2012 Season Stats

2012 Season Preview

July 18, 2012

Well it's time to come out of hiding and report the news surrounding the 2012 Darlington Co-Ed League. The season kicks off Sunday, August 12th. I've learned that one significant change for the team for 2012 is that they will be sponsored by The Fountain Trust Company. Fountain Trust paid for the league fee and appears to be a sponsor that could be relied upon for future years as well. Many thanks to Doug Weisheit at Fountain Trust for helping to set them up.

There are two new girls on the co-ed team this year. Holly Miller and Jenni Goodman are going to play full time in 2012. Chelsey McRoberts is also going to play full time this year after playing for the team in 2010. The defensive positions for the girls will have to be sorted out, and a third baseman will have to emerge from one of the girls, but I'm confident somebody will be able to handle the hot corner! Plus Brandon is pretty good at helping out over there.

A ten person lineup will be used in 2012. According to Coach Curt Simms, he wanted to scrap the 12 man lineup in order to give everyone more at bats and a regular defensive position. He also thought writing out a 12 man lineup was really tiring and annoying. "Do you know how much longer it takes to add those two people to the lineup every game?? It's just not worth it," said Coach. This is a fascinating development that will be monitored closely.

What record should fans of The Fountain Trust Company Co-Ed expect this year? I think a five hundred record (6 wins and 6 losses) would be the minimum for this team. If the girls can handle their new defensive positions and can improve their hitting after a down year in 2011 then it would be reasonable to expect a few more wins than 6. The league was pretty competitive last year though so it won't be a cakewalk.

Stay tuned after each game for insightful and witty comments recapping the action from the diamond.

Practice

July 19, 2012

There will be a practice on Sunday, August 5th at 2 pm in Crawfordsville at one of the Elston fields. It's possible the practice could be moved that day from Elston to either Darlington or Milligan Park, but we'll just have to see what fields are open.

Fountain Trust Loses First Game

August 12, 2012

Fountain Trust lost a close one today to Tommy and Christy's team. A two out rally in the final inning came up short after a baserunning error, putting the final score at 10-8. It was a rough day for the bats, with the team hitting only .400 for the game. The guys went 11-15 while the girls struggled to 1-15. It was a typical first game though as there were also numerous errors on defense and an "inconsistent" day pitching for the normally reliable Crumbelievable.

The good news is that Brandon hit for the cycle and the team's shirts are pretty awesome!

Even with the cold bats and errors Fountain Trust still had a chance to win the game in the end, so there's no reason to think things won't turn around quickly. Fountain Trust will not be playing next weekend so they'll have some time to regroup.

Until next time,

Schedule Has Been Posted

August 12, 2012

It may change depending on what Dick does with the team that dropped out.

Harry Mann is here!!

August 26, 2012

Hello everyone!! Harry Mann, Nobel prize winning sports journalist, is back and excited for the new season of coed softball in Darlington. I was unable to cover the first game of the season due to prior engagements but I was lucky enough to see today's games. Game one looked like some of the guys were hungover. After checking with Coach Curt Simms, he had this to say: "Yeah, there was a fantasy football draft last night at Jay's house and a few of the guys drank. A lot. Good times though!" The bats didn't get going until too late, and FTC lost by 3 (or 4, not sure!). Game 2 saw a much better defensive effort despite the bats still not doing much. FTC took on a team that appeared to be some hill jacks, but they actually were very nice and not that bad either! They did have a girl who sounded like a female tennis player giving birth to a bear. #3 (Jay) had a busy day in right center, making a diving catch to rob someone of a hit, along with multiple other catches. I heard that someone on the other team actually asked him if he could sit out so they could hit to right field! But, the catch of the day (year??)was made by Angela Simms. In the sixth inning, one of the guys on the other team hit a line drive to left center. Did that guy get a hit though?? Spoiler alert...NO he didn't because Angela tracked the line drive down and caught it with ease!! Great catch Angela! The ensuing team celebration was a great moment. Another great moment was the final score of 8-4, with FTC on the winning side. This marked the first win of the season, and it surely will not be the last! Big shout out to the girls who showed up today with some great hits! Jenni had some nice hits to right, Holly was killing the ball, and Michelle also was hitting line drives. Despite Mandy not feeling good she toughed it out and even scored a run! Everyone have a great labor day weekend, and see you in two weeks!

Fountain Trust Gets Two More Wins

September 16, 2012

Fountain Trust Company won two games on a perfect day to play some slow pitch softball. The birds were chirping, the wind was blowing slightly, the sun was shining, the grass wasn't dead, and FTC was busy beating the crap out of the T.B.A. team in the first game. This team was horrific; they had an all girl infield and what appeared to be a 12 year old boy out in left field. I don't remember much else from this game other than Brandon hitting a home run over the fence and everybody getting some good exercise running around the bases (23 runs on 23 hits).

The second game was much more competitive as FTC pulled out a win in the bottom of the seventh after being down one run to begin the inning. Holly, Brandon, and Michelle all hit solid singles to load the bases for Kirk, who proceeded to hit a single up the middle to score Holly and Brandon and win the game. Game two MVP honors go to Kirk for the solid performance in the clutch and for going 4 for 4 with 3 RBIs in a game in which only 7 were scored. Brandon also hit another home run over the fence. This one looked like it was going to hit off the top of the fence for a sure triple, but the missle just kept climbing and went over the fence. It was easily the hardest hit ball of the season so far. (This may have actually been the home run that was hit in the first game, but either way, it was awesome).

Some highlights and lowlights for the day:

- Kirk went 8 for 8 with 8 RBIs combined in the two games
- Mandy went 0 for 1 with 5 walks in her six plate appearances. We'll take the high OBP!
- Kirk wasn't in the giving mood in game one. Kirk tried getting a girl on the other team out at second by throwing behind her, even though FTC was destroying them. When asked about the play after the game, Kirk said "Not in My House." He then flexed and walked away.
- Jay made a nice catch of a low line drive. If it would have gotten by him the guy who hit it would have had a triple easily (or worse) since there isn't any backup for the guys in the outfield. Nicely done #3.
- I interviewed the girl who pitched the first game for the other team (T.B.A.):
Richard Smack: Hi.

Angry Girl: (silence)

RS: (clearing throat) So, why did you look so intense out there today?

AG: Did you see my teammates? They are terrible. That one guy out there in left hasn't even hit puberty. My shortstop is more worried about her neon green hair band being perfectly positioned than stopping the effing ball. (spits on ground)

RS: I noticed you have a unique grip when you pitch. It appeared you were palming the ball instead of just holding it with your fingers. This might have been the reason you walked seven people. Where did you learn to throw like that?

AG: Jason Crum taught me.

RS: Well that makes sense. You might find a new teacher.

AG: I've gotta go. I'm going to go punch my catcher for acting like such a d-bag.

RS: Good luck the rest of the season.

AG: (silence)

Until next time,

Amazing!!

Harry Mann here! What a great day of softball it was last Sunday. As my fellow award winning journalist friend said, just a beautiful day at the ball park. The first game saw the good guys just dominate the other "team". The pitcher was horrible, the infield was all girls except the 90 year old at first, and the catcher was the best hitter but was asking for a bat to the face as close to the plate he was catching at. FTC scored 11 runs in the first inning, and resorted to most of the team taking a philosphy of 1 base at a time. This eagle eye reporter noticed one particular player not adopt this policy though. His name...Kirk Clore (and Jay Simms, we'll get to that in a minute). At one point Kirk tried to go home even though time was clearly called by the umpire...and FTC up by like 30 runs. Nice effort Kirk...I'm sure the other team liked it! Jay also had the same mentality...at one point he was seen screaming at Mandy (his wife!!) for not running as hard as he liked. I interviewed Jay after that inning:

HM: Jay, it seemed like...

Jay: Let me interupt you real quick Harry, if you don't mind. I prefer...

HM: I do mind though.

Jay: Shhhhhhhhh

HM: Okay.

Jay: Anyway, I would prefer to be called by my self-titled nickname, Diamond Master. Because I am the master of the diamond!

HM: Interesting. So, Diamond Master, it seemed like you were a little upset that your wife prevented a potential inside the park HR, or at least a triple.

DM: Yeah, you know, I was going all out. We were only up 15 at that point, and I knew we'd run rule them soon. I needed to pad those stats bbbboooooooooyyyyyyyyyyyy.

HM: You know that Mandy was listed on the weekly injury report as Questionable with a bad knee, right?

DM: I forgot about that. Good point I suppose...I will have to be sure to just hit the ball over the fence next time!

HM: That is doubtful.

DM: Excuse me?!?!

HM: Gotta go! Good interview!

FTC did indeed end up winning by run rule in the 3rd or 4th inning with the final score being 23 to 3 or something. And most of those runs were allowed by our relief pitcher, Kirby...aka, Brandon. He is usually a short stop/all around bad ass. We all felt sorry for the other team and wanted them to get a few runs so Kirby pitched the last inning and let them walk a few runs in.

The second game of the day was much closer! Thanks to clutch hitting by Kirk and Michelle and Holly, FTC came back in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 7-6. Brandon hit a HR in both games, including a solo shot in this second game. Brandon was interviewed after the game:

HM: Congratulations on the win! Great job out there!

BC: Who are you?

HM: My name is Harry, and I am a Mann.

BC: Oh okay, you want to fight?

HM: Not really, I hear you take Nitraflex and rumor is you are a trained MMA fighter.

BC: The rumors are true. I'm awesome.

HM: This team has quite the characters eh? How about those 2 HRs today! Impressive!

BC: Yup. I crushed that ball in the first game...cleared the fence by about 100 ft I'd say, wouldn't you?

HM: Yes sir. Looked like 200 ft maybe! Well, do you anticipate hitting any more HRs the rest of the year?

BC: No doubt.

Well, this about wraps up the softball action from Darlington, Indiana. FTC moves to 3-2 on the year. Next up is a 1:30 game against the team that handed FTC their first loss of the year. It is Tommy and Christy's team...lets go FTC, show those mofos who the boss is!

FTC splits the double header

September 23, 2012

Another week, and another exciting week of fast paced coed softball! It was a cool but overall great day for softball. Game 1 was against FTC's friendly arch-rival, Winding Creek Ranch or something like that. Despite some rough hitting and horrendous pitching, FTC had a chance to tie the game up in the last inning but the comeback attempt fell just short. There were some walks that led to runs for the other team, including a play where Kirk threw the ball to the third base coach in order to switch balls. That is fine if time has been called, but alas it had not. I caught up with the Kirkster after the inning:

HM: Hi Kirk, how are you?

KC: I'm doing great...thanks for asking.

HM: Enough of the pleasantries...i noticed you threw the ball away and that allowed a run to score...what up with that??

KC: I blame the third base coach for the other team. He had his glove on!

HM: Um, he always has his glove on.

KC: He looked lonely?

HM: Is that a question or statement?

KC: Okay, listen, what happened is aliens invaded my body and forced my arm to throw the ball away and allowing the other team to score. Nothing I could do about it!

HM: At least that is a plausible explanation! Thanks Kirk! Maybe a tin foil hat will help keep the alien invaders away.

KC: I will look into that fo sure.

Coach Curt made some impressive and crucial catches in left field, even sacrificing his face and safety to make a catch while running full speed into the fence. Well done! Hope that mark it left heals quickly. Holly had a great catch in the outfield, and stopped multiple ground balls. Great job to Holly! She had some nice swings but unfortunately they always found the gloves of the bad guys. I believe the final score was 10-7, and dropped FTC's record to 3-3.

Game two was much better and it saw a historic hitting performance! Jay got the game started with a triple, and that was just the beginning of the rout. A total of six home runs were hit in the game, 3 by Jay, 2 by Brandon, and 1 by Crumlicious. Brandon's HR's were massive bombs hit over the fence, and Jay's and Crum's were obtained by the strenuous task of running around all 4 bases!! Great job to all 3! Coach Curt also had 3 or 4 hits and scored multiple runs. Great performance by the guys, and Lori and Holly played great defense as well! The game MVP will go to Jay...4-4, 3 HR, 7 RBI, and 4 runs scored.

The game was secured, and some of the guys switched defensive positions. Curt did a great job at shortstop, as he cleanly fielded two balls and showed off the laser rocket arm to throw those beeyotches from the other team out. Brandon went to left field and made some nice catches, including a tough one while nearing the outfield fence. Jay pitched and showed Crum how a slow pitch softball should be pitched. He did give up a HR though. Crum responded by dropping a can of corn popup. This nobel prize reporter interviewed Crum after the game:

HM: Crumbelievable, whats poppin my man??

Crum: My belly, thats what!

HM: Word. Would you say that gut contributed to that dropped popup?

Crum: Well, i rarely play outfield you know? I think i am just a little rusty.

HM: Yeah?

Crum: Well, and the sun was in my eyes and i had popcorn in my glove earlier which contributed to the ball sliding out. And i do my best when I'm on my knees.

HM: Oh wow, um, that is weird.

Crum: I hate you guys

FTC ended up run ruling the other team in the fifth inning with Brandon's second HR of the game. Final score was 18-8. A big shout out to the injured Mandy Simms for watching Brandon and Jenni's son so they both could play! True team effort today. The win puts FTC above .500 for the year at 4-3.

Fountain Trust Loses to Arch Nemesis

September 23, 2012

The first game of the doubleheader today against Winding Creek Ranch (Tommy and Christy's team) looked a lot like the first game of the season against these guys: Too many errors and not enough hitting. There was also some questionable umpiring (how was the girl who jumped out of the basepath to avoid Michelle's tag not called out???) and an "erratic" strike zone. I don't think anyone at this points expects world class umpiring at this point though so it really just came down to missed opportunities. I'll give Tommy and Christy's team credit for getting runs when they needed it, but they have yet to play against Fountain Trust at their best.

The second game was not much of a contest as FTC tee'd off on the replacement team. They only had 8 people and chose to have a guy cover left/left center, a girl in center, and a guy in right field. Jay abused the girl in center to the tune of three inside the park home runs, Jason hit the left field line all day and got an inside the parker too, and Brandon hit two over the fence. Looking for some insight on the defensive arrangement of the replacement team, I asked Coach Curt Simms about how he would have set up the defense if he was coaching the other team's defense: "I would have put the guys in left and left center and the girl in right and made FTC hit it to right. But then again I wouldn't have showed up with only eight players. It would have been nice if the guy in left would have tried a little harder for a few of the balls hit out his way too. I would have given him a stern talking to and a pat on the butt." Great insight, thanks Coach.

Here are some highlights from today:

- Curt had an early afternoon snack of the fence during the first game. Someone on Tommy's team hit a ball in foul territory to left field and Curt caught it in full stride about one step from the fence. Without enough room to pull up he ended up slamming into it and hitting his head on one of the metal vertical beams. According to Curt after the game the fence "was yummy."
- Tommy and Christy bickered like an old married couple out there all afternoon. It's the most entertaining part of playing against them.
- Jay put up one of, if not the most, impressive box scores this reporter has seen in his time covering the Darlington Co-Ed league. It came in the second game of the doubleheader and looked like this: 4 for 4 with 4 runs, 7 RBI, three home runs (all inside the park), and a triple. He took home MVP honors for sure.
- Angela had a nice hit over Christy's head in the first game for a single. Way to tag one slugger.
- Michelle continued to hit the ball with authority, going 4 for 6 on the day.
- After switching defensive positions in the fourth inning of the second game while leading comfortably, Crum proceeded to commit an error on the first ball hit to him in right center by letting it bounce off of the end of his glove and fall to the ground. He might not have dropped it if he had used a regular glove instead of the little kid glove he was wearing, but who knows. Maybe next time Griffey!

Until next time,

Fountain Trust Loses in Seventh the First Game, Then Gets Pummeled in Second Game

September 30, 2012

The first game of the doubleheader was against D.F.D. Fountain Trust played good defense through the first five innings despite having to replace Brandon at shortstop. The wheels fell off the bus in the sixth inning though as some throwing errors contributed to D.F.D. scoring six runs to get within one at 10-9. FTC added one run in the top of the seventh, making the score 11-9 with only three outs left. A few circus plays on defense later, however, and the game was tied up with two outs and the winning run standing on third. A weak grounder to the third base side of the pitcher was all she wrote as Crum's throw from the ground wasn't in time and D.F.D. pulled out a miracle comeback. It was brutal to watch.

Not as brutal as the subsequent beatdown FTC received in the second game though. Utz's team hit three home runs over the fence on their way to 15 run ruling FTC. The leadoff hitter, Jay, only had two at bats which is rather pathetic.

All in all it was a bad day for Fountain Trust co-ed softball. The two losses dropped them to 4-5 for the year with three games remaining. One of the three games is going to be a forfeit so there are really two games remaining with FTC having a 5-5 record at this point. Let's hope they win both and can finish 7-5!

Notes from the games:

- Fill-in Dave had a great first game, going 4 for 4 with a home run over the fence, one run, and seven RBIs. Not bad for having not played for a couple years!
- Rikki filled in and played great. She did a good job at third and hit the ball with authority. Nice job picking her up Crum!
- Brandon looked sharp extra hitting in the second game. He had a spiffy polo shirt and dress slacks on after having played in a golf tournament at nearby Rocky Ridge. He still managed to go two for two (without ruining his slacks) and was the only person to get two hits that game.
- Jay suffered a minor setback on his quest to beat the single season run record. He scored two runs in the first game but none in the second, leaving him with 20 runs for the season. The record is 24 so he'll need a good day hitting next week to break it.
- Other records within reach of being broken next weekend:
- Record: 20 singles. Current leader: Kirk with 16
- Record: 13 doubles. Current leader: Brandon with 11
- Record: .786 OBP. Current leader: Kirk with .774
- Record: 1.805 slugging %. Current leader: Brandon with 1.828

Until next time,

2012 Darlington Co-Ed Awards

October 9, 2012

The 2012 Darlington Co-Ed regular season has finally wrapped up. The final weekend of the season saw Fountain Trust needing to make up three games that had been postponed from rain/mismanagement/etc. The game against team #8 was forfeited, Fountain Trust beat Greenlawn Plus in game 1 on 10/7/12, and then the official game against D.F.D. was forfeited. In order to get an eleventh game played, though, Coach Simms arranged a game against Tommy and Christy's team so that they could play a doubleheader. The plan was to only use the stats from the game in the official record book and to disregard the final score since the game had been forfeited. This means Fountain Trust ended up with an official record of 7-5 for the 2012 season. This is their third straight season finishing with a 7-5 record. 7-5 is one game better than the 6-6 record I predicted during the season preview, but the forfeits helped that out a lot!

Once again the Fountain Trust Company had to go through a season long ritual of finding replacement players almost every week. After Chelsey was unable to play it was determined that using a rotation of subs would probably be the easiest way to fill out the roster every week. Luckily for coach Holly Miller was willing and able to easily round up one or two girls to help fill in. Amanda, Judy, Lori, Alysa, Rikki, and Trish were the girls who filled in for FTC during the year. Dave and Jacob filled in for the guys when needed.

Going into the final two games of the year, there were six potential single season records that were at risk of being broken. After all was said and done only three of them were broken:

- Kirk finished with an on-base percentage of .789, breaking the record
set by himself of .786.
- Brandon finished with a slugging percentage of 1.865, breaking the
record he set of 1.805.
- Brandon finished with a batting average of .786, breaking the record
he set of .780.

Some thoughts about the win over Greenlawn and the stats game against Tommy and Christy's team:

- It was cold. Really cold. No snow but it couldn't have been above 50 degrees, and the wind was blowing pretty hard making it feel about 35 at times.
- Holly took a hard hit ground ball in the chin at second base but still had the awareness to pick up the ball and throw out the runner at second. She got her bell rung but hung in there and finished the game. Her ears were ringing at the end of that inning and she had to bat, so she was given the order of DON'T SWING and just look to get a walk so we can get a pinch runner. She was fine one inning later and finished the rest of the day without any issue. She ended up with a mark on her chin from the ball but luckily it didn't bust her chin open!
- Angela had a nice catch to rob Christy of what was thought to be a sure hit by the other team. Little did they know that Mrs. Simms is a beast out there in the outfield!!
- Jay pitched both games and did really well. There were numerous plays where having a little extra speed on the mound turned into outs. Nice job Diamond Master.
- Kirk had a nice stop of a hard hit ground ball in the second game. He proceeded to throw out the baserunner at second, too, and the ball didn't end up in the outfield or on the highway!

On to the awards for the year:

MVP: SS Brandon Clore
- Brandon was first on the team in the following stats categories: Average, hits, doubles, HRs, RBI, total bases, and slugging percentage.
- He finished second on the team in: Runs, triples, and on-base percentage.
- Hit for the cycle once this year.
- Played solid defense as usual.
- Had numerous clutch hits.
- Third straight MVP award.

MVG (Most Valuable Girl): 2B/3B Michelle Montero
- Michelle had a great year hitting the ball. She finished first among the girls in the following categories: Average, doubles, RBI, total bases, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage.
- She finished second in: Runs and hits.
- She had great stats despite missing two games.

Gold Glove: LC Jay Simms
- Brandon and Jay were in the running for this award. Left field just didn't seem to get as much action this year it seemed, as the guys on a lot of teams seem to want to hit up the middle or to right/right-center, so Curt didn't really get a vote. Based on watching every minute of riveting FTC co-ed softball, it seemed that Jay did the most to help prevent runs and make great plays. I believe the Insurance Solutions team even requested he sit the bench after making three or four difficult catches against their guys! What makes his play in the outfield even more amazing is that he never has any backup should his attempt to stop a low line drive fail. Congratulations on your first Gold Glove!

Rookie of the Year: 2B/OF Holly Miller
- Holly joined the team after Angela posted a message on facebook asking if any girls wanted to join our team. She had never played before but from the first practice had a solid swing.
- She finished first among all girls in runs scored and was 5th overall on the team.
- She also had a solid on-base percentage of .476.
- She helped coach out a lot too by rounding up girls to sub for us.
- An offseason spent doing wind sprints and long tosses will help her fly around the bases and throw the ball 200 feet on a rope! It should be exciting to see how she does next year (unless she starts her own team and becomes our opponent!).

Most Improved: LC Jay Simms
- Jay is a two time award winner this year! Holy cow! Shock, awe, and praise is spreading through out the co-ed softball universe! I need to sneak in a few more exclamation marks!!!!!
- The reason for Jay getting the nod over Michelle is that he had career highs in seven stats: Runs, hits, triples, home runs, RBI, total bases, and slugging percentage.
- He finished first in the following categories: Runs and triples. This is even more impressive with a hitter like Brandon on the team!
- He finished second in the following categories: Average, hits, home runs, RBI, total bases, and slugging percentage.
- Had three inside the park home runs in one game!
- In one game produced a box score of 4 for 4 with 4 runs and 7 RBI.
- Was in the running for MVP at one point before Brandon dominated the last few weeks.

That should wrap up the 2012 season for this reporter. There is a tournament this weekend but I will not be providing my normal hard hitting analysis. I'm sure some stats will be kept but that's about it.

Sincerely,

Richard Smack

Year end review/awards

October 10, 2012

What up my fellow Mannerites! Harry Mann here. I had a nice relaxing vacation in Vegas last week, but it was time to get back to work last Sunday. It was the last day of the regular season for the Darlington Co-Ed season. It was cold, windy, and not the best conditions for playing softball. But FTC sucked it up and played through the weather. The first game saw Brandon carry the team to victory. Brandon hit a two run inside the park HR to tie the game 6-6, and then followed that up with another "inside the park" home run to tie the game up 7-7 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh (last) inning. He then proceeded to hit Jay in for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Well done! Holly took a ground ball off the chin that left her a little bloody, but she is tough and finished throwing out the runner at second for a crucial out. Jay pitched a great game, and despite multiple people hitting softballs up the middle, he managed to survive the game. Mandy did a great job catching and clearing off the plate for Jay, who appreciated it! Great job Mandy!! It was a great game.

The second game was just for fun against Tommy and Christy's team. Once again, FTC failed to hit worth crap against this team. Outside of Brandon, nobody seemed to find themself on base much. Jay pitched a good game and FTC lost 4-2. Kirk did make a nice stop at first and threw out the runner at second. Jay failed to cover first for the double play, but after asking Jay about this after the inning he said he was too amazed that "old man" Kirk made that play!

Lets get to the season ending awards:

MVP: Brandon Clore

I won't get into the statistical argument like my other fellow journalist (I'm lazy!). Brandon led the team in numerous categories or was second in most. He was solid at second base and even played in a suit one game.

Runner Up: Jay Simms

Jay led the team in a few categories, and between him and Curt they covered a lot of ground in the outfield. Jay was solid when he pitched and was worthy of MVP consideration.

LVP (Least Valuable Player): Jason Crum

Only Jason can look like he is about to fall over every time he pitches while popping out a lot. Well played!

Runner Up: Lori

She once again no-showed FTC Sunday. Don't count on being asked to play again Lori!

Rookie of the Year: Holly

Her first year playing went very well! She was solid in the #2 batting position, and hit well.

Runner Up: Jenni

Jenni had never played softball before but she always played hard and had a great attitude!

Most Improved: Michelle

Michelle had a down year last year, but came back strong this year!

Runner Up: Angela

Between making sweet catches in the outfield, to smashing the ball to the outfield, Angela improved greatly!

Gold Glove: Jay

At one point, the other team asked Jay if he could sit down so they would have a chance to hit the ball to right field! Well done!

Runner Up: (tie) Brandon Clore and Curt Simms

Both played solid at short and left center, and could be counted on to make solid decisions.

Cy Young: Jay

He looked like he could pitch without falling over, and actually made routine plays on ground balls to the pitcher! Sweet!

Runner Up: Jason

He did, um...show up, and uh, admit he can't pitch any more and didn't want to. Atta boy!

Play of the Year: Curt

Curt made a long sprint to catch a foul ball while crashing face first into the fence in left field. He held on to the ball to record the out while his teammates and the other team looked on in amazement! Great job!

Runner Up: Jay

Had a diving catch to rob some loser of a hit.

Memorable Moment of the Year: Angela

Angela had a guy hit a ball to left center, where Angela was playing defense. As Jay told me later on that game, he thought for sure it was headed to the fence, but he witnessed Angela fearlessly stand her ground and reach up high with her glove and catch the line drive!! All at once the whole FTC jumped for joy! It was a great catch and one that inspired the whole team! Even the other team could tell it was special.

Runner Up: Whole team

It was a great season, between Kirk going 8-8 with a game winning RBI one Sunday, a 23-3 beatdown on some team that didn't deserve to be playing, Brandon hitting 8 HRs, Jay hitting 4 straight inside the park HRs at one point, and all of the girls willing to play anywhere in the field and always giving 100%!

Coach of the Year: Curt

Curt did a great job finding a long term sponsor (even opening up an account with them to get the sponsor!), getting us awesome shirts, and finding us enough players each week. He kept book and updated the website's stats every week. Great job coach!

and finally, the most coveted award of them all:

Journalist of the Year: Harry Mann

Oh my, I had no idea I was nominated!! I am a multiple-time award winning journalist who gives hard hitting interviews and spot-on opinions. I'd like to thank myself, and of course my laptop.

Runner Up: Richard Smack

He is good too...but not nearly as good as this guy! haha!

Well, that wraps up another season of coed softball. It was a weird season, with teams quitting before the season started, crappy weather, and teams forfeiting left and right. But I hear the FTC can't wait until next year!
