BrewCrew Finish Runner's Up for Second Consecutive Year in One Run Defeat in Championship

October 14, 2018

BrewCrew Defeat Tampa Thunder to Get to 1-0

Zach O'Dell made his first start as a member of the BrewCrew in the US Adult Baseball World Series against the Tampa Thunder. The Thunder had not lost this season on way to four championships in 2018. But today would not be their day. The THunder struck quickly, getting to O'Dell for two in the first. O'Dell then settled in and only allowed one more run through the end of the game.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the BrewCrew magic started. Back-to-back walks by Kenny West and Troy Miller set the table for the top of the order. Andrew Clow had an RBI double and Zach Nadolny followed that up with a two run single to tie the game. In the seventh, the BrewCrew started the tournament with a walk-off.

Scott Merkel lead off with a triple. Three batters later Justin Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to win the game. The 1-0 start puts the BrewCrew into position to have a leg up on Tampa to advance. Next up is the 1-0 Charlotte Red Sox.

BrewCrew Smoke Charlotte, Move to 2-0

After the thrilling victory over Tampa Thunder, the momentum continued. Not even a two run homerun in the first off starter EJ Nadolny could halt the BrewCrew train. The BrewCrew jumped on the Charlotte starter with four in the second. Troy Miller and Scott Merkel had two run singles in the inning.

Charlotte responded with a run of their own in the third, but the BrewCrew scored six in the bottom half to open up to a 10-3 lead. Merkel had two more RBIs as well as Andrew Clow and Justin Anderson in the inning. But the scoring would not stop. In the end, the BrewCrew won 15-3. Scott Merkel lead the team with three hits.

The BrewCrew are sitting at 2-0 with one more game today. Another win would push the 'Crew into the semis on Sunday, even with two pool play games to go.

Devecchio Dominates Drillers to Push BrewCrew into Semis

After winning the first two games of the day, the BrewCrew found themselves in a game with the Tidewater Drillers. Win and advance the games tomorrow do not matter because they will have advanced to the semi-finals on Sunday. Lose and they will need to win both games tomorrow and need help.

But there was no need to worry about losing, becuase Mike Devecchio was dominant. He did not allow a baserunner till the fifth and that was an error. That guy ended up being the only run to cross for the Drillers. The BrewCrew scored two runs in the first inning when Scott Merkel had a leadoff double. He was hit in by Zach Nadolny. He later scored on an error off the bat of Dre Jones. Jones later knocked in an insurance run after the Drillers scored their run in the sixth.

Now that the BrewCrew are 3-0, they have advanced to the semi finals. They will play two games tomorrow to determine if they are the one or two seed.

BrewCrew Stay Hot by Slaughtering Pioneers

After a perfect Friday going 3-0, the BrewCrew had clinched birth in the semi-finals of the 12-team US World Series for second straight year. To clinch the number one seed of their pool, the BrewCrew needed to win one of their two Saturday games. BrewCrew starter Jason Christenberry threw a complete game shutout to continue the Pioneers' struggles in the World Series. The Pioneers had been slaughtered in their first three games and that streak continued as well.

Back-to-back-to-back hits by Andrew Clow, Zach Nadolny and Justin Anderson resulted in three runs for the BrewCrew in the first inning. Bandzwolek's two-run double in the second pushed the lead to 4-0 in the second. Four runs in the third put the game out of reach at 9-0. In the sixth, Clow singled home Scott Merkel to reach the slaughter-rule. Clow and Bandzwolek lead the offense with three RBIs apiece.

The win clinched the #1 seed for the BrewCrew. Next up is a rematch with the Annapolis Pirates. The last time that the BrewCrew met the Pirates was in the championship of the Chesapeake league where the Pirates defeated the BrewCrew.

BrewCrew Finish Pool Play Undefeated by Defeating Pirates

In a game that the BrewCrew did not need to win to reach the next round, but a win they need to prove their position in the state of Maryland, the BrewCrew sent Dan Rogers to the mound. Rogers had previously pitched for the BrewCrew in the York Colonial Tounament, finishing with 2.2 innings and no runs allowed. Rogers started the game, the same way that he left off in YYork, with two scoreless innings.

In the bottom of the second, the BrewCrew jumped out in front with an RBI single by Rogers to score Matt Gabrielski. Mike Devecchio then had a sacrifice fly to score Johnny Bandzwolek. Finally Rogers scored on a hit by Steve Cooke to take the 3-0 lead. The Pirates got to Rogers in the third, with six runs and thfour earned. Scoring fell silent till the bottom of the fifth when the BrewCrew scored four runs to take the lead. The rally was highlighted by singles from Andy Welling, Kevin Kopas and Mike Dececchio.

The Pirates responded with a rally in the sixth, scoring a run to tie the game. But the BrewCrew responded in the bottom half with hits by Troy Miller, A. Welling, Thirst Dantuano, and Matt Gabrielski consecutively. Then errors were the downfall of the Pirates. The seven run inning put the BrewCrew up 14-7. Scott Merkel threw the final two innings.

The 5-0 record for the BrewCrew sets them up for a semi-final showdown with the Greensboro Yard Goats. Last year, the BrewCrew defeated the Yard Goats twice, both close games, including the 2017 semi0final of the World Sereis.

BrewCrew's Late Rally Puts them Over the Yard Goats in Semis

The Baltimore BrewCrew and Greensboro Yard Goats found themselves in a familiar situation at te 2018 US World Series. In 2017, the BrewCrew had defeated the Yard Goats behind a stellar pitching performance of Stephen Cooke to advance to the championship. This year, the setup was the same for the BrewCrew. Stephen Cooke is on the mound, for the first time since going 2-0 at the York Colonial the month before.

Yard Goats got on the board first after the lead off batter walked in the first. A relay from Scott Merkel to Andrew Clow cut down the second run of the inning. But the BrewCrew answered back. Scott Merkel reached on a walk to open the bottom of the first. Andrew Clow reached on an error. Zach Nadolny followed up with a sacrifice fly. Justin Anderson and Ryan Welling's singles added gave the BrewCrew a 2-1 lead.

In the fifth, the Yard Goats knotted up the game, once again by walks. Then in the sixth, the Yard Goats rallied against Cooke. Once again the rally was centered around walks. Zach O'Dell relieved Steve Cooke with one out, bases loaded, down 4-2. O'Dell escaped by only allowing one run. O'Dell's ability to bounce back from a complete game victory over the Tampa Thunder two dayys before, the BrewCrew bounced back. Consecutive hits by Justin Anderson, Ryan Welling, and Dre Jones scored four runs and took the 6-5 lead. Back-to-back doubles by Merkel and Clow in the 8th extended our lead to 6-5 going into the 9th. ODell continued to mow batters down, finishing the final 3.2 innings with no runs allowed.

Next up for the BrewCrew, is a rematch from the first game of the tournament against the Tampa Thunder in the championship.

Heartbreak Strikes Baltimre, as BrewCrew lose 10-9 in 'Ship

BrewCrew Championship Starer Stephen Cooke took the mound. In the semi-final earlier in the day, Cooke had struggled with his control. Manager EJ Nadolny felt that Cooke's experience would give the BrewCrew the best chance to win. Cooke's control appeared to still be a problem in the early going but he escaped the first two innings with only one round allowed. Cooke's competitive spirit allowed the BrewCrew some time to battle back.

In the third, Cooke left down 2-0 and gave way to Christenberry. Christenberry struggled his way through the third and into the fourth before Zach O'Dell stepped up to stop the bleeding. When O'Dell entered the game, the BrewCrew were down 9-1 and did not look to have much hope. But a shutout inning by O'Dell in the fifth game the 'Crew some energy. Troy Miller and Andy Welling started the inning with singles. Andrew Clow helped the BrewCrew breakthrough with his second and third RBIs of the game to make the game 9-3. Later in the inning, Ryand Welling singled home another run and Dre Jones drove in another. The comeback was on.

O'Dell exited after two shutout innings. Justin Anderson entered in the sixth. Anderson proved to be excellent, with two shutout innings of his own. The bottom of the sixth started the same as te fifth, with singles by Miller and A. Welling. Clow knocked in another run, followed by RBI hits by Zach Nadolny, Anderson, and R. Welling (double) to tie the gmae at 9-9. After the 7th, R. Welling came into pitch.

The game remained tied through the 7th and 8th till Tampa rallied to tie take the lead. Miller lead off the bottom of the ninth with a hit for the third time in the game but it was not enough as the Thunder dogpiled and took home the US World Series Championship.

Each Scott Merkel, Zach Nadolny, Justin Anderson, and Ryan Welling had two hits in the game. Troy MIller and Andy Welling had three hits to lead the BrewCrew comeback that fell just barely short. Once again, the BrewCrew fell just short. Like in 2017, the BrewCrew lost by one, scored in a late inning rally.

Errors and Rain Halt BrewCrew; Fall into Loser's Bracket

The BrewCrew carried a long season of winning momentum into the semi-finals of the Chesapeake League's Winners Bracket where they would take on the Annapolis Pirates. The Pirates had given the BrewCrew somewhat of a fit this season, battling them tough in all three games. This would be no exception.

Errors derailed starter EJ Nadolny in the third as three unearned runs crossed the plate. Sean Welling entered the game in relief but was halted by a lightning storm that sent this game into Tuesday. Ryan Welling relieved to get out of the jam that Nadolny had left on Sunday and went on to throw a scoreless fourth as well. Devon Jerrard entered in the fifth and did not have his normal stuff. He allowed 2 earned and 2 unearned runs over five innings including 8 strikeouts.

The bats remained cool as a cucumber in this one till the 8th. Hits by Ben Henry and Connor Goodie sparked a two run rally to bring the score to 6-3. Then in the ninth hits by Henry, Matt Gabrielski, and Dre Jones plated Johnny Bandzwolek (HBP) and brought the tying run to the plate. But the rally ended there to give us our 7-3 final.

The five errors and five unearned runs leave the BrewCrew deserted in the Loser's Bracket, needing five consecutive wins to take the Chesapeake MSBL Crown.

Next up is the Chesapeake Brewers in an elimination game.

BrewCrew Eliminate Brewers with Emphatic Win

After losing last night to the Annapolis Pirates, the BrewCrew will need to win five consecutive games to win the Chesapeake MSBL Tournament. And let's make that one down with four to go. In the beginning, this game was a tough battle. Starter Zach Nadolny worked a perfect op of the first and then the bats got it going.

Dre Jones was hit by a pitch and later scored on an error. Z. Nadolny continued to roll with three more scoreless innings. In the fourth and BrewCrew with a 1-0 lead, the Brewers loaded the bases with one out but Z. Nadolny settled in to strikeout the last two. In the bottom half, EJ Nadolny got the rally started with a lead off double. He and Travis O'Brien (BB) would score on a single by the heating up Matt Gabrielski.

Tyler Mister took over for Zach Nadolny on the mound in the fifth. And he delivered scoreless fifth and sixth innings. Then in the bottom half of the sixth, the flood gates would open with an enormous 12 run inning. Jones, Kenny West, Z. Nadolny, Gabrielski, Ben Henry, and EJ Nadolny had hits while Connor Goodie had two in the inning. Mister got three outs in the seventh to complete his save and end the game.

Z. Nadolny got the win and went 2/2, Matt Gabrielski went 3/3 with two RBIs, Connor Goodie went 2,4 with 2b, 3b and 4 RBIs, and EJ Nadolny went 2/5 with two RBIs.

Next up for the BrewCrew is the Mid-Atlantic World Series.

BrewCrew Win in 11 to Advance to Chesapeake League Semis

EJ Nadolny started for the BrewCrew in an elimination game for the Chesapeake League Playoffs against the Chesapeake Hooks. Hooks took an early 2-0 lead with runs in the first and fourth. But the BrewCrew answered in the fifth with RBI hits by Zach Nadolny, Sean Welling and Johnny Bandzwolek.

The Hooks came back against Steve Cooke, who took over in relief to take the lead in the seventh. In the ninth, with one out, Zach Nadolny and Matt Gabrielski had back to back doubles to tie the game. BrewCrew finally capped the win on a walk off infield single by Bandzwolek.

Steve Cooke threw six innings in relief allowing only one earned run and capturing the win. Sean Welling paced the offense with four hits and an RBI. Next up for the BrewCrew is the Blue Wave in the semis.

Mister Leads BrewCrew to Championship; Cooke Catfishes A Win

Tyler Mister had his best game as a member of the BrewCrew when they needed it the most. He started for the mound for the BrewCrew and was excellent. He persevered through several errors and misplays that lead to runs for the Blue Wave. But the shaky defense was absolved by the offense.

Mister left the game, tied in the top of the seventh and enter Steve Cooke. Cooke is throwing his second game of the week in relief as he prepares for the York Labor Day next weekend. Cooke threw the final 2.1 innings scoreless. In the bottom of the eighth, Tommy Mazurkiewicz walked with two outs. Ben Henry then doubled to deep right center to score him and take the lead for good.

Next up for the BrewCrew is the Annapolis Pirates. The BrewCrew need to win two consecutive to capture the Chesapeake Playoff Championship.

BrewCrew Finish in Second of Chesapeake Playoffs, but Win Regular Season

After their tenth game in eleven days, a Co-Championship in the Mid-Atlantic World Series, a run from the last place elimination game, to the if necessary championship game, the winning has ended. One day before the York Labor Day Tournament, which takes five-to-nine games to win that championship, all momentum has come to a stand still.

Devon Jerrard started for the BrewCrew and had a little time to warm up. He allowed one unearned run in the first. Ryan Welling answered with a two-run homer to take the lead. The 'Crew then loaded the bases in the second with a chance to extend the lead but a double play stopped the rally. Everything went down from there. They continued to ground into double plays in the next two innings as well. Ben Henry had three hits as Tyler Mister and Ryan Welling had two hits. The Pirates then poured it on to take the championship.

This ends a great season for the BrewCrew where then won the regular season title in the Chesapeake and finished second in the playoffs. The BrewCrew hope to continue their successful season in the York Labor Day Tournament.

BrewCrew Take Home 2018 Mid-Atlantic World Series Co-Championship

Saugus Defeats BrewCrew to Open Mid-Atlantic World Series

The Baltimore BrewCrew start their mission to defend the 2018 Mid-Atlantic World Series against the Saugus Wings. Mike Devecchio made his first start of the season. The 2014 Cy Young Award Winner was sharp, allowing one run over 4 innings with eight strikeouts. He was relieved by his younger brother, Cameron Kalandros. Cam threw 1.1 innings, allowing two runs but exited with a two runs lead. The Wings were able to do something that no team has done all season, and that is comeback against Steve Cooke to send the game to extras.

In the extra frame, Saugus was able to put up two runs and take the win from the BrewCrew's grasp. The BrewCrew was lead by Bryan Nolan who recorded three hits, three runs and three RBIs.

Next up for the BrewCrew is Average Joes, tomorrow morning at 8am.

BrewCrew Defeat Average Joes, Advance in Mid-Atlantic

Sean Welling started for the BrewCrew and turned in a courageous performance of which even Curt Schilling would of been proud. Sean Welling delivered four shutout innings with a painful hip pointer to set up the BrewCrew for the victory. Andrew Clow sparked the offense with a homerun of his own to set the BrewCrew up for the 10-0 win. Andy Welling threw the final inning 1-2-3 to push the BrewCrew into the double elimination part of the tournament.

The BrewCrew received the #3 seed and will take on the NY Hawks in the next game at 4pm.

Cooke Dominates, BrewCrew Advance to Finals

In a die-hard pitcher duel, Steve Cooke proved why he is deserving of the "Best Pitcher in MD" status. Cooke shutdown the undefeated Clementes for the second consecutive year. The only threat came in the bottom 6th, when the Clementes loaded the bases with one out. But a double play ball to Kenny West ended the threat.

The first batter of the game, Dre Jones got one of a few hits for the BrewCrew. He scored on an RBI groundball by Ryan Welling. That run would hold. The BrewCrew added another when Johnny Bandzwolek scored after he pinch ran for Sean Welling on his single. Bandzwolek scored on a dropped pop up hit by Andrew Clow.

The win sets up the BrewCrew for a championship opportunity against the winner of Clementes against NY Hawks.

NY Hawks Return Favor to BrewCrew; Teams Split Championship

The BrewCrew defeated the Hawks in the semi-final only to have to play them again in the championship. Win, and the BrewCrew take home the Mid-Atlantic World Series Championship. Lose, and force the if-necessary Championship between the teams. Joey Zuniga took the ball for the BrewCrew. He has long time been a championship for the Brunswick Orioles and was making his first career start for the BrewCrew. It did not go as planned.

The Hawks jumped on the BrewCrew with four in the first and expanded the lead to eight to two going into the fourth. The BrewCrew answered behind Andrew Clow's grand slam but were unable to finish the comeback. Johnny Bandzwolek finished the scoring with a two-run homer over the scoreboard in the 7th.

In the end, there was not enough light for the if-necessary game and the teams split the championship. Zach Nadolny, Andrew Clow, and Zach Nadolny all had multi-hit games.

BrewCrew Finish in 3rd of 16 in the 2019 York Labor Day Championship

September 3, 2019

BrewCrew Advance to Second Round of Winners Bracket

The Baltimore BrewCrew started their return tour to the York Labor Day Tournament with Dustin Pease on the mound. Pease was yet to make a start for the BrewCrew this season, but had not allowed a run over seven starts with Brunswick and Frederick. He allowed the first run of his season and of the BrewCrew's tournament in the fourth. The setback was minor, as Zach Nadolny and Justing Anderson's back to back hits to start the fourth inning resulted in two runs.

The 'Crew was able to tack on one more run and win the game 3-1 behind Dustin Pease's complete game. Next up for the BrewCrew is rival Susquehanna Assault.

BrewCrew Punch Assault's Ticket to Loser's Bracket

The Baltimore BrewCrew's fiercest rival over the last five years has been the Susquehanna Assault. They are the only team that the BrewCrew has played more than five times over those five years that has a winning record. And the Assault's success has not been minimal, defeating the BrewCrew in over 80% of games played, albeit most of them within two runs. And today, the BrewCrew sent ace Steve Cooke to the mound, who has a career record of 0-12 against the Assault.

The Assault were able to score two runsthrough the first couple innings to take a 2-0 lead into bottom second. Hits by Ryan Welling, Matt Gabrielski, and Ryan McMillian in the second tied the game. The BrewCrew took the lead on a double by Scott Merkel and a single by Kevin Kopas. In the sixth, the BrewCrew extended the lead to 6-2 with hits by Zach Nadolny, Justin Anderson and Ryan Welling. The Assault scored three meaningless runs on a three run homer and the game ended at 6-5.

Every player contributed offensively to capture the victory. This also allowed Steve Cooke to capture his first victory and put the BrewCrew in position to win the York Labor Day Tournament. Next up is the Cecil County Braves with the winner advancing to the semi-finals.

Anderson's Three Run Double Elevates Cooke and 'Crew to Win

After defeating the Assault the day before, Steve Cooke takes the mound to try to push the BrewCrew into the semis. The BrewCrew jumped on top with hits by Zach Nadolny, Ryan Welling and Matt Gabrielski. The Braves jumped back with five runs between 3rd and 4th to take 5-3 lead.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Justin Anderson got his biggest hit of his young BrewCrew career with a three run double to take the lead. The 'Crew posted a run in the fifth and sixth while Steve Cooke got into gear to shut down the Braves.

Now, the BrewCrew are one of two teams remaining in the winners bracket. the winner of the this semi-final game will advance to the Championship game. The loser will play in the elimination semi-final game.

BrewCrew Sent to Loser Bracket Finals with Loss

After winning the first three games of the tournament, the BrewCrew needed a win in the fourth to need only one final win to take the championship. But it was not meant to be. The BrewCrew fought hard throughout. Joel Kenney, a loaner from the Chesapeake Hooks, making his first start as a member of the BrewCrew. Kenney dominated the game until a two out solo homerun in the fifth. In the sixth, Perky scratched one more across.

The BrewCrew was unable to get more than one baserunner in any inning and only had four total on three hits. Zach Nadolny had two hits and Ryan Welling had the other.

Next up for the BrewCrew is the winner of the East Prospect, champions of the Susquehanna (PA) League and the Cecil County Braves. The winner of that game will advance to the championship against Perky League.

East Prospect Sends BrewCrew to Third Place Finish

The BrewCrew called on their "Ace in the Hole", Miguel "El Gordo" Nunez to try to get into the championship game of York Labor Day Tournament. This would be a major accomplishment for the BrewCrew. Their last trip to York resulted in a T-10th place and a trip to the championship would bring the BrewCrew a purse of at least $1,000.

But El Gordo did not bring his A game. He allowed 10 runs over 4+ innings and the BrewCrew never had a chance. There was a couple misplayed balls in the field but nothing could of stopped East Prospect on this day.

The third place finish is the best for the BrewCrew in York. Next up for the BrewCrew is a trip to Myrtle Beach to play in the U.S. Adult Baseball World Series. Last year the BrewCrew lost in the championship, 1-0 to the Oklahoma Pelicans.
