Northern Burlington captures Liberty crown in 10 innings

MANSFIELD — Haylei Archer felt like she was cleaning up her own mess.

Archer launched a solo home run over the left field fence to force extra innings, then earned the win

In the 10th, when Megan Berg squeezed home Taylor Gooden to finish off Northern Burlington’s 2-1 win over Bordentown in Friday night’s Burlington County Scholastic League Liberty Division finale.

The Greyhounds needed the win to clinch their third straight Liberty title. A loss would have meant a tie with Burlington Township atop the division standings.

A loss looked pretty likely, too, after Archer walked two batters in the seventh inning. Makenza Goleniecki drew a free pass to start it off and moved to second on Annabella Marino’s sacrifice bunt.

After Annabella Pisapia walked, a wild pitch moved the two to second and third, the Brianna Fischer reached on a fielder’s choice, when Archer fielded her comebacker and decided to eat it.

With the bases loaded, Archer — who allowed just four hits over 10 innings and struck out nine — hit Jenna Ryan in the elbow with a pitch.

“I was really frustrated with myself,” Archer said. “Part of me felt like I’d let down my team, but part of me knew that we were going to get it done and we were going to come back, because we never give up. Ever.”

Greyhounds center fielder Nicole Bondoc caught a fly ball for the second out a moment later and fired home to cut down Pisapia and end the inning.

As fate would have it, Archer was scheduled to hit second in the home seventh, and with one out, she worked the count to 3-0. It was pretty much all the Greyhounds could manage off Pisapia, who struck out 15 and allowed just four hits. The junior pitcher was quick to put it aside. She smiled, called for the ball and went back to work.

“It happens. It was a fastball,” Pisapia said. “I was down, 3-0, and she was looking to hit anything, and she hit a fastball. I just know at that point I gave one up and we have to get it back. A smile calms your whole body down.”

Jordan Jackson reached on a two-base error a moment later and Riley Gripp drew a walk. Greyhounds shortstop Alex Walsh followed with a sacrifice that moved them to second and third, but Pisapia induced a fly ball out to strand them.

It stayed 1-1 until the 10th, when the international tiebreaker went into effect.

Gooden went in as a pinch-runner for Alex Walsh, who’d made the last out of the ninth inning. A groundout by Bondoc moved Gooden to third and Megan Berg put down a bunt to bring her home. “It was a great game,” Northern Burlington coach Tara Corcoran said. “The girls never gave up. They brought their A game today. I’m so proud of them all.”

The Scotties had reason to be proud as well. On Thursday they denied Burlington Township a share of the title with a resounding 9-2 win. On Friday, they nearly gifted that same share back to the Falcons.

“We’ve been going with a game plan and just working on it all week at practice,” Pisapia said. “We’ve raised the bar in the past two games, but I still think we have a lot more in us.”
