John R. Mowatt, Jr.

 

Born:  March 31, 1936 in Washington, DC

High School:  Bladensburg HS, Bladensburg, MD

 

Jack Mowatt joined the Greater Washington Softball Umpires Association in 1968.   Through the years, he held the positions of Vice President, Assigning Commissioner and Board of Directors. He worked many league and tournament games in the DC area.  He traveled to umpire in many tournament games leading to ASA National Tournament qualification. In 1975, he worked the ASA Regionals at Patterson Park in Baltimore, including the game between Greenbelt Shell (DC Metro champs) and Ern-Els (MD State champs) for the right to attend the ASA Open National Championship Tournament.

 

In 1982, Jack was appointed Commissioner of the ASA DC Metro Association, holding that position until December 2006 when the DC and Maryland associations merged and he was named Commissioner of the ASA Maryland – DC Association. 

 

In 2008, he hosted the USA Women’s National Softball team on their Tour 4 Beijing at Baysox Stadium in Bowie, drawing the second largest crowd in history.  He is a huge supporter of women’s equal athletic opportunity on the high school level. 

 

Jack was elected into the Metropolitan Washington Slow Pitch Softball Hall of Fame in 1980 as an umpire, the Metropolitan Washington Fast Pitch Hall of Fame as an administrator in 1990 and the ASA National Hall of Fame in 2007.
