize upwards of 35% of our travel budget. The rest is covered by each player's family. There is a nominal registration fee per player, separate from the in-house rec league fee that covers uniforms and associated tournament/travel league fees. The fee to play travel ball varies by age goup ranging from $200 per player to $1,000 per player, based on the program, # of tournaments, etc.
