OSBA adds two teams
The Ontario Senior Baseball Association added two teams for the 2013 season, this will expand OSBA currently 21 teams.
The two teams added were the Scarborough Dragons, formerly of the Scarborough Adult Baseball League and the Milton Orioles a brand new team formed for the sole purpose of joining OSBA.
While the Milton Orioles are starting out brand they do have a few players who have played in OSBA in the past. They look to expand their roster before the season and hit the ground running in the ever tough Western Conference.
The Scarborough Dragons will be rookies in OSBA, joining the Eastern Conference but they are far from a rookie team, as they have just completed a three year run as the SABL Champs, the first team to have done so in SABL history.
Recap of 1st meeting of the year for OSBA
The Ontario Senior Baseball Association had it's first meeting of the 2013 season back on January 13th and there were a few big changes.
The main and biggest change was OSBA welcoming in to the fold two new teams, the Scarborough Dragons and the Milton Orioles.
Also it was announced that the Ajax Indians would have a new GM/Coach in Mark Salonious. Mark is taking over the team after an exhaustive search to find a replacement for out going GM/Coach Mike Snider.
The next big ticket item that was on the OSBA agenda was the voting of the five positions on the Executive Board. This is where another big change occurred as Rod Holinaty decided to not run for the Secretary position that he had been in for the past 8 years. All other positions saw the incumbent stay in their position.
President - Steve Smith
West Vice President - Ken Woodford
East Vice President - Brian Booth
Treasurer - Ron Smith
Secretary - Ron Smith
The next OSBA meeting is scheduled for Sunday February 24th in Richmond Hill

OSBA Blue Jays ticket sale is back
The Ontario Senior Baseball Association will once again be selling tickets to a Toronto Blue Jays game this coming season.
This year the game that was chosen was Saturday April 20th, game time is 1:07. The Toronto Blue Jays will be taking on the hated New York Yankees. The tickets being sold are all behind the New York Yankees bullpen.
If you are interested in purchasing tickets please contact your local team representative or league President Steve Smith at stephen.smith@rogers.com
OSBA March meeting Hi-lites
This past Sunday March 24th, OSBA held it's most recent Board meeting. Several items of interest were discussed and here is a quick peek:
- It was announced that both the Oshawa Athletics and Bolton Braves had folded and would not be competing this coming season. This left OSBA with 19 teams.
- Shortly after the announcement of the two teams folding, three new teams made presentations to the gathered OSBA coaches, seeking entry into OSBA for the 2013 season.
- The three teams making the presentations were the Mississauga North Tigers, Peterborough Tigers and the Bowmanville Bandits. All three teams gave impressive presentations and all three were voted in as new members of OSBA. This brought the total number of teams in OSBA to a record 22 going into the 2013 season.
- The 22 teams were divided up into two conferences, Western and Eastern, with 11 in each. A 26 game schedule was voted on as well as the elimination of divisions within the Conference. Each team will play all 10 other teams in the conference in one doubleheader and then play three randomly selected teams in the confernece and additional doubleheader each, giving each team 26 games.
- The 2013 OSBA season is looking at starting on the May 4th/5th weekend, weather and park permit permitting.
- Things are looking good for the renewal of the annual OSBA tournament on the July 1st weekend, with Mississauga being the host city. More details to follow.
More news to follow in the next few days.
All-Star Game Showcases OSBA's Best
The OSBA All-Star Game at Rogers Centre was a well-played affair that ended in thrilling fashion, as Tristan Beadle provided a walk-off single to give the East a 6-5 victory over the West. The game was close the whole way through and featured some great defense, as well as some timely hitting.
Jordan Cleveland started for the East and yielded a run over his two innings of work. Sunny Sandhu's line drive single scored Eric Foley to give the West a 1-0 lead in the second. Foley was the starting pitcher for the West and pitched two shutout innings while striking out three. In the third, the West tacked on two more off Todd Van Laere to go up 3-0. Evan DePiero sparked the rally with a beautiful bunt single. Clint Jeon then hustled a base hit into a double, and Andy Ryder cashed both runners with a line drive single.
In the bottom of the third, the East got on the board against reliever John Bethune, as Bryan Landry singled and later scored as the back end of a double play throw that errantly went past first base. In the fourth the West made it 4-1 as Jeff Murphy walked, John Bethune singled, and Shawn Dunsmore ripped an RBI double. In the bottom of the inning, the East tallied three times to tie the game. Todd Blair walked and scored on a base hit by Tristan Beadle. Kyle Searle's double then plated Beadle, and Searle scored on a Bobby Gilligan base hit.
In the fifth, Luke Jenkins had a 1-2-3 inning and the East took the lead in the bottom of the frame as Matthew Laise allowed singles to Dan Joy and Steve Mitchell and the East pulled off a double steal to take the lead. Laise then pitched out of trouble to keep the score at 5-4 for the East. In the sixth, neither Rob Hehir nor Bobby Gilligan allowed a run, but the craziest moment of the game ensued after Gilligan hit leadoff batter Stuart Kingston on the forearm. The home plate umpire originally called it a foul ball. Kingston was in obvious pain and showed the ball mark to the umpire. It was determined that the ball did hit Kingston but on appeal, the first base umpire said that Kingston had swung at the ball. So Kingston stepped back in the box, and in obvious pain, proceeded to hit the next pitch down the left field line narrowly foul, as the ball crashed off the facing of the second deck. Kingston completed the at-bat by getting hit by a pitch for real. After the inning, Kingston went straight to the hospital where it was determined that he had a broken wrist, which will require surgery to repair. It was unbelievable that someone could hit a ball that far with a broken wrist.
In the seventh the West tied the game off of Darryl Noble as Sean Difeo was hit by a pitch and Jon Muia doubled, before Shawn Dunsmore's sacrifce fly. Noble was able to strand Muia at third and the game stayed tied at 5-5. In the bottom of the inning, Tim March cruised through it striking out two. In the eighth, Brad Binns allowed a single to Tim March but got out of the inning unscathed. The inning featured a great diving play by third baseman Craig Megill and a great running catch by catcher Kyle Searle. In the bottom of the eighth with the curfew approaching, March retired the first two batters, before Megill singled and went all the way to third on a wild pitch. Tristan Beadle then hit a sinking line drive to right that found its way to the turf to give the East a walkoff win.
The game was extremely well-played and featured two differing philosphies as the West used 24 players, with all of them getting to bat. The East used 18 players, with 7 players playing the entire game. Congratulations to the East and manager Romeo Persaud for avenging last year's defeat and for gaining home field in the Finals.

Eastern Conference
PLAY-OFF PREVIEWS
Bowmanville Blue Jays vs. Whitby Chiefs
Regular Season Record & Final Standing:
Jays: 9-17-0; 8th in conference
Chiefs: 22-3-1; 1st in conference
Overview:
The Bowmanville Blue Jays came about after the Ajax Indians lost their diamond to preparations for the Pan Am games. Even without having to move, the team name could have easily changed and with good reason. Long-time Indians Mike Snider and Jamie Tessier retired and Mark Salonius stepped-up to become the team’s next manager. The Indians/Jays franchise has given the Chiefs trouble in the past and will be looking to do it again in the opening round. Whitby continues to set the bar for regular season play but needs to shed the proverbial monkey off their backs and get to the championship series after three consecutive trips to the conference finals.
Skinny:
On paper this series would appear to be a mismatch. Twenty-seven points separated these two teams between first and 8th seed. However, the Jays were responsible for 1 of the 3 Chiefs’ losses during the regular season and that will certainly sit in the back of the minds of Chiefs’ management. These clubs played four times during the regular season with Whitby taking the other three contests.
Players to Watch For:
Jays: Utility Tyler Shortt, P Luke Jenkins, P/Utility Riley Whelan, C Paul Evans, Utility Kyle Cormier
Chiefs: OF/P Tristan Beadle, 1B Dan Alayon, OF Mike Del Fuoco, SS Steve Mitchell, OF Jon Thiebaud
X-Factor:
Offense: Both teams have very strong starting pitching and it is going to take a formidable offensive line-up to counter the quality arms both teams will serve-up in this series. Bowmanville has some very scrappy players who can not only put the ball into play but also find the gaps in a hurry. Whitby has a very balanced attack that should make things difficult on the Jays defence. While this series probably shouldn’t be considered for a slugfest, the club that can get the most offensive production stands the best chance to advance.
Kendal Eagles vs. Clarington Cubs
Regular Season Record & Final Standing:
Eagles: 12-13-1; 7th in conference
Cubs: 22-4; 2nd in conference
Overview:
A year ago things looked very different for both clubs. Kendal in their first season in the OSBA failed to qualify for the playoffs while the Cubs advanced to the post-season as the 8th seed but were eliminated in the first round while trying to defend their 2011 championship title. In the off-season Clarington re-vamped in a big way and their efforts show in the standings. Kendal also re-tooled albeit to a much smaller scale but managed to slip into the playoffs for their first crack at the OSBA Cup.
Skinny:
The Cubs were the biggest benefactors in the folding of the Oshawa Athletics over the winter picking up a handful of quality players. They didn’t stop there. They also added some youth, managed to pry away a 5 tool player from the rival Dodgers and welcomed back two players who had been out of the game for a few years – getting a quality pitcher and arguably the franchise’s best offensive player of all time. Not too shabby. As mentioned Kendal fine-tuned picking up a little youth and some OSBA experience as well. The Eagles can be described as a solid veteran team but they’ll have their hands full in this series. During the regular season these two teams met twice with the Cubs sweeping the series.
Players to Watch For:
Eagles: SS Bryan Landry, P Troy Foster, IF Sean Tremaine, C/P Nick Stacey, P Phil Cammasulli
Cubs: P Mark Dainty, IF Mick Kurhan, OF/DH Colin Cockburn, IF JP Vittorio, P Todd Van Laere
X-Factor:
Pitching: Clarington has tons of it and was essentially toying with several teams this year while also doing a good job of dividing up innings. Not having to throw Dainty all that much or even needing Matt Tosoni to attempt a comeback on the mound puts into perspective just how deep this staff is and how confident the Cubs must be feeling heading into this series. The Eagles have some very good pitching of their own lead by Cammasulli, veteran Troy Foster and Kyle Vowles. Both teams will need to rely heavily on their pitchers – especially when hitting comes out a little flat after the standard two week break between the end of the regular season and start of playoffs.
Oshawa Talons vs. Peterborough Tigers
Regular Season Record & Final Standing:
Talons: 16-9-1; 3rd in conference
Tigers: 9-14-3; 6th in conference
Overview:
Gone are the multi coloured uniforms and the years of failing to make the playoffs. The Talons were right in the middle of the playoff race this summer – building on a relatively successful season last year. The expansion Tigers joined the OSBA during the off-season and certainly caught the attention of many teams. A solid 3rd place regular season standing has to have this young team in a great mindset as they enter their post-season at the senior level.
Skinny:
The Talons core while still productive, are starting to get a little long in the tooth – especially when compared to young teams like the Tigers. With their competitive juices still flowing and gas still in the tank, Talons players and management did a solid job bringing in some established players to help bolster their overall depth. The Tigers came up as a core group from Junior and will certainly draw on their speed and young live arms to counter the Talons playoff experience. During the regular season is was the up-start Tigers who swept the two game series giving them perhaps a metal edge heading into game 1.
Players to Watch For:
Tigers: P Jordan Cleveland, SS Kurtis Borland, P Mike Nieukirk, Utility Grant Elson, OF Brandon Manley
Talons: IF Adam Dupont, SS Jorge Robles, C Owen Hudgins, P Jamie Agombar, OF Ryan Reid
X-Factor:
Experience: Both teams have travelled different paths leading to this series. The Talons have tenure in the league and several trips to the post-season over their 14 years in the association. The Tigers are new to senior but have been together for many years themselves coming up the ranks in the EOBA. Neither team has faced one another in the playoffs obviously, and playing one another just twice over a 26 game schedule really doesn’t give either team much advanced scouting. Regardless of what experience has been gained leading up to this series – the team that lays it out all on the line and goes for broke will emerge and advance to the conference semi-finals.
Port Hope Flyers vs. Pickering Pirates
Regular Season Record & Final Standing:
Flyers: 18-8; 5th in conference
Pirates: 15-10-1; 4th in conference
Overview:
The Pirates are the defending champs and will try to become the first team since the Burlington Bulls to successfully defend their crown. Standing in their way are last season’s Eastern Division 1 champions the Port Hope Flyers. Both teams brought in some new pieces re-tooling on the fly - adding to what are already two very strong rosters. On paper this is the series of the first round in the East.
Skinny:
These two clubs met in last year’s conference semi-finals and despite forfeiting game #1 due to lack of players the Flyers never gave up and took the eventual champs to a 3rd and decisive game. Both teams qualified some excellent players that were not part of the series last year and the fact these two teams meet in round one this time around means one of last year’s best will be out earlier than was to be expected. These two teams only faced each other twice this season and that was way back in May. Pickering swept the Flyers but surely Port Hope has erased that from their memory banks.
Players to Watch for:
Flyers: IF Brett Jiggins, OF/P Kyle Maloney, 1B Brad Pickering, P Mark Garrard, P/Utility Bobby Gilligan
Pirates: P/IF Brad Binns, P/Utility Darryl Nobel, 3B Craig Megill, P Will Mariani, OF Matt D’Souza
X-Factor:
Leadership: Both teams have some tremendous talent. The leaders offensively for each team need to step-up their game and the starters need to be aware of each team’s blend of speed and power. Both teams also like to run as part of their offensive make-up so catchers better be ready as well. With a strong veteran presence on both of these teams it’s simply a question of who wants it more.
Western Conference
PLAY-OFF PREVIEWS
Mississauga Majors vs. Vaughan Vikings
Regular Season Record & Final Standing:
Majors: 10-15-1; 8th in conference
Vikings: 21-4-1; 1st in conference
Overview:
The Majors took 3 of 4 games from the Vaughan Expos near the end of their schedule to help solidify a playoff spot. However, as the only playoff team in the conference below .500 they unfortunately draw the top seeded Vikings in the opening round. Vaughan hasn’t played since August 18th so they should be well-rest when they open on the road in Mississauga.
Skinny:
The Vikings only lost two consecutive games once this season. They also went on to put together multi game winning streaks after that series back in June and after their first loss in May. The only other time they lost was in their final game – which if history is to repeat itself again doesn’t bode well for the Majors. The Majors had a different pattern this season - win two in a row then suffer a few losses before their next pair of victories. Either way, one of these teams needs to win 2 of 3 to move on.
Players to Watch For:
Majors: 1B/P Michael Bannon, IF/P Josh Pileggi, OF JP Anderson, P Craig Rattos, IF/P Joey Pileggi
Vikings: OF Julian Testani, P/EH Matthew Laise, P/1B Daniel Pelley, OF Brandon Bolarinho, C Marco Saccilotto
X-Factor:
Desire: The Majors are certainly better than their regular season record would suggest but have limited success in the playoffs since joining the league back in 2007. The Vikings, despite their consistent regular season success also have holes in their post-season resume. For one of these two teams the pattern will continue to hold true while the other will get another at least another round and one step closer to the championship series.
Mississauga Southwest Twins vs. Scarborough Dragons
Regular Season Record & Final Standing:
Twins: 11-11-4; 8th in conference
Dragons: 21-4-1; 2nd in conference
Overview:
The expansion Dragons did very well in their first season as part of the OSBA. In fact, very well is perhaps an understatement. Looking for better competition the Dragons certainly got it but one could easily argue they helped bring the level of competitiveness up in the West. They’ll get their first taste of the post-season by hosting the Twins - who dropped to 7th despite being tied in points – losing out on first tie break (most wins).
Skinny:
These clubs met four times playing in back to back weeks. Overall, the Dragons came out on top with a 2-1-1 record and outscoring the Twins by a 36-11 margin. The Dragons appear to be heading into the play-offs healthy and with a full roster. The Twins on the other hand may have a huge question mark with the injury to Stu Kingston at the all-star game back in August.
Players to Watch For:
Twins: IF Justin Matejka, P/OF Curtis Strabac, C Jay Woodford, OF Jeff Bond, P Chris Lee
Dragons: P Rob Hehir, P Tim March, C Devlin Connelly, SS Andy Ryder, OF Pat Janssen
X-Factor:
Capitalizing on Runners in Scoring Position:
The Dragons surrendered the fewest runs against this season and their 2.62 runs per game average suggests teams better capitalize when runners are in scoring position or run the risk of possibly being shutout. Both Hehir (LHP) and March (RHP) have great moves to first – which help keep most runners from attempting to move 90 feet. The Twins have a veteran ball club that may need to resort to some small ball to push their runners along and put more pressure on their opposition.
Metro Mets vs. Forest Glen Giants
Regular Season Record & Final Standing:
Mets: 13-13; 6th in conference
Giants: 17-8-1; 3rd in conference
Overview:
The Mets struggled in the second half of the regular season picking up just 4 wins against 9 losses. Nevertheless they managed to finish with a .500 record and avoid the top two teams in the opening round. The Giants had a very strong regular season one surely to please management who again in the offseason were uncertain if the team would be able to continue.
Skinny:
These two teams only faced one another twice during the regular season and it was the Giants who pulled off the sweep. With both clubs averaging over 4 runs against per game during the regular season look for that trend to continue in this series.
Players to Watch For:
Mets: P Clint Jeon, IF Sean Difeo, 3B Alex Beauvais, Utility J.P Caissy, P Will Lunan
Giants: 1B/OF Rick Boutilier, Utility Marcus DiRollo, P Jeff Little, OF Duncan Perry, Utility Shawn Dunsmore
X-Factor:
Roster Depth:
Part of rebuilding is dealing with the untimely losses of players who head back to school. It’s a growing pain that can see teams who have tremendous depth over the summer struggle mightily in the fall. That said both teams have several players that play outside the OSBA as well. Some will be in playoffs elsewhere and may be more banged-up or fatigued while others will be completely free of other commitments and able to focus on this series. The team that can dress the majority of their best line-up will have an upper hand in this series.
Newmarket Express vs. York Diamonds
Regular Season Record & Final Standing:
Express: 14-11-1; 5th in conference
Diamonds: 14-10-2; 4th in conference
Overview:
It only seems fitting that the two mid-pack playoff teams are so close to one another in a number of categories such as: points, runs for and runs against. The Diamonds who made it to the conference finals last year will once again look to veteran savvy to lead the way in the post season. Newmarket has a lot of experience as well which should help dub this series one for the ages.
Skinny:
Both teams had modest winning streaks at various points this season. Another thing that should be pointed out is that they both were able to prevent prolonged droughts before getting back on the winning track. The Express swept the regular season series 2-0 but by the narrowest of margins – setting up what should be a very evenly matched opening round contest.
Players to Watch for:
Express: Utility Lloyd Crespi, OF Steven Reiss, OF Gbenga Ajasin, P John Bethune, Utility Steve Zimmermann
Diamonds: OF Steve Foley, OF Steve Correia, C/OF Rich Freeman, P Eric Foley, 3B Denis Hucal
X-Factor:
Pitching:
With two pitchers logging 50+ innings each, Newmarket clearly has a depth issue and will need Bethune and Zimmermann to go the distance in each start. If the series goes three it may be a pitching by committee effort for the Express. Based on how the innings pitched are divided amongst the Diamonds’ staff it would appear on paper at least they have more depth. Should any starter falter it is that available depth or lack thereof that could make the biggest impact in this series.

Eastern Conference
Pickering Pirates vs. Whitby Chiefs
Regular Season Record & Final Standing:
Pirates: 15-10-1; 4th in conference
Chiefs: 22-3-1; 1st in conference
Overview:
A re-match of the 2012 Eastern Conference Finals comes a round earlier this season. Last year, Pickering won the series two games to one before winning their first-ever OSBA championship. The defending champs won the final two games of a triple header last Sunday over the Port Hope Flyers to advance to the semis. Whitby managed to sweep the Bowmanville Blue Jays to keep the quest for championship berth alive. The Chiefs have made it to the conference finals each of the past three seasons but have yet to make it to the league finals.
Skinny:
The Pirates-Chiefs rivalry is currently one of the best in the Eastern Conference if not within the entire association. These two teams match-up extremely well and are often fighting for tops in their division/conference and for the right to represent in the finals. This season these two clubs played one another just twice and it was the Chiefs that came away with the sweep. The regular season means nothing at this point so look for both teams to be at their best in this series.
Players to Watch For:
Pirates: OF Sydney Saunders, C Scott Gray, OF Matthew D’Souza, P Brad Binns, IF Craig Megill
Chiefs: OF Graig Andrew, C Kyle Smeelen, OF Tristan Beadle, 1B Dan Alayon, 3B Preston Wasmund
X-Factor:
Home Field Advantage: When two teams are this evenly matched the entire series could come down to one bad bounce or a late inning rally. Both teams receive decent fan support but that final at bat may play a factor at some point over the weekend. Unfortunately for these two teams only one club can advance to the conference finals so expect both teams to come out slugging, play solid defensively and capitalize on errors.
Peterborough Tigers vs. Clarington Cubs
Regular Season Record & Final Standing:
Tigers: 9-14-3; 3rd in conference
Cubs: 22-4; 2nd in conference
Overview:
The expansion Tigers made quick-work of the Oshawa Talons last weekend picking up their first two OSBA playoff victories via a sweep and advance to the semi-finals as the underdog in this series. The Cubs also swept their first round opponents – knocking out the Kendal Eagles in two very low-scoring games.
Skinny:
Going all the way back to opening weekend these two teams faced one another in what was the first series for the Tigers within the OSBA. The two teams split and did so for a second time back in July. In the four regular season games played between these two clubs this summer the Cubs finished with a +1 when comparing the overall runs for/against. Both teams will be missing some key players this series so look for some players to step-up their game with added responsibility.
Players to Watch For:
Tigers: P/Utility Mike Nieukirk, IF Kurtis Borland, P Jordan Cleveland, OF Curtis Lee, C Keith Capstick
Cubs: OF/DH Colin Cockburn, P Shawn Lamb, P Mark Dainty, IF Thomas Fearon, C Mike Welbourne
X-Factor:
Offense: After the dreaded first week back, these two teams will need to have their bats going. In limited history between these two teams the numbers show that either one team is up by quite a bit (5+ runs) or the games are within just a few (3 or less). Piling on some insurance runs whenever the opportunity presents itself should be the mindset for both teams heading into this series. Then again, given the pitching quality scoring runs could easily be at a premium as well.
Western Conference
Mississauga Majors vs. Scarborough Dragons
Regular Season Record & Final Standing:
Majors: 10-15-1; 8th in conference
Dragons: 21-4-1; 2nd in conference
Overview:
The Majors made short work of the well-rested Vikings last round knocking out the top seed in two straight games. They now take on the #2 seed that just completed round 1 last night with a convincing win over the Southwest Twins. The expansion Dragons will have less than 24 hours off before taking to the field to start this next best of three series.
Skinny:
These two teams only met twice during the regular season. The Dragons won both by a fairly large margin outscoring the Majors by a combined 22-7 tally. Moreover, the Dragons surrendered the fewest runs against (68) of all OSBA teams this season. The Majors on the other hand allowed the most (171) of any team that qualified for the playoffs.
Players to Watch For:
Majors: 1B/P Michael Bannon, IF/P Josh Pileggi, OF JP Anderson, Utility Simon Lahay, IF/P Joey Pileggi
Dragons: P Rob Hehir, SS Andy Ryder, P/OF Pat Janssen, Bryan Todes, 1B Chad Simone
X-Factor:
Defence: The amount of runs against each team gave up during the regular season has already been covered. The Dragons know their defence cannot have let-downs like in the series with the Twins. The Majors perhaps saving their best for when it matters most must also minimize errors to increase their chances of knocking off another top seed if they want to advance to the conference finals.
York Diamonds vs. Forest Glen Giants
Regular Season Record & Final Standing:
Diamonds: 14-10-2; 4th in conference
Giants: 17-8-1; 3rd in conference
Overview:
The Giants got on out their first round match-up with little trouble – bouncing the Metro Mets in two games. You would think scoring 17 runs over two games in any series is impressive but when reviewing what York did in their series with the Newmarket Express – that’s just down-right massive. York piled on 39 runs in their sweep – scoring a league record 29 runs in their opening game.
Skinny:
These two teams only faced one another twice during the regular season and those games were played pretty early in the regular season schedule. Going back to late May, it was the Giants who took the series sweeping the Diamonds by a combined score of 19-10. York finished the year with the second lowest runs against in the conference while the Giants finished 2nd in most runs scored.
Players to Watch For:
Diamonds: P Eric Foley, OF Steve Foley, OF Steve Correia, IF Denis Hucal, IF Rob Rivers
Giants: P/1B Kevin Horton, 1B Rick Boutilier, P Pat Vecchiarelli, Utility Duncan Perry, Utility Marcus DiRollo
X-Factor:
Scouting Report: These teams have faced on another several times over the years. While the Diamonds have a very committed core of veterans the Giants have been working hard over the last three seasons to keep their team not only on the field but competitive. This series has a lot of former Giants players now in Diamonds uniforms. In addition, several players from both teams have been or currently still are teammates on another team in a different league. So while one team is more established roster-wise than the other, both teams have a pretty good idea of what will be across the diamond when things get underway. The team that can best use this knowledge to their advantage should leap into the conference finals next weekend.
Eastern Conference
Clarington Cubs vs. Whitby Chiefs
Regular Season Record & Final Standing:
Cubs: 22-4; 2nd in conference
Chiefs: 22-3-1; 1st in conference
Overview:
For the 3rd consecutive year, the Clarington Cubs and Whitby Chiefs meet for the chance to represent the Eastern Conference in the OSBA Finals. Two years ago, the Cubs knocked out the Chiefs in the conference final and went on to win their first league championship. Last season in the opening round it was Whitby who knocked-out the defending champs. Both teams were near or atop the conference standings all season. It only seems fitting they get to face one another again in the conference finals.
Skinny:
The Cubs re-tooling has been well documented throughout the season. Their overall talent and final record closely compare to when the club was one win away from a championship in 2005. With great pitching depth, solid defence and a potent offense they are clicking on all cylinders. While Whitby is more banged up – having just come off a very tough 3 game series with Pickering on Wednesday evening they too have a club with strong defence, offense and pitching. With a 4th consecutive trip to the conference finals Whitby must be prepare to dig deep and pull out all the stops in search of their first trip to the league finals.
Players to Watch For:
Cubs: P Mark Dainty, IF Mick Kurhan, OF/DH Colin Cockburn, IF JP Vittorio, P Shawn Lamb
Chiefs: OF Tristan Beadle, IF Tyler Mitchell,OF Mike Del Fuoco, 1B Dan Alayon,C Jeff Kingdon
X-Factor:
Offence: With the strong pitching on both teams it will be interesting to see how each team generates offense. Both clubs show patience at the plate and have the ability to put the ball in play, but it will take more than that to push across a few runs. While just a few may be enough, it will be the team that can strike first and perhaps often that will increase the likelihood of moving on.
OSBA Championship Finals
Scarborough Dragons vs. Whitby Chiefs
Regular Season Record & Final Standing:
Dragons: 21-4-1; 2nd in conference
Chiefs: 22-3-1; 1st in conference
Overview:
The Dragons look to become the first expansion team since the Burlington Bulls to capture the OSBA Cup in their inaugural season. The Western Conference champions swept the York Diamonds giving them a full week’s worth of rest heading into this series. The Chiefs have advanced to the finals for just the first time in franchise history. They were taken to the limit by the Clarington Cubs with the best of three series concluding on Wednesday. With little rest, Whitby hosts the first two games of this series Sunday night at Iroquois Park starting at 6 pm.
Skinny:
With no cross-over games during the regular season, this year’s championship finals have a greater sense of mystery. These two clubs have never faced one another in any exhibition, pre-season or tournament games. They also both enter the finals with identical 6-2 playoff records.
Players to Watch For:
Dragons: OF Pat Janssen,P Tim March, P Rob Hehir, SS Andy Ryder, C Dev Connelly
Chiefs: OF Mike Del Fuoco, SS Steve Mitchell, P Tristan Beadle, 1B Dan Alayon, 2B Tyler Mitchell
X-Factor:
Advanced Scouting: As mentioned, with no prior playing history between these two teams, members of the Dragons attended the Eastern Conference final on Wednesday to take notes on Clarington and Whitby. While a one game visual could give the Dragons all they need, it would be foolish to think Whitby hasn’t tried their best to gain some details of their own on their opposition. When reviewing both teams’ overall records, team batting averages and pitching stats both teams match-up extremely well on paper. This series could easily go all 5 games. Clearly the outcome will be decided between the white lines but the team best prepared entering this series may be the one with the best scouting report.
Whitby Chiefs Capture First OSBA Cup
Back in 2007, the Whitby Chiefs joined the OSBA helping bring the association to 16 teams. On Saturday, October 5th the Chiefs won their first-ever league championship by defeating the Scarborough Dragons by a final score of 2-1 and took the best of five final in three straight games.
The Dragons who came over to the OSBA after three consecutive championship titles in the SABL had a fantastic season in their own right and the Whitby Chiefs would like to congratulate Adam Johnston and the entire team for their remarkable run in their inaugural season.
The parity across the league demonstrates that most teams are working harder than ever before to improve their respective club - vying for a chance to win a championship. The road to the cup wasn’t easy for Whitby who had three tough Eastern Conference opponents in the Bowmanville Blue Jays, Pickering Pirates (’12 champs) and the Clarington Cubs (’11 champs). All three teams pushed the Chiefs but in the end it was Whitby who found a way to get the job done on route to a date with the Dragons in the finals.
Tyler Mitchell was named playoff MVP. Delivering key hits and superb defence game in and game out just become the norm for this rookie as the season progressed. Tyler certainly stepped-up against the Dragons by supplying the only homerun of the series and sliding over to shortstop from second base when his older brother Steve packed up and moved to Calgary just days after the first two games were played in Whitby.
While the entire team contributed to the championship title, for one Chiefs player in particular, the wait while long enough was well worth it. Graig Andrew, labelled affectionately by his teammates as Cadillac, was the only remaining member from the inaugural ’07 team to play in enough games to qualify for the playoffs. Graig was the first player added to the team seven years ago so it was only fitting he was the one who was awarded the OSBA Cup on behalf of the Whitby Chiefs.
The Chiefs would like to thank Danielle for all of her time devoted to capturing great photos of the team throughout the season. In addition, the Chiefs would like to thank all of the family members, friends and alumni who came out to cheer on the team on a regular basis. Your on-going support was greatly appreciated. The ball club would also like to thank the umpire group who continue to support the league as well as the media partners who are always willing to help cover the team and the share news about the association. Last but not least, thank you to all of the members of the OSBA for helping make this league competitive and fun – whether it be contributions from the field or at the executive level – the OSBA is simply one of the best at providing baseball at the senior level.
EASTERN CONFERENCE - PREVIEWS

<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->2012 OSBA Champions
PICKERING PIRATES
2012 Record: 16-9-1
Regular Season Standings: 3rd
Playoffs: Won the OSBA Championship
What does 5 less wins in a regular season get you? For some teams it is the difference between making the playoffs and being on the outside looking in. For the Pirates – their first-ever OSBA championship. A club that has been near or atop the conference standings for several years, Pickering started off sluggish but by mid-season kicked things into high gear and never let up until the final out of the playoffs.
Key Losses: N/A
Key Additions: Jared Kwart, Craig Megill, Marc Nolan, Darryl Noble
Players to watch for: Ryan D’Souza, Brad Binns, Will Mariani, Scott Gray, Sydney Saunders
2013 Outlook:The Pirates enter the 2013 season riding high off of their championship in 2012. Avoiding a championship hangover and not becoming complacent will be important in their effort to repeat. The Pirates will have the core team back again in 2014, so expect chemistry to remain strong. However, they are not getting any younger and are slowly finding themselves amongst one of the older teams in the OSBA. Avoiding injuries will be important down the stretch and, hence, managing the pitching staff will be important for head coach - Phil Lacombe. In addition, look for the coaching staff to leverage strong defence, speed, and a balanced and creative offensive attack in 2013.
WHITBY CHIEFS
2012 Record: 17-6-3
Regular Season Finish: 1st
Playoffs: Lost to Pickering in Conference Finals
The Chiefs have become a model of consistency when looking at regular season performance and standing. They’ve also developed a pattern of bowing out in the conference finals – three years running. With several members returning, the Chiefs will also see some of the top players graduating from Whitby’s junior program join the team. Overall depth took a bit of a hit but this club still has a lot of solid pieces in place to remain competitive and compete for the right to represent the conference in the championship finals.
Key Losses: Mike Moorcroft, Adam Tedesco, Matt Kissel, Stephen Harrington
Key Additions: Jake Olynyk, Marc Stanoev, Kyle Smeelen, Tyler Mitchell, Mackenzie Clugston, Mike Del Fuoco
Players to watch for: Preston Wasmund, Tristan Beadle, Ryan Fleming, Dan Alayon, Graig Andrew
2013 Outlook: The veteran leadership lost in Moorcroft and Harrington cannot be put into words. With Harrington’s retirement that leaves just Graig Andrew as the final member of the inagural 2007 team. Tedesco and Kissel – two players who joined the club from junior were part of a young core this team has building around. Thankfully, all team members take pride in managing this club from a personnel perspective and once again chipped-in to find top-notch talent. Healthy pitching depth is a concern heading into opening weekend, but overall, the Chiefs should be a contender in the East.

Port Hope Flyers
2012 Record: 18-8-0
Regular Season Finish: 2nd
Playoffs: Lost to Pickering in Semi Finals
For a club that had mixed players’ reactions about joining the OSBA, the Flyers did extremely well in their first campaign. Finishing just one point behind Whitby in the overall conference standings, the Flyers finished 10 points higher that the now defunct Oshawa A’s – to capture their first division pennant. The Flyers have strong pitching, a balanced attack throughout their line-up and play well defensively – making them a contender once again this season.
Key Losses: Sandy Clark, Andrew Flay
Key Additions: Marc MacDonald, David Elliot, Joel Hallowell
Players to Watch For: Brett Jiggins, Robert McNab, Kyle Maloney, Brad Pickering, Cory Baker
The Flyers are hoping to repeat their success they had in their first season in the OSBA. The Flyers have the majority of the team returning for their 2013 season with the additions of David Elliot, Joel Hallowell and former Flyer Marc MacDonald. Pitching should once again be a strength for the Flyers having Bobby Gilligan, Mike McNaught, Cory Baker and Owen Sharp in the rotation. Flyers offensive will once again be counting on reigning MVP and Silver Slugger winner Brad Pickering, Robert McNab, Ryan Davis and Brett Jiggins.

<!--[endif]-->BROOKLIN DODGERS
2012 Record: 15-11-0
Regular Season Finish: 4th
Playoffs: Lost to Oshawa A’s in ¼ Finals
Brooklin had a nice bounce-back year after failing to make the play-offs in 2011. Led by a strong veteran core, the Dodgers added several players last year in an attempt to give the club some much needed depth. Some familiar faces re-join the club and with a little additional tinkering, Brooklin will once again field one of the more experienced teams in the conference.
Key Losses: Derek Grieve, Darryl Noble, Wayne Feltham, Todd Blair, Jeremy Majoros, John Wesley, Jason Graham, Jon McGillen, Ryan Corey, Mike Cappadocia
Key Additions: KWayne Wickens, Mike Weir, Dan Wilson, Greg Pomroy
Players to watch for: Dan Blea, Sam Grabowski, Mike Desputeaux, Lawrence Thomas, Jeff Canning
2013 Outlook: Despite the additions last year Brooklin has trimmed their roster which could create some issues given some of those members are playing on a part-time basis. This will certianly give other members an opportunity to step-up and carry larger workloads. The Dodgers have done a great job over the years minimzing turnover, but this past off-season appears to be an exception. Nevertheless, look for the Dodgers to be where they were last year – challenging for a top spot within the conference.
Port Hope River Rats
2012 Record: 9-14-3
Regular Season Finish: 6th
Playoffs: Lost to Pickering in ¼ Finals
The River Rats meet and possibly exceeded expectations last summer. The ball club comprised of mostly Junior-aged players with a handful who had graduated did a solid job in their first season at Senior and within the OSBA. Wanting to be competitive, the club delivered. For their efforts, the River Rats were a mid-pack team by season’s end - good enough for 6th – which earned the club a play-off berth and an opportunity to gain post-season experience. While the club was swept by the eventual champions any anyone on the River Rats would tell you they were very pleased with how the season unfolded.
Key Losses: Marc Stanoev,
Key Additions: Ken Harmon
Players to Watch For: Kyle Dekesyer, Jordan Jeans, Nick Stone, Dawson Stone, Brandon Vaters
Outlook 2013: Building on where they left off, the River Rats should try to use their regular season standing as a bench-mark for improvement this summer. Adding a few more wins would be a great step in overall achievement. Plus, if successful, it should also position the club well in an effort to qualify for the play-offs.
OSHAWA TALONS
2012 Record: 9-15-2
Regular Season Finish: 7th
Playoffs: Lost to Port Hope Flyers in 1/4 Finals
The Talons played well enough to make it into the playoffs for the first time in three years. This club has always been competitive but has had challenges of being able to put together hot streaks for long stretches. Historically the team struggles out of the gate and picks it up in the second half. Some unforuntate injuries over the years have also depleted their depth putting management back to the drawing board every off-season. Things may be picking up for the Talons who have been able to acquire a big bat for the middle of their line-up which is something the Talons have needed for a few years.
Key Losses: None
Key Additions: Adam Dupont, Jorges Robles, Hiro Jingyi Su, Cody Leocata, Ryan Colburn, Chris Ricketts
Players to watch for:Steve Embrey, Anthony Cole, Chad Reid
2013 Outlook: Making the playoffs last season should be a huge moral boost for this club. Looking to build on that success, the Talons have upgraded their offence and defence in the offseason, and have strengthened the depth of their pitching staff. Having lost many close games in 2012, it would not take much for the Talons to have a significantly improved record in 2013.
CLARINGTON CUBS
2012 Record:9-15-2
Regular Season Finish:8th
Playoffs: Lost to Whitby in Quarter Final
The Cubs failed to defend their league title and basically suffered from championship hangover all summer. Year over year their record was slightly worse despite qualifying for the playoffs as the 8th seed. In fairness, the Cubs lost some key offesnive players who also were very solid defensively as well. A strong core returns with some major FA acqusitions. The Cubs are the biggest benefactors in the folding of the Oshawa A’s. Mix in some former players returning and some good young talent coming up from Jr and this club leaps up considerably in overall talent and potential.
Key Losses: Dan Wilson, Brennan McNeely,
Key Additions: Mick Kurhan, Mark Dainty, Matt Tosoni, Thomas Fearon, Daniel Cooke, Todd Blair, Wayne Feltham, Brennen Conquer, Todd Van Laere, Colin Cockburn, Justin Recon, Shaun Hall, Rob Watson, Kyle Taylor, Mike Vance
Players to watch for: Mark Dainty, Mick Kurhan, Matt Tosoni, Todd Blair, Colin Cockburn
2013 Outlook: Heavily into fantasy sports, Head Coach/GM Chris Killoran must be all smiles when he sits down to figure out his line-up and pitching rotation. Easily the busiessiest GM in the off-season, the Cubs on paper are a pure juggernaut. Look for them to bust out of the gate this weekend.
Bowmanville Blue Jays
2012 Record: 9-16-1
Regular Season Finish: 9th
Playoffs: Failed to Qualify
A club that appeared to be folding in the off-season when coaches Mike Snider and Jamie Tessier both decided to retire did a great job of dodging some uncontrollable circumstances and re-building on the fly. Mark Salonius stepped in to become the new GM/Head Coach and immediately started working with the returning core to keep the team in operation. Formerly known as the Ajax Indians, the Blue Jays came about when team management found out their home park would be closed this season in preparation of the Pan Am games and had no choice but to relocate. So with change comes excitement and the Blue Jays are looking to push for a playoff spot this season.
Key Losses: Mike Snider, Jamie Tessier, Marc MacDonald, Chris Paelez, Ryan Gordon
Key Additions: Mark Salonius, Jeremy Majoros
Players to watch for: Luke Jenkins, Riley Whelan, Paul Evans, Joe Campa, Jeff Whittle
2013 Outlook: New name, new park, new uniforms, new management, new personnel, new team websie – all adds up to a lot of uncertainty when trying to predict just exactly how the Blue Jays will do this season. Similar to the situation of the Kendal Eagles, the Blue Jays simply need to erase thoughts of last season while drawing from experience. This club will obviously need time to gel and evaluate player performance on-field. They’ve been holding work-outs for a few months but the true test comes from strong competition across the conference. A solid effort with consistency should keep the team in the playoff picture and catch some teams off-guarad along the way.
Kendal Eagles
2012 Record: 8-16-2
Regular Season Finish: 10th
Playoffs: Failed to Qualify
The 2012 season did not go as planned for the Eagles. Coming over from the EOBA with the two Port Hope teams, it was Kendal who failed to get off the ground and plummeted to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. A club with a lot of experience and veteran leadership, Kendal simply did not make the grade – finishing 8 games below .500 in 26 regular season games. With a long off-season the Eagles certainly have had time to let everything sink in. A club that wins games on pitching and defence, a better effort from start to finish will be required if this club wants to reach its goal of making the playoffs.
Key Losses: Chris Stark, Dave Drew
Key Additions: N/A
Players to Watch For: Nick Stacey, Bryan Landry, Phil Cammasulli, Tyson Gimblett, Russell Hunt
Outlook 2013: Looking for positives on a poor inaugural season, Kendal can enter the 2013 campaign knowing things can’t get much worse. Part of their struggles last season may have come from the fact in previous years there was nothing to play for with respect to playoffs and a league championship. Meaning, all the games were essentially for exhibition in preparation for Provincials. Look for the club to play with purpose this season.

Bowmanville Bandits
2012 Record: N/A
Regular Season Finish: N/A
Playoffs: N/A
If you build it, they will come. For the Bandits that was the case. Some hard work went into reaching out to just about anyone and everyone looking for a place to play and the effort paid off. GM/Head Coach Stephen Smith brings an expansion team to Bowmanville with modest expectations and a willingness to build a team from the ground up. After several indoor sessions the team was put together and will look to cut their teeth in what has become a very strong Eastern Conference.
Key Losses: None
Key Additions: N/A
Players to watch for: Mitchell Potok, Adam Hudson
2013 Outlook: The great thing about being a true expansion team is that there is no way of knowing what the team will accomplish. There is no need to place great expectations on the group and many teams will look past the Bandits on the schedule. If the Bandits can sneak in a few wins here and there they could have a shot at making the playoffs.

Peterborough Tigers
2012 Record: N/A
Regular Season Finish: N/A
Playoffs: N/A
Like the Port Hope River Rats last season, the Peterborough Tigers have elected to move their team to the senior ranks despite still having players at the junior age level. Wanting to be part of a group that offered strong competition the Tigers will add another young club full of promise and skill. If this club plays like the River Rats did last season they should have no problem being competitive and well within the playoff picture.
Key Losses: N/A
Key Additions: N/A
Players to watch for: Grant Elson, Cory Barker, Dan Burke, Brad Thompson, Kurtis Borland
2013 Outlook: This club while an expansion franchise certainly knows how to keep the press out of their clubhouse. Not much to report on this Tigers aside from many of them having been together since Mosquito. Team chemistry will not be a problem for the Tigers and they’ll need that plus a strong work ethic should they hope to create some noise at the senior level. Experienced and a history of achievements behind them suggests the Tigers will be just fine and a contender for many years to come.
WESTERN CONFERENCE - PREVIEWS

York Diamonds
Head Coach: Paul Freeman
2012 Standing: 17-7-2 (1st in Western Conference)
# Of Years In OSBA: 4th
# Of Finals Appearances: 1
# Of Championships: 0
Twitter Handle: N/A
Defining Franchise Moment: Winning its first 8 playoff games in 2012 and being up 2-0 in the best of 5 finals, then go on to lose the next 3 straight.
Key Losses: Tsukasa Murakoso, Ernie Morrison, Justin Williams, Nick Guglielmo
Key Additions: Matt Graham, Jamie Parkes, Andrew Greig, Brian Dikdan
Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: York got off to a slow start in 2012, but caught fire in the 2nd half. They carried the hot streak to a 1st place finish in the western conference, before rolling through the Twins, Mets and Majors on its way to the OSBA final. The York Diamonds were within one win of the title last year, but the team is in a state of flux this season. With a high volume of part-time players, the lineup may look different every night and it's anyone’s guess how the on-field product will fare. Lefthander Tsukasa Murakoso returns to Japan, leaving a huge void in the starting rotation
3 Team Goals For 2013:
#3 – A team scouting trip to Japan.
#2 – Stop using an aluminum bat for the pregame infield warm-ups.
#1 – Win 1 more game.

Scarborough Dragons
Head Coach: Adam Johnston
2012 Standing: N/A
# Of Years In OSBA: 1st
# Of Finals Appearances: 0
# Of Championships: 0
Twitter Handle: N/A
Defining Franchise Moment: Being the only OSBA franchise that is nicknamed after a mythological fire breathing creature.
Key Losses: N/A
Key Additions: N/A
Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: The Dragons come into the 2013 OSBA season as an expansion team but they are not your normal expansion team as they are rich in history and championships dating back to 1993. Spending the last 10 years in SABL and winning the last 3 straight championships it was time for a change and a bigger challenge that the Dragons believe they can get from the OSBA teams. The Dragons roster seems to have a well-balanced roster through a mixture of young arms and bats with the ever important veteran leadership. It will be interesting to see how the team adapts to the change from aluminum bats they used in SABL to the wood bat game used in OSBA. Because of this coach Adam Johnston will have to rely less on the power of his team’s bats and try to figure out how to win using more of his team speed and defense. Some people refer to the 2013 edition of the Scarborough Dragons as the most talented squad to have put on the jersey in the team's 20 year history. One former OSBA player recently quoted "The Dragons team has that uncanny ability that when they smell blood they go in for the kill and it's not a matter of IF they will finish you off, it's more of WHEN will they decide to finish you off". With that being said others argue that the youth of the team (average age being 25) will be the team's downfall as they will have to learn how to change their mindset of going from the hunted now to the hunter, which is a totally different approach to the game.
3 Team Goals For 2013:
#3 – Host a team fundraiser by selling its aluminum bats.
#2 – No ejections.
#1 – Have no runners picked off 1st base by a left-handed pitcher during day games when it’s warmer than 24 degrees Celsius.

Vaughan Expos
Head Coach: Jimmy Gonzalez
2012 Standing: 12-14-0 (7th in Western Conference)
# Of Years In OSBA: 4th
# Of Finals Appearances: 0
# Of Championships: 0
Twitter Handle: N/A
Defining Franchise Moment: Its awesome white uniforms.
Key Losses: N/A
Key Additions: N/A
Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: The Expos were playing consistent baseball, and sitting comfortable in a playoff spot, until some roster issues late in the year cost the team some points and all of the momentum they had going into the playoffs. While not knowing of any significant additions or losses for the ’13 season, the Expos have always had a solid mix of pitching and hitting that allows them to be competitive week in and week out.
3 Team Goals For 2013:
#3 – Make sure that the team’s diamond supplier in Vaughan is kept very happy.
#2 – Sell out each home game that’s played at Christie Pitts.
#1 – Remember to declare the two-out catcher rule before each game.

Newmarket Express
Head Coach: Steve Zimmerman
2012 Standing: 14-10-2 (3rd in Western Conference)
# Of Years In OSBA: 12th
# Of Finals Appearances: 1
# Of Championships: 1
Twitter Handle: N/A
Defining Franchise Moment: Winning the 2004 OSBA championship.
Key Losses: Jesse Nakayama, Brent Dufton, Alan Kung, Tim Coburn, Scott Gow, Marc Arsenault
Key Additions: Gbenga Ajasin (OF/P), Vazken Boyrazian (1B), Matt Butler (C/1B), Lloyd Crespi (2B/EH), Marty Patience (DH/1B).
Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: The Express’ strong offense carried them to a division title and 3rd place seed in the west in 2012. The only team in the west with Saturday home games lost in the first round of the playoffs to the expansion Mets. Through the offseason, the Newmarket Express have experienced its highest turnover in recent years, especially within the last month where 4 key players learned they are unable to play this season. These losses will undoubtedly have an impact on this season's performance. After losing the big bats of Scott Gow, Tim Coburn, and Alan Kung, and the steady play of Brent Dufton and Jesse Nakayama, the Express will be in tough to repeat their offensive domination from years past. The only real good news the last month is the addition of Gbenga Ajasin, who will significantly boost the Express offense and will be an added arm on the mound as the #4 starter. The return of Marty Patience is also a boost to the team and will give us some added depth. As usual, the Express lack in pitching, with only John Bethune, Jesse Barker, Steve Zimmermann, and Gbenga Ajasin as starters, and Greg Whelan as the lone reliever, expect many innings from each pitcher as they try to share the workload. With only 15 players on the roster, and Gregory Whelan moving the end of June, commitment is the greatest concern for Coach Zimmermann, who worries any hiccups in injuries or personnel could mean a week-to-week scramble for bodies. Expect some better defense this year with Vazken Boyrazian and John Bethune solidifying the infield, and Steve Reiss and Gbenga Ajasin patrolling the friendly confines of the Fairgrounds outfield. Chemistry is excellent this season, but will team Chemistry and better Defense be enough to balance out the lack of pitching and a less potent lineup? The Express expect to make the playoffs in the 6-8 seed, but will more than likely be in tough against their 1st round opponent.
3 Team Goals For 2013:
#3 – Maintain spotlessly clean dugouts out all times.
#2 – Get its former coach, and legendary OSBA inspirational speaker, Brian Booth out to a game.
#1 – Field 9 guys every week, without having to put Mr. Chan in the outfield.

Forest Glen Giants
Head Coach: Rick Boutillier & Kevin Horton
2012 Standing: 14-9-3 (5th in Western Conference)
# Of Years In OSBA: 8th
# Of Finals Appearances: 0
# Of Championships: 0
Twitter Handle: N/A
Defining Franchise Moment: Getting rid of the black pants after the ’07 season.
Key Losses: Mario Mainelli
Key Additions: Unknown
Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: Another offseason brought another long list of changes for the Giants. Long time head coach, Alan Micolino, has retired; leaving the field duties to player coaches Rick Boutillier and Kevin Horton, with franchise owner Ron Smith still overseeing operations. The Giants have also lost long time pitching ace Mario Mainelli, but the team’s new coaches have been recruiting diligently. Expect another competitive Forest Glen team this summer.
3 Team Goals For 2013:
#3 – Memorize each other’s names by the end of May.
#2 – No forfeits.
#1 – Have a team social event.

Mississauga Majors
Head Coach: Bruce Cooper
2012 Standing: 14-8-4 (2nd in Western Conference)
# Of Years In OSBA: 7th
# Of Finals Appearances: 0
# Of Championships: 0
Twitter Handle: N/A
Defining Franchise Moment: Assistant coach, Ryan McNeil’s, MLB player comparisons on the team website.
Key Losses: N/A
Key Additions: N/A
Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: The 2012 season was arguably the Majors best in its franchise’s OSBA history. Elite pitching carried the team to a 2nd place finish in the western conference and a birth in the conference finals; which it would lose to York. With an almost identical roster returning for the 2013 season, the Majors hope to take the next step, and reach the finals for the first time in franchise history.
3 Team Goals For 2013:
#3 – Make sure to have score sheets, lineup cards and the coaches contact list at all games.
#2 – Have at least one person named Pileggi at every game.
#1 – Win the western conference.

Metro Mets
Head Coach: Vince Novielli
2012 Standing: 9-13-4 (6th in Western Conference)
# Of Years In OSBA: 2
# Of Finals Appearances: 0
# Of Championships: 0
Twitter Handle: @metromets
Defining Franchise Moment: The retirement of the Rodrigues brothers.
Key Losses: David Clark, Nelson Rodrigues, Brian Rodrigues
Key Additions: Sean Difeo, Chris Hastings, Maiker Santana, Chris Novielli
Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: The Mets were a competitive team in its expansion year of 2012. The team won the first playoff series that it ever played in, before getting knocked out by York in the 2ndround. The 2013 Mets are looking forward to the challenge a new year will bring them. After last year’s second round loss to the diamonds, the Mets are looking for more offensive consistency this year; something that was considered its downfall in 2012. This group of Mets are a tight knit group of men who are quickly building team chemistry looking to do some damage this year in the western conference. They have lost a few key players but have added some very nice pieces to the team at the same time. The season cannot start soon enough for this group.
3 Team Goals For 2013:
#3 – Lead all OSBA teams in total Tweets.
#2 – Bring the loudest fans to the All-Star game...again.
#1 – Keep a close eye of for other teams not using the league required ‘ROML’ baseball.

Mississauga (905W) Orioles
Head Coach: Peter Nicolaichuk
2012 Standing: N/A
# Of Years In OSBA: 1st
# Of Finals Appearances: 0
# Of Championships: 0
Twitter Handle: N/A
Defining Franchise Moment: Changing its team name from the Milton Orioles to the Mississauga Orioles to the 905-West Orioles before ever playing a game in the OSBA.
Key Losses: N/A
Key Additions: N/A
Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: As an expansion team for the 2013 season, the Orioles were formed by a small group of players with past OSBA experience who joined forces with another group of players who participated in the OSBA tournament last fall. Small tryouts were held to fill the remaining roster spots, and with the season start around the corner, the Orioles feel they have a club that is ready to compete in OSBA. Returning to the league will be manager/player Peter Nicolaichuk, as well as Dan McGee, and Matt Smith. Expectations are high coming into the season, and look for the team to try to get off to a strong start early in the season to build confidence. Players to watch: Mike Shuryn, Sam Larson, Dominic Blago.
3 Team Goals For 2013:
#3 – Do not change its team name again until at least the next offseason.
#2 – Do not commit any 1st to 3rd balks.
#1 – Make the playoffs.

Mississauga North Tigers
Head Coach: Robert Buckberrough
2012 Standing: N/A
# Of Years In OSBA: 1st
# Of Finals Appearances: 0
# Of Championships: 0
Twitter Handle: N/A
Defining Franchise Moment: Getting into the free coffee and donuts at the league meeting, before the franchise was accepted.
Key Losses: N/A
Key Additions: N/A
Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: As the first expansion team to join the OSBA from the MBA junior loop in six years, the Tigers are by far the youngest team in the OSBA this year. This group is the 3rd different team to assume the ‘Mississauga North Tigers’ name; and it hopes to have more success than the previous two.
3 Team Goals For 2013:
#3 – Sign up for a Twitter account.
#2 – Win more games than the ’08 Tigers.
#1 – Have at least 1 player drafted in the OSBA fantasy pool.

Mississauga Twins
Head Coach: Ken Woodford
2012 Standing: 9-17 (8th in Western Conference)
# Of Years In OSBA: 8th
# Of Finals Appearances: 0
# Of Championships: 0
Twitter Handle: @mswtwins
Defining Franchise Moment: Losing the longest game (17-innings) in OSBA history.
Key Losses: Graeme Ogilvie
Key Additions: N/A
Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: The 2012 Twins got off to the worst start in OSBA history, putting up a 1-13 1st half, before turning thing around with an 8-4 2nd half. This offseason has been much quieter so far than the last for the Twins; when it traded the right to Tom Malyk to the Pickering Pirates for a 3-cycle washing machine. The trade worked out for both clubs, as Malyk won an OSBA championship and the Twins suffered from zero leg infections in 2012. With the season less than a week away from starting, the Twins are still working on finalizing its roster.
3 Team Goals For 2013:
#3 – Get win #2 before July.
#2 – Do not collectively consume 87 beers before a game.
#1 – Mix in a playoff win.

Vaughan Vikings
Head Coach: Morty Fergenbaum
2012 Standing: 16-8-2 (4th in Western Conference)
# Of Years In OSBA: 4th
# Of Finals Appearances: 0
# Of Championships: 0
Twitter Handle: N/A
Defining Franchise Moment: Winning the 2010 OSBA Fall Classic.
Key Losses: N/A
Key Additions: N/A
Summary Of 2012/Outlook For 2013: The Vikings got off to a hot start in 2012, but struggled with a handful of injuries to its pitchers later in the season. The team returns most of its key players for the ’13 season and fully expects to be one of the elite teams in the west again this summer.
3 Team Goals For 2013:
#3 – Make sure that all uniforms are accounted for at the beginning of each game.
#2 – Get Morty or Hersch into a game.
#1 – Stay healthy.
