Amanda Gonzalez a relief for Northern Burlington

EASTAMPTON — A little pressure doesn’t bother Amanda Gonzalez.

A lot of pressure doesn’t either.

The senior pitcher fired three innings in relief of Haylei Archer Wednesday and earned her first win of the season. Megan Berg scored the tying run in the fifth inning and singled in the go-ahead runs in the sixth, as the Northern Burlington softball team defeated Rancocas Valley, 5-4, in their Burlington County Scholastic League Liberty Division meeting.

Gonzalez knew she’d be going in — just not with the score tied.

“I was ready,” she said. “I’ve been doing this for a few years now. I’m always ready to go in and pitch. I know I’m not as fast as Haylei, but I’ve got a good defense behind me and I’m going to be OK as long as I hit my spots.”

Gonzalez allowed four hits over three innings and struck out three.

The Greyhounds (3-2 overall, 2-0 Liberty) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, when Alexa Blue brought a run home with a groundout and Julia Mayernik hit an RBI single.

Northern’s lead stood until the fourth inning. Rancocas Valley pitcher Marissa Vandegrift drew a walk to lead it off and Brianna Burd followed with a single to left field. Emily Challender bunted them over, then Emma Bachman rapped a base hit that cut the Red Devils’ lead to 2-1.

A squeeze bunt by Kaila Mungo brought Burd home, then Bachman scored on a wild pitch to give the Red Devils the lead. “I was happy with the way they kept competing,” Rancocas Valley coach Shelby McIntosh said. “I felt like something clicked today and they fought the while game like they knew it was a big game and they wanted to win.”

The Greyhounds wanted it too, though; Nicole Bondoc led off the fifth with a base hit, but the Red Devils threw her out stealing. Berg followed with an infield hit, then stole second. An RBI single by Blue tied the game.

Northern regained the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth. Riley Gripp stole second after her two-out grounder was misplayed and Nicole Bondoc followed with a hit that moved her to third. Bondoc took second on the tail end of that play, and both runners scored on Berg’s single to the right side of the infield.

“The first one didn’t go very far,” Berg said. “I’ve definitely hit balls harder than that, and the second one — there was a lot more pressure that time. I didn’t hit that one hard either, but I just ran for first as hard as I could. I was surprised (to see both runners had scored), but it felt good.”

The Red Devils (4-4, 1-2) got a leadoff double from Madison Simone in the seventh inning, moved her up with a ground out and brought her home with Shawna Nuss’ sacrifice fly.

Gianna Guerriero followed with a base hit, but Gonzalez induced a ground out that stranded her there.

“I have all the confidence in the world in Amanda,” Northern Burlington coach Tara Corcoran said. “Whatever the situation is, I know she’s going to go in and give us a good effort. And Megan does seem to get into pressure situations a lot, but we have all the confidence in the world in her, too.”
