Troop Camping Committee,

I highly support this new proposed policy. But there might be activities that warrent waiving these restrictions. The committe might want to propose for the first year that one outing would be permitted to use disposable items. After that activity discuss if disposables where really needed.

I would also like to propose that all glass, aluminum and Type 1 and 2 plastics be collected and recyled.

It might be assumed without saying but the scouts should be instructed to bring the following items in addition to the one previously mentioned:

Mess kit - plate, bowl and cup

I plan on attending the next Parent meeting and will bring up these items. But in case I have a scheduling conflict, I would appreciate my comments being mentioned.

Don,

Thank you for your feedback and comments, they are appreciated.

I'm glad you support the new policy. I can see your point about activities that might warrant waiving these restrictions, but I think that's a bridge we should cross when we get to it.

I also agree that we should promote recycling of plastic glass and aluminum whenever and wherever possible. The immediate problem is finding someone who is willing to step up and take the responsibility of leading this program -at the adult level and at the scout level.

I also agree that mess kit and personal eating utensils should also be a standard piece of scouting equipment at camp outs (it's on the list of required equipment handed out to new scouts and parents when they join the troop), but here again, we need adult leaders to enforce this -which is virtually impossible without parental support. We have also found that scouts are typically very irresponsible with their cooking equipment; many mess kit items end up in the lost and found following camp outs and are rarely recovered. I doubt many parents are going to want to continuously replace equipment such as this -especially when they know there are plates, bowls, cups and silverware in the patrol boxes.

Let's keep the dialogue going...

Marty

Don,

The reason why we do not encourage disposal plates and cups is because of the great amount of garbage that can be produced by a large troop. I believe we went from 4 or 5 large bags of garbage to 1 or 2 bags when the scouts and adults brought re-usable cups and plates.

We only used disposable items during the Show-N-Do campout, due to our cubscout guests. The adults have extra plates for scouts that forget their own.

We live in a very disposal time, we would be showing a good example to minimize landfill.

Think of the high adventure areas like Boundary Waters and Philmont. All the garbage needs to be taken out. Thanks.
