WESTERN CONFERENCE - PREVIEWS

York Diamonds

Head Coach: Paul Freeman

2012 Standing: 17-7-2 (1st in Western Conference)

# Of Years In OSBA: 4th

# Of Finals Appearances: 1

# Of Championships: 0

Twitter Handle: N/A

Defining Franchise Moment:  Winning its first 8 playoff games in 2012 and being up 2-0 in the best of 5 finals, then go on to lose the next 3 straight.

Key Losses: Tsukasa Murakoso, Ernie Morrison, Justin Williams, Nick Guglielmo

Key Additions: Matt Graham, Jamie Parkes, Andrew Greig, Brian Dikdan

Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013:  York got off to a slow start in 2012, but caught fire in the 2nd half.  They carried the hot streak to a 1st place finish in the western conference, before rolling through the Twins, Mets and Majors on its way to the OSBA final.  The York Diamonds were within one win of the title last year, but the team is in a state of flux this season. With a high volume of part-time players, the lineup may look different every night and it's anyone’s guess how the on-field product will fare. Lefthander Tsukasa Murakoso returns to Japan, leaving a huge void in the starting rotation

3 Team Goals For 2013:

#3 – A team scouting trip to Japan.

#2 – Stop using an aluminum bat for the pregame infield warm-ups.

#1 – Win 1 more game.

Scarborough Dragons

Head Coach: Adam Johnston

2012 Standing: N/A

# Of Years In OSBA: 1st

Defining Franchise Moment: Being the only OSBA franchise that is nicknamed after a mythological fire breathing creature.

Key Losses: N/A

Key Additions: N/A

Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: The Dragons come into the 2013 OSBA season as an expansion team but they are not your normal expansion team as they are rich in history and championships dating back to 1993.  Spending the last 10 years in SABL and winning the last 3 straight championships it was time for a change and a bigger challenge that the Dragons believe they can get from the OSBA teams.  The Dragons roster seems to have a well-balanced roster through a mixture of young arms and bats with the ever important veteran leadership.  It will be interesting to see how the team adapts to the change from aluminum bats they used in SABL to the wood bat game used in OSBA.  Because of this coach Adam Johnston will have to rely less on the power of his team’s bats and try to figure out how to win using more of his team speed and defense.  Some people refer to the 2013 edition of the Scarborough Dragons as the most talented squad to have put on the jersey in the team's 20 year history. One former OSBA player recently quoted "The Dragons team has that uncanny ability that when they smell blood they go in for the kill and it's not a matter of IF they will finish you off, it's more of WHEN will they decide to finish you off".  With that being said others argue that the youth of the team (average age being 25) will be the team's downfall as they will have to learn how to change their mindset of going from the hunted now to the hunter, which is a totally different approach to the game.

3 Team Goals For 2013:

#3 – Host a team fundraiser by selling its aluminum bats.

#2 – No ejections.

#1 – Have no runners picked off 1st base by a left-handed pitcher during day games when it’s warmer than 24 degrees Celsius.

Vaughan Expos

Head Coach: Jimmy Gonzalez

2012 Standing: 12-14-0 (7th in Western Conference)

# Of Years In OSBA: 4th

# Of Finals Appearances: 0

# Of Championships: 0

Twitter Handle: N/A

Defining Franchise Moment: Its awesome white uniforms.

Key Losses: N/A

Key Additions: N/A

Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: The Expos were playing consistent baseball, and sitting comfortable in a playoff spot, until some roster issues late in the year cost the team some points and all of the momentum they had going into the playoffs.  While not knowing of any significant additions or losses for the ’13 season, the Expos have always had a solid mix of pitching and hitting that allows them to be competitive week in and week out.

3 Team Goals For 2013:

#3 – Make sure that the team’s diamond supplier in Vaughan is kept very happy.

#2 – Sell out each home game that’s played at Christie Pitts.

#1 – Remember to declare the two-out catcher rule before each game.

Newmarket Express

Head Coach: Steve Zimmerman

Defining Franchise Moment: Winning the 2004 OSBA championship.

Key Losses: Jesse Nakayama, Brent Dufton, Alan Kung, Tim Coburn, Scott Gow, Marc Arsenault

Key Additions: Gbenga Ajasin (OF/P), Vazken Boyrazian (1B), Matt Butler (C/1B), Lloyd Crespi (2B/EH), Marty Patience (DH/1B).

Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: The Express’ strong offense carried them to a division title and 3rd place seed in the west in 2012.  The only team in the west with Saturday home games lost in the first round of the playoffs to the expansion Mets.  Through the offseason, the Newmarket Express have experienced its highest turnover in recent years, especially within the last month where 4 key players learned they are unable to play this season.  These losses will undoubtedly have an impact on this season's performance.  After losing the big bats of Scott Gow, Tim Coburn, and Alan Kung, and the steady play of Brent Dufton and Jesse Nakayama, the Express will be in tough to repeat their offensive domination from years past.  The only real good news the last month is the addition of Gbenga Ajasin, who will significantly boost the Express offense and will be an added arm on the mound as the #4 starter.  The return of Marty Patience is also a boost to the team and will give us some added depth.  As usual, the Express lack in pitching, with only John Bethune, Jesse Barker, Steve Zimmermann, and Gbenga Ajasin as starters, and Greg Whelan as the lone reliever, expect many innings from each pitcher as they try to share the workload.  With only 15 players on the roster, and Gregory Whelan moving the end of June, commitment is the greatest concern for Coach Zimmermann, who worries any hiccups in injuries or personnel could mean a week-to-week scramble for bodies.  Expect some better defense this year with Vazken Boyrazian and John Bethune solidifying the infield, and Steve Reiss and Gbenga Ajasin patrolling the friendly confines of the Fairgrounds outfield.  Chemistry is excellent this season, but will team Chemistry and better Defense be enough to balance out the lack of pitching and a less potent lineup?  The Express expect to make the playoffs in the 6-8 seed, but will more than likely be in tough against their 1st round opponent.

3 Team Goals For 2013:

#3 – Maintain spotlessly clean dugouts out all times.

#2 – Get its former coach, and legendary OSBA inspirational speaker, Brian Booth out to a game.

#1 – Field 9 guys every week, without having to put Mr. Chan in the outfield.

Forest Glen Giants

Defining Franchise Moment: Getting rid of the black pants after the ’07 season.

Key Losses: Mario Mainelli

Key Additions: Unknown

Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013:  Another offseason brought another long list of changes for the Giants.  Long time head coach, Alan Micolino, has retired; leaving the field duties to player coaches Rick Boutillier and Kevin Horton, with franchise owner Ron Smith still overseeing operations.  The Giants have also lost long time pitching ace Mario Mainelli, but the team’s new coaches have been recruiting diligently.  Expect another competitive Forest Glen team this summer.

3 Team Goals For 2013:

#3 – Memorize each other’s names by the end of May.

#2 – No forfeits.

#1 – Have a team social event.

Mississauga Majors

Defining Franchise Moment:  Assistant coach, Ryan McNeil’s, MLB player comparisons on the team website.

Key Losses: N/A

Key Additions: N/A

Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013:  The 2012 season was arguably the Majors best in its franchise’s OSBA history.  Elite pitching carried the team to a 2nd place finish in the western conference and a birth in the conference finals; which it would lose to York.  With an almost identical roster returning for the 2013 season, the Majors hope to take the next step, and reach the finals for the first time in franchise history.

3 Team Goals For 2013:

#3 – Make sure to have score sheets, lineup cards and the coaches contact list at all games.

#2 – Have at least one person named Pileggi at every game.

#1 – Win the western conference.

Metro Mets

Defining Franchise Moment: The retirement of the Rodrigues brothers.

Key Losses: David Clark, Nelson Rodrigues, Brian Rodrigues

Key Additions: Sean Difeo, Chris Hastings, Maiker Santana, Chris Novielli

Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: The Mets were a competitive team in its expansion year of 2012.  The team won the first playoff series that it ever played in, before getting knocked out by York in the 2ndround.  The 2013 Mets are looking forward to the challenge a new year will bring them. After last year’s second round loss to the diamonds, the Mets are looking for more offensive consistency this year; something that was considered its downfall in 2012. This group of Mets are a tight knit group of men who are quickly building team chemistry looking to do some damage this year in the western conference. They have lost a few key players but have added some very nice pieces to the team at the same time. The season cannot start soon enough for this group.

3 Team Goals For 2013:

#3 – Lead all OSBA teams in total Tweets.

#2 – Bring the loudest fans to the All-Star game...again.

#1 – Keep a close eye of for other teams not using the league required ‘ROML’ baseball.

Mississauga (905W) Orioles

Defining Franchise Moment: Changing its team name from the Milton Orioles to the Mississauga Orioles to the 905-West Orioles before ever playing a game in the OSBA.

Key Losses: N/A

Key Additions: N/A

Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013:  As an expansion team for the 2013 season, the Orioles were formed by a small group of players with past OSBA experience who joined forces with another group of players who participated in the OSBA tournament last fall.  Small tryouts were held to fill the remaining roster spots, and with the season start around the corner, the Orioles feel they have a club that is ready to compete in OSBA.  Returning to the league will be manager/player Peter Nicolaichuk, as well as Dan McGee, and Matt Smith.  Expectations are high coming into the season, and look for the team to try to get off to a strong start early in the season to build confidence.  Players to watch: Mike Shuryn, Sam Larson, Dominic Blago.

3 Team Goals For 2013:

#3 – Do not change its team name again until at least the next offseason.

#2 – Do not commit any 1st to 3rd balks.

#1 – Make the playoffs.

Mississauga North Tigers

Defining Franchise Moment: Getting into the free coffee and donuts at the league meeting, before the franchise was accepted.

Key Losses: N/A

Key Additions: N/A

Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: As the first expansion team to join the OSBA from the MBA junior loop in six years, the Tigers are by far the youngest team in the OSBA this year.  This group is the 3rd different team to assume the ‘Mississauga North Tigers’ name; and it hopes to have more success than the previous two.

3 Team Goals For 2013:

#3 – Sign up for a Twitter account.

#2 – Win more games than the ’08 Tigers.

#1 – Have at least 1 player drafted in the OSBA fantasy pool.

Mississauga Twins

Head Coach: Ken Woodford

2012 Standing: 9-17 (8th in Western Conference)

Defining Franchise Moment: Losing the longest game (17-innings) in OSBA history.

Key Losses: Graeme Ogilvie

Key Additions: N/A

Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013:  The 2012 Twins got off to the worst start in OSBA history, putting up a 1-13 1st half, before turning thing around with an 8-4 2nd half.  This offseason has been much quieter so far than the last for the Twins; when it traded the right to Tom Malyk to the Pickering Pirates for a 3-cycle washing machine.  The trade worked out for both clubs, as Malyk won an OSBA championship and the Twins suffered from zero leg infections in 2012.  With the season less than a week away from starting, the Twins are still working on finalizing its roster.

3 Team Goals For 2013:

#3 – Get win #2 before July.

#2 – Do not collectively consume 87 beers before a game.

#1 – Mix in a playoff win.

Vaughan Vikings

Head Coach: Morty Fergenbaum

Defining Franchise Moment: Winning the 2010 OSBA Fall Classic.

Key Losses: N/A

Key Additions: N/A

Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013:  The Vikings got off to a hot start in 2012, but struggled with a handful of injuries to its pitchers later in the season.  The team returns most of its key players for the ’13 season and fully expects to be one of the elite teams in the west again this summer.

3 Team Goals For 2013:

#3 – Make sure that all uniforms are accounted for at the beginning of each game.

#2 – Get Morty or Hersch into a game.

#1 – Stay healthy.

EASTERN CONFERENCE - PREVIEWS

<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->2012 OSBA Champions

PICKERING PIRATES

2012 Record: 16-9-1

Regular Season Standings: 3rd

Playoffs: Won the OSBA Championship

What does 5 less wins in a regular season get you? For some teams it is the difference between making the playoffs and being on the outside looking in. For the Pirates – their first-ever OSBA championship. A club that has been near or atop the conference standings for several years, Pickering started off sluggish but by mid-season kicked things into high gear and never let up until the final out of the playoffs.

Key Losses: N/A

Key Additions: Jared Kwart, Craig Megill, Marc Nolan, Darryl Noble

Players to watch for: Ryan D’Souza, Brad Binns, Will Mariani, Scott Gray, Sydney Saunders

2013 Outlook:The Pirates enter the 2013 season riding high off of their championship in 2012.  Avoiding a championship hangover and not becoming complacent will be important in their effort to repeat.  The Pirates will have the core team back again in 2014, so expect chemistry to remain strong.  However, they are not getting any younger and are slowly finding themselves amongst one of the older teams in the OSBA.  Avoiding injuries will be important down the stretch and, hence, managing the pitching staff will be important for head coach - Phil Lacombe.  In addition, look for the coaching staff to leverage strong defence, speed, and a balanced and creative offensive attack in 2013.

WHITBY CHIEFS

2012 Record: 17-6-3

Regular Season Finish: 1st

Playoffs: Lost to Pickering in Conference Finals

The Chiefs have become a model of consistency when looking at regular season performance and standing. They’ve also developed a pattern of bowing out in the conference finals – three years running. With several members returning, the Chiefs will also see some of the top players graduating from Whitby’s junior program join the team. Overall depth took a bit of a hit but this club still has a lot of solid pieces in place to remain competitive and compete for the right to represent the conference in the championship finals.

Key Losses: Mike Moorcroft, Adam Tedesco, Matt Kissel, Stephen Harrington

Key Additions: Jake Olynyk, Marc Stanoev, Kyle Smeelen, Tyler Mitchell, Mackenzie Clugston, Mike Del Fuoco

Players to watch for: Preston Wasmund, Tristan Beadle, Ryan Fleming, Dan Alayon, Graig Andrew

2013 Outlook: The veteran leadership lost in Moorcroft and Harrington cannot be put into words. With Harrington’s retirement that leaves just Graig Andrew as the final member of the inagural 2007 team. Tedesco and Kissel – two players who joined the club from junior were part of a young core this team has building around. Thankfully, all team members take pride in managing this club from a personnel perspective and once again chipped-in to find top-notch talent. Healthy pitching depth is a concern heading into opening weekend, but overall, the Chiefs should be a contender in the East.

 Port Hope Flyers

 2012 Record: 18-8-0

Regular Season Finish: 2nd

Playoffs: Lost to Pickering in Semi Finals

For a club that had mixed players’ reactions about joining the OSBA, the Flyers did extremely well in their first campaign. Finishing just one point behind Whitby in the overall conference standings, the Flyers finished 10 points higher that the now defunct Oshawa A’s – to capture their first division pennant. The Flyers have strong pitching, a balanced attack throughout their line-up and play well defensively – making them a contender once again this season.

Key Losses: Sandy Clark, Andrew Flay

Key Additions: Marc MacDonald, David Elliot, Joel Hallowell

Players to Watch For: Brett Jiggins, Robert McNab, Kyle Maloney, Brad Pickering, Cory Baker

The Flyers are hoping to repeat their success they had in their first season in the OSBA.  The Flyers have the majority of the team returning for their 2013 season with the additions of David Elliot, Joel Hallowell and former Flyer Marc MacDonald. Pitching should once again be a strength for the Flyers having Bobby Gilligan, Mike McNaught, Cory Baker and Owen Sharp in the rotation.  Flyers offensive will once again be counting on reigning MVP and Silver Slugger winner Brad Pickering, Robert McNab, Ryan Davis and Brett Jiggins.

<!--[endif]-->BROOKLIN DODGERS

2012 Record: 15-11-0

Regular Season Finish: 4th

Playoffs: Lost to Oshawa A’s in ¼ Finals

Brooklin had a nice bounce-back year after failing to make the play-offs in 2011. Led by a strong veteran core, the Dodgers added several players last year in an attempt to give the club some much needed depth. Some familiar faces re-join the club and with a little additional tinkering, Brooklin will once again field one of the more experienced teams in the conference.

Key Losses: Derek Grieve, Darryl Noble, Wayne Feltham, Todd Blair, Jeremy Majoros, John Wesley, Jason Graham, Jon McGillen, Ryan Corey, Mike Cappadocia

Key Additions: KWayne Wickens, Mike Weir, Dan Wilson, Greg Pomroy

Players to watch for: Dan Blea, Sam Grabowski, Mike Desputeaux, Lawrence Thomas, Jeff Canning

2013 Outlook: Despite the additions last year Brooklin has trimmed their roster which could create some issues given some of those members are playing on a part-time basis. This will certianly give other members an opportunity to step-up and carry larger workloads. The Dodgers have done a great job over the years minimzing turnover, but this past off-season appears to be an exception. Nevertheless, look for the Dodgers to be where they were last year – challenging for a top spot within the conference.

  Port Hope River Rats

2012 Record: 9-14-3

Regular Season Finish: 6th

Playoffs: Lost to Pickering in ¼ Finals

The River Rats meet and possibly exceeded expectations last summer. The ball club comprised of mostly Junior-aged players with a handful who had graduated did a solid job in their first season at Senior and within the OSBA. Wanting to be competitive, the club delivered. For their efforts, the River Rats were a mid-pack team by season’s end - good enough for 6th – which earned the club a play-off berth and an opportunity to gain post-season experience. While the club was swept by the eventual champions any anyone on the River Rats would tell you they were very pleased with how the season unfolded.

Key Losses: Marc Stanoev,

Key Additions: Ken Harmon

Players to Watch For: Kyle Dekesyer, Jordan Jeans, Nick Stone, Dawson Stone, Brandon Vaters

Outlook 2013: Building on where they left off, the River Rats should try to use their regular season standing as a bench-mark for improvement this summer. Adding a few more wins would be a great step in overall achievement. Plus, if successful, it should also position the club well in an effort to qualify for the play-offs.

OSHAWA TALONS

2012 Record: 9-15-2

Regular Season Finish: 7th

Playoffs: Lost to Port Hope Flyers in 1/4 Finals

The Talons played well enough to make it into the playoffs for the first time in three years. This club has always been competitive but has had challenges of being able to put together hot streaks for long stretches. Historically the team struggles out of the gate and picks it up in the second half. Some unforuntate injuries over the years have also depleted their depth putting management back to the drawing board every off-season. Things may be picking up for the Talons who have been able to acquire a big bat for the middle of their line-up which is something the Talons have needed for a few years.

Key Losses: None

Key Additions: Adam Dupont, Jorges Robles, Hiro Jingyi Su, Cody Leocata, Ryan Colburn, Chris Ricketts

Players to watch for:Steve Embrey, Anthony Cole, Chad Reid

2013 Outlook: Making the playoffs last season should be a huge moral boost for this club. Looking to build on that success, the Talons have upgraded their offence and defence in the offseason, and have strengthened the depth of their pitching staff.  Having lost many close games in 2012, it would not take much for the Talons to have a significantly improved record in 2013.

CLARINGTON CUBS

2012 Record:9-15-2

Regular Season Finish:8th

Playoffs: Lost to Whitby in Quarter Final

The Cubs failed to defend their league title and basically suffered from championship hangover all summer. Year over year their record was slightly worse despite qualifying for the playoffs as the 8th seed. In fairness, the Cubs lost some key offesnive players who also were very solid defensively as well. A strong core returns with some major FA acqusitions. The Cubs are the biggest benefactors in the folding of the Oshawa A’s. Mix in some former players returning and some good young talent coming up from Jr and this club leaps up considerably in overall talent and potential.

Key Losses: Dan Wilson, Brennan McNeely,

Key Additions: Mick Kurhan, Mark Dainty, Matt Tosoni, Thomas Fearon, Daniel Cooke, Todd Blair, Wayne Feltham, Brennen Conquer, Todd Van Laere, Colin Cockburn, Justin Recon, Shaun Hall, Rob Watson, Kyle Taylor, Mike Vance

Players to watch for: Mark Dainty, Mick Kurhan, Matt Tosoni, Todd Blair, Colin Cockburn

2013 Outlook: Heavily into fantasy sports, Head Coach/GM Chris Killoran must be all smiles when he sits down to figure out his line-up and pitching rotation. Easily the busiessiest GM in the off-season, the Cubs on paper are a pure juggernaut. Look for them to bust out of the gate this weekend.

Bowmanville Blue Jays

2012 Record: 9-16-1

Regular Season Finish: 9th

Playoffs: Failed to Qualify

A club that appeared to be folding in the off-season when coaches Mike Snider and Jamie Tessier both decided to retire did a great job of dodging some uncontrollable circumstances and re-building on the fly. Mark Salonius stepped in to become the new GM/Head Coach and immediately started working with the returning core to keep the team in operation. Formerly known as the Ajax Indians, the Blue Jays came about when team management found out their home park would be closed this season in preparation of the Pan Am games and had no choice but to relocate. So with change comes excitement and the Blue Jays are looking to push for a playoff spot this season.

Key Losses: Mike Snider, Jamie Tessier, Marc MacDonald, Chris Paelez, Ryan Gordon

Key Additions: Mark Salonius, Jeremy Majoros

Players to watch for: Luke Jenkins, Riley Whelan, Paul Evans, Joe Campa, Jeff Whittle

2013 Outlook: New name, new park, new uniforms, new management, new personnel, new team websie – all adds up to a lot of uncertainty when trying to predict just exactly how the Blue Jays will do this season. Similar to the situation of the Kendal Eagles, the Blue Jays simply need to erase thoughts of last season while drawing from experience. This club will obviously need time to gel and evaluate player performance on-field. They’ve been holding work-outs for a few months but the true test comes from strong competition across the conference. A solid effort with consistency should keep the team in the playoff picture and catch some teams off-guarad along the way.

 Kendal Eagles

2012 Record: 8-16-2

Regular Season Finish: 10th

Playoffs: Failed to Qualify

The 2012 season did not go as planned for the Eagles. Coming over from the EOBA with the two Port Hope teams, it was Kendal who failed to get off the ground and plummeted to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. A club with a lot of experience and veteran leadership, Kendal simply did not make the grade – finishing 8 games below .500 in 26 regular season games. With a long off-season the Eagles certainly have had time to let everything sink in. A club that wins games on pitching and defence, a better effort from start to finish will be required if this club wants to reach its goal of making the playoffs.

Key Losses: Chris Stark, Dave Drew

Key Additions: N/A

Players to Watch For: Nick Stacey, Bryan Landry, Phil Cammasulli, Tyson Gimblett, Russell Hunt

Outlook 2013: Looking for positives on a poor inaugural season, Kendal can enter the 2013 campaign knowing things can’t get much worse. Part of their struggles last season may have come from the fact in previous years there was nothing to play for with respect to playoffs and a league championship. Meaning, all the games were essentially for exhibition in preparation for Provincials. Look for the club to play with purpose this season.

Bowmanville Bandits

2012 Record: N/A

Regular Season Finish: N/A

Playoffs: N/A

If you build it, they will come. For the Bandits that was the case. Some hard work went into reaching out to just about anyone and everyone looking for a place to play and the effort paid off. GM/Head Coach Stephen Smith brings an expansion team to Bowmanville with modest expectations and a willingness to build a team from the ground up. After several indoor sessions the team was put together and will look to cut their teeth in what has become a very strong Eastern Conference.

Key Losses: None

Key Additions: N/A

Players to watch for: Mitchell Potok, Adam Hudson

2013 Outlook: The great thing about being a true expansion team is that there is no way of knowing what the team will accomplish. There is no need to place great expectations on the group and many teams will look past the Bandits on the schedule. If the Bandits can sneak in a few wins here and there they could have a shot at making the playoffs.

Peterborough Tigers

2012 Record: N/A

Regular Season Finish: N/A

Playoffs: N/A

Like the Port Hope River Rats last season, the Peterborough Tigers have elected to move their team to the senior ranks despite still having players at the junior age level. Wanting to be part of a group that offered strong competition the Tigers will add another young club full of promise and skill. If this club plays like the River Rats did last season they should have no problem being competitive and well within the playoff picture.

Key Losses: N/A

Key Additions: N/A

Players to watch for: Grant Elson, Cory Barker, Dan Burke, Brad Thompson, Kurtis Borland

2013 Outlook:  This club while an expansion franchise certainly knows how to keep the press out of their clubhouse. Not much to report on this Tigers aside from many of them having been together since Mosquito. Team chemistry will not be a problem for the Tigers and they’ll need that plus a strong work ethic should they hope to create some noise at the senior level. Experienced and a history of achievements behind them suggests the Tigers will be just fine and a contender for many years to come.

All-Star Game Showcases OSBA's Best

August 11, 2013

The OSBA All-Star Game at Rogers Centre was a well-played affair that ended in thrilling fashion, as Tristan Beadle provided a walk-off single to give the East a 6-5 victory over the West. The game was close the whole way through and featured some great defense, as well as some timely hitting.

Jordan Cleveland started for the East and yielded a run over his two innings of work. Sunny Sandhu's line drive single scored Eric Foley to give the West a 1-0 lead in the second. Foley was the starting pitcher for the West and pitched two shutout innings while striking out three. In the third, the West tacked on two more off Todd Van Laere to go up 3-0. Evan DePiero sparked the rally with a beautiful bunt single. Clint Jeon then hustled a base hit into a double, and Andy Ryder cashed both runners with a line drive single.

In the bottom of the third, the East got on the board against reliever John Bethune, as Bryan Landry singled and later scored as the back end of a double play throw that errantly went past first base. In the fourth the West made it 4-1 as Jeff Murphy walked, John Bethune singled, and Shawn Dunsmore ripped an RBI double. In the bottom of the inning, the East tallied three times to tie the game. Todd Blair walked and scored on a base hit by Tristan Beadle. Kyle Searle's double then plated Beadle, and Searle scored on a Bobby Gilligan base hit.

In the fifth, Luke Jenkins had a 1-2-3 inning and the East took the lead in the bottom of the frame as Matthew Laise allowed singles to Dan Joy and Steve Mitchell and the East pulled off a double steal to take the lead. Laise then pitched out of trouble to keep the score at 5-4 for the East. In the sixth, neither Rob Hehir nor Bobby Gilligan allowed a run, but the craziest moment of the game ensued after Gilligan hit leadoff batter Stuart Kingston on the forearm. The home plate umpire originally called it a foul ball. Kingston was in obvious pain and showed the ball mark to the umpire. It was determined that the ball did hit Kingston but on appeal, the first base umpire said that Kingston had swung at the ball. So Kingston stepped back in the box, and in obvious pain, proceeded to hit the next pitch down the left field line narrowly foul, as the ball crashed off the facing of the second deck. Kingston completed the at-bat by getting hit by a pitch for real. After the inning, Kingston went straight to the hospital where it was determined that he had a broken wrist, which will require surgery to repair. It was unbelievable that someone could hit a ball that far with a broken wrist.

In the seventh the West tied the game off of Darryl Noble as Sean Difeo was hit by a pitch and Jon Muia doubled, before Shawn Dunsmore's sacrifce fly. Noble was able to strand Muia at third and the game stayed tied at 5-5. In the bottom of the inning, Tim March cruised through it striking out two. In the eighth, Brad Binns allowed a single to Tim March but got out of the inning unscathed. The inning featured a great diving play by third baseman Craig Megill and a great running catch by catcher Kyle Searle. In the bottom of the eighth with the curfew approaching, March retired the first two batters, before Megill singled and went all the way to third on a wild pitch. Tristan Beadle then hit a sinking line drive to right that found its way to the turf to give the East a walkoff win.

The game was extremely well-played and featured two differing philosphies as the West used 24 players, with all of them getting to bat. The East used 18 players, with 7 players playing the entire game. Congratulations to the East and manager Romeo Persaud for avenging last year's defeat and for gaining home field in the Finals.

Year-End letter from the OSBA President

With the 2010 season now over, the OSBA will look to begin the next decade of baseball. Having started back in 2001 with just four teams, the association has developed into a very competitive program. When reflecting back on some of the greatest achievements over the past 10 seasons, it would be hard not to start with the current champion Burlington Bulls. In successfully defending their title, the Bulls become the first-ever to 3-peat. They also cemented their stake as the team of the decade – having won four championships in 5 trips to the championship finals in just 6 seasons within the association. They’ve also won the OSBA tournament more than any other team and from an individual stand-point have more than their fair share of perennial all-stars and award winners.

Two founding members - the Brooklin Dodgers and Mississauga Stars each have a pair of championships and both achieved their titles in back to back fashion. Before the surge of the Bulls, the Dodgers franchise was hand-down the benchmark for higher standards within those who competed for the coveted crown of champion.

The Richmond Hill Phoenix (another founding member) got their hands on the prize once as did the now defunct Bloor Jays – proving that not only winning a championship is hard but so is defending it.

Some teams have come and gone, same with individual players and coaches, but it is very gratifying to see some original members still in the program and putting up solid numbers year after year. Hopefully this trend can continue while the next generation of players start to leave their mark and cement their place in the history of this thriving association.

The OSBA started as a spot to continue baseball for anyone that had the skill and desire to play. 10 years later things are stronger than ever. The players, coaches, umpires, fans, sponsors and all the other volunteers from each city and town involved in the OSBA deserve a huge thank you for their dedication and support.

So here’s to the first 10 seasons and future seasons that will surely follow.

Thank you to all who make this program run, thrive and succeed.

Steve Smith

President, OSBA

Burlington Bulls 2010 OSBA CHAMPIONS

October 3, 2010
The BURLINGTON BULLS have now put themselves head and shoulders above the rest of the teams in OSBA. They have cemented their place in OSBA history by winning their 4th OSBA CHAMPIONSHIP and 3rd in a row. Two other teams have won 2 a piece and 2 others 1 a piece. No team has dominated the way the Bulls have since they joined OSBA in 2005, winning their first time out and then making the final 4 of the next 5 years, winning it 3 more times. Always the top, if not one of the top teams during the regular season, they have shown that they are just as dominant in the play-offs. This is the second time that the Bulls have defeated the Pirates in the final, both times the series went the full 5 games.

OSBA would like to congratulate the Burlington Bulls on their 2010 OSBA Championship.

2010 OSBA Awards to be announced

December 5, 2010
The Ontario Senior Baseball Association is happy to announce that starting Monday December 6th and then every second day thereafter, the 2010 Year-End Awards will be posted here. It took awhile to get all the votes in from the 16 coaches in OSBA but all the ballots were submitted and then tabulated. We will start off by announcing the Eastern Conference Gold Glove winners followed by the Western Conference Gold Glove winners on Wednesday. The rest of the awards will then follow every second day with the final award announced being the Conference MVP's.

Along with winners, we will also be posting the results of the other finalists. Vote and point totals will be posted for each of the winners including the finalists.

So be sure to check back often to see how your favorites OSBA players did in the voting and congratulations to all the winners and finalists. You are all very deserving of this honour.

2010 OSBA Championship Series - Previews

September 24, 2010

Burlington Bulls       vs.    Pickering Pirates

Regular Season Record & Final Standing:

Bulls:               19-9-0; 3rd in conference

Pirates:           17-9-2; 1st in conference

How They Got Here:

Bulls:          Defeated Mississauga Stars 2 games to 0 in Western Conference Finals

Pirates:      Defeated Whitby Chiefs 2 games to 1 in Eastern Conference Finals

Overview:

The Bulls return to the finals for a 3rd straight year and 5th overall in just 6 seasons within the OSBA. The back to back champions will also look to become the first-ever to 3-peat. If successful, they’ll also double the Brooklin Dodgers and Mississauga Stars with 4 OSBA Cups – adding to their accolades as the most successful franchise in the association’s 10 year history. The Pirates return to the finals after a one year absence. In 2008, Pickering took the bulls to a 5th and decisive game, but unfortunately for the Pirates, they came up short and handed the Bulls their 2nd championship.

Skinny:

Due to the number of teams within the association, the schedule did not see these two teams face one another this season during the regular season. During the ’08 finals games #1 and #4 went to extra innings with both teams each winning one in dramatic fashion. There were also two games decided by shutout and both were won by the Bulls – including game #5. This season the Bulls gave up an uncharacteristic 114 runs against whereas the Pirates held their opposition to just 78 runs in just 28 games. Offensively the Bulls put up 164 runs on the board whereas the Pirates score 122 times. Both teams are solid defensively and that should make for great baseball for the two most deserving teams this season.

Players to Watch For:

Bulls: P/IF Cam McKnight, OF Kip Keith, DH/IF Jason Hogan, IF Brad Guy, C Chris Lord

Pirates: IF Ryan D’Souza, P Will Mariani, OF/IF Jeff Murdoch, C Scott Grey, OF Sydney Saunders

How These Teams Stack Up:

Pitching: Offensively – edge to Burlington; Performance – edge to Burlington

Catching: Offensively – edge to Pickering; Defensively – edge to Burlington

1B: Offensively – edge to Pickering; Defensively – edge to Burlington

2B: Offensively – edge to Pickering; Defensively – edge to Pickering

3B: Offensively – edge to Burlington; Defensively – edge to Burlington

SS: Offensively – equal; Defensively – equal

OF: Offensively – edge to Pickering; Defensively – edge to Burlington

EH/DH: equal

Overall Bench: edge to Burlington

Overall Rotation: edge to Burlington

Coaching: edge to Burlington

X-Factor:

Composure

During the course of a season teams will experience set-backs, frustration – whether it be at the plate or in the field, and perhaps have some internal squabbles that put a slight dent in team morale. Come playoff time, losing needs to be minimized for prolonged success. If errors are made, teammates need to pick one another up and move on. If a bad call is made teams need to feed off of it rather than let it get to them too much. It is expected that adrenaline will be higher in this series than any other. For the Bulls, they have a lot at stake despite being the back to back defending champs. The Pirates too have something to prove and want to win their first championship. With strong compete-levels expected from both teams look for the club that can bounce back from errors the best to have an added advantage in this series.

EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS - PLAY-OFF PREVIEWS

September 15, 2010

Whitby Chiefs   vs.   Pickering Pirates

Regular Season Record & Final Standing:

Chiefs:         16-10-2; 2nd in conference

Pirates:         17-9-2; 1st in conference

How They Got Here:

Chiefs:         Defeated Brooklin Dodgers 2 games to 0 in semi finals

Pirates:         Defeated York Diamonds 2 games to 1 in semi finals

Overview:

The Whitby Chiefs enter the conference finals for the first time in their franchise history. After having being swept from round one their first two seasons and failing to advance last summer, the Chiefs take the next step in what can only be described as a slow, but steady playoff advancement. The Pirates on the other hand have to be feeling confident coming into this series. With home field advantage safely secured, the tops in the East this summer is just two wins away from making it back to the finals - a spot they aspire to reach once again after losing in a 5th and decisive game to the Bulls in 2008. They have some decent
playoff success to draw from and that has to be seen as a huge asset coming into this series.

Skinny:

Pickering walked away with 3 of 4 points when these two clubs met back in August. Neither club led the league offensively, but the Pirates did an excellent job keeping the opposition’s offense to a minimum. In 28 regular season games they surrendered only 78 runs against – good for an average of less than 3 runs per game. Whitby vastly improved defensively this year so look for this series to be a relatively low scoring one unless both teams get away from their very similar style of play.

Players to Watch for:

Chiefs:  OF Jason Andrews, C Jeff Kingdon, OF Graig Andrew, OF Dylon Flores, P Sohan Singh

Pirates:     OF/IF Jeff Murdoch, P Mike Robinson, OF/IF Jaymin Parmar, OF Sydney Saunders, IF Ryan D’Souza

X-Factor:

Coaching

Phil Lacombe is flying home to help ensure his team reaches the finals. This move will allow his players to focus more on playing and the task at hand. Both clubs have some depth and the team that best uses their bench and maximizes the efforts from their respective pitching staff should wind up with the best opportunity to represent the conference in the finals.

WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS - PLAY-OFF PREVIEWS

September 15, 2010

Burlington Bulls   vs.   Mississauga Stars

Regular Season Record & Final Standing:

Bulls:      19-9-0; 3rd in conference

Stars:      19-8-1; 1st in conference

How They Got Here:

Bulls:         Defeated Forest Glen 2 games to 1 in semis

Stars:         Defeated Mississauga North Bengals 2 games to 0 in semis

Overview:

The Bulls regular season record was the worst in franchise history. A mark of 19-9 would be a successful season by most clubs’ standards, but not for Burlington. After dropping game #1 to Forest Glen last Saturday, the defending champs responded to their wake up call and went on to dominate the final two games. The Stars made short-order of the Bengals on route to a sweep in their semi final match-up. Most impressive was the club’s ability to limit the Bengals to just five runs over both games. Offensively things looked to go well for the Stars as well – putting up 18 runs in the series.

Skinny:

These divisional rivals met four times during the regular season and it was the Stars who came away with the edge. Winning 3 of 4 and outscoring the Bulls 18-14 suggests all of these games were close. In fact, the largest run differential was 3 runs and that outcome occurred three times. The Bulls are looking to advance to the finals for an opportunity to capture their 4th OSBA Cup while the Stars have designs on trying to capture their 3rd and first since 2002.

Players to Watch For:

Bulls: P/IF Cam McKnight, P/OF Jon Leyland, OF Kip Keith, DH/IF Jason Hogan, IF Brad Guy

Stars: P/IF Johnny DeWolfe, IF Jeff Cornish, IF Gregg Cullen, P/IF Steve Gallant, OF Alex Perez

X-Factor:

Defence

The Bulls are as solid as they come when looking at the starting 8 working with the pitcher on the mound. A given is that the club seldom makes errors that cost them runs. Simply putting the ball in play probably will not be enough for the Stars. They’ll need to find some gaps and hope for some bounces to go their way. While the Stars match up relatively well, they do not appear to be as deep as in previous years. Nevertheless, they have enough skill to get the job done and that will be tested this weekend.

EASTERN CONFERENCE - 2010 PLAY-OFF PREVIEWS

York Diamonds   vs.   Pickering Pirates

Regular Season Record & Final Standing:

Diamonds: 13-13-2; 5th in conference

Pirates: 17-9-2; 1st in conference

Overview:

The York Diamonds won their one game playoff last night over the Ajax Indians and now draw the top seed in the conference as they look to continue their successful inaugural campaign within the OSBA. The veteran ball club bounces back on less than two days of rest to host game #1. The Pirates had another very strong regular season and thanks to the efforts of the Eastern All-Star team could have home field advantage throughout the playoffs should they advance to the finals after missing out last season.

Skinny:

These clubs faced one another four times during the regular season with the pirates taking three of the four games. Of note, the largest run differential was just four runs and that happened just once. All other games were very close in score indicating these two teams match-up to one another relatively well.

Players to Watch for:

Diamonds:  P Steven Szoldra, OF/P Brett Burns, OF Steve Foley, P Eric Foley, OF Hayden Griffin

Pirates: OF Sydney Saunders, OF Matt D’Souza, P Will Mariani, P Dave McElroy, IF Scott Grey

X-Factor:

Pitching Depth

With the Diamonds needing to win last night it came at the cost of throwing ace Eric Foley. Chances are he won’t get the ball in game #1 which leaves the club exposed a little behind either their #2 or #3 starters. Pickering added to their already solid rotation this past off-season and also have Dave McElroy’s full-time services for the first all year. Given the past results between these teams both clubs have options, but the team that dominates from the mound will advance.

Brooklin Dodgers   vs.   Whitby Chiefs

Regular Season Record & Final Standing:

Dodgers:  14-13-1; 3rd in conference

Chiefs:  16-10-2; 2nd in conference*

(* division winners are ranked 1-2 regardless of point totals)

Overview:

The Dodgers dropped three of four to the Chiefs this summer and in large part was the reason why the club finished second in their division. None of the games were blowouts, and all were decided by four runs or less. The Dodgers enter this post season with two OSBA championships to their credit and are the defending conference champions. The Chiefs who continue to build their club slowly by way of achievements once again improved on their standing from a year ago. Having been knocked out of the playoffs twice in three years at the hands of the Dodgers, the Chiefs will need to catch some breaks to buck that trend.

Skinny:

Both teams qualified larger rosters this year (Brooklin 19, Whitby 24). The Dodgers should have most, if not all hands on deck for this series. The Chiefs will be without some players who have returned to school. In each of the four games during the regular season both teams were missing key players. With both clubs adding new personnel during the off-season and/or during the summer, it could quite easily be some of the new blood that helps to decide the series.

 Players to Watch For:

Dodgers:  SS/P Mitch Dunn, DH Mike Weir, OF Mike Desputeaux, P/OF Jon McGillen, P Jeff Canning

Chiefs:  OF Graig Andrew, 3B/OF Paul Ovsonka, P Steve Harrington, C/IF Jeff Kingdon, P Adam Groome

X- Factor:

Playoff Experience:

The Dodgers have more than most and certainly hold the edge over the Chiefs. Year after year, many who follow the OSBA playoffs write-off the Dodgers and the club often proves otherwise. They simply capitalize on their opposition’s error and seldom make many of their own. They put bat on ball in most key situations, and if all that holds true in this series they’ll once again move a step closer for another championship title.

WESTERN CONFERENCE - PLAY-OFF PREVIEWS

Mississauga North Bengals   vs.   Mississauga Stars

Regular Season Record & Final Standing:

Bengals:  12-16-0; 5th in conference

Stars:   19-8-1; 1st in conference

Overview:

The Mississauga North Bengals won a close 2-1 ball game last night over the Vaughan Vikings and for their effort advance to the Western Conference semi finals. The club will be on just a few days rest when action resumes this Saturday. Next in line for the team that finished 5th in overall standings – the top seeded Mississauga Stars. The Stars beat out the defending champion Burlington Bulls for tops in their division on route to 1st overall in the conference and will hold home field advantage for this round and next if they can knock off the Bengals.

Skinny:

Being in the same division these clubs met four times during the regular season. The Stars took three of four in some very high-scoring contests. In all, 73 runs were put on the board for an average of just over 18 per game. Chances are this series will be played much tighter with both clubs knowing it has been a while since either team has reached the championship finals.

Players to Watch For:

Bengals: SS/P Jonathan Amendola, C/OF Andrew Costley, 1B/C Nick Scarcelli, OF Cody Ireland,  P Dexter Chu

Stars: P/3B Steve Gallant, P/IF Johnny DeWolfe, IF Gregg Cullen, P Matt Belbeck, P Allen Penney

X-Factor:

Pitching:

Given the number of runs these two teams have scored in their four games leading up to this series, both teams will need some excellent pitching to counter the offensive ability. Given the Bengals will be somewhat disadvantaged they may need to rely more on a by committee approach, but whoever gets the best performances should win the series.

Burlington Bulls   vs.   Forest Glen Giants

Regular Season Record & Final Standing:

Bulls: 19-9-0; 3rd in conference

Giants: 15-10-3; 2nd in conference*

(* division winners are ranked 1-2 regardless of point totals)

Overview:

The Burlington Bulls enter the playoffs as back to back champs in search of the association’s first-ever three-peat. Their route to the cup became a little more difficult when they failed to secure tops in their division. They’ll enter this series as the visiting team in the best of three and face the club they met in last year’s conference finals. The Forest Glen Giants did not have a run-away campaign like last year. In fact, although they played well enough to win their division there were times this summer when the club showed a lot of inconsistency in their play. However, the playoffs represent a new season of sorts and an opportunity to put it all together. They’ll need a complete effort if they have designs on getting past the champs and into the conference finals.

Skinny:

There is no hiding the fact these two teams want to beat one another. As mentioned previously, the Bulls knocked the Giants out of the playoffs last fall and that bad blood carried over to this season. To their credit, the Giants exacted a little revenge by sweeping their series - giving the Bulls their most lop-sided defeat - being out-scored 21-6 in the two games. Expect to see a lot of intensity in this series starting with the two coaching staffs which will undoubtedly filter into what goes on between the white lines.

Players to Watch For:

Bulls:  OF Kip Keith, SS/P Cam McKnight, C Chris Lord, DH Jason Hogan, P/IF Jamie Kozak

Giants:  OF Steve Correia, 1B Rick Boutilier, IF Graham McGee, IF Denis Hucal, P Mario Mainelli

X-Factor:

Bullpen:

Given both teams have players that participate in other leagues; the starting pitching could be a little less fresh than some of the other series going on this weekend. Should any of the projected starters falter, the coaching staffs may need to make some quick hooks and go to the pen. Given Forest Glen’s proven ability on the attack against the Bulls this year, and the defending champs’ knack at winning when it matters most, look for the team that gets the best all around pitching to be the last club standing in this affair.

OSBA Play-offs - Western Conference 4th vs. 5th game

September 7, 2010
Mississauga North Bengals vs. Vaughan Vikings

        12-16-0                        15-12-1

Overview:

The expansion Vikings qualify for the post season and fall just short of the Forest Glen Giants for tops in the division. Finishing just two points behind for second spot sees the Vikings slip to 4th in the conference and in a one game winner take all game with the Bengals. This season wasn’t exactly a stellar one for the Bengals, who qualify for the playoffs as the only team to have a record below .500. The club clinched the final playoff spot during the last week season and got some help by virtue of other teams within striking distance failing to win down the stretch.

Skinny:

Despite being separated by 7 points in the standings, these two clubs split their series this year. Vaughan holds a slight edge when you look at runs for/runs against, and a solid 4-2 record to close out the season. The Bengals who struggled finished the year at 2-4 and will undoubtedly be the club that plays with a little more desperation in their game.

Players to Watch for:

BengalsP Dexter Chu, IF Nick Scarcelli, OF Cody Ireland, IF Garrett Nicol, IF Dean Mariani

VikingsP Daniel Pelley, OF Brandon Bolarinho, IF Jon Muia, IF Patrick Festa, OF Lane Gold

X-Factor:

Roster Uncertainties:

Given how young the Vikings are – coming to the OSBA after graduating from the junior ranks, it would be easy to assume September could be this club’s biggest obstacle on the year. A few or several players could be off to school depleting the team’s overall depth. In addition, fresh off their competing in the OBA “C” Provincial Championships this past weekend, the Vikings could be a little short on available hurlers. The Bengals added several new faces and made a managerial change over the course of the off-season. Perhaps their standing was reflective in part to all those changes made and a side effect was a longer than expected gelling process. Nonetheless, both teams enter this series knowing they’ll need a supreme effort from all involved or the season will come to an abrupt end.

OSBA Play-offs - Eastern Conference 4th vs. 5th game

September 7, 2010

York Diamonds   vs.     Ajax Indians

                                                                                     13-13-2                     13-13-2

 Overview:

The Ajax Indians played much better down the stretch - picking up several victories and giving the club an opportunity to once again do some damage in the post season. With a record of 5-3 in August, the Indians made up enough ground to not only qualify but secured home field advantage for this one game against the Diamonds – albeit by tie break. The Diamonds who took OSBA by storm – going 6-1 during their first 7 games in the OSBA struggled at times and saw a hefty lead in the division standings dissipate before their eyes. If not for a couple of key wins in the final weeks the Diamonds would have missed the post season in their inaugural season.

Skinny:

These division rivals met four times during the regular season and split both times. The Indians had the best runs for/against with 24-16 and won one of the games via shutout. They also won the last game of the series (and season) in a route – winning easily 13-3. Given that both teams have had equal rest and the opportunity to see one another quite a bit through divisional play, there probably are not many surprises left to uncover. Both teams will send their respective ace to the mound in an effort to advance and face the conference winners (and divisional counterparts) the Pickering Pirates.

Players to Watch for:

DiamondsOF Steve Foley, P Eric Foley, OF Hayden Griffin, IF Manny Rodriquez, OF Brett Burns

IndiansP Chris Theodoru, C/P Mike Snider, IF Jimmy Sgourakis, IF Jamie Tessier, IF Donnie Burke

X-Factor:

Coaching:

The game within the game could very well come into play if one or both of the projected starters falter. Given the importance of this game, the coaches may be faced with difficult decisions and turning to their benches – knowing short leashes must be used in a single game that leaves very little room for error. So whether it is dipping into the bullpen, pinch hitting or calling for a substitution with a runner in scoring position, the team that gets the most from their supporting staff could very easily walk away with the victory and an opportunity to play this weekend.

Presidents Challenge for Week #14

August 28, 2010
Well here we are in the final week of the season and the final week of the Presidents Challenge.

Things have slowly changed the past few weeks and we now have Steve Smith in the lead and it doesn't look good for Rodney Holinaty to make a comeback. With a total of 12 series to be decided (7 regular series and 5 make-up series) you would think it is possible for Rodney to make-up the 3 game difference, however the two Presidents have only beat their competitor once each by 3 wins on a single weekend. Maybe this will be Rodneys lucky weekend or maybe it will be the weekend that Steve lays the hammer down and puts an exclamation on his triumph.

OSBA - POWER RANKINGS - Week #14

#1 - BURLINGTON BULLS

The Bulls regain top spot in the rankings after sweeping Whitby last Saturday. Looking ahead to the club’s triple header against the Expos – it should be relatively safe to assume the Bulls will make good on this opportunity to pick up 6 points. If they do, they’ll set themselves up nicely heading into their final two games against the Stars. First in the division and tops in the conference is still a race to the finish line, but it looks like the Bulls have things stacked in their favour to come out on top when all the dust settles.

#2 - PICKERING PIRATES

Pickering swept the Newmarket Express last weekend and in doing so accomplished two things: 1) they drastically hurt the Express’ chance of making the playoffs and 2) clinched the Eastern Conference – securing home field advantage each round should they make it back to the finals. The Pirates wrap-up their regular season this weekend completing a home and home series with the Express. The big question in this series is will the Pirates rest some veteran players knowing their playoff positioned is locked or will they look to deliver the knock-out punch to the Express?

#3 - MISSISSAUGA STARS

After having their series against the Bulls washed away last weekend, the Stars travelled to Christie Pitts Wednesday to make up two games versus the Expos. With a prime opportunity to add four points the Stars let two get away – leaving with a split. This weekend they travel to Q-Park to take on the Bengals. The Stars need a sweep to ensure they are within striking distance of the Bulls going into their final two games against one another. The Bengals need a sweep to try and hold on to the 5th and final playoff spot. This series should be a good one.

#4 - WHITBY CHIEFS

After a very bad weekend – dropping two to the Bulls Saturday and splitting with the Cubs on Sunday, Whitby managed to win a big game over Brooklin Wednesday night. With the win the Chiefs move three points up on the Dodgers and put themselves in a more relaxing situation this weekend. The Chiefs need 1 point against the Talons to clinch the division while 5 teams below them could all tie for third if a bunch of scenarios all panned out. Now sitting at 2-4 for the month of August, the Chiefs have an opportunity to salvage a bad month with a pair of wins and capture their first divisional pennant.

#5 - FOREST GLEN GIANTS

Currently sitting tied with the Vikings for top seed within their division the giants have a couple of games in hand. After being rained out last weekend Forest Glen will get back to business this weekend when they travel to the Valleys to take on the Majors. The Giants basically need 5 of 8 points to lock down their division. Look for the club to have most of their players out this weekend - in an effort to push for that very important top two conference seeding scenario.

#6 - VAUGHAN VIKINGS

The Vikings have done very well this season making things interesting. Inconsistent results have this team four point out of a playoff spot then a mini winning streak has them right back in the thick of things. Having played 26 of 28 games they have just two games left and need a sweep this weekend over the Twins to put added pressure on Forest Glen. The Vikings close out the regular season at home against the Twins. Vaughan will need their “A’ game this weekend because if they get swept they’ll most likely finish 4th and have to play in the one game playoff prior to the best of series that start on the September 11/12 weekend.

#7 - BROOKLIN DODGERS

Brooklin made things very interesting last weekend sweeping the Talons. They took care of their own business and when this time of year comes around that’s all a club should be focusing on. The loss to Whitby on Wednesday has the Dodgers currently sitting in 3rd overall in the conference but just 2 points out of 7th. The Eastern Conference playoff picture will become much clearer after this weekend. The Dodgers host a very desperate Cubs squad in what should be a very spirited affair. The Dodgers have one of the best OSBA records when it comes to performing in the clutch. Will they do it again or drop completely out of the playoff race? They need a split to ensure a play-off berth.

#8 - AJAX INDIANS

A huge sweep over the Vikings last weekend in Vaughan put the Tribe right back in the thick of things heading into the final weekend of play. With a Diamonds win last night they pulled to a tie with Ajax. And as luck would have it for both clubs – they face one another this weekend. With so many possible outcomes impacting the playoff race this series easily conclude in a split. Give the Indians a slight edge here with York playing Thursday and starting their ace in a must win game. The Indians have made it to the Conference finals the past two years – look for them to dig deep pushing for the opportunity once again.

#9 - YORK DIAMONDS

York pulled off a big win over the Majors last night in a must win game for the expansion club. They travel to Ajax to wrap-up their inaugural regular season this Sunday. A sweep puts them in the best position but having thrown Eric Foley last night it is unknown whether or not he will be able to bounce back and have an impact on this series. A split would make things interesting, but could still give the Diamonds an opportunity to qualify for the 4th vs. 5th seed game – depending on the outcome of the Pirates/Express and Dodgers/Cubs match-ups. York will need to dig deep but this veteran club has shown flashes of dominance this year and knows what it takes to win big games.

#10 - CLARINGTON CUBS

The Cubs round out the top 10 in the rankings after battling back in game #2 against Whitby to salvage a split.  With a record of 5-1 and their past 6 games, the Cubs are on the cusp of qualifying for the play-offs but in their way is the two time OSBA champion Brooklin Dodgers. Simply put the Cubs need to sweep Brooklin for the best chance at making the playoffs. Not exactly an easy task at any time and especially when the Dodgers still have an outside chance at winning the division. Nonetheless head coach Chris Killoran will have his troops fired-up in what should be a very intense series.

#11 - NEWMARKET EXPRESS

After being swept by the conference leading Pickering Pirates last weekend the Express may have hit a brick wall at the worst time. They face the Pirates again this Saturday at home. Newmarket more or less needs a sweep for any realistic shot at the playoffs. This club has hung in the playoff race all season and regardless of the end result – they will have done very well given their off-season restructuring. The Express don’t want to hear about silver lining clichés. They want a post season berth and will fight until the last out has been recorded.

#12 - MISSISSAUGA NORTH BENGALS

The Bengals had their series against the Expos called off due to rain last weekend and now have to face the Stars in a situation where both teams need the points for much different reasons. The Bengals better add an element of desperation to their game if they have any designs on pulling off a sweep. The race from a Bengals perspective (right now anyway) is for the final playoff spot and they have three clubs nipping at their heels. A solid effort will be needed just to earn a sweep. The Bengals will need to turn it up a notch to maximize their point output this weekend.

#13 - MISSISSAUGA SOUTHWEST TWINS

Rained pushed back a big series with the Giants last weekend so now the Twins get the other club in their division sitting above them in the standings when they travel to Vaughan to tangle with the Vikings. Like most teams in the bottom half of the standings need a sweep to improve their playoff chances. Currently 2 points behind the Bengals for the 5th and final playoff spot the Twins will need to take care of their own games while looking to the Stars for some added assistance.

#14 - MISSISSAUGA MAJORS

A loss to York last night prevented the Majors from pulling even with the Bengals for 5th in the conference. They now find themselves in a bit of a hole given they host the Giants this weekend. Not incapable of pulling off a split or even a series sweep, but the Majors will need to re-group somewhat and pay greater attention all aspects of their game. Given the team has given up just 80 runs this season 12 of those runs against were against York last night. The Majors will need to play solid baseball for 14 innings if they wish to leave with some points this weekend. A better all around effort will be needed the rest of the way if the club hopes to get into the post season.

#15 - OSHAWA TALONS

Any thought of making the post season quickly evaporated last weekend when they were mathematically eliminated at the hands of the Dodgers. They dropped a close one to the Expos last night and now close out the season this weekend in Whitby. The Talons still have an opportunity to play the role of spoiler though with the Chiefs needing a point to clinch the division. With the Talons sweeping the previous series between these two teams there is reason to believe they could do it again.

#16 - VAUGHAN EXPOS

Maybe the Expos should lobby to play their entire season in August next year. With 8 games to play heading into Wednesday of this week Vaughan split with the Stars on Wednesday, beat Oshawa last night and now play three on Saturday in Burlington against the bulls. All this and they still need to complete their schedule with two make-up games against the Bengals. Give this expansion team some credit for not packing things in knowing full-well the playoffs have been out of reach for some time now.

Presidents Challenge for Week #13

Two weeks to go in the Presidents Challenge and the two presidents are just one game a part, with three games pending for make-up games, on top of the remaining schedule.

It has been decided what the reward will be for the winner. OSBA - POWER RANKINGS - Week #13

#1 - MISSISSAUGA STARS

The Stars managed to retain top spot in the rankings after coming away with a split last weekend. In doing so they also prevented the Bengals from gaining any ground within their division. This weekend marks a huge match-up as they host the Bulls. The Stars who have played well as of late might catch a bit of a break too with Burlington playing a make-up series with Whitby the day before. First place within the division and first overall could be up for grabs this weekend in what should be a great series.

#2 - BURLINGTON BULLS

Despite having dropped 4 of their last 5 games, the Bulls are nowhere near out of the race for their division and first overall in the West. With four games in two days the defending champs will be able to silence all with a strong showing and accumulation of some big points. A make-up with the Chiefs and then the Stars could easily have Burlington back in the driver’s seat. If anyone has the pitching depth to handle this overwhelming challenge – it’s the Bulls!

#3 - PICKERING PIRATES

After a weekend off the Pirates find themselves first overall in the East with four games left on the schedule. They wrap-up the season with a home and home against the Newmarket Express in what should be a golden opportunity for Pickering to nail-down their division and play spoiler at the same time. The Pirates have been rock-solid when it comes to keeping their opposition from putting up large scores. They’ll need to come out strong with weekend knowing the Express are fighting for their preverbal playoff lives.

#4 - FOREST GLEN GIANTS

A split with the Indians last weekend was enough to retain tops in the division. However, the Vikings won a make-up game this week over the Expos to pull even with the Giants. This weekend they host the Twins in a very big series for both clubs. Forest Glen needs to make a statement Sunday and come away with a sweep. The race for the top four spots in the conference is so tight. Losing the division lead could see the Giants slip all the way to fourth and into the one game winner take all match-up prior to the opening round of the playoffs.

#5 - VAUGHAN VIKINGS

It looks like the Vikings are heating up at the right time of the year. With a record of 6-0 over their past 6 games they are now deadlocked atop their division with the Giants and in the heart of the playoff race.  With a pair of games at home this weekend they’ll try to do what Forest Glen couldn’t last weekend – pulling off a sweep of the Indians. With just four games left the Vikings need to keep their momentum going as they try to qualify for the post season in their inaugural OSBA campaign.

#6 - WHITBY CHIEFS

The Chiefs appear to be running on the fumes of a strong July. Now 0-2-1 in August their lead in the division is just 3 points over both Brooklin and Clarington. They also don’t catch a break this weekend travelling to Burlington on Saturday and then trying to find enough pitching to remain competitive against the surging Cubs – in what will be a huge series for both teams. Should Whitby squander away their two games in hand (against the Bulls) they could be in a tough the rest of the way.

#7 - BROOKLIN DODGERS

Brooklin made good on game #1 of their series last weekend against Whitby. With a convincing 5-1 final the Dodgers narrowed the gap in the East and managed to keep pace with the Cubs. Game #2 was called due to lightening and will be made up next week. For now, the Dodgers can do themselves a favour with a strong effort against the Talons. A sweep is basically needed if the Dodgers hope to keep in the running for a playoff spot and possibly a chance at a division pennant. Look for Brooklin to learn from their last series against Oshawa – where they let a golden opportunity of 4 points slip away.

#8 - NEWMARKET EXPRESS

Like the little train that could, the Express might just have enough coal in the boiler to make the playoffs despite their huge off-season reconstruction. Currently sitting in second within their division and holding on to 3rd overall in the conference, Newmarket holds their own destiny with two big series against the front-running Pickering Pirates. Knowing what is behind them Newmarket must try for at least splits this weekend and next. If they can manage that or better they should reap the rewards of a post season berth. Anything less and they may just fall short on what has all the makings of a Cinderella-like season.

#9 - CLARINGTON CUBS

After simply pounding on the Talons last weekend the Cubs are now in a perfect position to qualify for the post season for the first time in 3 years. With some added firepower down the stretch the Cubs have picked up 8 wins in their last 10 games. This weekend they travel to Whitby to avenge an earlier series sweep and continue their push for the playoffs. Clarington could get some considerable help should the Bulls sweep Whitby on Saturday and the Talons can fulfill their role as spoiler against Brooklin on Sunday.

#10 - YORK DIAMONDS

A 1-4-1 record over their last 6 has put the Diamonds on a free-fall within the Power Rankings. However, despite a very bad record of late York is still very much in the playoff race. Having lost on Thursday night to the Majors, the Diamonds will wait until next Thursday to complete their series and get back into action.  They currently sit 4th overall in the conference heading into this weekend’s action and hope for some help from a few of the other teams as they too would like to qualify for the playoffs in their inaugural season.

#11 - AJAX INDIANS

A split against the Giants helped keep Ajax close to the pack but they’ll need to sweep a series or two if they hope to put them in the best position to secure a playoff berth. With so much divisional or conference play going on the rest of the way, the Indians find themselves in an interlock series this weekend against the Vikings. Depending on the outcomes of the rest of the games being played this weekend, a sweep over the Vikings could see Ajax gain ground on several teams.

#12 - MISSISSAUGA NORTH BENGALS

Now two wins away from a .500 record the Bengals are holding onto to the fifth and final playoff spot. The Twins and Majors are right behind them and with all the teams ahead in the standings 5 points or more, the Bengals really need to focus on who is in the rear view mirror more so that who is currently ahead. The best way to ensure they maintain their playoff position is just going out and taking care of business. They get the Expos at home and that should give them a very good chance to put up four very big points.

#13 - MISSISSAUGA SOUTHWEST TWINS

Being swept by Newmarket last weekend could not have come at a worse time for the Twins. With just four games left they are only two points out of the final playoff spot but in a three-way race where only one team can prevail. A big divisional series with the Giants could easily determine whether or not the Twins have what it takes to make the post season. Look for the club to put forth a strong effort – knowing how much is at stake this Sunday.

#14 - MISSISSAUGA MAJORS

A convincing win over the Diamonds on Thursday pulled the Majors into a tie with the Twins and two points behind the 5th seeded Bengals. Having their series with York spread over a two week span, the Majors will be out of action this weekend. No doubt they’ll be scoreboard watching and rooting for the Expos (over the Bengals) and Forest Glen (over the Twins). They get back to action next Thursday to wrap-up things with the Diamonds.

#15 - OSHAWA TALONS

Unfortunately for Oshawa it looks like a trip to the post season is not in the cards again this year. However, the Talons could make things interesting by sweeping Brooklin and creating even more of a log-jam in the 3-5 playoffs spots. When these two clubs last faced one another the final result was a split. Look for Oshawa to play hard and finish the end of the year on a positive note.

#16 - VAUGHAN EXPOS

Having lost the battle of Vaughan last weekend to the Vikings, the Expos now look to salvage a sub-par season to date. With 8 games still left on their schedule the Expos will try to play a month’s worth of games in about two weeks. With very little hope of qualifying for the post season the Expos need to try and play spoiler to the best of their ability.

OSBA - POWER RANKINGS - Week #12

#1 - MISSISSAUGA STARS

Well it finally happened. The Bulls have been knocked out of the top spot in the Power Rankings. The Stars swept Burlington last weekend to take a 3 point lead in their division – with the Bulls holding one game in hand. The Stars also sit atop the Western Conference standings although things appear to be tightening up just a little in that race as well. This weekend they have another big divisional series when they host the surging Mississauga North Bengals.

#2 - BURLINGTON BULLS

After being swept in back to back weeks the Bulls drop from the #1 spot in the rankings – a position they have held since the start of the season. Probably more important to highlight is how tight the race for tops overall in the West has become. And with the division winners being ranked 1-2 the Bulls (for the moment anyway) have slipped to 3rd in the conference.  The defending champs travel to the Valleys this weekend where they’ll be looking to get back into the win column.

#3 - PICKERING PIRATES

The Pirates had a huge week. First they took a single game against the Diamonds in a key match-up for first in their division. Then they beat up on the Chiefs on Sunday to take 3 of 4 points which opened a larger lead for first overall in the Eastern Conference. Then last night they finished off their series with the Diamonds winning 4-2. The Pirates currently hold a 4 point lead over the Chiefs for tops in the East and will sit idle this weekend.

#4 - YORK DIAMONDS

While the past 7 days were very good to the Pirates, the Diamonds were nowhere near as lucky. They dropped a very big game to the Pickering last Thursday then got swept by the Cubs. Their loss last night put them 6 points behind the Pirates and back down to a .500 record. With just four games left on their schedule it looks like the Diamonds will need to win 3 of 4 just to have a good shot at finishing in the top three and avoiding the dreaded 1 game playoff between the 4 and 5 seeds. York is also idle this weekend.

#5 - FOREST GLEN GIANTS

Forest Glen is starting to shows signs of picking up their game. Over their last 10 the Giants have gone 5-3-2 picking up points in 7 of those games. A sweep of the Majors last weekend followed by a loss to the Vikings on Tuesday leaves the Giants in first place within their division but by just two points over the Vikings.  They’ll travel to Ajax this Sunday to face the Indians – who are in desperate need of wins as they look to jump back into the playoff picture.

#6 - WHITBY CHIEFS

After a bit of a lay-off the Chiefs simply looked flat in a series they should have been up for. After getting blown out of game #1 they showed some life and came away with a tie in the second game. This weekend they host the Dodgers. If Whitby sweeps, they’ll clinch their division and make life difficult for the Dodgers. If they don’t, chances are things in the East will continue to be very interesting for the duration of the August schedule.

#7 - BROOKLIN DODGERS

Brooklin gained a point on the Chiefs by coming away with a split against the Talons last Sunday. This week they travel to Whitby for a big series against the Chiefs. Looking to atone for the sweep a few weeks back, look for the Dodgers to play some inspired baseball. With Clarington, Newmarket and Ajax all very much in the playoff picture, the Dodgers cannot afford to leave the park this weekend without some points.

#8 - VAUGHAN VIKINGS

Finally starting to put some wins together with some consistency, the Vikings have a modest little winning streak of 4 games and have quickly jumped back into the race for tops in their division. With a sweep over the Giants and the Twins in a span of a week, Vaughan now sits just two points behind the Giants. They should be able to run their unbeaten streak to 6 this weekend when they face the Expos as the visiting team in the battle of Vaughan.

#9 - NEWMARKET EXPRESS

While they were unable to sweep their division rivals last weekend, the Express did manage a split with Ajax. In doing so, they maintained their one point lead over the Indians, managed to keep pace with the Dodgers, and gained some ground on the Diamonds - all and all a pretty decent week. Sitting at 3-3 over their past 6 games, the Express will need to play .500 baseball (or better) the rest of the way. They host the Twins on Saturday in what should be a well-played series for both teams.

#10 - MISSISSAUGA NORTH BENGALS

Having won 4 of their last 5 games the Bengals have done a very solid job as of late. Over their last 6 games the ball club has gone 4-2 and in the process gained some much needed ground on the conference front-runners. They still have their work cut out for them. Chances of winning the division are slim to none, so focusing on making the playoffs needs to be the goal. They face the division-leading Stars in what should be considered a huge series for the Bengals.

#11 - MISSISSAUGA SOUTHWEST TWINS

After a mini 3 game winning streak the Twins start August on the wrong side of the win column – dropping a pair of games to the Vikings. The Twins will need to pick up where they concluded league play in July if they have any design on making the playoffs. Travelling to Newmarket this weekend should present an opportunity for points. Provided the club can get some sold pitching they should be able to at least manage a split against a team that really has not put a lot of runs across the board offensively this season.

#12 - AJAX INDIANS

Similar to the explanation of how Newmarket made the most out of a split last weekend, Ajax too faired ok thanks to others providing some help. Sitting just one point out of 4th place, the Indians can put a lot of pressure on several clubs with a sweep this weekend over the Giants. With a 3-3 record over their past 6, Ajax is another club that will need to play better than .500 for the duration of August. If any team of late has shown all you need is a playoff spot to make some noise, it’s this club.

#13 - CLARINGTON CUBS

While no one is planning a championship parade for the Cubbies just yet, they have been playing very well as of late – going 6-2 over their last 8 games. The Cubs will need to take care of their own business this weekend when they travel to Oshawa. The Cubs will also be scoreboard watching hoping the Twins, Giants and Chiefs can help them as well. Regardless, the race in the East is very wide open and the Cubs more or less hold their own fate with nothing but divisional games left in their schedule.

#14 - MISSISSAUGA MAJORS

Just when things looked to be going well for the Majors they hit the skids and have dropped 4 of their last 5 games. Sinking all the way into the cellar of their division, the Majors need some points badly. Normally when you see Burlington come up on your calendar you wouldn’t think points could be had. However, perhaps they are getting the Bulls at the right time. Coming away with a split in this series would be a huge boost for the Majors and that’s what they should be trying to accomplish this weekend.

#15 - OSHAWA TALONS

Playing better baseball than a year ago at this time should be encouraging for a Talons ball club that is on the verge of failing to make the playoffs for a second straight year. July wasn’t a good month for Oshawa and getting off to a 1-1 record in August has to be seen as a positive. One would think Oshawa could relish the role of spoiler, but should they sweep the Cubs this weekend they’d actually be right back in the playoff picture. Provided they can get some top-notch pitching they should be able to at least leave this series with a split.

#16 - VAUGHAN EXPOS

With a record of 2-4 in their last 6 games the Expos have yet to climb to double digit points in the standings. A split with the Bengals shows that this club has some talent. It also shows that this team is not throwing in the towel – serving as the Western Conference spoiler. They have a golden opportunity to be the thorn in the Vikings side when they host this weekend.

East beats West for only second time

August 8, 2010
The Eastern Conference came out on top in the 2010 OSBA All-Star Game at the Rogers Centre by a score of 9-3. In the 6th OSBA All-Star game and 5th at the Rogers Centre the Eastern All-Stars were able to get their second victory in the OSBA All-Star Game, though the Western Conference still holds a 4-2 edge.

The East got on the board in the first inning with 2 runs and then followed that up with another 3 in the 5th, after the West had notched a run in the bottom of the 1st. The East never looked back after that as they added runs in 5th & 6th, with a final 2 in the 8th. The Western Conference would add single runs in the 4th and the 9th.

The Eastern Conference would have the 2 MVP's of the game. Pitching MVP was Mike Rochon of the Newmarket Express who pitched a 1-2-3 3rd inning with 2 K's and picked up the win. The Offensive MVP was Steve Foley of the York Diamonds. Steve went 3-3 with 3 runs, 5 RBI's, 1 BB and a SB.

The win gives the Eastern Conference representative in the OSBA finals, home field advantage.

Rosters are comprimised of one player selection from each team in the conference made by their own coach. As well, each team submits a list of 5 nominees that the All-Star managers make their additional picks from. Once Mike and Rodney receive the team pick plus the nominees, they then pick one additional player from each team, which brings the roster up to 16 players. The remaining 9 picks can come from any team and are at the discretion of the All-Star managers. If a player that is chosen by his team or the All-Star manager, informs them that they cannot take part, the All-Star manager may fill the opened spot with a player from any team, not just the team of the player not taking part.

OSBA POWER RANKINGS - WEEK #10

#1 - BURLINGTON BULLS

The Bulls got swept last week at the hands of the Giants. While Forest Glen gained some ground in the overall Western Conference standings, the Bulls retained their three point lead on the Stars and will look to bounce back this weekend. Unfortunately for the last place Expos they host a Bulls team that will be out to exact some revenge for last week’s result.

#2 - PICKERING PIRATES

The Pirates jump one spot in the rankings this week after continuing their steady play and coming away with a split with the Diamonds last Sunday. Pickering’s last 6 games have generated a 3-3 record, and while that’s a decent clip the club will need to play better than .500 in August should they have designs on winning both their division and first overall in the conference. They get a chance to take over sole possession of first in the East this weekend when they host the Twins.

#3 - YORK DIAMONDS

The Diamonds picked up 3 of a possible 6 points last week after tying the Giants last Thursday. Ironically enough, both teams played to another 3-3 draw last night. With the point, the Diamonds move into first place within their division and sit atop of the Eastern Conference but will now sit idle this weekend. York will now sit back and await Pickering’s results this weekend to see which team will hold the coveted first place seeding heading into the final month of regular season action.

#4 - MISSISSAUGA STARS

Some inconsistent play of late has the Stars dropping from #2 in the rankings this week. Knowing the Giants swept the Bulls heading into their games against Whitby, the Stars failed to pull closer to the Bulls. Last year this club had some rough patches that saw them drop in the standings as well. Going 2-3-1 over their last 6 games should be a reason for concern. They look to turn things around this weekend when they travel to Vaughan to face the Vikings.

#5 - FOREST GLEN GIANTS

Forest Glen pulled off a sweep of the defending champs last weekend and gained ground on the Bulls and Stars in the process – with respect to tops in the conference. With the majority of their roster in attendance for their series with Burlington, the Giants gave a glimpse of what this team could accomplish if they could see some consistency from their members. Last night was a case of same story, same result. Missing some key players the Giants did manage a tie and gained another point for their effort. The Giants now sit idle for a couple of weeks and will get back into action after the Civic holiday.

#6 - WHITBY CHIEFS

The Chiefs stay parked in 6th spot this week after Forest Glen was given the nod for the top five after their accomplishment against Burlington and picking up a point last night against York. The Chiefs grabbed four points against the Stars last weekend to break away from the Dodgers for tops in their division. And while the club also holds two games in hand over Brooklin none of that matters this weekend. Whitby travels to Oshawa to face the Dodgers in what should be a very well-played series.

#7 - BROOKLIN DODGERS

Brooklin failed to sweep the visiting Indians last weekend and that cost them a couple of spots in the rankings and a tie of first place in their division. Fittingly, the Dodgers who hover around the .500 mark slip a little this week to mid-pack in the rankings. With the new playoff format the Dodgers cannot afford to sit back like in years past. Everyone knows they are gunning for the division pennant and they’ll be out to prove it this weekend when they host the Chiefs.

#8 - AJAX INDIANS

Ajax had to have come out of their series with Brooklin feeling pretty good about the end result. Anytime you play well against a perennial OSBA Cup contender it should be grounds for a boost in confidence. A split kept Ajax right in the thick of the playoff mix heading into this weekend. Should they get some great pitching, the Indians should do well against the Majors who come into town this Saturday.

#9 - MISSISSAUGA SOUTHWEST TWINS

The Twins probably would have liked to come away with a sweep over the Expos but with the top two teams in the conference both being swept they did manage to gain a little ground. With a record of 3-3 over their past 6 games, the Twins are picking up points virtually every weekend. Their efforts see them up one spot this week in the rankings, but they’ll need a solid effort in Pickering if they hope to continue that trend.

#10 - VAUGHAN VIKINGS

The Vikings round out this week’s top 10 thanks in large part to their sweep over the Newmarket Express. Like the Twins, the Vikings are starting to pick up points on a more consistent basis. However, this young club needs to play with more consistency as the last two playoffs spots have several teams in the hunt.  With a visiting Stars team having dropped 3 of their last 4, the Vikings best be ready for a club that comes into town with some added desperation in their game.

#11 - NEWMARKET EXPRESS

You win some, you lose some. For Newmarket, a .500 record was the goal for this season. However, with the ball club being right there when it comes to challenging for a playoff spot one would think the stretch goal of making the playoffs would be enough inspiration to dig deep and find a way to win a few extra games here and there. Having dropped 4 of their last 6 games the Express host a surging Cubs team with this match-up carrying some big playoff implications for both clubs.

#12 - CLARINGTON CUBS

The Cubs jump three spots this week after sweeping the Talons last Sunday. With the four points the Cubs jump out of the division cellar and are on the cusp of that last playoff spot. For a team that has taken a few steps back in recent years a playoff berth would big a huge boost for this club. They hold their own destiny the rest of the way – starting with two games in Newmarket this weekend.

#13 - MISSISSAUGA MAJORS

Playing better baseball of late, the Majors are starting to pick up some much needed points. Last weekend was a very close series with the Bengals. On the losing side of a 1-0 contest the Majors left with a split. This weekend they travel to Ajax to take on the Indians. Neither club is tearing the league up with runs for and both have solid runs against stats so watch for this series to be very close and most likely one with few runs scored.

#14 - MISSISSAUGA NORTH BENGALS

A very close series last weekend against the Majors could have gone either way in both games. The Bengals need to put everything together to make a push in both these rankings and more importantly, the Western Conference standings. This weekend they host another club in a very similar situation in the Oshawa Talons. Having just been swept at the hands of the Cubs, Oshawa should be prepared to make this a tough series.

#15 - OSHAWA TALONS

With a 1-4-1 record over the past 6 games the Talons have dropped all the way to the bottom of their conference standings. On the wrong end of a sweep last weekend against the Cubs, the Talons take to the road to face the inconsistent play of the Bengals. Sitting just three points out of the final playoff spot should be enough motivation for this club to come away with at least a split this weekend in Mississauga.

#16 - VAUGHAN EXPOS

With a split against the Twins last weekend the Expos managed to pick up their first win in their last 6 games. While the playoffs are probably too far out of reach for this season, the Expos could have a lot of fun playing the role of spoiler, and who knows, catching fire could get them right back into that playoff mix. Too bad the Bulls are their opposition this weekend. Chances are the Expos will have to wait a couple more weeks before trying to get back into the win column.

Mr. Holinaty's picks:

OSBA POWER RANKINGS - WEEK #9

#1 - BURLINGTON BULLS

The Bulls get back to action after participating in a tournament in Ottawa last weekend. Originally the club planned to play four games on Saturday, but were unable to secure a field for the morning make-up games with the Chiefs. They’ll host a struggling Giants team in a re-match of last year’s Western Finals. Look for the Bulls to prove they are a model of consistency and give the Giants two tough games.

#2 - MISSISSAUGA STARS

The Stars hold #2 spot but the next two clubs below are nipping at their heels. Edge goes to the Stars for having the best record over the past three weeks of action. Last weekend’s split with the Dodgers was no surprise. Both clubs are having solid seasons to date. This weekend the Stars travel to Whitby to face the Chiefs.  A strong effort should keep them within striking distance of the Bulls and perhaps gaining some ground if the Stars can get some help from the Giants.

#3 - PICKERING PIRATES

The Pirates retain their top three ranking having put up a split with the Talons last weekend. However, a new week and a new challenge for the Pirates. They face the York Diamonds in what will now be a battle for first in their division. Over the past two weeks York has been busy making up their rained-out dates. With a tie in a game with Forest Glen last night they now sit tied with Pickering although the Pirates hold one game in hand.  This should be a very well played series with some big stakes on the line.

#4 - YORK DIAMONDS

With a flurry of games within the past two weeks the Diamond have not only caught up to other clubs in games played, they’ve also caught the front-running Pirates in their division. With a record of 3-2-1 over the past 6 games and participation in the OSBA tournament, the Diamonds have played a lot of baseball in July. And with a game last night, York heads into Pickering with little rest. Nonetheless and as stated above there, there is a lot on the line this weekend. Look for this veteran club to manage at least a split this weekend.

#5 - BROOKLIN DODGERS

Brooklin rounds out the top five in this week’s rankings although they could have been higher. With a subpar 2-3-1 record over their past 6 games, the Dodgers failed to put some distance between themselves and what has quickly become a much tighter division – with all four clubs now just 6 points apart. This weekend the Dodgers host the Indians in what should be a very good series and like the Bulls/Giants a re-match of last year’s conference finals. Look for the Dodgers to draw upon their success of last year against Ajax and push for a sweep this weekend.

#6 - WHITBY CHIEFS

The Chiefs jump one spot this week thanks to a sweep over the Expos last weekend. Whitby took advantage of an Expos squad that clearly was more interested in the World Cup last weekend.  This weekend they get a much tougher challenge in a very solid Stars ball club. The Chiefs will need to start seeing better numbers out to their games down the stretch if they have any hope of catching Brooklin and keeping ahead of the other clubs fighting for a playoff spot.

#7 - FOREST GLEN GIANTS

Forest Glen came away last night with a point having tied the Diamonds in a single game contest. They currently hold a two point lead over the Twins and also have a game in hand. This weekend will prove as the ultimate test within their regular season schedule as the face the Bulls. The Giants could easily make a series out of these games by having most of their players. Chances are that won’t happen putting the Giants in tougher than they should be against the league’s best.

#8 - NEWMARKET EXPRESS

The Express continue to roll along hovering around that evasive .500 mark. A split with the Diamonds last week keeps them right there with the rest of their division and in the middle of the pack when looking at the entire conference.  This weekend they host the young Vikings team who appear to be battling some inconsistency in their game. If the Express can find a way to minimize errors they could very easily come away with a sweep. If not, they could just as easily be swept. Both clubs need points. Look for this one to be a close series.

#9 - AJAX INDIANS

If being swept by the Cubs was not bad enough, how about the potential loss of P/1B Chris Theodoru for an extended period of time? A very hard hit comebacker to the mound was taken off the leg by Theodoru. If anyone has seen the growing bruise on his Facebook page you can see just how bad it has become. The Tribe will try to right the ship this weekend against the Dodgers at Kinsmen Stadium but now down a quality starter will make things harder on Ajax to come away with a sweep.

#10 - MISSISSAUGA SOUTHWEST TWINS

The Twins jump a couple of spots and nail down the final top 10 seeding this week. A split with the Diamonds last weekend helped maintain a second place standing in their division. Over their past 6 games the Twins are respectable 3-3 but appear to be having some trouble putting up runs across the board – ranked last in their division. Hosting the struggling Expos could be the break needed to get the bats going. Knowing the Giants have their hands full with the Bulls, a golden opportunity awaits the Twins if they can manage a sweep over Vaughan.

#11 - OSHAWA TALONS

The Talons slip below the top 10 in the rankings but still produced a solid result against the Pirates last weekend. Coming away with a split leaves the club just four points out of first place in the division. Oshawa has been playing better baseball of late and while their surge in the standings isn’t eye-popping, they are right in the middle of things challenging for a playoff spot. With a very heavy focus on conference and divisional play in the second half of the season every club holds their own fate. Case in point – they have a series with the Cubs this weekend in Clarington. Both clubs should be hungry for points so look for some added intensity from both sides in this series.

#12 - MISSISSAUGA MAJORS

While the standings page on the league website appears to be a little out of whack it should not deter anything away from the Majors play of late. Having been near the bottom of the standings and these rankings all season the Majors are finally showing some signs of life. A sweep over the Vikings saw the Majors hop out of the basement and right into the middle of the playoff picture. They travel to Q-Park this weekend to face the Bengals. Both teams appear to be playing better ball of late so this one comes down to who wants the wins more.

#13 - MISSISSAUGA NORTH BENGALS

Aside from the Expos who appear out of the playoff picture everything has tightened up in the West. The Bengals know they can play better than their current 6-10 record and they’ll need to do so this weekend against the Majors. Inconsistent play by the Bengals has been an on-going concern. They’ll need to tighten things up down the stretch just to make the playoffs. A strong showing this weekend would not only be a boost in their confidence but also put a little distance on one of the clubs also looking to make the post season.

#14 - VAUGHAN VIKINGS

Despite a very good 4-2 record over their past 6 games, the Vikings cannot be feeling too good about being swept by the Majors last weekend. They let a struggling team jump over them in the standings and right into the middle of the playoff race. Nonetheless, the Vikings like all other clubs cannot be looking for other teams to give them any help. The best way for this club to ensure they make the playoffs in their inaugural season is to simply go out and take care of business themselves. This weekend they travel to Newmarket to face the Express. A strong effort could easily see them come away with a sweep. Anything less could see them lose even more ground on the clubs currently ahead in the standings.

#15 - CLARINGTON CUBS

With some added work and confidence gained from the players who participated in the OSBA tournament, the Cubs took four very huge points from the Indians last week. Quietly the Cubs have been adding players to their roster and week after week they are seeing some good results. While it doesn’t always equate to points this Cubs ball club is within striking distance when it comes to making the playoffs. They have a very big series with Oshawa this weekend.  If Clarington pulls off another sweep they’ll leap over Oshawa into third and could very easily gain even more ground on Whitby and Brooklin.

#16 - VAUGHAN EXPOS

Some extended World Cup celebrations by many on the roster hurt the club last weekend in game #1 against Whitby. The team rebounded nicely and almost won game #2 in a well played back and forth affair. The Expos are the only team in OSBA yet to reach double digits in points. And while they do have a decent enough squad to compete they simply are not catching any breaks. They’ll need to start putting things together if they have any hope of challenging for a playoff spot. Luckily for the Expos many teams above them are not on pace for record seasons so they are still in it from that perspective. If they get some solid pitching they could see some results against the Twins this weekend.

OSBA - POWER RANKINGS - Week #7

Previous weeks ranking in parenthesis.

1. BURLINGTON BULLS (1)

It is hard to imagine the Bulls dropping from the top of the rankings. They are first overall and have a decent lead over the Stars for tops in their division (and conference) despite splitting with the Vikings last weekend. Weather permitting the Bulls will play three games this weekend with a make-up with Cubs and two with Whitby. Look for the Bulls to win all three and keep rolling atop the standings.

2. MISSISSAUGA STARS (2)

With a split last weekend with the Cubs, the Stars failed to gain ground on the Bulls. They still have three games in hand on the division leaders but will need a strong effort this weekend to prevent any points from slipping away. The Stars travel to Vaughan to play the Expos who have already played one game this week in a make-up with Talons and dropped that game by a 7-0 decision.

3. PICKERING PIRATES (4)

The Pirates keep climbing the rankings and are starting to take aim on first in the conference. Strong play of late sees Pickering on a 5 game unbeaten streak. Capturing 3 of 4 points against the Majors last weekend puts the club 5 points up on the Diamonds (who hold 3 games in hand), but with a record of 8-1-1 in their last 10 there is no doubt this club is on a roll. Next up for the Pirates is a trip to Ritson Field to take on the Brooklin Dodgers.

4. YORK DIAMONDS (3)

The Diamonds may want to think about changing their name to Power Raingers with the number of games they’ve had to re-schedule. Their game with the Express got rained out on Thursday and they host Brooklin for one of their make-up games on Saturday then travel to Vaughan for a set with the Vikings on Sunday. With a decent result this weekend the Diamonds can put some heat on the front-running Pirates.

5. BROOKLIN DODGERS (5)

Don’t look now but the Dodgers have taken over first in their division – holding a game in hand on Whitby. Taking three of four points from Newmarket combined with the Chiefs being swept by the Talons has the defending Eastern Conference Champs in a great spot coming into this weekend. Despite the challenge of three games in two days the Dodgers could make a huge impact on the conference standings if they can find a way to win all three games this weekend.

6. FOREST GLEN GIANTS (9)

The Giants picked up just their second sweep of the season defeating the Expos last weekend. For their effort the Giants sit atop their division with two games in hand over the second place Twins. This club’s inconsistent play will be tested this weekend when the scrappy Express roll into town. A sweep of Newmarket would have the Giants moving in the right direction as the second half of the season approaches.

7. WHITBY CHIEFS (6)

The Talons took it to the Chiefs last weekend and really embarrassed the club pounding out 15 hits in the second game. After a decent unbeaten streak, the Chiefs have dropped their last three games and have seen their lead over the Dodgers evaporate. Things don’t get any easier travelling to Burlington on Saturday to face the Bulls. Look for Whitby to drop both games and continue to spiral in the standings and rankings.

8. AJAX INDIANS (8)

The Indians retain their spot in the rankings despite sitting idle last weekend. They are currently tied for 3rd in their division and remain in the thick of things for a playoff spot within the conference. This weekend they host the Talons. With Oshawa coming on as of late these games really mean a lot for both teams. Look for a good series from both teams full of playoff-like intensity. A sweep by Ajax would ensure they come into next week no lower than 3rd and could move within just two points of Pickering.

9. NEWMARKET EXPRESS (7)

In a nostalgic night last Saturday – one that saw VP-East Brian Booth throw out the first pitch to OSBA founder Rod Holinaty and a group photo of all players and coaches from both teams who have been in OSBA since inception – wasn’t enough to lift the Express over the Dodgers. In fact, the Express only took one of four points. Newmarket needs to find some consistency in their play so it is fitting they travel to Mississauga to play the Giants in a series featuring two clubs looking to bust out.

10. OSHAWA TALONS (16)

So there must be something to the bottom spot in the rankings and waking teams up. The Talons busted-out in a big way against Whitby last weekend. They finally got a lot of offense on a weekend where their pitching wasn’t necessarily at its best but strong enough to get the job done. Add a shutout over the Expos this week and the Talons are now challenging for tops in their division. Their trip to Ajax holds playoff implications and a sweep by the Talons would help that cause.

11. VAUGHAN VIKINGS (10)

The end result of last weekend’s split with the Bulls would be considered by most a strong showing against the league’s best. However, The Vikings could have easily come away with a sweep had it not been for some sloppy play. Then again, they could have just as easily been swept too after coughing up the lead in game # 2 only to mount a comeback of their own to secure the win. Coach Morty dropped the “Fergenbaum” on his team and we’ll have to wait and see if the message sunk in with his troops. They host the Diamonds club this Sunday.

12. MISSISSAUGA SOUTHWEST TWINS (12)

The Twins snapped a 3 game losing streak with a pair of wins over the Bengals last weekend. Based on their results the past Two weeks the Twins appear to be playing solid baseball and showing some consistency. For their efforts last weekend the Twins find themselves in second place within their division even though they have played two games more than the 3rd place Vikings. They have a golden opportunity to add some additional points to their total as they host the struggling Majors on Sunday.

13. CLARINGTON CUBS (13)

The Cubs gained some ground in their division with a split with the Stars. Surprising, staff ace Steve Butterworth didn’t pick up the win. In fact, it seems the Cubs cannot yet find their game when Butterworth is on the mound. They hope to buck that trend when they travel to Burlington for a make-up game on Saturday and/or when they host the floundering Bengals on Sunday. With Oshawa having picked up their game of late,  the Cubs will need to do the same or the chance at a playoff spot will slip away.

14. MISSISSAUGA NORTH BENGALS (11)

The Bengals cannot seem to find a way to hold a lead and come away with a win. They let an opportunity slip away last weekend against the Twins and have found themselves in similar situations far too often this season. Perhaps a road trip to Clarington will result in a different result. The Bengals need to get things going. With about a half a season left it will become much harder to start watching the scoreboard looking for help and trying to leap over a few clubs to get into a favourable playoff position.

15. MISSISSAUGA MAJORS (15)

The Majors played well enough last Sunday to possibly come away with a better result. Nevertheless, to hold a strong Pickering team to just three runs in two games is something to be proud of. However, getting just one point each weekend will quickly bury a team in the standings. The Majors travel to 9th Line North to tangle with the Twins this weekend. The Majors need a split (or better) as they try to narrow the gap on teams ahead of them in the standings.

16. VAUGHAN EXPOS (14)

With just one game in hand on the Bengals, the Expos sit a point out of third place in their division. Having dropped their last three decisions the Expos cannot afford to get swept this weekend. Unfortunately they face a very solid club in the Mississauga Stars. The Expos will need to start getting points from the better teams if they envision qualifying for the post season. Perhaps slipping back into the cellar of the Power Rankings will give them a little added motivation.

Presidents Challenge for Week #6

Well here it is Week #6 of the OSBA season and we have the former President Rod Holinaty, with a slight lead over OSBAs current President Steve Smith, in their weekly challenge of picking the series winners. However Steve does have one series pending in hand.

Rod Holinaty 9-20 (5 series pending results due to rainouts)
Steve Smith 8-19 (6 series pending results due to rainouts)

Week #6 Picks

Mr. Steve Smith:

Dodgers vs. Express – Split
Cubs vs. Stars – Stars sweep
Pickering vs. Majors – Pirates sweep
Expos vs. Giants – Giants sweep
Bengals vs. Twins – Split
Bulls vs. Vikings – Bulls sweep

Mr. Rod Holinaty:

Chiefs vs. Talons – Split
Cubs vs. Stars – Split
Pickering vs. Majors – Pirates sweep
Expos vs. Giants – Giants sweep
Bengals vs. Twins – Twins sweep
Bulls vs. Vikings – Split

OSBA - POWER RANKINGS - Week #6

After a week hiatus the Power Rankings are back, enjoy!

#1. BURLINGTON BULLS

After two convincing wins over the Bengals last weekend the Bulls become the first team to reach 20 points in the standings. The scary part, this isn’t even their best start to a season – when compared to previous years. This weekend Burlington travels to Vaughan to face the expansion Vikings who have begun to shows signs of improvement. Look for the Bulls to try and make a statement this weekend - showing the new kids what it will take to beat the best.

#2. MISSISSAUGA STARS

The Stars kept pace with the Bulls sweeping the Twins last Sunday. Even though the games were close you have to give the Stars full credit – posting shutouts in both games. So while the offense appears to be sputtering a little the club’s pitching and defence appears to be in mid-season form. Clarington rolls in this weekend and should provide solid competition. This series will be the second of the original four match-ups this weekend. The other will occur on Saturday when the Express host the Dodgers.

#3. YORK DIAMONDS

York played three games last week taking the first of two weeknight games from Ajax and splitting last Sunday with Oshawa. The Diamonds have played fewer games that the rest of their division but currently sit two points out of first with a game in hand. They played last night and blew a chance to put pressure on Pickering – losing 5-0 to the Indians. They have to wait until next Thursday now to push towards tops in their division.

#4. PICKERING PIRATES

Pickering jumps one spot after a combination of their sweep over Ajax and Newmarket’s split with Whitby. Sitting atop of the division standings is familiar territory for this club and they should remain there if they play to potential this weekend. The Pirates travel to Mississauga to play a struggling Majors ball club. Look for the Pirates to rack up some runs as they try to open some distance on the other three teams in their division. Anything other than a sweep this weekend would have to be looked at as a missed golden opportunity.

#5. BROOKLIN DODGERS

The Dodgers move up one spot this week mainly because of the Express and their fall in the rankings. After getting swept by the Bulls two weeks back, the Dodgers got out their own brooms - taking both games against the Cubs in a big divisional match-up last Sunday. With all the rookies looking like solid contributors, the Dodgers continue to keep pace with the front-running Chiefs and have all the tools to push for a second consecutive sweep this weekend. Look for Rod Holinaty to load up on pictures during this original four match-up.

#6. WHITBY CHIEFS

The Chiefs were able to run their unbeaten streak to 7 games before the Express took the second game of their double header last weekend. The Chiefs continue to get great pitching performances from their staff but appear to be struggling offensively. That might actually favour the Talons this weekend who are known for their strong pitching. Look for this series to be a low scoring affair – unless one or both teams decide this is the weekend to bust-out and put up some big numbers.

#7. NEWMARKET EXPRESS

The Express slid three spots after being swept by Ajax two weeks ago and coming out of Whitby with a split last Sunday. Next up for the Express, the Brooklin Dodgers come into Newmarket for an original four match-up. These two teams have a long-standing rivalry that should continue and result in two well-played games. The Express will need to rely on their bigger bats showing up if they want to slug it out with the Brooklin club who is currently hitting .331 on the season.

#8. AJAX INDIANS

The Tribe jumped two spots thanks to their efforts – sweeping the Express two weeks ago and lacklustre performances from teams below them in the rankings. Last Thursday the Indians lost a single game to York and salvaged a split in the series winning by shutout last night. With the win, Ajax leaps over the Express in the standings heading into this weekend. Ajax now sits idle and will get back into action next Saturday when they host the Oshawa Talons.

#9. FOREST GLEN GIANTS

The Giants only managed to grab one of four points against the expansion Vikings last weekend. That result was costly because the Vikings now share top spot in the division. After 8 games played the Giants are sitting below .500. They look to steer the ship in the opposite direction this weekend as they host the Vaughan Expos. However, the Giants should not take this expansion team lightly. After a sweep of the Majors last weekend the Expos have climbed right into the thick of things when you look at all the clubs currently fighting for the last three playoff spots.

#10. VAUGHAN VIKINGS

The Vikings were on a bit of a roll having put together a modest four game unbeaten streak before losing the second game in their make-up double header against the Bengals on Tuesday. Taking three of four points from the Giants last Sunday was huge for this expansion team. They pulled even with the Forest Glen in points and have another series against them to make up. However, with the back to back champs rolling into Vaughan this weekend the Vikings will need to be at their best and even then may have to wait a week before trying to claim top spot in their division.

#11. MISSISSAUGA NORTH BENGALS

The Bengals appear headed in the wrong direction. Missing a couple of key vets doesn’t help but this club has some good talent. Sitting at four games below .500 is not where this club wants to be. Luckily, aside from the Bulls and Stars everyone else is clustered together in the standings. The Bengals need to get on a role. They face the Twins this weekend who are also hungry for some wins. It should be a good series.

#12. MISSISSUAGA SOUTHWEST TWINS

Last weekend must have been a heart-breaker for the Twins. They gave up just three runs over two games and came away with nothing to show for their effort. On a positive note, Tom Malyk looks to have no signs of rust after a brief retirement. However, the Twins will need to turn things around offensively in hope of winning some games. Perhaps a date with the struggling Bengals will help get their bats going. With a couple of wins the Twins would move up in the standings and rankings.

#13. CLARINGTON CUBS

Being swept last weekend by the Dodgers put the Cubs further down the rankings. Their 0-4 record in divisional play does not help their standing either. While the Cubs should keep their chins up for being in on most games things certainly do not get any easier this weekend when they travel to Mississauga to face the red-hot Stars. Despite their record to date, the Cubs just need to be on the other side of a one run decision. From there it may just be the confidence builder needed to turn things around.

#14. VAUGHAN EXPOS

Don’t look now but the Expos are on a winning streak. Ok, it might only be two games but for an expansion franchise struggling to make their mark the Expos need to build off any success they can generate. With a sweep over the Majors the Expos jump two spots in the rankings. Vaughan will look to keep things rolling when they visit the Giants Sunday in Mississauga. And with the Giants struggling, Vaughan has an opportunity to keep the streak going and make a jump in the overall Western Conference standings.

#15. MISSISSAUGA MAJORS

The Majors failed to move themselves up in the standings last week dropping a pair of games to the Expos. As bad as their record is, the Majors are just three points out of first place (within their division). For a young ball club they simply have not found a way to win games in a consistent fashion. Facing a strong Pickering club probably will not help their situation any, but this club needs to remain positive and find a way to win some ball games.

#16. OSHAWA TALONS

Being placed at the bottom of the rankings helped the Expos. Only time will tell how long it will take for the Talons to move up – as they currently sit last in the Eastern Conference. More alarming is their runs for/against ratio. For a team known for its strong pitching the Talons have given up 49 runs while only scoring 21 over their first 8 games. When you look at those numbers it makes things easier to understand why they are struggling. Next up for the Talons – they host the division leading Whitby Chiefs.

OSBA Power Rankings for Week #5

Due to so few games being played last weekend, the Power Rankings will not be posted for this week.

We look forward to having them up following the Week #5 games.

OSBA - POWER RANKINGS - 1ST Edition

Heading into Week #4 OSBA is proud to release the first OSBA POWER RANKINGS.

The Burlington Bulls hold the top spot and one of the new expansion teams, the York Diamonds, jumps out of the gate in to the top 3.

Enjoy!

#1 - Burlington Bulls

The defending champs rise right to the top of the first instalment of the ’10 Power Rankings. With an impressive 6-1 start, their only blemish thus far was dropping game #2 last weekend to the Bengals. This Sunday the Bulls travel to the Durham Region to play three games on Sunday. The first game will be a make-up against Clarington before renewing their rivalry with last season’s Eastern Champions - the Brooklin Dodgers. Look for the Bulls to remain hot and atop the rankings heading into week 5.

#2 - Mississauga Stars

It appears a move to night games hasn’t hurt this club any. In fact, when was the last time the Stars jumped out of the gate so strongly? Sitting at 5-1 it appears the Stars can keep the heat on the top seed Bulls – as they face the Majors who came off a split with the expansion Vikings last weekend. With some new faces on the roster the Stars look stronger and should find a way to come away with four points this weekend.

#3 - York Diamonds

Although they carry the tag of expansion team this summer, the Diamonds are far from being a club looking to find an identity. With some very strong bats, solid defence and sound pitching it is no wonder they have made a smooth transition into the OSBA. Off to an impressive 4-1 start the Diamonds take their act on the road to face the ever so unpredictable Twins. In fact this series has the makings of a slugfest just waiting to happen. With York currently sitting in a 3-way tie atop their division they’ll need to at least salvage a split to keep pace.

#4 - Newmarket Express

All but dead a few months ago, the remaining core of this team and the new management staff deserve a lot of credit. This team was re-built in short order and have posted very good results thus far. This weekend Newmarket hosts the Ajax Indians in what should be considered a very big inner-division match-up for both clubs. And will this series take on any extra meaning? Not only did Ajax knock the Express out of the playoffs last season, but long-time captain Brian Stefancic and lefty hurler Mike Barnett jumped ship to join the Indians in the off-season.

#5 - Pickering Pirates

A bit of a hot and cold start to the Pirates season but things appear to be on track heading into a series against the Cubs. The Pirates have had mixed success against the Clarington franchise over the years, but with the Cubs playing a game prior to this double header one would think this weekend favours the Pirates to come away with a couple of wins. Clarington is a scrappy club so the Pirates can’t afford to take them for granted or the fact that only three points currently separates 1st and 4th in their division.

#6 - Brooklin Dodgers

Brooklin escaped three games of their own this week having Thursday night’s tilt vs. York called off due to poor weather. The added rest coupled with Burlington’s extra game prior to this rematch of last year’s OSBA championship, puts Brooklin in a great position to avenge last year’s sweep in the finals and to give the Bulls at least another loss or two in the process. If you are free and want to watch some OSBA action this weekend this is the series to see.

#7 - Whitby Chiefs

The Chiefs currently ride a 4 game unbeaten streak into their first action at home this season. The month of May was challenging for the Chiefs with 3 make-ups games but after a slow start finished the month with a respectable 3-2-1 record. This weekend the Bengals ride into town fresh off their split with the Bulls. The Chiefs currently sit first in their division and a sweep would help them maintain that spot heading into next week.

#8 - Forest Glen Giants

While not off to a bad start at 3-3, it probably is not a record most would have predicted after such a strong ’09 campaign and the added depth brought in during the off-season. On that point, perhaps the added commitment (playing on a second team) of the new additions has put the team at a slight disadvantage – at least until the club works out how to balance conflicting schedules and has a chance to gel. A convincing win in their last game against the Twins and a chance to play at home against the expansion Vikings might be the break-out opportunity the Giants need to get moving in the right direction.

#9 - Mississauga Southwest Twins

The only club to have played 8 games so far sees the Twins at a record of 3-5. With 6 points, they currently sit tied for first in their division and now face an opponent very similar in style. The York Diamond and Twins both have some decent pitching, a few question marks defensively but come out swinging. The Twins need a sweep to get back to .500 but that will be a tough task against a veteran club off to a great start.

#10 - Ajax Indians

After starting the season 2-0-1 the Indians have hit the skids of late and now carry a losing streak of three games. A road series against a team they have had some success against probably could not have come at a better time. Both clubs made some changes in the off-season but the Indians appear to have the edge when it comes to pitching. In a series that should be full of offense look for the Indians to make things interesting with respect to the standings – especially if they can come away with a sweep.

#11 - Mississauga North Bengals

The Bengals under new skipper Kris Kibsey hold a 2-2 record with two games to be made up. Not bad. More impressive, their split with the Bulls last weekend. Several new faces on the club this year leaves the Bengals as a bit of a mystery around the league. They head to Whitby this week looking to build upon their big win in an effort to build some momentum and climb the Western standings.

#12 - Clarington Cubs

Don’t let the record fool you. Head coach Chris Killoran has made some roster moves that actually look like this club will be more competitive for years to come. Focusing on adding youth over “super-star” labels, the Cubs are in ball games despite their 1-3-1 record. The biggest question of the week...can Butterworth go 21 innings in one day? Pitching is the Cubs’ weakness and three games in one day (not to mention their opposition) probably means another week before this club starts to see some movement up in the rankings.

#13 - Mississauga Majors

In six games so far the Majors look like a team destined to miss the post season again. Things don’t get any easier with the red-hot Stars hosting them this weekend. The Majors need to focus all their energy into winning game 1 and hope for a split each week. Wins will come but this club cannot afford to drop too many series or they’ll be on the outside looking in – quickly. A split last week with Vaughan shows this club is capable of playing decent ball. It’s time to start putting things together and grabbing some much needed points.

#14 - Vaughan Vikings

If anything the Vikings are consistent. They have yet to play in a series where both teams put across runs in the same game. Problem is their record is 1-3. This young club has plenty of potential and their 10-0 win over the Majors in the second game of their doubleheader last weekend gave them their first win in the OSBA. Next up for the Vikings is a trip to Erindale Cardinal Field, to face a strong Giants team. This should be a good test for Vaughan as they look to establish another benchmark for consistency – wins.

#15 - Oshawa Talons

Failing to make the playoffs last season for the first time since joining the OSBA hasn’t materialized into a strong start in the month of May for the Talons. Even their off-season acquisitions have not been enough to ignite this team offensively. Another glaring problem is the lack of innings thrown by staff ace, Mike Arsenault (currently sitting at 3). Perhaps facing a team lower in the rankings is what this club needs to build some confidence and they’ll get that this weekend when they travel to Vaughan to face the Expos.

#16 - Vaughan Expos

Well just like there has to be a team at the top of these rankings there also needs to be one at the bottom. Unfortunately for the Expos it’s their turn to sit as the bottom seed. In fairness, last weekend was tough on the expansion team – playing four games in two days. The end result leaves the Expos as the only team without a win. The good news is they can leap over the Talons in the rankings with a sweep this weekend. Chances are the Talons will also be missing their top pitcher - giving the Expos a golden opportunity to get into the win column.

Well here we are in Week #2 of the OSBA season and our second chance for the OSBA President and Past President to see who can pick the most winners.

2010 OSBA Season Preview

The 10th season for the OSBA starts this coming weekend. Here is a brief overview of what each team did last year and some off-season activity.

EASTERN CONFERENCE

PICKERING PIRATES

2009 Record: 16-9-1

Regular Season Standings: 1st in Conference

Playoffs: Lost in Semi Finals to Ajax

Despite playing two less games in 2009, the Pirates for the second straight season finished with an impressive 16 wins in regular season and captured the Eastern Conference pennant. A club built on a solid core with minimal turnover, Pickering showed they could play ball with a strong offensive attack without compromising defensively. The ball club led the conference in runs for (132) and fewest runs against (76). Despite a successful regular season many would suggest the Pirates took a step backwards failing to get into to the OSBA finals. With some key acquisitions in the off-season the Pirates should once again be in contention for the right to represent the East in the OSBA finals.

Key Losses: Ryan Topping

Key Additions: Matt D’Souza, Mike Robinson, Tyler Mandzuk

Players to watch for: Ryan D’Souza, Jeff Murdoch, Scott Gray, Jaymin Parmar, Dave McElroy, Will Mariani

2010 Outlook: Having been to the finals just once since joining the OSBA in 2004, the Pirates hope to translate regular season success into another opportunity at the OSBA Cup.

WHITBY CHIEFS

      2009 Record: 16-9-1

        Regular Season Finish: 2nd

Playoffs: Lost in round 1 to Brooklin

When comparing their 2009 results with the year previous, the Chiefs improved in every possible area – even if just marginally. And while their elimination in round 1 of the playoffs duplicated the 2008 end result, Whitby won a playoff game – their first in franchise history and took the eventual Eastern Conference champion Brooklin Dodgers to extra innings in the final and decisive game. From a personnel standpoint, the team lost some quality players and veteran leadership (although some may return in limited roles) over the winter, but overall, the majority of players are back. Included in that mix is 2009 Pitcher of the Year Steve Harrington and last season’s rookie standout - Tristan Beadle. To replace the vets, Whitby was fortunate to be able to add some of the best talent available moving up from Junior.

Key Losses: Adam Bickford, Denny Howell, Darryl Lewis, Jared Mercier, Adam Stokes, Adam Tedesco

Key Additions: P/OF Julian Daligadu, RHP Richard Burke, OF Darryl Denyer,  LHP Adam Groome, P/3B James Rowe, IF Steve Mitchell,

Players to watch for: OF Graig Andrew, OF Tristan Beadle, OF Jon Binder,  LHP Steve Harrington, IF Matt Kissel

2010 Outlook: Last year Whitby emerged as one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference at the end of regular season play. Pushing for similar results plus having success in the playoffs are realistic goals for this club. A deep run in an attempt to make the finals should where the club has their sights set.

BROOKLIN DODGERS

2009 Record: 15-10-1

Regular Season Finish: 3rd

Playoffs: Eastern Conference Champions

What a difference a year makes. How did the Dodgers respond after failing to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history? The went all the way to the Champsionship Finals last fall. Overall team commitment and a slightly larger roster - providing extra depth - were big reasons why the turnaround was so successful. Add in sheer pride and expecations to win every year and that sums up how Brooklin operates. After a tight series against Whitby and a relatively easier Conference Finals against the Indians, Brooklin looked average against the Burlington Bulls in the finals. Knowing what it takes to ensure playoff success the Dodgers did some tinkering over the winter and have mixed in some youth and role players to help supplement a few veterans who cannot commit like in years passed. With the majority of the team back again Brooklin has to be considered the favourites to once again come out of the East.

Key Losses: Andrew Elsworth, Ed Ganhao, Colin Appleton

Key Additions: 1B Greg Pomroy, P Jon McGillen, IF Jason Dowse, P Mike Robinson, IF Rob Leva

Players to watch for: P Jeff Canning, SS Mitch Dunn, P Wayne Wickens,

P Sam Grabowski, 2B Dan Blea

2010 Outlook: Brooklin expects to be in the finals every year. But with now sharing back to back championships with the Bulls and the Stars and being one behind Burlington for the most OSBA Cup Championships, Brooklin has even more motivation to win it all this season. Certainly the depth added has to be considered a positive. Only time will tell whether this perennial Cup favourite has what it takes to win it all in ’10.

NEWMARKET EXPRESS

2008 Record: 15-10-1

Regular Season Finish: 4th
Playoffs: Lost to Ajax in 4/5 Game

This franchise has gone through yet another name change. Partially to do with the York Diamonds joining the OSBA to start the 2010 season, and perhaps more importantly – to reflect a passing of the (Booth) buck or changing of the guard, if you will. GM/Head Coach Brian Booth has decided to move away from the day to day operations of the club turning the team over to the veteran players to manage.  In fact up to late February this franchise looked to be folding. Thanks in large part to the few remaining veterans the team built up enough contacts to replinish a roster that has depleted rapidly over the past two years. Nonetheless with new faces comes new optimism, and the Express look to have a deeper level of commitment and should surprise teams who take them lightly.

Key Losses: Brian Stefancic, Jason Booth, Cal Bessant, Brandon Veenstra Mike Barnett, Phil Heimstra
Key Additions: DH/1B Tim Coburn, 3B Mike Steward, 2B Jeff Gruchy,

OF Geoff Van Toen, OF Kevin Paquette

Players to watch for: P Craig Bessant, IF Elgene Bautista-Chan, IF Ellison Bautista-Chan, P Josh Stitt, Utility Jesse Nakayama

2010 Outlook: The ball club will once again set realistic expectations and aim for a .500 regular season record. Should their pitching round into form team management feels they have a shot at surprising some of the top clubs in the OSBA – which in turn would increase their chances of reaching the post season.

AJAX INDIANS

2009 Record: 10-13-3

Regular Season Finish: 5th
Playoffs: Lost in Conference Finals to Brooklin

Like owning a lottery ticket for a chance to win the big prize, the Indians took their below .500 record into a single game elimination match-up with the 4th seeded York Diamond Jacks (Newmarket Express) and never looked back. For a second consecutive year the Indians advanced all the way to the Eastern Conference finals – again defying odds and proving all you need to do is qualify for the playoffs and make the best of the opportunity at hand. Not satisfied with being swept from the playoffs by the Brooklin Dodgers the Indians made some changes – starting at the top. GM/Head Coach Mike Kitevski was able to bring back former member Mike Snider to sever as the team’s newest head coach. With a new Chief Wahoo in place the team then went through a series of practices and exhibition games evaulating their current personnel and other players invited to training camp. Wanting to compete and get to the championship series, the Indians look to have added several new faces in effort to build upon an impressive ’09 campaign.

Key Losses: None

Key Additions: LHP Mike Barnett, 1B Tyler John, Utility Alex Dunn, Utility Jonathan Sukhu, Utility Alan Black, Utility Chambers Middlebrook, and Utility Jeffrey Thomas

Players to watch for: P Chris Theodoru, C Jamie Tessier, 1B Tyler John,

OF Ryan Gordon, LHP Mike Barnett

2010 Outlook: Despite just squeeking into the playoffs last year and having a deep run, the Indians feel they ended short of where they expected to be. With all the additions made and no losses to personnel reported the team should be even stronger. Based on reaching the conference finals the past two seasons one would think this clubs’ expecations is to reach the championship finals and attempt to win their first OSBA Cup.

CLARINGTON CUBS

               2009 Record: 9-15-2

          Regular Season Finish: 6th

                   Playoffs: Failed to qualify

A new name and new uniform wasn’t enough to turn around this one time OSBA powerhouse. Adding P Steve Butterworth via free agency along with a few other former members re-joining the fold certainly helped the club, but the Cubs still failed to make the post season for the second straight year. GM/Head Coach Chris Killoran is always looking for opportunities to add new personnel every off-season - in an effort to strenghten his club. This year appears to be no exception. Part of the problem for this franchise is that with high turnover comes notorious slow starts. Clarington was one of the hottest teams down the stretch in both ’08 and ’09 – at least within their conference. If the team could stabilize itself and minimize turnover it would significantly increase their chance of success. It would appear that with a stronger focus on adding youth for 2010 this might be the year the Cubs move in the right direction.

Key Losses: James Kilpatrick, Chris Aarons, Geoff Van Toen, Jason Boccinfuso, Colin Cockburn, Chad Jennings

Key Additions: 2B/OF Chris Jones, P/1B Shawn Lamb, OF Matt MacIssac, C/OF Kerry Noel, Utility Mike Lenehan

Players to watch for: 1B Paul Graham, P Steve Butterworth,

SS J.P. Vittorio, P Brenan McNeely, C Dan Wilson

2010 Outlook: The Cubs open against the Bulls. Not exactly the best way to earn some wins and get off to a great start. However, a true test to begin the year should help this club. Clarington needs supplementary pitching behind staff ace, Butterworth. A .500 record in the first half should help the Cubs push for a playoff spot. Some question marks for sure, but goals this team should consider attainable.

OSHAWA TALONS

2009 Record: 8-16-2

Regular Season Finish: 7th

Playoffs: Failed to make the playoffs

Oshawa finished last season in last place despite being part of a very tight Eastern Conference playoff race. With the loss of slugger Dan Rushton (serious illness) and poor offensive numbers from just about everyone on the roster it made for a long summer in Oshawa. The club has one of the best 1-2 punches on the mound in Arsenault and Mannella, but even their stellar performances couldn’t prevent the Talons from failing to make the playoffs for the first time since joining the OSBA back in 2002. Head Coach Anthony Cole ran a bunch of tryouts in an effort to find some youth and most importantly offensive flair. The club has shown that their pitching staff keeps them in most ball games. Having some much needed offensive support would give this club a great chance at getting back to the post season. Management is looking for returning veterans to quickly erase last season and get back to their ’08 form. If that happens and some of the new players can contribute as well the Talons should see results in the standings.

Key Losses: Dan Rushton

Key Additions: Utility Aaron Trude, IF Richard Colin-Thome, C Ben Anderson, 1B/C Kyle MacKinnon

Players to watch for: P Mike Arsenault, P Paul Mannella, IF Chad Reid, OF Ryan Reid, C Owen Hudgins

2010 Outlook: The Talons need to come out swinging and hope to connect. Without a solid attack the team is destined to fight for one of the last playoff spots or miss the post season for a second straight season.

YORK DIAMONDS

               2009 Record: N/A

                         Regular Season Finish: N/A
               Playoffs: N/A

The Diamonds also join the OSBA after the Metro Senior Baseball League (MSBL) decided to shut down operations last fall. This ball club has had several championship runs over the years and is considered the most experienced club of the three new expansion franchises joining the OSBA this season. While no official documents been received to validate this claim, the Diamonds have been around for years and several OSBA teams have also faced the club at various senior tournaments in the area. From the outside looking in it appears as though the Diamonds are going through somewhat of a transition. Some of the older members have left opting for play in vintage leagues while team management has tried to fill some of the holes bringing in younger players – in an effort to keep the team running for the long term. Make no mistake about it, this club knows how to win and should be well equipped to take on all comers in the OSBA.

Key Losses: N/A

Key Additions: Nick Guglielmo, Sean O'Neill, Bruce Johnson, Marcuss Weiss, Steven Szoldra, Shikoh Ukiyama, Rocco Lau

Players to watch for: Eric Foley, Steve Foley, Manny Rodriguez

2010 Outlook: With the Diamonds having Thursday night home slots it will be interesting to see if playing less double headers gives the team a clear advantage over the rest of the clubs who host double headers each week. Regardless, the Diamonds will need to gear up for more competition and get adjusted to the OSBA quickly if they want to challenge for a division pennant and a spot in the post season.

BURLINGTON BULLS

   2009 Record: 22-3-1

          Regular Season Finish: 1st

          Playoffs: 2009 OSBA Champions

In a league where just getting to the finals is a goal for most clubs, the Bulls have different standards than most. And why wouldn’t they? Since joining the OSBA back in 2005, the Bulls have made it to the finals an astounding four times. Even more impressive - their 3 championships – with the last two coming in back to back seasons. So saying anything less than a championship for this franchise is a step backwards is an understatement. Understanding the reasons for their success is easy when you break it down. A dedicated coaching staff that employs a team-first attitude and minimizes turnover year to year; complimented with great defensive ability, solid application of baseball fundamentals, a deep and talented pitching staff and strong line-up offensively. Perhaps even more apparent is this team has big game swagger. With minor changes once again this off-season expect Burlington to assume their public enemy #1 label and push for the first team to ever 3-peat.

Key Losses: Kyle Pitman, Cameron Kirby, Brad Johnston

Key Additions: C Chris baker, Utility Matt Smith,

Players to watch for: OF Mike Howden, DH Jeff King, OF Mike Mousseau

2010 Outlook: The view from the top looks good if you are in a Bulls’ uniform. Having their trio of Players to watch for regain their form would certainly go a long way in providing added production throughout the entire order. Regardless, the Bulls are the odd-on favourites to win the OSBA Cup heading into the regular season.

FOREST GLEN GIANTS

        2009 Record: 19-3-4

          Regular Season Finish: 2nd

Playoffs: Lost in Conference Finals to Bulls

Last year the focus was on how much Forest Glen had improved year over year since joining the league in 2006. Well after last season that focus can be shifted to a club on the rise and more specifically, a franchise now sitting in a great position to capture its first OSBA Cup. When you look at the team’s record from last season they were the only team in the West to give the Bulls a run for first overall. They advanced to the Conference Finals for the first time and in many ways needed that loss to the eventual champs - to put everything into perspective. The Giants are solid. They have a deep offensive line-up, are strong defensively and have some quality young arms at their disposal. This past off-season also saw the team bring in some proven talent that should make them even stronger. It would be hard to imagine this club taking a step backwards so look for them to challenge Burlington and all others for the right to represent the West in the finals.

Key Losses: Jordan Wilton

Key Additions: Steve Correia, Brian Dikdan, Rob Rivers, Ryan Wakelin, Kevin Horton

Players to watch for: C Ryan Micallef, IF Denis Hucal, P Mario Mainelli,

C Chris Micolino, OF Mike Drzazga

2010 Outlook: No time like the present for this club. They have all the tools to compete - it’s more a matter of when and not if – at this point. Forest Glen needs to build off their success of last season and get off to a great start. Even with all the new faces added over the winter it is doubtful there will be any lag in performance. Nonetheless a division pennant, first overall in the conference, and advancing all the way to the championship finals are not out of reach for this young squad.

MISSISSAUGA NORTH BENGALS

        2009 Record: 12-11-3

          Regular Season Finish: 3rd

Playoffs: Lost in round 1 to Forest Glen

The Bengals enter the 2010 season with a new manager. Ryan Rattos after running the team for the past few seasons has stepped aside and turned the controls over to Kris Kibsey. A distant 3rd in the Western Conference standings behind front-runners Burlington and Forest Glen last season suggests Kibsey has his work cut out for him. One game above .500 was a drop-off from 2008. However, with the majority of their regulars coming back and several new additions it is evident there has been some work done behind the scenes. With 6 players gone and 9 new players joining - chances are this team will need some time to gel and a slow start would not be good for a club that will need to rack up some points to earn a play-off berth.

Key Losses: Francis Pallotta, Mark Skrela, Jason Silverberg, Jason Ireland, Andrew McDermid, Chuck Vleeschhouwer

Key Additions: Dean Mariani, Clayton Dinger, Jonathan Amandola, Nick Scarcelli, Jason Hewitt, Dexter Chu, Navjot Siduh, Johnny Kim, Matt Lapointe

Players to watch for: OF Cody Ireland, C Garrett Nicol, Utility Rob Phair, P Jonathan Menezes, 1B Greg DaCosta

2010 Outlook: The Bengals can use last year as motivation. Take the approach of trying to improve their regular season record and steal some wins against the elite of the league. Gain some confidence and get back to the form that saw them go all the way to the finals a few years back. Veteran players need to step-up and play to their potential. If they do, this club can not only compete for a playoff spot but has the ability to surprise when it matters the most.

MISSISSAUGA NORTH TWINS

   2009 Record: 11-15-0

          Regular Season Finish: 4th

Playoffs: Lost 4/5 game to Mississauga Stars

When looking at their overall record of ’09, the Twins went backwards winning 8 fewer games during the regular season than in the previous season. While still playing well enough to qualify for the playoffs they wound up in fourth and lost the one game winner take all with the Mississauga Stars. A team than can be described as scrappy, the Twins were near the top of the league in runs for but also one of the clubs that gave up the most as well. A reported huge loss for the Twins in that perennial all-star outfielder Phil Kingston has moved away and will not be with the club this season. This not only leaves the team with a huge hole to fill in centre field but also takes a legitimate threat away on the bases. Team pitching is also hurting both literally and figuratively, but hopefully the return of Tom Malyk and addition of newcomer Tolga Tukoff will give the club the depth needed to compete in a very strong Western Conference. Should the Twins be able to stay relatively healthy and get their big bats into the line-up on a consistent basis they’ll be a mid-pack team that can pull off a few surprises here and there. If not, they will be hard-pressed to challenge for a division title and could have a hard time making the playoffs.

Key Losses: Phil Kingston, Justin Butler, Nick Chisholm

Key Additions: P Tom Malyk, P Tolga Tukoff

Players to watch for: C Jay Woodford, Utility Pat McEnroe, P Curtis Strabac, P Stu Kingston, Utility Ken Woodford

2010 Outlook: With some questions surrounding the team to start the season the Twins need to get off to a decent start. They cannot afford to fall too far behind anyone in the standings. They have had a history of being a streaky team but with more teams in 2010 it will be even more difficult to secure a play-off spot

MISSISSAUGA STARS

       2009 Record: 8-15-3

          Regular Season Finish: 5th

Playoffs: Lost in semi finals to the Bulls

Despite being an original 4 team, one that has experienced the extreme highs of league champs and the ultimate low – brink of folding, last year’s edition seemed to be two different teams within itself. During the regular season the club had various hot and cold streaks. Struggling late in the year and needing help from other teams to secure the 5th and last play-off spot, the Stars appeared to have some commitment issues at times. Granted they also had players out with injuries but overall their record dipped way below what it was in ’08. Then near the end of August and right around playoff time they got an injection of depth from players who had dual commitments playing on a second team. The Stars were able to upset the Twins masking a really awful regular season. However, that’s as far as they would go – being eliminated relatively easily by Burlington in the semi finals. While team management is optimistic the club will rebound this season, the jury is still out on just how good this team will be in 2010.

Key Losses: None reported

Key Additions: Nate Kerr, Greg Cranker

Players to watch for: SS Johnny DeWolfe, IF Jeff Cornish, OF Alex Perez, newcomer Nate Kerr, P Matt Belbeck

2009 Outlook: The Stars know what it takes to win. It will be interesting to see how well the team plays under the lights – moving their start times to 5 and 7:30. Hopefully the commitment to a deeper roster also signals getting back to the clubs’ winning ways.

MISSISSAUGA MAJORS

              2009 Record: 6-19-1

                   Regular Season Finish: 6th

                   Playoffs: Failed to Qualify

Sum up the ’09 season for the Majors in one word - no problem - awful. A club full of young talent certainly under-achieved last year and has a long road ahead of them to get back to where they had success in junior. A 2007 expansion team, the Majors up to now have merely sputtered along at best. This club is going to have to look at taking small steps when looking for ways to measure success along the way. On the bright side it is hard to imagine a record worse than last season. This club needs to aim for a .500 record. While it may not be enough it would certainly put the franchise in a better situation to challenge for a playoff spot and go a long way in restoring confidence in their talented core.

Key Losses: Andrew Dutra, Kyle Gerrard, Adam Sawoszczuk

Key Additions: Michael Bannon, Marcel Roque, Nathan Burgess

Players to watch for: P/IF Joey Pileggi, P/IF Josh Pileggi, IF Danny Taormina, P/1B Paul Roth, OF JP Anderson

2010 Outlook: The Majors enter the season as the underdog of the OSBA. Partially because no one really knows what to expect from all three expansion teams added over the winter, but mainly due to the fact this team has yet to bust out. The new acquisitions will need to be key contributors if the Majors hope to have any success. Mix in some veteran accountability of their own contributions and this franchise has some strong pieces to push for results. This ball club needs to be in every series and hope they can muster up enough wins to advance to the post season. From there – anything can happen.

VAUGHAN EXPOS

2009 Record: N/A

                   Regular Season Finish: N/A

                   Playoffs: N/A

The Expos come over from the former Metro Senior Baseball League (MSBL) where they saw limited success in 2009. Despite not being considered the top team in their former league, the Expos are optimistic that a strong blend of veteran savvy and the younger players’ enthusiasm will be a nice mix – capable of some success in a much larger association. As an expansion team for 2010 there really is not a lot of detail on this organization. The ball club enters their first campaign with a roster of over 20 players. So from a depth perspective it looks like the Expos certainly have it, now the question becomes do they have what it takes to compete with the top teams in the OSBA? Only time will tell. Realistic goals have been set by team management and not wanting to sell the ball club short – there is optimism that the Expos will be worthy advisories and challenge for a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Key Losses: None reported

Key Additions: None reported

Players to watch for: None provided

2010 Outlook: The Expos have a golden opportunity to fly under the radar the first month and set themselves up with a great start. Any team that can put together a streak early could make the difference between finishing in the playoffs versus on the outside looking in.

PRESIDENTS ADDRESS

While the forecast does not project for sunny skies, it will take more than scattered showers to dampen the enthusiasm of opening day 2010. With several clubs opting to avoid Mother’s Day conflicts the OSBA will officially kick-off its 10th anniversary on Saturday, May 8th.

When looking back, it is hard to believe the OSBA has already reached the decade mark. When founder Rod Holinaty started play back in 2001 there were only four teams. I’m happy to report all four founding teams are still in operation today. And while several  of the players have changed and three of those four clubs have changed their team names these franchises are just as dedicated to the OSBA now as they were when they first took to the field 10 years ago.

In a year designed for celebration and looking back on fond memories, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the loss of one of OSBA’s biggest supporters. Gerry Ray who had been with the OSBA since 2002 as General Manager and Head Coach of the Barrie Red Sox/Brewers franchise, passed away after a courageous battle against cancer. Gerry was a vocal, no nonsense executive member with a grin from ear to ear. A respected man not only in the community of Barrie but across the entire OSBA, Gerry served as Vice President, East for two years and will always be remembered as one of the individuals who helped get the association’s annual Canada Day tournament off the ground.  At this time, I would like to announce that the OSBA Tournament will now be officially named the Gerry Ray Memorial Tournament. After receiving the blessing of Gerry’s family, the OSBA wanted to find a way to recognize and honour Gerry and this venue seemed like the perfect fit.

The Barrie franchise has taken a year off from operations and will review their situation – in hope of finding someone to take over the day to day management of the team for next season. Despite losing Barrie there was plenty of expansion discussion and after several months of dialogue three new teams will join and call the OSBA their home this year. Joining are the York Diamonds (from MSBL), The Vaughan Expos (MSBL) and Vaughan Vikings – a junior team that graduated from the Toronto Metro league. Each of these franchises along with the other remaining 13 will look to stake claim as the next OSBA champion.

The Burlington Bulls currently have a lock on that distinction – having won their second consecutive championship (tying the Mississauga Stars and Brooklin Dodgers) and third title (most in OSBA history) in just their 5th season.  A perennial favourite, the Bulls have a big target on their backs and they wouldn’t want it any other way. Who will be this year’s stand-out players, surprise teams, and league champion Let’s play ball and find out!

Kind regards,

Steve Smith
President, OSBA

VAUGHAN VIKINGS

              2009 Record: N/A

                   Regular Season Finish: N/A

                   Playoffs: N/A

The Vikings were the last of three expansion teams to join the OSBA over the winter. With the entire team graduating from the Metro loop in Junior, the Vikings come to the OSBA as a club that has played together for several years. There will be no issues with team chemistry and that should help this franchise as it gets accustom to the senior ranks. With Rep level experience, the Vikings should be looked at as a club that will be solid in all areas. Team management would not quote on what their expectations are for this year but look for this team to challenge for one of the four playoffs spots in the Western Conference. This Vikings are well run and if leadership starts from the top, the OSBA has found a gem in the Vaughan Vikings. Look for this team to play well right from the start and give some of the veteran teams a real test over the course of the season.

Key Losses: None reported

Key Additions: None reported

Players to watch for: None provided

2010 Outlook: The Vikings have nothing to gage their success against other than how they performed last season. So by their own standards, they will want to come out of the gate flying and show the rest of the association that they can compete and belong at this level. It is this type of drive that will be needed for the ball club to reach the post season in their inaugural year.

Diamond Jacks change name

With the recent addition of the York Diamonds to OSBA this season. The York Diamond Jacks decided that they would change their name to avoid any confusion and also as a means to herald a new vision with the team as they move forward with a new coaching staff, after long time coach Brian Booth had moved upstairs as the General Manager of the team. This will be the fourth name that the team has had since they joined OSBA as a founding member, then being called the Richmond Hill Phoenix.

They will now be called the NEWMARKET EXPRESS

They also have a new website address: http://www.leaguelineup.com/newmarketexpress

2010 OSBA schedule for May up

As in past years OSBA is unable to have a complete schedule done at this time of the year due to some OSBA teams unable to get their home dates set till the end of April or beginning of May. So to make sure teams are able to start to get started and get things set for the first month of the season with regards to umpires and player/coach work schedules, a complete May schedule has been completed, distributed and posted here on the OSBA website.

After a false start on Friday night when several errors on the schedule that was sent to coaches, were pointed out to the scheduler Rod Holinaty, he blew up the original version and restarted. With input from several coaches, all the errors should have been corrected. There might still be some alterations with game times (see Stars home games) but we should be good to go for May.

The season will start with the expansion Vaughan Expos visiting the 2009 Eastern Conference Champion Brooklin Dodgers at Ritson Field in Oshawa. Game times will be 12:00pm and 2:30pm. Next up will be the 2009 OSBA Champion Burlington Bulls having the Clarington Cubs making the trek out to Milcroft "C" to start the Bulls attempt to win their 4th OSBA championship. Game times will be 1:00pm and 3:30pm

Filling out the rest of OSBA Opening Day another 3 doubleheaders will be played. The first will see the expansion Vaughan Vikings visiting the Mississauga North Bengals, the Whitby Chiefs visiting the Ajax Indians and then finally the York Diamonds visiting the York Diamond Jacks.

The second day of OSBA Opening Weekend will see the remaining 6 teams take to the field. Mississauga Stars visit the Oshawa Talons, The Mississuaga Southwest Twins will visit the Mississauga Majors and the Pickering Pirates will visit the Forest Glen Giants.

Stay tuned for the Presidents letter and the 2010 Season Previews.

- The season will start on the May 8th/9th weekend and will end on the August 28th/29th weekend, with playoffs starting shortly thereafter.

- OSBA will again have 5 teams in each conference make the playoffs. The division winners will be ranked 1 and 2 based on their records. The next best 3 teams will be ranked 3rd to 5th. The 4th and 5th place teams will then play a 1 game playoff for the right to play the #1 ranked team in the first round of the playoffs.

- Ontario Stars announced that they will be taking part in two tournaments during the 2010 season. The first one will be on the June 11th-13th weekend and will be held in Ottawa. 1st 2010 OSBA meeting hi-lites

OSBA coaches met today in Richmond Hill for a full and busy meeting.

Here are some of the hi-lites from the meeting.

OSBA welcomed it's 15th team for the 2010 season as the Vaughan Expos were approved as members starting in the 2010 season. The Expos come to OSBA from the MSBL where they had a long and succesful run. They look forward to taking part in OSBA and to help the league to continue to grow and prosper.

OSBA is now on the hunt for a 16th team to round out to an even number, though there will be no problem going forward with 15 solid teams.

Several proposals were submitted for discussion, here are a few of the more interesting ones:

   - possible fines for coaches missing multiple meetings
   - Disciplinary Committee duties more thoroughly defined
   - deadline for rainouts to be made up
   - new playoff roster rules ie: cutoff dates, roster size
   - possible franchise player designation
   - playoff exemptions only for players that have had an injury
   - Designated Runner for catcher with two out, as an option, not mandatory
   - minimum number of innings for pitchers to be able to pitch in playoffs
   - reduction of batting order from 11 to 10
   - teams not allowed to have players exit lineup once game has started unless substituted for or due to injury
   - year-end banquet tickets, each team to have at least 4 included in league registration fee

Also as part of OSBA's 10th anniversary celebration a proposal was put forward for a game at the Rogers Centre between players who played in OSBA between 2001 and 2005 (and still playing) against players who started in 2006 up to 2010 (and still playing). This could pit teammates against each other, in what could be a very fun and interesting game.

The annual Jays game will be Saturday April 17th when the Jays take on the Los Angeles Angels

The return of the Ontario Stars will also happen in the 2010 season, with possible dates being the July 4th weekend in Cooperstown and/or November in Florida or Las Vegas.

The last item is the announcement of the 2009 1st and 2nd team All-Stars. (see below)

More info and updates on everything above and more in the coming weeks.
