FALCONS EDGE HOUNDS

The much anticipated rematch between the two top ranked teams in Burlington County and Central Jersey Group III had been viewed as a must see game for weeks. With a win the hounds had the opportunity to possibly leapfrog Township into the top slot in Group III. With the stakes this high, it was inevitable that the game would be close and exciting. The game certainly lived up to the billing. In the top of the first Nikki led off with an infield single but was erased as she tried to steal second. In the bottom of the first, the falcons got two runs off of a home run and took a 2-0 lead. The hounds spent the rest of the day trying to cut into this lead. They seemed to be ready to chomp into this lead at several times. From the fourth through the seventh innings, the dawgs had a runner in scoring position in every inning. In six of the seven innings they had a runner on base. Lexie Blue lined a solid shot down the right field line in the fourth. Jules scalded a ball down the third base line in the sixth and came home on a texas leaguer by arch. Riley Gripp drove a fly ball down the left field line in the top of the seventh for a double. Hmm…..could that have been yard work in the friendly confines of Mansfield Road?????? So, it seemed that the theme of this game was that the dawg pound was yapping at the door but just couldn’t break through.
NOTES- The game plan was to get at least seven runners on base to win this game. The dawgs had eleven base runners. The falcons had seven base runners while only getting three base hits. If there was such a thing as a silver lining in this game, it was that the hounds know that they can hit the pitching of the opposition and that they will hopefully have the opportunity to show this if they meet again in the finals of the Central Jersey Group III. Gripper had two hits on this sunny and warm day and Arch fanned 14 falcons. The hounds continue their five day five game journey with senior night on Wednesday against Moorestown.
