CIAgency/Linden Machine Shop: #1 Contenders

July 27, 2010 – 02:45 PM
A poll of the Darlington Co-Ed general managers has revealed an overwhelming favorite for the 2010 league championship. That favorite is the team coached by Jay Simms: CIAgency/Linden Machine Shop (CIA/LMS). CIA/LMS received 13 of the 14 available votes for preseason number one. When asked why he thought his team was going to be so good, coach Jay responded that "considering the returning players from last year, and a couple of new additions joining the team, we just have the talent that no one else can match. We're like the Miami Heat; unbeatable." Coach was so fired up about this upcoming season he started doing cartwheels and handsprings all over the infield, leaving this reporter shocked and amazed.

Good luck to the rest of the teams in the Darlington Co-Ed. You're going to need it.

CIAgency/Linden Machine Shop Win Two

August 1, 2010 – 05:00 PM
CIAgency/Linden Machine Shop won both games of their Sunday afternoon doubleheader, beating some sucky team and another not-as-sucky team. More details to come later (if I feel like it).

CIAgency/Linden Machine Shop Lose

August 8, 2010 – 04:30 PM
So much for undefeated! CIA/LMS ran out of time in their comeback attempt, falling short by 6 runs. Brandon Clore came up big in the game, hitting a grand slam to keep CIA/LMS from being run ruled in the fifth inning. Jay Simms hit an inside the park homerun on basically one foot to further help the comeback, but Crawfordsville Outdoor was a good team with okay defense that will be a worthy opponent once players on CIA/LMS stop dropping like flies due to injuries and can hit more consistently. Defense today for CIA/LMS also wasn't their best effort, so all in all this didn't appear to be the standard effort for this team.

I'm out. It's time to watch the sucky NFL preseason hall of fame game.

CIA/LMS Quarter Season Review

August 10, 2010
The Darlington Coed season is a quarter of the way done for the CIA/LMS squad, with three games under the belt. With a 2-1 record, this team has the potential to win out the rest of the season if injuries do not flair up as they did Sunday. With a week to rest though, this reporter feels the a$$ whooping will resume on Sunday, August 15th. The MVP of the season so far has got to be Richard Smack. His spot-on reporting has been Grammy award winning quality. A close second was Brandon Clore, who hit a grand slam or something I think last week. The LVP has got to be Jason Crum, who with a monstrous 22.34 ERA, has really done wonders for the opposing teams batting average and win column. Nevertheless, Crumbelievable has plenty more games to get that ERA down into a less laughable number. Stay tuned sports fans, this is one exciting team with the potential to hit multiple HR's and open up lots of cans. I'll be back for a mid-season review. Until then, you stay classy San Diego! Or Darlington (is that possible??).

8/15/10 Game Review

August 16, 2010
Harry Mann here for a review of the exciting, edge of your seat, roller coaster action known as CIA/LMS coed softball! The future champions had a great Sunday despite numerous obstacles they had to overcome. First, they had the worst umpire in history calling the action from behind the plate for both games. Second, it was about 99 degrees outside with a 100% chance of it being too hot to play. Third, no-shows and substitutions were the name of the game. Luckily, CIA/LMS was able to overcome these odds and win game 1 8-3 and win game 2 25-10. The first game started out with Coach Jay Simms needing to find a couple of girls due to replacement, but the team played great defense behind pitcher Jason Crum's outstanding performance! Michelle made numerous throw-outs from second base, and Jay Simms made a couple of nice plays in the outfield. Curt Simms also threw out any fools who were foolish enough to EVEN think about goin to 3rd yo! Sorry, this reporter will stop with the gangsta typin. Anywho, the other team apparently forgot to bring good bats or were intimidated with the yellow shirts, but they straight up couldn't hit.

In the second game, a few walks turned into some runs for the heroes, and some bad feelings from the opposing team! With an outstanding 5 RBI performance from Curt Simms and Brandon Clore, and 4 runs scored from Coach Jay Simms, the CIA/LMS championship squad put a smack down on the jabroni's from the other "team." All of this was accomplished with another great pitching effort from pitcher Jason Crum, and all of the girls stepped up the game despite the really hot heat from the sun. DAMN YOU SUN!! was what the coach was quoted as saying after the game (along with DAMN YOU FOOT!!). Despite a week-by-week schedule, the CIA/LMS squad has learned to overcome numerous obstacles and weather to lay the beat down on inferior teams. This reporter thoroughly expects this to continue next Sunday! You stay classy Darlington (except you, Mr. Umpire loser. JEEZ!!).

CIA/LMS Get Two W's in Sunday Doubleheader

CIAgency/Linden Machine Shop won both of their games this afternoon. They scored a lot of runs, played good defense, blah blah blah. The real story was having to watch this team take 12 walks in their second game. Are you kidding me??? To get a walk a hitter has to at least watch 3 pitches. So I had the pleasure of watching these yo-yos take at least 36 pitches. I say at least 36 because it felt more like 100 pitches. I know it's good strategy to take what you're given, and in this case it was crappy pitches, but holy crap I would rather have been reporting on sales at the concession stands than watch the walk-a-thon!!

The B.A. Award of the Week (Bad Ass) goes to Jay Simms for his performance during the first game of the day. He was playing with a hurt right foot and doing a heck of a job out in right centerfield. There were a lot of balls hit to him and he got all of them, including a nifty shoestring grab that reaggravated the injury. The slide into third was also B.A.ish.

The D.A. Award of the Week (Dumb Ass) goes to Curtis Simms for his play in left field during the second game. On a ball hit in between left and left centerfield, he felt the need to yell "you got it" to Chelsey (fill-in) in left center. She of course thought he said "I got it" and didn't catch it, just like anyone else would have done. Good job Curtis; next time try "I'm still deciding whether or not I can catch this ball" and see if you get a better result. I doubt it.

Other insights:
- The grass appeared to be perfectly manicured at approximately 1.50" tall.
- One of the teams to play after CIA/LMS finished their second game was a team filled with ex-jocks from North Montgomery. BJ Schlicher (spelling?), Josh Bronaugh (spelling?), and Brittany Lee were a few people this reporter recognized as being ex-Charger athletes. This will be a tough team to beat, but they only get three homeruns, so solid outfield play and getting their girls out will be the keys to victory (so much for objective reporting, huh?)
- The umpire was overheard telling Curtis Simms that he shouldn't be complaining about an eye level pitch that was called a strike because, and I quote (as all good reporters do), "since you stand back in the box that moves your strike zone back and makes that pitch you saw a strike." I don't know how an eye level pitch becomes a strike just because the batter is back in the box, but I obviously don't have as much of an understanding of the rules as Ace from Ace and Gary.

Until next time,

CIA/LMS Split Doubleheader

August 22, 2010
Notes about the games:

- Brandon continued to live up to the hype of being a contender for the Darlington Co-Ed MVP. He had another HR in game two of the doubleheader (inside the park variety), and drove in 5 runs combined to bring his season total up to 20 RBIs after seven games. He now has 4 homeruns on the season. WOW!!!
- Jay hit a HR too, his being an inside the park on a perfectly hit ball between right and right-center in the first game. Even on a bad foot he made it all the way around the diamond. Way to gut it out #3!
- Who the hell brought that right-center fielder onto the CIA/LMS team? He continued another week of outstanding defense(!) by allowing two lazy popflies to drop into the outfield for hits during game 2. He looked like Ray Charles out there trying to field those. Maybe he'd be better suited manning the concession stand?
- Kirk, on the other hand, way playing gold glove defense during the second game. He kept CIA/LMS in the game by preventing numerous hard hit balls to make it to the outfield and scooping one out of the dirt. And that strikeout to end the game sure didn't look like one. I've never seen a ball bounce so high off the dirt in my life. I guess that's what you get when the umpire had just played on the same team as CIA/LMS's opponent the game before this one started.
- Chelsey played well both games, going 5 for 6 with 4 runs and a RBI. If it wasn't for that hole that popped up in the outfield on a fly ball during game 1 she would have had a spotless day on defense too! I think that sucky #2 out in RC rubbed off on her that play.
- Crum had an outstanding day going 1 for 5 and still refusing to take an automatic double (walk).
- The first opponent of the day was intimidated by the guys at the top of the order after Curt and Brandon started the game by hitting a ball off of the fence, and then Ryan crushed a line drive to left. They played back the rest of the game.
- Curt should work on his speed training. Those 5 triples may look nice, but if you were a little faster they might be 5 homeruns. Just saying!

Until next time,

Poll #2 Results

The Pizza King was recently selected as the favorite place to eat in Darlington. Pizza King received three votes. The runner up was the Gas Station with one vote.

Thanks to those who participated.

CIA/LMS Continue Losing Streak

My preseason favorite to win the Darlington Co-Ed lost their second game in a row today, with their 7th inning rally falling short by two runs. Luck wasn't on CIA/LMS's side today as a ball hit by Brandon Clore over the outfield fence went foul by less than a couple feet. It would have been a three run homerun and put CIA/LMS back in the game. Instead an inning ending double play killed the rally.

Other notes:

- Ryan did a great job out in left field, catching everything and running around all day out there. He even threw a runner out at third for an outfield assist.
- Curt got doubled up at second base in the top of the first inning after walking. He was quoted after the game as saying "I suck." I didn't argue.
- Jason went a perfect three for three on the day, driving in a run and scoring a run. Solid day pitching too, only giving up 9 runs. Hopefully the run support will pick up soon.
- Jay did a great job coaching and keeping the book. CIA/LMS could have used his bat, but without enough girls to play 12 people he took one for the team and sat out. Coach of the Year!
- Mandy played her last game of the year and made it count, going 2 for 3 with one RBI. She was on the wrong side of a play at third, being called out on what appeared to be a very close call. She was quoted after the game as saying "that a-hole third baseman could have dropped the ball and let me be safe, which I was anyway. Stupid fu!@ing umpire; he can go to he#&." (Ok I made up that quote, she didn't say that. But I bet she was thinking it.)
- The grass was so dry it hurt to sit on.

CIA/LMS Down in Dumps - Loses Another

September 19, 2010 – 06:06 PM
After having three weeks off without playing a game, CIA/LMS came out and started slow today, only managing one run in the first two innings. The middle of the game picked up some steam with the team managing four runs over the next two innings but then the wheels fell off the wagon after a bad defensive call by the umpire stopped any momentum that had been built up. A play in which Ryan threw the ball from leftfield to second and clearly got the guy out on a force out by a whole step was called safe by the umpire, who hadn't bothered to move an inch from behind home plate. It would have been the third out of the inning and CIA/LMS would have come up to the plate with some good momentum and only a four or five run deficit. Instead, the next batter drove in two runs and it was pretty much the ball game.

Notes:
- Angela did a great job catching the ball and getting it to the pitcher, Jay. Jay noted after the game that "Angela just gets it...she knows what she is supposed to do, works hard at it, and gets it right. She's a real asset to this team."
- Jay filled in as pitcher and had another good game on the rubber. Although he allowed a couple walks in the beginning, he settled down and held the team to 13 runs (should have been 10 or 11). A lack of offensive support doomed his bid for an undefeated season pitching!
- Ryan looked really pretty performing his crow-hops out in left field. Like Ines Sainz parading through a men's locker room in lingerie, he received some catcalls from his teammates and opponents for his moves. The rocket he threw 20 feet over his cutoff man Brandon, who was standing about 30 feet away, was also impressive. Turn the boosters down on that rocket Ryan!
- Lori recorded the first putout in rightfield all season by catching a ball hit to her early on. You're in the history books Lori, congratulations!
- Brandon continued racking up RBIs by getting four on the day. He also had a solid day at shortstop, even throwing out Josh Bronough at first base. Josh is really fast so it was impressive to see.
- It was disappointing to see the leadoff hitter fail to get an inside the park homerun twice more today. Some may see two more triples as being good; I see them as being a sign of a lack of hard work and commitment to his speed training. Didn't he read my earlier post about needing to work on this??? I've heard rumors he's on the trading block.
- Where's Harry Mann? Did he get fired like all of those other ESPN guys who keep showing their wang to a hot female co-worker or maybe some other sexual harrassment?

Horrific Game

September 19, 2010 – 07:35 PM
The second game ended in forfeit today as the first play of the game provided disastrous results for CIA/LMS. Jay, while pitching the first pitch of the game, dislocated his throwing shoulder. Angela, strained her back bending over to catch the ball behind the plate. The batter hit the ball to Brandon at shortstop, who fielded it and threw it to first; unfortunately he threw it so hard his arm literally came off and went to first base with the ball. Kirk, playing first base, couldn't catch the ball because Brandon's arm hit him in the head and gave him a concussion. Michele ran to get the ball that Kirk couldn't catch but suffered a high ankle sprain when she stepped in a hole left by a mole or something. Lori broke both legs running in from rightfield to backup up Kirk. Apparently a sprinkler head was left up and Lori didn't see it. Curt managed to make it to the ball as the runner was half way to third, but as he went to throw it, his hand got caught on the fence down the first base line and he tore two fingers off. While crying like a baby, he managed to throw the ball left handed to Alysa, who had come in towards the pitchers mound from her third base position. Alysa accidently looked directly into the sun, burning her retinas, and the ball hit her in the face, breaking her nose. She did manage to call time and stop the play, though. Leaving only two remaining players who escaped injury, Ryan and Trisha, it was decided CIA/LMS should forfeit.

Tough loss.

It just came to my attention that my son, little Richard Smack II, erroneously posted a recap of the second game from 9/19. CIA/LMS actually won due to the other team forfeiting. Six teams in total forfeited their game today.

Sorry for any confusion and/or panic. He will be harshly punished.

CIA/LMS Split Doubleheader on Final Day of Regular Season

September 26, 2010 – 07:07 PM
The last two regular season games were played today, with the first game of a doubleheader resulting in a 9-7 defeat for CIAgency/Linden Machine Shop. It was their fourth loss in five games. Much like many other games this season, a last inning rally came up short as the bases were left loaded when the third out was made by CIA/LMS. Due to the diamond the game was played on, the wind was blowing in pretty hard and kept two or three balls hit by Brandon and Curt from not going out of the park.

The second game was against what appeared to be a good team that I don't think played their best game. It may have been due to a previous game of theirs in which their right centerfielder was hit in the face by a fly ball in the outfield and had to go to the hospital. Either way, CIA/LMS dominated the game right from the beginning, with Brandon hitting a monster solo shot over the left center fence and Ryan following it up with a two run blast over the fence to left. Brandon later put the finishing touches to an MVP season by hitting another ball over the fence; he finished 6 for 6 for the game with 4 runs and 5 RBI. Ryan went a perfect 5 for 5 with 5 runs and 4 RBI. Five of the ten players that played this game had at least three hits, with CIA/LMS winning 22-10.

Notes from both games:

- Brandon and Ryan almost killed each other on a short pop out to left field in the first game. Brandon ended up making a great catch with planting his cleats in Ryan's stomach, and nobody got hurt other than that. Ryan was given some Tums and his stomach felt better.
- The other team had some girls that could pound the ball harder than some guys! I saw Crum intensely watching their girls hit and then trying to imitate their swing to figure out how to hit with some power.
- Speaking of Crum, way to showboat down the first base line after hitting it to left, only to realize half way down you should be running to second! You were so impressed that you had learned something from the other team's girls that you were more worried about bragging to your own dugout than running to second or third. You're Crumbelievable!!!
- Michele and Alysa had probably their best days of the year hitting, with Michele going 4 for 9 and Alysa going 6 for 10. Hopefully that will carryover to next year!
- In the first game, Angela had an awesome line drive into the third base/shortstop gap that fell into the outfield for a clean hit. Shevana hit and she gotta hit! Great job all day catching behind the plate too!
- Kirk made some awesome catches at first base during the second game, scooping at least two throws out of the dirt for putouts. He also went 5 for 8 on the day with 4 runs and 3 RBIs.
- Somebody break out the champagne as pokey finally got a homerun this year! Curt finally erased the donut from the HR category by getting an inside the parker in the first game of the doubleheader. It appeared he was actually robbed of another homerun in the second game when a hard hit ball went between the section of the outfield where there wasn't a fence but it's not a foul ball. Multiple eyewitnesses said the ball would have cleared the fence if it had actually went over a section of the fence and not hit the gap, but the umpire ruled it a ground rule double as he probably should have. The umpire is a d-bag though so who knows how it could have been called.

Well it was a great year this year, even if CIA/LMS didn't meet any of my lofty preseason expectations. I'll chalk it up to injuries, uncertainty with the lineup at times, and that weird three week layoff towards the end of the season as the reason this team didn't go 10-2 or 9-3 as expected. 7-5 isn't bad and maybe next year CIA/LMS will dominate like they did in the second game today!!

Stay tuned for my end of the year Darlington Co-ed Awards.

2010 Darlington Co-ed Awards

September 27, 2010 – 07:08 PM
Richard Smack here with the official 2010 Darlington Co-ed Awards.

MVP:
SS Brandon Clore
- His final stats are as follows:
.780 avg (1st on team)
9 HRs (1st)
34 RBI (1st)
24 runs (1st)
13 doubles (1st)
74 total bases (1st)
.750 onbase % (1st)
1.805 slugging % (1st)
- Although his throws from short to first could be erratic at times, he played great defense all year at one of the most important defensive positions. There were numerous highlight reel plays, including holding into the ball after barrel rolling over Ryan in left field during the second to last game of the season.
- The 34 RBIs are twice as many as the second leading player on the team, Ryan and Curt with 15 each.
- The 74 total bases are 25 more than second place on the team.
- I can remember at least three clutch hits that kept CIA/LMS into games. They were hits that we had to have and he got them!
- The nine HRs on the team is a record that probably won't be broken for a long time, if ever, unless increased by Brandon himself! Or maybe Jay if he gets to play a full season!

Cy Young:
P Jason Crum
- Final stats:
4-4 record
12.78 ERA
27 moans/groans about balls/strikes
52 missed covers at home/third, etc.
- Although a .500 record isn't outstanding, the 12.78 ERA is pretty good considering the run support he often received. For the season, in games CIA/LMS won they averaged 13.14 runs/game. In games they lost, they averaged a measly 6.80 runs/game. So the record is deceiving because the offensive support often times just wasn't there to help Crumbelievable out.

Gold Glove:
1B Kirk Clore
- No defensive stats were kept, this is just based on the observations of this reporter!
- Kirk had a great year scooping the ball out of the dirt on throws to first, and also fielded ground balls and fly balls well too. Whoever said you just looked good out there obviously doesn't know what they're talking about! (I made that up, no one said anything like that!)

Rookie of the Year:
Angela Simms
- Key stats:
.440 avg (7th out of 12 on team, highest among girls)
5 walks (2nd)
.533 onbase % (7th, highest among girls)
- This was her first time ever playing a full season for a softball team. She had filled in for two or three games before for co-ed teams, but not a whole season like this. Great first season Ivana Hit!
- Did a great job at catcher, hustling for the ball anytime it happened to get by her, and made solid throws back to the pitcher, keeping the game moving along at a fast pace which everyone appreciates!
- Improved steadily as the season went on, even recording a line drive to left/left center in the second to last game of the season.

Coach of the Year:
Jay Simms
- For anyone who has been a coach before, you know how hard it can be to be in charge of a team. This year was no different as injuries and the need for substitute players caused Coach Jay to work harder than normal to put a team on the field each week. He also had to deal with not having a schedule until over half of the season was over!
- Coach Jay really put the team first by sitting himself out for three whole games this year so that other players could play. Thanks for the selflessness!
- Jay also made it possible to have these awards due to keeping track of the stats and book each week. He even tracked RBIs, which is no small feat. Assistant coach Zoey was quoted as saying "that motherf$&@er can keep book like no one else. I hate being superzoeyed but he is still a great Dad."
- Guided this team to a winning record despite working with an ever changing lineup and substitute players.

Mental Attitude:
Jay Simms
- As described in the coach of the year award, there was a lot of stress this year, but he still kept a positive attitude and was as cool as the other side of the pillow.
- Jay also had good stats for the year despite playing three less games than everyone else:
.667 avg (3rd on team)
2 HRs (2nd on team)
9 RBI (t-5th)
11 runs (t-5th)
24 total bases (4th)
.704 onbase % (2nd)
1.000 slugging % (4th)

Fill in of the Year:
Lori (sorry I don't know your last name!!)
- I don't have any stats for you specifically but yours are included with the "fillin player" on the stats sheet.
- You made us laugh and were fun to have on the team, plus you filled in for us quite a bit when we needed someone.

Game of the Year:
9/26/10 22-10 CIA/LMS victory to end the season
- The 22 runs scored were the second most the team scored this season, behind the 25 runs scored in a game earlier this season. This game's high score felt more legitimate though because the 25 run game saw our hitters get walked 12 times, so the runs were somewhat due to the suckiness of the other team as much as our skill. With this game the whole team hit well.
- There were 3 homeruns over the fence, 2 by Brandon and 1 by Ryan.
- Everybody got at least one hit, and five players had at least three hits.
- The team scored at least 2 runs in every inning but one.
- The other team scored only 10 runs, 4 of which came in our final inning when we switched Brandon to pitcher and Crum to shortstop (boot!).
- It was a fun game to watch and play and ended the season on a good note.

Reporter of the Year:
Richard Smack
- Final stats:
10 awesome game reports covering 12 games
1 outstanding end of year awards report
- Considering offers to write for Sports Illustrated or USA Today.

Everybody needs to start their offseason conditioning June 1st so I don't have to watch any out of shape bums next year during the 2011 season!

Year End Review/Observations - Harry Mann style

September 27, 2010 – 09:00 PM
What up bitches? Harry Mann here, ready to wrap up the 2010 Coed Softball year at Darlington, IN! I first have to say great job to Richard Smack, he really picked up my slack. Very clever reporting and he was dead on in regards to his reporting. Due to my high profile ESPN job, I couldn't make as many games as this reporter desired, but the $$$ that the worldwide leader of everything pays me more than makes up for it! Haha!

The clear MVP was definitely myself. I mean, I'm awesome. I think someone on the actual team did warrant a co-MVP award, so congrats to Brandon Clore. Nobody can hit defenseless opponents in the elbow like you! Well done sir!!

Rookie of the year had to be Dick Aimes, the guy who runs this league. Clearly, this guy has never ran a league before based on the terrible umpires he hires, the schedule being 4 weeks late, the numerous teams who cancel because he lets them get away with it every year, and the overall lack of organization in the league. Nice guy though!

Cy Young was clearly Jay Simms. That guy just plain got the job done. I mean, not everyone can thrown the ball past the third baseman when they are standing 15 feet away. Well done!

Umpire of the Year can only go to one person: the blind umpire who did numerous games for us and averaged about 3 or 4 terrible calls a game. Not sure his name, but he had a mustache and wore sunglasses all the time. I think his name was Ray Charles. Wait, I just double checked some sources and found out that guy actually has sight in both eyes. Wow, what a toolbag!

Play of the Year was a tougher call. I think it had to be the play where Jason Crum failed to cover home plate 95% of the time. This play happened so many times, ESPN just started calling the Top 10 Plays the Jason Crum Lack of Plays.

Game of the year was a much easier award to figure out, since this guy only showed up for like 4 games. The 22-10 a$$ whooping CIA/LMS put on the well dressed team was classic. The other team had no faith whatsever after Brandon and Ryan Call went deep back to back (almost). You could see the intimidation creep into their brains and they pretty much just said whatever, lets just try to hit HR's all day. Which they failed at that too! NICE!

Here is a direct quote from the coach: "It was a roller coaster of a season, with winning streaks and losing streaks, but thanks to the great team chemistry, it was a fun season also. I'd like to personally thank everyone for playing and doing a great job each week! Go Eagles!"
Not sure who this "Eagles" team is, but I hear they hate Dogs! Especially Pugs. Whateva!

Well, it was a great year with CIA/LMS finishing with a 7-5 record (way to earn 6 of those wins!). Congrats to CIA/LMS for finishing who knows where in the standings (thanks for the updated league standings Dick!). Until next year, s*ck it!
