Fuego Offense Comes to Life

Beverly and Karina close in on a Loudoun player in the Fuego's 5-0 victory

September 29, Chantilly, VA - The Feugo completed a very successful weekend of soccer with a convincing 5-0 victory over the visiting Loudoun Black.

Jazz got the scoring off to an early start when she took a pass along the right side from Carolyn, sort of walked into the zone, and slid a low shot by the stunned goalie.  The goal set the tone of the game, as the Fuego put continuous pressure on the Loudoun defense all afternoon.  Indeed, Sabrine, Aby, Kristen, K-Tran, Carolyn, Rhi, Karina, Amanda and Melissa all had shots on goal in the first half.

Jazz added her second goal of the game about midway through the half, running onto a pass from Kennia via Amanda that she slipped past the diving goalie.  An apparent third goal was waived off moments later when the ref lost sight of the ball, and a clear goal from Kristen was nullified on a questionable offsides call.

The Fuego came out in the second half and picked up right where they left off.  Jazz got loose behind the Loudoun defense on a nifty pass from Sabrine to Amanda and drilled home yet another goal to give her the first hat trick of the season.  Shortly afterwards, Rhi finished off a flurry of shots from Rachel, Sabrine, Frankenball winner Melissa (playing with two sore knees) and Aby when she came streaking in from the left and fired home the rebound to make the score 4-0.

The defense did an outstanding job. Robin and Kennia patrolled the middle of the field, while Morgan, Beverly and Rhi worked the ball up the sidelines to Karina, Carolyn, Kristen and Sabrine, and into K-Tran, Melissa, and Aby in the middle.  Indeed, the defense was so strong that Caroline was called on to make only a couple of routine saves in goal all afternoon.

The Fuego continued to pound the Loudoun keeper with shot after shot.  Rachel got off a couple of terrific blasts, Carolyn had a blast from the right that nearly found the net, Amanda had a great opportunity on another scramble in front, Kristen got loose on a couple of breakaways that nearly resulted in goals, and Rhi caromed one off the side of the net.  Then Rachel sent Jazz up the middle on yet another breakaway, and Jazz closed out the scoring with her fourth goal on the afternoon, making the final 5-0.

The showing on Sunday is all the more impressive given the emotional victory over the Rumble on Saturday.  The Fugeo could have easily stumbled, but they showed no letdown and came away with a big victory.

The Fuego next travel out to Leesburg for what will likely be a spirited rematch with the Loudoun Black.
