2021 OSBA Playoff MVP

Mike Mastrangelo was named the MVP for the 2021 OSBA Playoffs

Mike continued his hot batting right into the playoffs batting just under .600.
For the 4 playoff games, he had  4 extra base hits including a home run, 5 rbis and stolen bases at keys points in the games .
Defensively, he anchored the outfield in centre field playing errorless baseball throughout the  four game playoff.

Congratulations Mike!

VAUGHAN VIKINGS win 2021 OSBA CHAMPIONSHIP

YORK DIAMONDS vs. VAUGHAN VIKINGS

Diamonds - 6   Vikings - 10

Vaughan Vikings win 2021 OSBA Championship, going undefeated.

The heavily favoured Vaughan Vikings capped off an outstanding season with a come from behind 10-6 victory over a rejuvenated York Diamonds squad. The Vikings who finished the regular season atop the standings won all four of their playoff games and proved why they were the class of the league this season. The Diamonds struggled throughout the regular season finishing in 7th place, but put together an incredible playoff run that ended up falling a little bit short. The final game, which measured 3 hours and 15 minutes in length was by no means a masterpiece, but both teams grinded out at-bat after at-bat with the Vikings finally prevailing in what was a nailbiter for most of the evening.

The pitching matchup was a great one, in which one of Vaughan's trio of aces, Emilio Paglia got the start. Playoff stalwart Kevin Horton got the call for the Diamonds, pitching on 3 days rest and also dealing with a torn hamstring. In the first inning, York loaded the bases with one out, but Paglia induced a strikeout and a popup to escape the jam.

Unfortunately, Paglia injured his side after slipping on the mound and had to leave the game in the top of the second inning after a leadoff walk to Logan Marshall. Another of the trifecta of aces, Marco Sacilotto took over on the hill. Sacilotto also has been dealing with a severe groin injury and gutted out 3 innings for the Vikings. Marshall stole second then scored after Andrew Greig hit a hard ground ball for an infield single, but the throw to first was offline and allowed Marshall to score from second. In the bottom of the 2nd, three Vikings reached base, but Horton picked off one of the runners and was able to escape without giving up a run.

In the 3rd, the Diamonds added another run to go ahead 2-0 as Rich Freeman doubled and went to a third on a wild pitch before scoring on an Eric Foley groundout. On that play, first baseman Jon Muia made a spectacular diving play which limited the damage and helped to hold the Diamonds from any further scoring. The Vikings came to bat and York self-destructed on defense dropping three popups and throwing in a mental mistake or two for good measure. Vaughan capitalized with a clutch two out double by Ethan Kopel and then Diamond-killer Sam Galloway scored another run with his two-out single. Horton somehow survived all of the mistakes and only allowed two runs. so the game went to the 4th tied at 2.

Sacilotto started off the 4th inning splendidly with 2 strikeouts, but Andrew Greig walked and Fil Vazzano doubled before Dylan James was hit by a pitch. Rich Freeman blasted a double into left that scored a run, but the Diamonds trail runner was thrown out at third base just before the second potential run crossed the plate. The umpires correctly ruled that only one run counted and the Vikings were energized by the great defensive play. Vaughan came to bat and Jon Muia led off with a walk, followed by infield singles by Michael Caicco and Luca Paese as small ball became the order of the inning. Horton then got Kevin Hillsdon to hit into a run scoring fielders choice before striking out the next two hitters, so the see-saw battle was again tied, this time at 3-3.

As the 5th rolled around, Vaughan turned to OSBA's best pitcher this season, Jet Bui. Kevin Horton lined a ball into centre field to start the inning and one out later Eric Foley also singled. Up stepped OSBA's regular season home run and RBI leader, Oz Alvarez. Alvarez slammed a first pitch fastball over the left field fence to give York a 6-3 lead. Bui stiffened and got out of the inning. In the bottom of the frame, the wheels came off for York as Horton reached 114 pitches after three singles in a row from Ethan Kopel, Marlon Piedrahita, and Julian Testani. Andrew Greig came on in relief to try to stem the tide. Sam Galloway walked to force in a run to make it 6-4. After a strikeout, Jon Muia's ground ball to third was thrown wildly to the plate enabling Vaughan to knot things at 6. After a walk, Luca Paese perfectly executed a safety squeeze which the Diamonds again threw past the catcher and 2 runs scored to put the Vikings up 8-6. Greig did well to get the next two outs and keep things close.

In the 6th, Bui quickly dispatched the Diamonds,  Then Julian Testani's two out fly ball to centre field got lost in the fog and resulted in two runs scoring to give Vaughan a commanding 10-6 advantage.

In the top of the 7th, Bui quickly retired the first two hitters before allowing two singles as the Diamonds continued to battle. He then induced a chopper back to the mound, and his underhand flip to first set off a raucous Vikings celebration as they claimed their second league title.

There were many heroes for both teams throughout the playoffs. The Vikings deadly combination of strong pitching, great hitting, and good defense continued to serve them well. The Diamonds rediscovered some of their past magic despite a shortened roster and numerous serious injuries that players tried to play through.

BOWMANVILLE DODGERS 2021 season preview

The Bowmanville Dodgers begin the 2021 OSBA season hoping to carry over their strong play from 2019 in to this new season, that they had hoped would be 2020 but a little bug got in the way of that. So, to capitalize on the strong play, team Manager Rodney Holinaty has worked hard to add some depth to the team’s roster in the hopes it will get them to the next level, the 2021 OSBA Play-ffs.

The first thing to happen was to trim off parts of the roster that just were not clicking and in doing so 4 players were let go, James Farris, Dylan Castillo, Grant Rourke and Michael Doyne.

The team took a blow when the Covid-19 pandemic pushed back the start of the 2021 season and assistant coaches Rob Morris and Andrew Aird decided to take most if not all this season off due to concern for family health and as in Andrew’s case work on the farm. So, the team has promoted Anthony Qaqish and Kyle Mogavero into the coaching ranks to help out with on field duties and to take charge when the Dodgers make the playoffs, as Holinaty will be running the teams annual Fall Classic Tournament which this year will fall on the same weekend as first weekend of the OSBA Play-offs.

In 2020 before the pandemic hit the Dodgers added their first new player from the now defunct Pickering Pirates, Andrew Nauth, a solid addition that will help the Dodgers infield depth. Later in the year, while the team waited to see if there would be a season, they welcomed back long time Dodger Mitch Dunn. There would be no 2020 season, but the Fall Classic tournament did run just on a much smaller scale. At this tournament, the Dodgers found their next addition in Jeremy McQuay, a veteran speedy outfielder that strengthens the team’s depth there.

The team was not done adding yet, with a condensed schedule on the horizon for the 2021 season making sure pitching depth was looked after the Dodgers added Miguel Roque, Chris Zazcek, Derek Allender, Dylan Topham and Victor Nifo. Not stopping there Ryan Allender was added for catching depth and Anthony Elsmore at first base. Finally Jeff Churchill was added to help both in the infield and outfield. All these additions bring the roster to 22 active players.

As previously stated the team has a goal of making the playoffs, which as we all know, once you are there anything can happen, especially in a double-knockout format, so the team will be looking at not only making the playoffs but the hope is to secure a spot in the middle of the pack by the end of the season, in the hopes for a long playoff run in 2021!

VAUGHAN VIKINGS 2021 season preview

The Vaughan Vikings will start the season with an official roster of 19 registered players,

only two that did not play last year. The latter two, Ethan Kopel and Luca Paese, are new to this year’s roster with  Kopel being a Vaughan Junior graduate and Paese returning after a stint in Nevada with a Reno team.

The remaining rostered players will be playing at different times in the schedule as many

are going to be sidelined due to births, marriages and other personal matters.

Players are anxious to get on the field and compete as all previous roster players are due back.

With the two new additions we will be carrying one of are largest Senior rosters ever at 19.

The Vikings will not be hosting the Senior AA Provincials this year  due to the conflict with the OSBA schedule and the unknown of will there be enough teams wanting to participate in a Provincial play down.

CLARINGTON CUBS 2021 season preview

The Clarington Cubs are looking to build off a strong finish to the 2019 season that saw them cruise their way to the East finals only to come up 2 runs short of making the big show.

Even though the 2020 season was a wash. The 1 highlight for the Cubbies in 2020 was being crowned Champions of the Dodgers Fall Classic held in October

Rolling into 2021 the team's roster will feature the same key pieces from over the years.

Subtraction: Mitch Cook (C) from our 2019 roster has moved out west and will be missed.

Addition: Shawn Slemko (P), Mike Welbourne (C), Tristian Wilcocks (P) and Christien Spulnick (INF/OF)

The Cubs plan on participating in the Ontario provincial tournament on labour day weekend, if the tournament runs.

The boys are ready to make noise and hit some tanks!

MISSISSAUGA SW TWINS 2021 season preview

The Mississauga SW Twins are the living embodiment of the word legacy. Twenty years ago, like a phoenix rising from the ashes of the Twin Towers, the core of this team was formed in Junior after the amalgamation of the Clarkson and Erin Mills baseball associations.

A legacy like this leaves behind many timeless and likely unrepeatable performances. In the fifteen years since they first joined the OSBA, the Twins have used less rostered players than some teams have in a single season (just imagine yourself losing a doubleheader to 8.5 players and a case of beer). Playing four games in one day would make your average millennial shrivel up into an anxiety ridden lump but ask the Twins and they'll respond with "what time?".

Now with all that being said, this team is old, and not without questions regarding its future. Can Stu Kingston keep racking up innings? Will Graeme Speck continue to bring absolutely nothing defensively? Mike who's on beers week 1? These questions and more will be answered as this season plays out. However, one thing is for certain, with added pitching depth and some returning faces, 'The Dong Show' is primed to continue its assault on the OSBA record books.

But this legacy deserves a championship, these these men deserve a championship; and an abridged season may very well play into the hands of these wily vets. The 2021 Twins are poised to take a run at the OSBA Cup, and forever etch their names into history.

PORT HOPE FLYERS 2021 season preview

The Port Hope Flyers are very excited to kick off the 2021 OSBA season! Players enthusiasm in the off season and at practice, has been very high!

The Flyers will mix in a couple of new faces this year. Some familiar faces will round out the roster of 18 players. The loss of 3 core Flyers main stays, Tye MacInnis, Hunter Baker and Cory Baker will sorely be missed in the Clubhouse and on the field. Newcomers Nate Belsey, Jared McIvor, Zach Reid and Joe Tanner hope to fill some big shoes left by those 3 vets. Also the return of Port Hope Hall of Famer Brad Dowler, will bring leadership and baseball smarts to the rest of this team.

The 2019 Flyers had a very good season and won alot of games on their offense. Carrying the offense will be returning OSBA All-Stars Bobby GilliganKyle Hogg, Sam Knott and Connor Turland. If the Flyers defense can be consistent,  this team can compete with anyone in this league!

The pitching core will be lead by Bobby Gilligan again this year. But this year he will have more help from the likes of Brendan Tink, Matt Vrooman and Sam Knott. Good Pitching and defense wins games!

Flyers hope to shake off the rust of a year off because of Covid but this team is capable of doing so and having a great season!

MISSISSAUGA ORIOLES 2021 Season Preview

This year the MISSISSAUGA ORIOLES are hoping to build off one of their strongest campaigns in 2019. The Orioles have lost a couple key players in Darryn Renaud and Frank Pirillo but have added 5 players and will welcome the largest roster they have had since their inaugural season.

They have added depth at each position and are hoping that even though it has been a couple years since OSBA play that the strong play they were enjoying before the COVID break will continue. It is not secret that the Orioles have faired well in tournament style playoffs and they hope that with the new playoff format they will continue to be players in the increasingly competitive OSBA field.

The Orioles also are again planning to participate in the Ontario B Provinicial Championships on Labour Day weekend and with any luck will be playing their best baseball heading into the second half of the season!

SCARBOROUGH DRAGONS 2021 season preview

The Scarborough Dragons are recharged and healthy coming out of the Covid-19 break.  This year's roster will consist of 18 players, which is the largest number this team has ever carried going into a season. Backed by the strength of their pitching depth, the Dragons hope to get back into the finals for the upcoming season.

Player Additions: Tim Westlake (IF), Naveen Devanand (SP), Colm Blaney (IF), Matthew Sheasgreen (OF), Alex Colin (OF)

Player Subtractions: Cam Kirby (IF), Victor Chan (C), Sean Difeo (IF), Chris Pelaez (OF)

MARTINGROVE SOX 1st season preview

Prior to the 2020 OSBA season the league welcomed it's newest member the Martingrove Sox, formerly of the GTBL. However their debut would be delayed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

2021 marks a new beginning for the Martingrove Sox as they embark on their inaugural season in the OSBA. Led by Manager/Player Scott Buck who has a core group of returning players, the Sox are anxious to build off a short but positive preseason and begin their time in the OSBA with a bang.

The Sox make their move to the OSBA after a long tenure as a member of the Greater Toronto Baseball League (GTBL). After a strong season in 2018 highlighted by a trip to the GTBL championship, the Sox struggled to recover from a number of key departures in the 2019 season. Since then, their roster has changed dramatically with an influx of young talent at every position looking to make an instant impact and supplement the core group returning from the 2019 team.

As the 2021 season begins, the Sox hope to get offensive contributions from throughout their lineup and slug their way to a playoff spot as they piece things together on the defensive side of the ball. Will the Sox’s youth movement be enough to carry them to the playoffs? Or will the Sox suffer from growing pains as their roster gains experience at the senior level?

YORK DIAMONDS 2021 season preview

The York Diamonds are looking forward to getting back on the field in 2021. Team Manager/player Paul Freeman will be enjoying his 30th season with the York Diamonds, quite the achievement. The team has a core of about 13-14 players and then will use a cast of thousands to fill in where needed. Kevin Horton, Eric Foley, and Steve Correia provide an experienced pitching trio...however depth may prove to be an issue.

Experience is the name of the game for the Diamonds as Rich Freeman, Mark Pereira, Andrew Greig, and Fil Vazzano look to build on solid 2019 seasons. Sydney Saunders also returns and provides a power bat in the middle of the lineup.

The hitting lineup should be solid, but the infield defense may be a bit of a work in progress. The team will be hurt by the absence of third baseman, Tom Argiropoulos, who will miss a good chunk of the season due to injury.

A number of talented veteran players have said they will come out in a part-time role and how often they show up may dictate whether or not the Diamonds can push comfortably towards OSBA's top tier of teams or whether they will be in a battle for a playoff spot.

Will this be the year that Father Time finally catches up to the Diamonds or will the team continue to defy the odds and try to hang with the big boys?

Player Additions: Andrew Needles (OF), Logan Marshall (IF), Oz Alvarez (OF/1B), Kiel Nizich (OF), Denis Hucal (IF/P), Peter Nash (P), Ryan D'Souza (IF), Steve Foley (OF)

Player Subtractions: Marshall Irving (P), Jamie Hatfield (IF), Clint Jeon (OF), Alex Beauvais (IF)

Full steam ahead for the 2021 OSBA season

Well, it’s official the Ontario Senior Baseball Association will have a slightly reduced season in 2021. While regular years have seen OSBA run a 24 to 26 game schedule, this year will be an 18-game schedule. The 11 teams will be lumped into one conference since with the reduced schedule, it will be an unbalanced schedule, with teams from the east only visiting three teams from the west.

The season will officially start on Friday July 10th. The league Season Opener will see the Whitby Chiefs visit the Port Hope Flyers for a doubleheader starting at 12:00pm. The season is scheduled to finish on September 19th.

The 2021 OSBA Playoffs will be a double knockout tournament that will see the top 8 teams battle it out for the 2021 OSBA Cup. The tournament will start on the weekend of September 25th/26th with the first 11 games. The games will be hosted in Vaughan on the first weekend. The teams that remain will then gather in Clarington on the October 2nd/3rd weekend where this year’s OSBA Champion will crowned.

Teams were made aware of the new Baseball Ontario Covid-19 Protocols that all of them will be required to follow.

The other big news at the meeting was the announcement that OSBA had been accepted into the Vintage Baseball Federation of Ontario (VBFO) for the 2021 season. While OSBA will not be having a team in a Vintage league, they do intend to play one or two exhibition games or enter a tournament in the hopes that they will then be able to enter a team in the 33+ Vintage Provincial Championship Tournament. The OSBA Vintage team will be called the OSBA Aces. More info will be coming out soon as the Vintage management team get things organized to get the info out to all the 33+ players in OSBA, so that they can start to build a roster. There will be a ZOOM meeting that interested players will be encouraged to attend. STAY TUNED FOR MORE INFO on this new endeavor.

Starting on July 3rd we will be posting team previews leading up to our Season Opener. So check back often!

OSBA meeting tonight via ZOOM

The OSBA coaches will gather tonight on ZOOM to make the final preparations for the upcoming 2021 season. The schedule has been made and a draft copy has been sent to all the coaches for each of them to give their ok or to make the schedulers aware of any issues/mistakes.

There should also be some significant news about OSBA's move to enter the Vintage level of baseball at the 33+ level.

More news to come after the meeting.

OSBA Executive set for March meeting

This coming Sunday March 28th the OSBA Executive board will again be meeting virtually to discuss and plan the upcoming 2021 season. All coaches are expected to attend. This meeting will more than likely set the tone for the coming season. With such things as bubbles for the regular season, Vintage team discussion, return to Play Protocols and maybe even a few surprises and a surprise guest.

Meeting is scheduled for 10:00am and all OSBA members, coaches and players, are welcome to attend if they so desire. Contact President Pat McEnroe for the zoom link.

Executive to have second meeting for upcoming season

Team Reps will be meeting this coming Sunday February 21st via Zoom to continue making plans for the upcoming 2021 season. Other items on the Agenda include the creation of a league sponsored team to compete in the 33+ Vintage Provincial and National tournaments.

THERE WILL BE A 2021 SEASON

The OSBA Executive met this past weekend to discuss the 2021 season, if there would be one or not. The answer was overwhelmingly in favour of a season taking place this year. All the coaches understood it would be a shortened season but the association will do it's best to schedule an 18 game schedule starting on the July 10th/11th weekend (pending the Province's confirmation that competition can resume in Stage 2 of their reopening plan) and ending on the September 11th/12th weekend with a double knockout playoff format taking place over the last two weekends in September. All 11 teams will be in one large Conference with minimal crossover games between teams from the East and the West. Top 8 teams will make the playoffs.

More news to follow after the associations next meeting near the end of June.
