Letter Policy for 2023 Boys Tennis:
To get a varsity letter a player must earn ten points.
Points can be obtained by playing in the varsity lineup in matches:
--one point for non-league match
--two points for league matches
--three points for team state tournament match
--six points for other tournaments (Ross Doubles, Sectional or SBC)
Scoring
The varsity team scoring in a dual match consists of five matches. There are three singles and two doubles. The team who wins the majority of matches wins the dual match.
The individual scoring in varsity matches consists of the best two out of three sets. A set is the first player to win six games and win by at least two games. At 6-6 a tiebreaker is played for the set. The tiebreaker is the first to seven and win by at least two points. When a school has won the overall match, we may have kids play a 10 point tiebreaker instead of a third set.
Junior varsity matches usually play pro-sets. The winner of a pro-set has eight games and has won by at least two games. At 8-8 a tiebreaker is played.
Will my son play today?
I will call all of the opposing coaches a week before the matches to find out how many players are on the other teams. Oak Harbor is usually has more players than most opponents, so everyone may not get to play every match. I'll try to let the Junior Varsity kids know a couple days before if they are not going to play. If relatives from out of town or someone is there to watch who is not usually there, let me know. Often, I can get an exhibition match going. Otherwise I'll always try to get everyone at least one set of play.
Coaching
The state does not allow any coaching or advice to be given by the parents during the matches. There are some coaches that really get bent out of shape if they see any conversation going on between anyone and the players except the designated coaches. I will try to watch all of the matches but, there is a lot of things that I will miss. If you see anything going on that you would like to point out to me during the match, let me know. Sometimes, something a parent has seen happening in a match can be corrected and may mean the difference in a win or a loss. Sometimes we may have to wait until the next practice to work on it. A player messing up on the score is something the players must correct. Coaches and parents are not allowed to offer advice on scoring.
When can I cheer?
Everyone is shocked when they attend their first tennis match. Cheering in tennis is a lot different than basketball or football where encouragement can be offered at any time. If it was up to me, we would yell and jump up and down and go crazy just like the other sports. Unfortunately, other coaches don't allow us to have that much fun. The basic rule of thumb is cheering is allowed after the point is completed, but cheering must be finished before the next point is started. The cheering must be positive. That is only after a good shot by someone, not after someone double faults or misses an overhead. The State does not allow parental contact or conversation during matches. We could always use more coaches though. If you have something you need to give your son, let one of the coaches know.
