| Looking for some help. Can a player that plays OBA AA but wants to play AAA make that move without a problem. The current association has a AAA team but we don't believe they will be picked up and may want to go to another association to play AAA. Can their current association hold them? I hope above makes sense, not sure how this works

| So you want to play AAA. Good for you!! You can attend as many tryouts as you wish in as many associations you want without a release. Keep in mind that you must attend tryouts for your own association.
If the association you reside in does not pick you up, you may seek a spot on a AAA team in another association. If you land a spot at the AAA level, you must get a release from your present association. Given that your present association's AAA team didn't pick you up, they should grant you one even if the AA team wants you.
If they deny your release, it's a red flag that should tell you something. I suspect that the AA coach wants to keep the player for himself and is trying to block the release. Whole new can of worms here.
Please keep in mind that the release will most likely be granted without a problem if you land a spot on another AAA team.
It can get complicated, so my best advise to you is to go to all the tryouts and see what doors open for you at the AAA level.
Have fun in the meantime and good luck!!

| Can players just go to any tryouts? I thought there was a rule or association rules that state you can't tryout for another association without a release? Maybe this is just for some associations, not sure.

| Yes, a player can attend as many tryouts they wish without a release.
Like I said, they must attend tryouts for their present association as a courtesy.
This player is already at the AA level, but is seeking a spot at the AAA level. He is entitled to play at this level for whatever association is willing to give him a chance. The only way to do that is to attend other tryouts. Any coach that tells you otherwise is wrong.
If he lands a spot in his present association's AAA team, then great!! If not, well then there should be nothing to stop him from shopping around.
Narrow-mindedness and selfishness has no place here. It's all about letting anyone play at the level they are entitled to, whether its with their own association or somewhere else.

| Fly Ball, Is what you are saying, printed somewhere in the rule book/association rules etc. I am hearing conflicting information about trying out for a non local team without first being released from your local association. Also, if the player didn't play rep last year, only select(soba)...do they even need a release or have to attend the local tryouts?

| I did read on the OBA web site that a player can only attend another city try-out if they have a release from their previous city/team. It says that a coach can be subject to suspension if they allow it and same goes for the player.

| Yes they are correct. The info I got (a couple of years ago) came from a former VP of rep himself. We had to go through the process and that is what he informed me. What I didn't know is that it only pertained to the association I was with.
It seems that the rules change like the wind. He's my beef. There is no clear cut written rule or regulation that govern such things like releases and import rules. Some say this and some say that from year to year. What I'd like to see is this site post something maybe the minutes form the coaches meeting? That would be a start.
We pay the $$ when we register, so why can't we choose where?

| Hi Due to associations not dealing with releases until after tryouts is not reasonable when rules dictate that a player cannot go to another association tryout without a release. I did as our VP of Rep and was told we didn't have to have a release to go to other tryouts? So it is a little conflicting with the rules. Personally, no one should hold any child if they wish to go elsewhere. I have seen tryouts where they string along players and make them keep coming back but have no real interest in picking up the child but in the end, the child loses because their hopes were completely based on this one team and now they missed all the other tryouts. As parents, regardless of their level, we should be able to direct our children to associations that best suit the child. If a player has Coach issues and this has been expressed to the club, how can they hold the child? Why would they do that? For those struggling, keep pushing and if necessary, take it to COBA and OBA.

| I am guessing a fair amount of people here are compalining about the same organization or maybe 2 of them.
People seem to be affraid to stand for they fear something may happen to them. I can tell you with 1 of the organizations it will.
I wish people would come together and fight the organization as a group instead of by themselves. The results would be better, insteat the organizations keeps telling everyone who comes forward the problem is them not the league. I can tell you from going elswhere for a looks see the problem is the league.
If anyone wants to group together lets organize and go forward with our issues instead of just sitting back. I can say for my son I have gone to the league and ask for a release and was turned down. I have to wait a little while longer for try outs to end to see if I can have a release or not. I have also contact people in the OBA and asked what my next steps are. I am prepared to go all the way with it.
My son went to another try out and after just 1 try out he was shocked at how much better it could be. He told me he lost his passion for the game and after 1 try out it was back. That is enough for me to keep fighting those who hold him back.

| water101.......I think it is really sad that somewhere along the line associations have forgotten it's about the kids, regardless if 10 or 15. If a kid does not want to play for a team, why do they hold them back? We see kids year after year tryout for AAA teams, only to be turned away but when they secure a spot somewhere else, they get nothing but politics. I hope your son get's his release and plays where it is best for him.....

It is a kids game but adult still want to have there little power trips. It is really sad that baseball is the only minor sport that is like this. If it were hockey or soccer he would be long on his way to a better situation and increased self worth. We all just wants whats best for our kids and some one should wake up and stop thinking about what is best for them and worry more about the kids.

| Well, sometimes we read about Releases, participate on what we think is right but I am now in the middle of reality! I am shocked that associations ignore requests, you escalate and still no response. What was surprising is that it is apparent that no one governs the associations? COBA says they can't do anything and OBA doesn't respond........there is no resoning to not give a release, just an association trying to show power but comes across as stupidity because your jeopardizing a child's place next season. Children are playing the game but power tripping adults are searching for power that obviously doesn't exist for them in their "real" day to day lives. Who helps the kids? Who stands up for them in an associations? Well, thank goodness for newspapers that love stories on Youth associations not keeping with the "it's all about the kids" statements.

| The City of Mississauga does quote that every associated club must have 100% Mississauga Residency. But due to quite a few people contacting the city, they are doing an audit on many youth sports and I think you will find that this is going to change for 2009. Water......be careful that coaches are not assuming this is o.k. because the City has not finalized anything yet. Best to contact the Parks and Rec department at the city and ask the status of the possible residency percentage to be sure. It is time for this to change because Soccer, basketball and hickey are able to do it at a Rep level, so unsure why baseball does not.

I would like to know specific information about getting around the residency rule in Mississauga. Does anyone know how to "legally" get around this residency rule there? OR what are the current "imports" doing to get around the rules and regs there?

| Unless someone can prove to me otherwise it appeaers to me that it is TOTALLY upto the coach of th team. He may except imports if he wishes. I think the reason some dont is there is too much loyalty to the current team members - and their is a fairness issue. This to me is totally wrong since playing AAA/AA should be about trying to field the best team possible.

| I am here to correct you. Mississauga does not (legally) allow imports period. I have heard that the city is thinking about relaxing this regulation but as of today, no imports. It is not up to the coach. If you do not believe it, call the President of any Assoc in Miss or better yet speak to Hazel. I for one, think this needs to be changed in order for the Miss teams to compete at most ages. Demographics in the Majors and Twins territories are changing and there are less and less children signing up to play baseball. In most ages, these two teams have to take whoever shows up to tryouts and then the team is not competitive against the superteams. Just my two cents.

| Nothing has changed. If residents from outside of Miss have played for a Miss team, they have used a fake address. Happens in hockey all the time. That is why I said legally. They only way you would get caught is if someone snitched. As for the Majors, I do not know for sure why they are advertising this. Perhaps they got a waiver exemption from the city because as of today they do not have enough players to field a team. The city might ok a couple of imports so that the team does not fold. Just a guess.

| I see the difference here...the coaches and players/parents of players who can operate in an environment of deceit get away with it. The people who follow rules are bound by the rules. Can anyone explain why these rules exist? I for one will not expose or call upon my child to lie to his team mates or chance getting caught making all games he played in be subject to protest. It really is a shame that the powers to be have lost focus on what baseball is all about. The kids just want to play and have fun.

I can't speak for all cities but in Miss it was explained to me this way. Hazel does not feel it is fair for a non Miss taxpayer's child to take playing time away from a taxpayer's child. Miss residents pay taxes to maintain the facilities and they should be the ones using them. It is not a baseball rule. The same rule applies to all Miss sports leagues using City subsidised facilities. Some cities could care less about this philosophy (see Georgetown). I can see her point but it does make it hard to compete without an equal playing field. My issue is why you need a release to move from one Miss team to another. If you are a Miss resident, you should be able to play for any Miss team.

If Hazel feels that way then those Miss rep teams will never be able to compete with other AAA teams. I'm seeing this already. I wont mention the age but the Twins, Majors, Tigers at this particualr age have at least 4 or 5 players on each that should be playing down 1 level (maybe 2 - re: house league). At the AAA level teams shoud be able to easly field a good starting 9.
Further, the starts on those teams will end up leaving to better organizaions or elite teams.

| I know this example is of soccer and not baseball but don't jump all over me. Mississauga soccer allows imports up to 50% of the team even at the younger ages of 9 and up. Brampton allows imports in soccer as well. Brampton is also allowed imports for baseball but does not want any unless you are the right person asking. They pick certain coaches they will allow to have imports and other they will not.
I think Brampton and Mississauga have gotten together for baseball and try to keep imports out. That being said Mississauga has imports as does Brampton. The city as far as I know limit the number of imports a sport assoc. can have based on registration. For Brampton soccer it is limited to 6 or 8 per AAA team. I am using soccer because a friend was involved with Brampton soccer and now took his son's out of Brampton and 1 plays as an import in Mississauga.

| I am not involved in soccer so I can't comment on their import rule. Do these soccer org's pay full price for the soccer fields or do they use private facilites vs. getting subsidised rates from the city. If they are not subsidised then they would not have to follow the same rules. The Baseball diamonds and hockey rinks permit fees for the Miss teams are subsidised by the city. As for the Miss teams having trouble competing, I agree. The Tigers will always be able to compete because of the huge drawing area of their boundaries however the Twins and the Majors have such a small drawing area that they are always in tough. They should combine the Twins and the Majors and only have two org's in Miss. Not enough baseball players to go around. Either that or open it up to imports.
