Day 2 - On Deck!

Our first day of playoffs saw our #1 and #2 seeds hold serve and come out with reasonably narrow wins.  In my books, if you don't get your +7 its a close enough game.   

Tonight we'll see if we'll get our first upset when #'s 3, 7, 8 and 9 try to win at home against #'s 6, 10, 11 & 12 respectively.   

TUESDAYS GAMES

#6 Dog Catchers (1-0) @ #3 Dusty Cleats (0-1)

This game started as a great defensive struggle. I thing you'll see a lot more high level leather from both of these teams over the next 3 games.  The Dusty Cleats found themselves with the narrowest of leads at 3-2 after four innings.  The Dog Catcher got off the mat and scored 6 in the 5th but that was immediately followed by 5 for the Cleats.  The Dog Catchers would score 4 over the final two innings while giving up zero to the Cleats to give the Dog Catchers a 12-9 win in their opener.  Jamie Allen, Vince Basacchi and Paul Koolhaas were all 3/3 for the Cleats while Skippy was the consummate lead off man for the Dog Cathcers going 4/4 with 3 runs scored!   

NOTE:  After further review, it appears that there was an error on the score sheet and the actual score was 12-7, giving the Dog Catchers a 5 run win.  I have all score sheets should anyone feel the need to verify.  The standings have been updated accordingly.  DD

#10 Tap Masters (0-1) @ #7 Bat Flippers (1-0)

The Bat Flippers showed up early in this one, giving up two in the top of the 1st inning and responding with 4 in the bottom of the inning.  The teams would trade zeros in the 2nd an then the Flippers out scored the champs 2-1 in the 3rd. The wheels came off in the 4th inning with Tap Masters going scoreless and the Flippers counting 7.  That pretty did in the game and the Flippers won 13-6 for the first seven run win of the post-season!  Tim Schrank and Art Sagert both had 3/3 for nights for the Masters & Schrank chipped in 3 runs as well.  Of course Bill Clouthier was 3/3 (I may have called that one) but so was Kevin Moon who has been scorching hot all year.  But the biggest bat was (NOT A ROOKIE) Tom Rigatti who was 3/3 with 3 runs scored!

#11 Twisters (1-0) @ #8 Grisslies (0-1)

A second upset? You bet.  after an innocuous 1-1 first inning the Twisters opened it up with a 7 second to find themselves up 8-2.  The Grisslies weren't the least bit interested in giving up and pulled within 3 at 13-10 after five innings. The Twisters had a 16 - 13 lead going into the Grisslies bottom of the 7th and their first two batters reached base and scored.  Five more batters would come to the plate and the tying run would be left at 3rd and the winning run left at 1st in a hard fought close game.  Make the final 16-15 for the Twisters. The Grisslies had a 4 hit and 3 run performance from both Steve Brooks and Keith Dell.  Mark Clapham was 3/4 with 3 runs for the Twisters. 

#12 Dodge City (0-1) @ #9 Hurtin' Units (1-0)

The underdog Dodge City team found themselves down 7-3 after one and 10-4 after three.  Things looked pretty bleak, but the battled back in the fourth sending 10 people to the plate and scoring 6 runs.  The Hurtin' Units were relentless on this night, never having huge innings but getting 2 and 3 runs more than I can count.  The Hurtin' Units maintained control and escaped with an 18-12 win.  Dodge was led by Darren Ford with 4 hits and 2 runs and Jason Chiovitti who was 4/4 with 2 runs as well. Peter Hollmann was the assassin for the Units going 4/4 with 4 runs scored!
