KILDONAN CAVALIERS 2021

SEASON START AUG 5TH

Kildonan have their kick off date for the 2021 season and opponent, Interlake Impact.

Due to covid, the season will be a bit different. Only 9 games are played, with the top 4 teams making it into the playoffs.

13 teams in the league opted to not play this season, which made the league juggle some teams around for this season only. Kildonan will be joined by a few D4 teams, Niverville SC, Interlake, and Central Plains S.C.

Nexgen SC was promoted from D4 last year, and the club Winnipeg FC has been replaced by United Punjab SC.

Returning will be MOBB FC, Scorpions,Triumph, & Double Decker FC.

Kildonan has had a lot of turnover in players due to the late start for the season. 4 confirmed new players will be joining, along with 2 players who missed the 2020 season.

Kildonan will be looking to continue the form they had before Covid cut the season short last year.

2020 Recap

As the 2020 year came to an end, Covid is still a big part of society and continues to affect professional and amateur sports.

The Cavs decided against putting in a team for the indoor season, due to the uncertainty of actually being able to play, and if refunds would be granted should the season be cancelled. As of this writing, Indoor has not commenced and looks unlikely to continue with the current ban being extended to late January. The MMSL may make a comment at their annual AGM on Jan. 23rd.

Kildonan was informed that despite the season not being completed, the standings for the teams in the division would determine any promotion.

This was  a big disappointment to say the least with the division being extremely tight with 4 games to play, but the decision was made so the Cavs will once again be competing in Division 3 for the 2021 season.

Considering 2 weeks prior to the season kick off, the team only had 6 returning players, with the rest of the team selected from limited practices and no exhibition games, shows that the right people were chosen for the 2020 squad. The Cavs steadily progressed during the season, despite losing 5 straight. None of those games were blowouts, and the last half of the season saw them unbeaten in 6. Credit to the players who adapted to the system being used, and the commitment to attending practices in the limited time we had.

Further updates will be provided as we get into March and April, to determine what the next steps for soccer, and the team will be.

COVID ends the Cavs season

The Manitoba Soccer Association announced with the recent spikes in Winnipeg, that they would move all activity to Stage 2, which prevents more then 10 people to participate in training for at least 4 weeks.

With that announcement, the MMSL ceased the season for the entire league and it will not be completed.

The Cavs were unbeaten in six, recently tieing Kucame FC 0-0 which saw red cards dealt to each team with 20 mins to go.

The Cavs have gelled really well in the last half of the season and its disappointing that they couldn't finish their last 4 games.

The league hasn't indicated exactly what this will mean for 2021. Kildonan looks to put in an indoor team in the MMSL for winter.

Cavs leave it late to earn the point

Despite starting off well in the first 10 mins, Cavs couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. The Mobb gk went down with an injury on a save and resorted to a backup.

Thinking this would help things, the Cavs couldn't string enough of an attack together and were punished when a speedy Mobb player beat the trap and fired past Phil to get the lead.

2nd half started and 7 mins in, Mobb struck again, a long shot looped into the far post and Phil couldn't reach it in time.

Cavs struggled to put an offense together despite having most of the possession.

80 mins in, a Mobb corner kick had a Mobb player whack Cam along the back of the head which earned him a red card.

Cavs continued to pressure with Mobb dropping deep and defending well to preserve the win.

One of the Cavs tried to break through the backline on a through ball, only to be taken down by the substitute keeper. Ref awarded a penalty and Duane made no mistake.

With 5 mins added to injury time (although more time should have been allotted), the Cavs continued to press. Rewarded with a corner kick in the 95th min, Alejo was "johnny on the spot" at the far post and put in the bouncing ball past a defender and keeper to make it level.  The restart didn't happen as Mobb tried to delay time by hanging onto the ball and as it got to center, the ref blew the whistle.

The Cavs didn't give up to earn the tie, but a bit of disappointment as they should have done better against the last place team.

Cavs start season with a win

Kildonan started the season with a win, 5-3 over Interlake Impact.

Despite being down 3-0, the Cavs got one just before half but went into half time wondering where things went wrong.

Formation change and a never say die attitude lead the Cavs to score 4 goals in the 2nd half, with Felipe getting the hat trick, leading the Cavs to victory.

Next up is Mobb United at Memorial Park, 9:30 pm.

Cavs make it 3 straight

Coming off a great performance for their 5-1 win over Scorpions on Monday, Kildonan started the game attacking and putting Triumph under pressure.

Truimph seemed to want it more and 20 mins in, Triumph was rewarded with the goal ahead goal.

Ben got clipped in the box on a corner kick and Felipe stepped up for the pk. Goalie guessed right and parried Felipe's shot away. On the subsequent corner, Andres delivered a hard curling  cross to the far post that Felipe made no mistake heading it in to tie it up 1-1.

Just before half time, another corner kick produced the 2nd goal, with the ball bouncing in the 6 yd box and Chad on the spot buried it.

Kildonan controlled the 2nd half and benefited from the wind. Felipe got his 2nd and 6th of the season when Dayton sent a low square ball and after rounding the defender buried it in the net.

Next up is MOBB United. The first game of the season was a 4-0 win for the Cavs, and hoping to add another win.

Cavs for the win!

1 goal in either half helped secured the Cavs 2nd win of the season.

The rain started coming down right at kick-off, making the playing conditions challenging. Cavs struck first, with Chad getting his first of the season drilling the shot past the keeper.

Dave got his 2nd of the season with a hard free kick just outside the 18 that was accidently guided in by a Triumph defender to give the Cavs a 2 goal advantage.

Triumph got one back when the Cavs weren't able to clear a bouncing ball in the 18 after a corner kick.

Next up is Scorpions FC on Monday, Sept 7th.

Cavs settle for 1 pt

Cavs earned 1 pt and should have had 3 if not for a questionable PK given to Scorpions late in the 2nd half to tie up the game.

Kildonan suffered from silly errors in the first 5 minutes. Another backpass that couldn't meet Phil but was easy for a Scorpions attacker to run onto and beat phil to open up the scoring.

Duane replied shortly after, receiving a through ball from Daniel and duane beat the keeper far post.

Kildonan controlled possession for most of the game and were rewarded with a free kick outside the box. Duane delicately floated the ball to the far post leaving the keeper no chance and to give the Cavs the lead for the 2nd time this season.

70 minutes a loose ball in the 18 yrd box had a scorpions attacker make the most of it as he fell down in the box, despite no contact from Ahsan.

Despite constant pressure and some near chances, Cavs failed to capitilze on some chances and finished the game tied.

With the sunday game against Double Decker being postponed due to COVID concerns, the Cavs get a much needed rest until Tuesday, Sept. 2nd when they face Triumph FC.

Cavs lose 3rd straight

The Cavs picked themselves up from a disapointing previous game, losing 3-0 to IPAC Ukraine the previous week.

SCM was a quick fast team but failed to put a lot of chances on net. Their first goal was a gift from the Buhler grass.  An ill timed backpass was held up by the long grass at Buhler, allowing the SCM striker to round Phil and easily put the ball in the net.

2nd half the Cavs came out with better passing and more urgency at trying to win the ball back.  A long ball to David playing as forward found his wiggle away from a SCM defender and keeper who both went to the ball at the same time and crashed into each other. David spun away with an empty net in sight and slotted the ball to tie it up.

Same mistake again punished the Cavs with another backpass to Phil, held up by the grass with a SCM striker pouncing on the loose ball. Phil got the ball this time but also the attacker and received a yellow and PK against him for his efforts. SCM kicker sent phil the wrong way to take the lead.

Game remained at 2-1 until the whistle blew. Cavs will be searching for their 2nd win when they play Pescara next week at Buhler.

Duane takes a free kick vs Kucame FC. Cavs went on to lose 2-1.

Cavs start season with a win

The Cavs started off the season on the right foot with a 4-0 win over Mobb United.

14 new players to the roster and just over 3 weeks of training made the match worthwhile as for the most part, the new players were able to gel with the veterans relatively easily.

Unfortunately one of the new signings, Jonathan, was injured within the first 10 minutes and had to be helped off the field. Based on initial assessment from the Dr., he doesn't look like he will return for the season. He will be sorely missed.

Felipe got the first goal of the season, pouncing on a loose ball that went off the underside of the crossbar and out, and made no mistake with the shot in the 6 yard box.

Felipe would add number 2 in the 2nd half, along with Daniel in midfield who contributing a goal in each half.

Next up is Kucame FC, who purchased the Adriatik team spot in D3. Kucame has been successful moving up divisions in the league and now operate at 2nd team in Division 4.
