Portland League Cup rules
Format
The Portland League Cup is a unique, season-long tournament run concurrently with the PFL. Unlike post-season playoffs where only a limited number of participants qualify, this tournament is designed to admit everyone with the hopes of capturing in-season hardware. The concept is to give every participant a chance at winning a league-wide tournament no matter what division or level of class / ability.
How it works
*Because the tournament runs alongside the PFL there is no need to submit separate rosters and the scoring system is identical to the PFL.
*All participants are automatically enrolled in the tournament. They are seeded in the following order
1. The previous year’s Portland League Cup winner is awarded the first seed
2. The previous year’s Tom Ebright Memorial Championship Cup winner is awarded the second seed.
3. The previous year’s Maine Shield winner is awarded the third seed
4. If one participant wins more than one award, the highest overall participant will be given the second or third seed.
5. Starting with the fourth (or first available) seed, participants are sorted based on their record from the regular season of the previous year
6. After all returning participants have been seeded, the first-year participants are seeded based on their order in the pre-season selection lottery
*Each round of the tournament consists of two games, known as “legs” or “home and home series”.
*Scores consist of each participants regulation score from the PFL. The participant with the higher aggregate score wins and advances to the next round of the tournament.
*Because this is a tournament, a tied series must be resolved to determine who wins and advances to the next round. If a round ends in a tie, a replay between the two participants will be held at the next Maine Mariners game. This continues until one participant wins.
*If in the event a series cannot be decided before the start of the next round, the following additional tiebreakers will be utilized based on PFL regular season stats.
1. Head-to-head record
2. Record / standing points
3. Point differential
4. Most points scored
5. Coin toss
*If the final round ends in a tie the second leg game will utilize overtime rules and the score of each participant’s reserve wing and defensemen will be used. If the game remains tied, the above tiebreakers will be utilized.
*Bracketing, assignments, and game dates will be announced on October 2nd.
Result Broadcasting
*The PFL will use the PFL website and the PFL Facebook page to announce results at the conclusion of the game. The PFL website will contain a full listing of scores and standings.
*Scores and results will be posted either on the day / evening of the game or the following day.
