HOUNDS TRIPPED UP BY THUNDERBOLTS
After a rainout the previous weekend, the prestigious Hammonton Tournament finally got under way. It is an invitational tournament that pits sixteen of the top teams in South Jersey to determine a winner. The hounds drew Millville High School in the first round, they being the defending champion of the tournament in 2018. The dawgs had won eight in a row and despite the competition felt in good shape to dismantle the thunderbolts and eventually take home a title that had historically eluded the yappers. The game started with Nicole Bondoc getting a base hit up the middle only to have the umpire rule that Bon had not been in the batter’s box at contact. In the bottom of the first, Millville scored a run on a home run from the pitcher. The score remained that way until the bottom of the third when the bolts scored three runs to take a 4-0 lead. The dawg pound cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth as Lex Blue led off the inning with a high arcing ball over the centerfield fence. The hounds would score another run in the inning as Jules singled. As the befuddled Millville players were caught unaware, the cunning Jules seeing that thunder was in the distance bolted into second base. Millville would score another run in the fifth and that would be the scoring for the day –final score 5-2.
NOTES- A disappointing day for the hounds on a weekend where they thought that they would be playing four games. The dawgs outhit the opposition 7-5 and had base runners on in six of the seven innings. Nikki B with two hits on the day. The hounds showed their guile by being down 5-2 in the seventh and never giving up as they had three solid hits with two outs but that was not enough. Although the loss was a tough one for the yappers, the coming week promises to be the biggest of the season so far. Five games in five days, three night games and three games against divisional opponents. Whew.
