a few of the 2011 Cardinals have made the cut

CHAMPS!!!!!

to all the players returning next year

Haden, Jaden, Rashaan, Noah, Chandler and Zeke. We are not done yet!!! Let's do it again next year, fellas!!!

a Farewell to all the 12 year olds

We had a great group of 12 year olds this year. I have always said you are only as good as your 12 year olds play. The other kids always look up to those kids.

Darian Roddy- you put so much pressure on yourself this week. I have never seen a kid want IT so bad. You came through when your team needed you like the BIG TIME player that you are with 3 hits in Game 3 including your HR in the top of the 1st and in the bottom of the 6th I was glad the ball was hit to you to send it to extra innings. I knew you had it all along. We had a great 3 seasons together and I look forward to seeing you next year in the dugout helping the younger kids.

Kelian Baker- You came so far in your 3 years with the team. You "BALLED" this year once you accepted your role on the team. You were one of the best hitters on the team and came up big with 2 hits in the 5th and 7th innings of Game 3. Also made a great diving catch in right field. I am glad you were part of the this title team after what happened in the Super Bowl last year. You know I will see you around. I am very proud of you.

Grant Clayton- I told you and your dad when you played in PVAA when you were 10 that if you came back we had a great shot to win a title. Once you got your confidence back and relaxed and only concentrated on hitting and fielding you showed the rest of the league what you could do. I will never forget your HR in Game 2 to win it all. Then in Game 3 you came up HUGE. I didn't put you in the greatest of positions since I kept you off the mound most of the season but you did your job when it counted the most. As I told your dad, you "MANNED UP" big time.

Trevor Bates- There was a reason I had you on the field in the most important innings of the game. I knew you could make a play in the field when needed. That is why you were on the field in the 7th and would've been in the 8th, 9th etc. I am so glad you got to be on this team. This Hooters trip was all your idea back before we played our first game of the playoffs. It was a pleasure having you around the last 2 years and I hope you tell everyone that you are a CHAMPION!!!

Eric Clayton- Last but certainly not least. As I told you in the dugout in the last inning. You need to be proud of yourself. You came further than anyone this year from the first practice to the last game. I am very proud of you. You really came on towards the end of the season at the plate. That is why we kept having you bat because we felt you would put the ball in play and you did that a lot the last few weeks. After losing in the Super Bowl with Rashaan, Kelian, Coach Billy and I last year I am glad you got to be part of this championship.

Cardinals win the Dapper Dan Championship

The Cardinals outlasted the Reds in 7 innings to win the 2011 Dapper Dan Major Division Championship 15-11. The game started rough for the Red Birds with a few more first inning errors and had a 6-1 deficit going into the 3rd inning. Then with 2 outs and Rashaan Haines and Jaden Jessie on base Noah Buzzard hit a ball back to the pitcher and the first baseman got blinded by the sun and both baserunners scored to make it 6-3. Eric Clayton and Chandler Rhodes both got walked before Haden DeHaven had a 3 RBI single to tie the game at 6. Haden then scored on a passed ball to give the Reds Birds a 7-6 lead. The Reds then tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Rashaan Haines led off the 4th with a walk and got to 2nd on a passed ball. Kelian Baker then grounded out to the 2nd baseman to get Rashaan over to 3rd base. Jaden Jessie laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt that scored Rashaan to give us a 8-6 lead. The Reds showed their toughness once again by coming back and scoring 2 in the bottom of the 4th to tie the game at 8. In the top of the 5th, Haden DeHaven was hit by a pitch and scored on a Darian Roddy double. Roddy then scored on a passed ball after a delayed steal of 3rd base. Rashaan Haines doubled to right field and scored on a Kelian Baker single to give us a 11-8 lead. The Reds once again fought back with 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th to make it 11-10 going into the 6th inning. The Red Birds went 1-2-3 in the 6th and went to the field 3 outs away from winning the title. The Reds were not ready for that yet. They scored a run to tie the game and had a man at 2nd with 1 out. Jaden Jessie fielded the ball and threw the base runner out and the runner moved up to 3rd base with 2 outs. The Reds were a passed ball away from the title. The Reds hitter then hit a towering shot to centerfield that Darian Roddy camped under to send the game into extra innings. In the 7th, Haden DeHaven once again reached base, this time on a single followed by a single by Darian Roddy, walks by Grant Clayton and Rashaan Haines and singles by Kelian Baker and Jaden Jessie to give the Cardinals a 15-11 advantage going to the bottom of the 7th. Grant Clayton went to the mound for his 2nd inning in the game and only 4th inning of the season after Haden DeHaven did a great job throwing the first 5 innings. Grant struck out the first 2 batters before inducing a ground ball to Jaden Jessie that Jaden threw over to Haden DeHaven at 1st base to win the title. It was a total team effort. Earlier in the game Trevor Bates reached base on a walk and was on the field when the last out was made. Zeke Roddy rebounded from an injury the day before and showed the best team attitude on the team. The 2011 Cardinals showed a "REFUSED TO LOSE" attitude in winning the championship. No one other than our players, coaches and parents gave us a chance. As the 4th seed in the playoffs we were called underdogs and not good enough to win it. In the end the only thing anyone can call us now is CHAMPIONS!!!!

A Special Thanks to my coaching staff

I really would like to thank my coaching staff for the great job they do in assisting me in managing the team. Without you none of this is possible. You have to have a great coaching staff to win the championship. Billy Stewart, Grant Clayton, Jimmy Washington I thank you all so very much. WE DID IT!!!!

a huge Thank You!!!

I want to thank all the parents for your support all season long. I have been very fortunate over the years to have had such a great group of parents and this year was no different.

Cards make historic comeback to force a game 3

The Cardinals won one for the ages in Game 2 of the Championship Series against the Reds to force a Game 3 scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th to force extra innings before Grant Clayton hit a walkoff HR to right field to win the game. With the score 9-3 going into the bottom of the 6th the Cardinals showed their "refuse to lose" attitude. Haden DeHaven led off the 6th with a triple and Darian Roddy followed with a triple of his own. Grant Clayton then walked before Rashaan Haines hit a shot to center that was caught that scored Roddy. Kelian Baker then reached base on an error by the shortstop, Jaden Jessie and Noah Buzzard walked. The Cards were then down to their last out. Chandler Rhodes stepped to the plate and hit a laser to right that scored 2 that got us within a run. Haden DeHaven came up again in the inning and hit a major league popup that found a spot on the field to land to tie the game. After the 3rd out DeHaven then went to the mound for his first inning of the series and retired the Reds 1-2-3 that opened the doors for us to win with Clayton's opposite field shot to right field to force a Game 3. Grant also added a double earlier in the game which was our only hit of the game before the 6th inning. It was without a doubt the most amazing comeback I have ever seen.

Cards advance to Finals with 8-0 Game 3 win over the A's

The Red Birds continued their hot play in the field and at bat Thursday night in pulling the upset of the #1 seeded Athletics with an 8-0 win in Game 3. The story of the night was the great Cardinal pitching. Haden DeHaven got the start and got in a jam quickly with a double, walk and single to load the bases with no outs. The tide changed right after that. Jaden Jessie fielded a hot shot to 3rd base and threw home to Grant Clayton to get the first out then DeHaven struck out the next 2 batters to get out of the inning with no runs scored. Rashaan Haines then came in to pitch the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings and struck out 3 and walked 2. Rashaan finished the series with 5 innings pitched and allowed ZERO hits. Jaden Jessie then came in to shut the door getting the last 6 outs with the last 2 being by strikeout. The Cardinal pitchers were aided by wonderful defense in the field especially at shortstop and 2nd base where the 10 year old dynamic duo of Noah Buzzard and Chandler Rhodes made play after play up the middle. Noah and Chandler made 7 of the 18 outs in the game in the field. The Red Bird bats continued their hot hitting with a 7 run 3rd inning. In the inning Noah Buzzard walked, Trevor Bates was hit by the pitch, Chandler Rhodes reached on an error on a great bunt, Haden DeHaven doubled and knocked in a run, Grant Clayton hit a sac fly to score DeHaven from 3rd, Rashaan Haines doubled, Kelian Baker reached on an error and Jaden Jessie hit a 2 RBI triple and beat the throw home when the Athletic defender held the ball. Also adding hits in the game were Darian Roddy and Kelian Baker with doubles and Chandler Rhodes with a single. The Cardinals and Reds will meet in Game 1 of the Championship Series on Monday at 7pm, arrival time is 6:20.

Cardinals even series with Athletics 1-1

The Cardinals evened the series with the regular season champion, Athletics, with a 13-3 victory Wednesday night. Haden DeHaven got the start on the mound and pitched 4 great innings allowing only 3 runs and 3 hits. Rashaan Haines came in and finished the game off pitching the final 2 innings while not allowing a hit. The play of the game came in the 4th inning with the Red Birds leading 6-3. The Athletics loaded the bases with no outs and after a strike out got the A's to ground to first basemen Grant Clayton who made a great play then stepped on first base and threw home to Rashaan Haines to tag out the runner. The team then came in to bat in the bottom of the inning and scored 9 runs to push the lead to 12. The Cardinals bats came to life with 13 hits. Leading hitters were Darian Roddy with 3 doubles and 3 RBIs, Haden DeHaven with 3 singles and 2 RBIs, Grant Clayton with 2 singles and 1 RBI, Kelian Baker with a triple and a single and 2 RBIs, Rashaan Haines with a double and a single with 4 RBIs. The coaching staff loved the aggressiveness on the bases and at the plate.

Cardinals finish season 9-5 with 14-11 win over the Dodgers

The Cardinals gave up 8 runs in the bottom of the first on 8 hits by the Dodgers but fought back and won 14-11. Rashaan Haines got the start on the mound and threw strikes but the Dodgers were hitting the ball where we couldn't get to it but none very hard. All 8 hits were singles. Jaden Jessie then came in to pitch the final 5 innings giving up only 1 hit and striking out 10 to get the win. The leading hitter for the Cards accounting for nearly half of the teams hits was Grant Clayton with a triple, 2 doubles and a single and 4 RBIs. Darian Roddy added a triple and a single and 3 runs scored. Kelian Baker had a double and single with 2 RBIs. Eric Clayton had the teams other hit and also reached base on an error and hit by pitch. The team finished the regular season in 4th place with a 9-5 record.

Cardinals clinch playoff spot with 16-6 win over the Phillies

The leading hitter for the Red Birds was Jaden Jessie with a triple and a double. Darian Roddy had a double and single, Eric Clayton came up huge sparking the bottom of the lineup with 2 singles and 3 runs scored along with 2 RBIs. Grant Clayton and Noah Buzzard had RBI singles, Zeke Roddy made a huge catch with the bases loaded in the 2nd in right field and also was walked 3 times and scored the run to end the game, Chandler Rhodes came up big in the field once again and showed his speed on the base paths. Kelian Baker showed 12 year leadership in centerfield and accounted for 3 runs. Getting the win on the mound was Rashaan Haines with 4 innings pitched allowing 2 earned runs, just 3 hits and striking out 4. Jaden Jessie came in and closed the game out in the 5th with 3 strikeouts. The Cardinals will face the Athletics in the semi-finals starting next Tuesday but first have to get by the Dodgers on Thursday to wrap the season up. Game time is 7:30 with arrival time at 7:00.

The Cardinal bats erupt for 18 runs against the Orioles

The leading hitter for the Red Birds was Darian Roddy with a home run, double and single, 3 runs and 7 RBIs. Haden DeHaven had 2 doubles and 2 singles, 5 runs and 4 RBIs, Grant Clayton had 3 singles, 2 runs scored and 4 RBIs. Rashaan Haines had a double and a single and 3 RBIs. Also adding hits was Kelian Baker with a single, Noah Buzzard with 3 runs and 2 singles and Chandler Rhodes with a base hit. Chandler reached base all 4 times and scored 4 runs. 5 Cardinals named to the All-Star team

Congrats to the 5 All-Stars that the team sent to the All-Star game this past weekend. Darian Roddy , Grant Clayton , Kelian Baker , Jaden Jessie and Rashaan Haines all played great and represented the team very well. I am proud of all 5 of you guys!!!

Cards win 5th in a row

The Cards defeated the Dodgers 11-2 to win their 5th game in a row. The bats came alive in this game collecting 8 hits on the night. Leading hitters for the Cards were Darian Roddy with a triple and a double, Grant Clayton with a double and 2 singles, Kelian Baker with 2 singles and Rashaan Haines with a double. Chandler Rhodes and Haden DeHaven each scored runs after being walked. Getting the start on the mound for the Cardinals was Haden DeHaven and he pitched 2 scoreless innings in getting the win and only allowed 1 hit. Rashaan Haines came in in relief and pitched the final 4 innings allowing only 1 hit and striking out 4.

The CARDiac kids pull out another one

In what is becoming a regularity the Cardinals played another close game. This time beating the Pirates 4-3 to take sole possession of fourth place. This marks the 5th game out of 6 that was decided by a run with the other game being tied at 4-4 in the 5th before winning 8-4. Jaden Jessie was the player of the game. Jaden pitched the entire game allowing 3 earned runs, giving up 6 singles and striking out 10. Jaden also had the hit of the game a 2 RBI triple in the bottom of the 5th to give the team a 4-2 lead going to the 6th inning. Jaden gave up 2 quick hits to start the sixth inning to make the score 4-3 with a runner at 3rd but then Jaden came through and struck the next 3 batters out with no passed balls. Also having hits for the Red Birds was Kelian Baker with a double and single, Darian Roddy with a double and Haden DeHaven with a single. The team once again showed lots of heart and poise in a hardfought game. Games like these that are so close oeave no room for error and the team has come through the last 4 games with plays and hits when they were needed. Anytime you win close games it is a total team effort from 1-12. The team returns to action on Thursday with a 5:30 game vs the Dodgers. Arrival time is 4:20.

Cardinals beat Phillies 3-2 in a classic battle

The Cardinals extended their winning streak to 3 with a hardfought 3-2 victory over the Phillies. For the second game in a row it was Grant Clayton scoring on a passed ball with Trevor Bates at the plate in the 6th inning to give the Cardinals the lead. This time the Red Birds had to go to the field in the bottom of the inning to wrap up the win. Jaden Jessie got the start on the mound and pitched 5 innings allowing only 3 hits and striking out 12. Haden DeHaven came on to get the save in the 6th inning by striking out 2 and inducing a pop up to Rashaan Haines behind the plate to end the game. Registering the only 2 hits for the Cards was Darian Roddy with a single and Grant Clayton with an RBI single that scored Roddy in the first inning. Haden DeHaven scored on a delayed steal with the bases loaded and 2 outs to give the Cards their 2nd run of the game. It was another very well played game by the team. The entire coaching staff is very pleased with the team and how they have played. Keep working hard putting time in away from the field and good things will happen. The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday at 7:30 against the Pirates, the team we are tied with for the final playoff spot. This is a huge game for us since they beat us the first time around.

Cardinals win thriller 11-10 over Orioles

The Cardinals won a thriller in the bottom of the 6th 11-10 on a very steamy Tuesday evening at Long Field. The Red Birds came to bat in the 6th only needing a run to win the game and that is exactly what they got with a passed ball that scored Grant Clayton with 2 outs and 2 strikes to Trevor Bates. Trevor was awarded the game ball with his at bat for taking the Orioles ace pitcher deep in the count to get the passed ball that won the game. The Cardinals fought back all game after trailing 6-1 and 10-4 in parts of the game. The big inning came in the 5th down 10-5 the Cards pushed across 5 runs to tie the game going to the 6th. Grant Clayton got the start on the mound but had some control problems and was relieved by Haden DeHaven with no outs in the 2nd inning. Haden then pitched into the 6th allowing only 2 earned runs and 5 hits while striking out 5. Jaden Jessie came on in the 6th with 2 runners on and no outs and shut down the O's efforts in the 6th by striking out 1 and getting 2 groundouts to end the top of the 6th. At the plate the Red Birds accounted for a season high 12 hits. Darian Roddy had a triple (my mistake in newspaper) and 2 RBIs. Jaden Jessie added a single and put the ball in play all 4 at bats. Noah Buzzard had a single and also put the ball in play every at bat. Chandler Rhodes once again had a beautiful bunt single and beat out the throw to 1st. Adding multiple hits on the day were Kelian Baker with a double and a single. Grant Clayton and Haden DeHaven each had 2 singles and 2 RBI's while Rashaan Haines added 2 singles. Another big at bat in the game that would go unnoticed to most was the fielder's choice by Dylan Dignan in which he put the ball in play and the O's pitcher threw the ball home but was unable to get the runner at the plate. The team showed lots of heart coming back from a deficit all game. The only lead the team had all day was when they won the game in the 6th inning. The Cardinals return to action on Thursday against the Phillies with game time at 5:30 and arrival time at 4:50. The game will be broadcast on 1270 am WCBC.

Cardinals pick up first win of the season

The Cardinals picked up their first win of the season on a beautiful Tuesday evening at Long Field with a 8-4 win over the Tigers. Leading the way once again for the Red Birds was the pitching staff. Haden DeHaven went 4 1/3 innings giving up 4 runs (1 unearned) scattering 5 hits and striking out 7. Jaden Jessie came in in relief and pitched the final inning and 2/3rds giving up 2 hits and striking out 2. Also picking up where it left off from the first 2 games was the great Cardinal defense which had its first error of the season but that was the only error for the team in the game. The difference in this game was the bats woke up from their winter hibernation. 2 of our 12 year olds stepped up at the plate. Grant Clayton led the way with a double and a single while scoring 2 runs and knocking another run in. Kelian Baker added 2 singles, a run and 2 RBI's. Also getting in the hit column was Noah Buzzard with a double and Chandler Rhodes with a beautiful bunt single to start the bottom of the 1st. Chandler and Noah also reached base on errors. The Cardinals were aided by 5 Tiger errors which is what happens when you hit the ball hard. Zeke Roddy reached on an error and came all the way around to third with great hustle. Rashaan Haines also reached base on an error and came around to score in the 4 run 4th inning. Jaden Jessie helped his cause with a sacrifice fly that brought in a run. Trevor Bates also came up big in the game with 3 great at bats, 2 of which being walks. Eric Clayton also had a few great at bats and as usual was in the right place at all times backing up throws in left field. Overall it was a team effort in getting our first win of the season. The coaching staff is very pleased so far with our pitching and defense. Hopefully Tuesday night was the start of a big winning streak. The Cardinals return to action Thursday night vs the 3-1 Athletics game time is set of 8pm and will be broadcast by 1270am WCBC. Don't forget pictures at 6:30 at the Mayor's Monument behind the field.

Congrats to former Cardinal, Demetreous Taylor

Demetreous, a freshman outfielder for the Potomac State College baseball team, will join his team in Colorado to play in the College World Series. "Meat" was the heart and soul of our 2005 Championship team. Good luck to Meat and the rest of the Catamounts.

Cardinals lose another 1 run game

The Reds spoiled another gem pitched by Jaden Jessie in beating the Red Birds 2-1 on Thursday. The Cardinals played another well played game in the field but remained in a cold streak at the plate. Jessie pitch all 6 innings, allowing 3 hits, walking 5 and striking out 13. Haden DeHaven had the teams only hit with a single to centerfield in the 3rd inning. Haden also scored the teams only run after being walked in the 1st inning. The team executed a perfect rundown between 3rd base and home in the 6th inning to keep the deficit at 1 run. The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday vs the Tigers. Everyone keep their heads up. We are playing well. We just need to hit the ball better.

Tonight's game has been canceled

Cardinals drop season opener to Bucs 3-2

The Cardinals dropped the season opener to the Pirates 3-2 in a very well played Little League game. Jaden Jessie pitched a great game pitching all 5 innings allowing only 4 hits while striking out 13 and walking none. That was as dominant a performance that you can have without winning the game. The leading hitters for the Red Birds were Grant Clayton with an RBI triple and a run scored, Darian Roddy with 2 base knocks and also scored a run, Rashaan Haines with a bloop single in the 5th and a solid lineout to deep centerfield in the 1st and Chandler Rhodes with a bunt single. Jaden recorded 13 of the 15 outs by strikeout, the other 2 outs made were a groundout recorded 4-3, Chandler Rhodes to Grant Clayton and a popup caught at 3rd base by Haden DeHaven. The coaching staff urges all players to get out on our days off and work on throwing, catching and hitting. That is the best way to get better and it doesn't go unnoticed. The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday at 7:30p at the Dodgers with arrival time at 7pm.

Altoona Curve Trip

We will make our trip to Altoona, Pa on June 15th to see the Altoona Curve take on the New Britain Rock Cats of the Minnesota Twins organization. The cost of the trip is $16 per person and we need at least 30 people to make the trip with us. Each person will receive a free buffet before the game of hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks etc. Each player will run on the field with a member of the Curve and stand with their player during the singing of the National Anthem. We also go to Lakemont Park before the game since it is dollar day at the park. I have made this trip a few times with the team and it is a really great day for everyone.

Welcome to the 2011 Season

I'd like to welcome our 4 newcomers to the team. Noah Buzzard, Chandler Rhodes, Zeke Roddy and Dylan Dignan. I am very excited to have all 4 of these kids on the team for the next few years.
