OSBA starting to get things ready for the upcoming 2023 season
The Ontario Senior Baseball Association will be having it's final league meeting of the year on Wednesday, April 26th as they get things ready for this upcoming 2023 season, which will be it's 22nd season.
Opening Day is set for Saturday, May 6th!
YORK DIAMONDS - 2023 Preview
The York Diamonds had a solid regular season in 2022, beating a number of top teams along the way. However, they could not quite duplicate their playoff success from the 2021 season as they ran out of pitching in the first weekend of the playoff tournament. The team is rebuilding a bit this year with a number of players not returning and some others whose commitment level may be reduced.
York will continue to rely heavily on Veterans Kevin Horton and Eric Foley to carry the pitching load. Others will be expected to step in and fill the void behind them.
The offense will be anchored by Steve Correia and Oz Alvarez.
With so much transition and so many moving parts, it is hard to know what to expect from the Diamonds this season.
Players not returning: Jamie Hatfield, Clint Jeon, Brett Burns, Orion Katayama, Tom Argiropoulos.
Newcomers Brent Fransman (IF/OF/P - South Africa), Andrew Seguin (OF - SABL), Andrew Tissi (OF/P - Vaughan Juniors), Marshall Irving (returns to the team after a few years off), Blake Cross (returns to the team after 4 years off)
Port Hope Flyers 2023 Preview
Flyers finished the 2022 season with some very tough losses. They were walked off by Clearview, 4-3 and then beat in extra innings against Port Dover, 5-4 in the OBA Championships. Flyers then took on soon-to-be league Champs Whitby, losing 2-1 and then losing another close game 4-3 to Markham to be eliminated in the OSBA League Playoffs. It seemed they were just a hit away from changing their fortunes last year.
The 2023 Flyers look to continue to make positive strides as they move closer to the season starting May 6th against the OSBA Finalists, the Milton Orioles. With most of the players returning, they hope to remain at the top of the offensive categories. Lead by OF Kyle Hogg, C/3B Tye MacInnes, 3B/2B Sam Knott and OF Brad Dowler, Flyers will continue to score runs. DH/P Bobby Gilligan returning to the Clean-Up spot after a season long injury, should only add to the offense.
The most improved area on this 2023 Flyers team will be there pitching depth. Flyers added reigning OSBA Pitcher of the Year, Jeremy Middleton from the Clarington Cubs and one-time Flyers Workhorse, Mike McNaught returning from retirement in the best shape of his life. Returning pitchers young stud, Tommy Loubser-Munn, Brendan Tink, with veterans Matt Vrooman and Bobby Gilligan rounding out the pitching staff.
The only question mark will be Flyers defense. Can it return to form?
New additions:
P-Jeremy Middleton, P-Mike McNaught, OF-Jason Parker, 3B/OF-Kyle Wadsworth
Key loses:
SS/P-Braydon Longyear, OF-Zac Reid
