2016 Player Registration Frequently Asked Questions

November 30, 2015

When is registration open?
Player registration for the 2016 regular season runs thru Sunday, February 28 for Minor and Major levels. For Tee Ball and Rookie levels ONLY, registration extends thru Friday, March 18.

Why is registration now done online instead of paper?
In order to get accurate player, parent, volunteer, and other information to the appropriate areas of our League quickly and efficiently, we've implemented online registration for the 2016 regular season and beyond. Among other things, this cuts down the time you spend registering each season, as well as the administrative time for our League's volunteers, allowing them to focus their efforts on improving the programs for our area's youth. We may offer some "live" registrations, too, though no dates/times have not been set yet. While registration is done online, paying online is not required (check or money order will still be accepted).

NOTE: you'll need to create a LeagueLineup user account to be able to register online. Along with year-after-year registrations having most information pre-populated for you, you'll be able to sign up for email & text alerts, schedule reminders, and more.

What method of payments are accepted? Any extra charges for paying online?

Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, or PayPal can be used when paying online, while check or money order are accepted offline. If you choose to pay online, there's a 3.5% "convenience fee" added at checkout, which covers our costs to process the payments. The convenience fee is optional.  As a League, we don't want to take on additional costs, and also don't want to force those costs onto you; therefore, you may still register online, but can choose to mail in your check or money order payment. You can even hand it directly to an Officer of our League. Either "paper" method of paying incurs no extra costs to you or Appleton Little League. NOTE: while PayPal processes our online payments, you don't need a PayPal account to pay (choose the "Pay with a debit or credit card, or PayPal Credit" option if you don't have or want to use a PayPal account).

Why is a Girls Tee Ball program being offered? Isn't Appleton Little League's co-ed Tee Ball program good enough?
Little League, Incorporated has different "League Age" determinations for Baseball (co-ed) and Girls Softball. Baseball now determines a player's League Age as of 8/31 of the year playing (as of 4/30 for players born prior to 9/1/05), while Softball uses 12/31 of the year prior to playing. With the age determination differences, this presents challenges and may leave a gap when advancing from co-ed Tee Ball to Girls Rookie Softball. Having separate Tee Ball programs helps the transition between levels. Girls are still able to play in the co-ed Baseball Tee Ball program, and are always eligible to play in any of the higher-level baseball programs, too (though Baseball league age determination date will be used).

Offering a dedicated Girls Softball Tee Ball will also help build a good foundation for the rest of our Softball program - Rookie, Minor, and Major levels. UPDATE: Confirmed on 2/17/2016, Girls Softball Tee Ball will be introduced this year, in 2016! Our current registration numbers show we'll have enough teams and there's room for many more!

2016 Appleton Little League Player Registration Information & Disclosure

November 30, 2015

After completing and submitting the online Registration Form and payment, registrants will be contacted by their respective Player Agent or other League official prior to tryouts (early March) or team assignments (in April). Please visit our website, www.AppletonLittleLeague.org, to stay up-to-date with Appleton Little League events and for more detail on each program.

Appleton Little League served over 1,200 boys and girls in 2015. The league operates under two Little League Charters, geographically-split, offering both baseball and girls softball at several playing levels, including tee ball. The baseball and softball divisions are each under the management of a dedicated Commissioner & Player Agent, who each report to a Vice President of Baseball and Softball, respectively. Appleton Little League Charters are National (North) and American (South), with the Fox River as the dividing line. See the boundary map on our website for details.

Players must play in the division in which they live *or attend school. Levels of play are determined primarily by Little League Age.

  • Girls Softball, Little League Age is determined based off age as of 12/31/2015
  • Co-ed Tee Ball & Baseball:
    • Born prior to September, 2005: League age determined as of 4/30/2016
    • Born on or after September 1, 2005: League age determined as of 8/31/2016

See League Age charts at the end of this article.

The seasons run from late April to early August, depending on age level and tournament activity. Games are in the evening, and teams play an average of two games per week during the regular season. Appleton Little League is a competitive, evening league that plays on the Appleton Parks & Recreation, Appleton School District, and Scheels USA Youth Sports Complex baseball and softball fields. Our league could not operate without the support of those community participants.

Volunteering
Appleton Little League could not function without a broad base of volunteers. All families are expected to support the League via a time commitment. There are opportunities noted on the Registration Form at the Team, Division and Board level – please check off on at least two areas of interest. For a detailed description of each volunteer position, please review our volunteer information sheet on our website forms gallery. If you are in a position to offer a corporate sponsorship to a team, please email: Sponsorship@AppletonLittleLeague.org

Fundraising
Fundraising involves selling two boxes of Vande Walle’s candy. Families choosing to sell candy bars will pay Appleton Little League $80 in April and receive 80 candy bars (40 per box). Just sell the 80 candy bars for $1 each and the money stays with the family.

* Players who would like to play in a division based on school attendance, must complete the “Little League School Enrollment Form” (available on our web site) and submit with registration.

Levels of Play

Baseball Major League (ages 10-12): The Major League is the highest and most competitive level of baseball in Appleton Little League. All players age 10-12, who did not play on a 2015 Major League team must try out for the Major League level. Minimum playing requirements for the regular season include 2 innings of defense and 1 at-bat, subject to a complete game being played. In Appleton Little League, 9-year-olds are not allowed to play in the Major League. All 12-year-olds that try out are assured a Major League spot, unless upon unanimous (with parent’s initiating) vote by all involved, including President and District Administrator, the child is deemed a safety concern, and allowed to play in the Minor League.

Baseball Minor League (9-11): The Minor League is a player pitch league, much like the Major League, providing a bit more emphasis on player development and participation. All 9-year-olds, and all 10- and 11-year-olds not drafted to a Major League team will be drafted to a Minor League team in their division, guaranteed. Only kids aged 11 and under are allowed to pitch at this level. There is a continuous batting order and more minimum playing time in the field. Minor teams are redrafted each year.

Baseball Rookie League (7-8): The Rookie League is a machine pitch (coach-assisted) League. This league is instructional and developmental in nature, but does allow for scorekeeping and a competitive environment. Teams are formed first by division, then by school, but with respect to more evenly-matched age clusters. Special requests for playing with friends, or with certain coaches will not be considered.

Co-ed Baseball Tee Ball League (4-6): Boys and Girls play together (4-5 Beginner or 5-6 Advanced). Special requests will not be considered.

Softball Major League (11-12): The Major League in Softball is for 11- and 12-year-olds, with tryouts for players not previously on a Major League team. This is a competitive fast-pitch program. The 12-year-old rules noted in baseball Major League section of this sheet also apply to Softball.

Softball Minor League (9-10): The Minor League is also a player pitch, fast-pitch league, with rules modified to be age and skill level appropriate. 8-year-olds are allowed to tryout, but must be drafted and are not guaranteed to play at the Minor level. If not drafted to Minor, will be placed on a Rookie level team and will not need to participate in fundraising. A signed form of explanation will be required at a later time, before a skills assessment and/or tryout.

Softball Rookie League (7-8): This Coach-pitch League is instructional and developmental in nature, and seeks to teach the basics of softball to girls age 7-8. Teams are generally formed based on school attending. Special requests for playing with friends, or with certain coaches will be considered. 6-year-olds must have completed one year of Little League Tee Ball and request an skills assessment, and be accepted by the Commissioner/Player Agent in order to play in Rookie. If not accepted into Rookie, will be placed on a Tee Ball level team and be refunded the difference in Registration cost. A signed form of explanation will be required at a later time, before a skills assessment.

Softball Tee Ball League (4-6): Girls play together. Special requests will not be considered.
