The Bolton Brewers defeated the New Lowell Knights on Sunday, Sept. 16 to claim their fourth consecutive North Dufferin Baseball League championship. The Brewers won game five, 5-0.

Bolton is only the third team in the 83 year old league to win four straight titles matching Creemore (2005-2008) and Shelburne (1957-1960).

To get to game five, the Brewers and Knights met at Bolton on Thursday night for game three of the championship series. Bolton won the contest 8-7. Both teams relied on their pitching staffs, each using three pitchers. The game was tightly fought for sixth and a half innings with New Lowell unable to capitalize in the seventh frame with runners on first and third to take the game or perhaps push the game into extra innings.

Game four was played at Bolton on Saturday afternoon and this time the New Lowell team was able to squeak out a 7-4 win. Bolton started out strong scoring first and keeping the Knights at bay, but some timely hits by New Lowell in the seventh inning allowed them to take the lead and the game.

The final game, on Sunday, was played at the New Lowell diamond with the Brewers, as in each of the series' games, getting out to an early lead scoring a run in the first frame. Bolton scored three more runs in the sixth inning and a final run off a homerun by Brett Chater in the seventh. Bolton's solid defence and pitching held off the Knights for the entire game with New Lowell not plating a run.

Pat Warden pitched for the Brewers, giving up no runs, five hits, one walk and struck out three batters. Steve Baldry threw for the Knights, and over his seven innings allowed five runs, seven hits, walked five batters and struck out four.

Bolton recorded singles from Mike Wallace, Shawn Chalmers, Eric Cirone and Ryan Smith, a pair of singles from John Hutchinson and a homerun by Chater. New Lowell's Baldry, Sean Connor, John Patterson each singled, while Brandon Norrie had a pair of singles.

After the game, NDBL past president Sean Hayward and vice president Rob Wilson presented the championship trophy, the Strother Cup to a crew of Bolton players - Matt Blacklaws, Adam Wallace, Ron Mercer and John Hutchinson.

The Bolton Brewers have a commanding two-game lead over the regular season first place finishers New Lowell Knights in North Dufferin Baseball League championship series play. The Brewers won games one and two over the weekend by scores of 6-4 and 7-4.

Game one of the best of seven series was to be played Saturday afternoon at New Lowell, but rain and wet field conditions pushed the game to Sunday setting up a double header. Both games were played at the Lisle diamond with the Knights as home team.

In game one, Bolton got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and added another two runs in the second frame. Bolton would score the winning run in the fifth inning and add an insurance run off a solo homerun by John Hutchinson in the seventh. New Lowell's first run was scored on a solo homerun by Sean Thompson leading off the fourth frame. The Knights second run was plated in the fifth inning with their final two coming in the sixth. The Brewers won the game 6-4.

Brewers Mike Blackwood pitched four innings for the win. He gave up one run on five hits walked two and struck out two. Mark Horan relieved Blackwood in the fifth frame going one and two-thirds and allowed three runs on two hits and four walks, while striking out three batters. Pat Warden closed the game, pitching one and one-third innings retiring all four Knights he faced. For the Knights, Steve Baldry pitched a complete seven innings, conceding six runs on eight hits and six walks, hit one batsman and recorded six strikeouts.

Hits for the Brewers went to Brett Chater and Mike Wallace with a single each, Pat Warden and Eric Cirone each with two singles, while Shawn Chalmers doubled and Hutchinson hit a homerun. New Lowell hits were recorded by Sean Connor, Todd Patton, Dale Lightheart with singles, Brandon Norrie with a double and Thompson who went three for four with a single, double and homer.

Game two again saw Bolton get out to an early lead, scoring a run in the first frame. However New Lowell answered back and scored four runs in the second inning to go up by three. The four New Lowell runs were all they could muster as Bolton scored four of their own in the fourth inning to take the lead. The Brewers added another two runs in the sixth to win the game 7-4.

Warden pitched a complete game win for the Brewers surrendering four runs on seven hits, four walks and striking out five Knights. Jesse McIntyre started the game for New Lowell and lasted five and two-thirds, allowing all seven runs on 10 hits, walking three batters and striking out one. Allan Brownridge came in relief of McIntyre and logged one walk and one strikeout in the five batters he faced.

Bolton hits were recorded by Chater who singled and doubled, Warden, Mike Wallace, Matt Blacklaws, Adam Wallace with singles and a pair of singles by Hutchinson and Nathan Robinson. The Knights had seven hits including a double and single by Ryan Martin, doubles by Lightheart and Patton, and singles from Baldry, Connor, and Norrie.

Game three of the championship series is set for Thursday night (Sept. 13) at Bolton starting at 7 p.m. Game four will also be played at Bolton on Saturday Sept. 15 with a noon start, while the series returns to New Lowell on Sunday at 2 p.m., if necessary.

Rockers capture 4th Canadian oldtimers championship

August 7, 2012

Dufferin-Simcoe Rockers travelled to Charlottetown, PEI this past weekend and won the Canadian National Oldtimers Baseball championship in the 50+ age category. It was their fourth Canadian championship having won three previous times in the 44+ age group.

The Rockers completed the round robin portion of the tournament with two wins, one tie and one loss. They defeated Scarborough (Ontario) 11-1 and Pleasant Valley (Nova Scotia) 7-6, tied Nova Scotia Monarchs 8-8 and lost to Spring Lake (Alberta) 6-2.

They met Spring Lake once again in the semi-finals, and this time, with superior pitching and flawless defense earned a 3-0 victory, putting them into the finals against their Ontario rivals from Oakville.

The Rockers opened the scoring with one run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. Oakville scored three runs in the bottom of the third, but the Rockers answered quickly with three runs in the top of the fourth to regain the lead 4-3. The Rockers added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning and appeared to have the championship in hand, but a determined Oakville team battled back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score at 5-5 and force extra innings. The game remained tied until the tenth inning when Dufferin-Simcoe finally scored three runs, all of them coming after two outs. Oakville failed to score in the bottom of the inning and the Rockers took the Championship with an 8-5 victory.

The Rockers are a group of local players who played their senior ball in the North Dufferin and South Simcoe baseball leagues. They are already looking forward to defending their title next year when the Championship will be held in Edmonton, Alberta.

Midland tournament washed out

June 25, 2012

An all day drizzle and heavy rains Sunday played havoc at the Midland Indians tournament over the weekend. The consolation and championship games were cancelled after the field conditions deteriorated.

The consolation game featured the Bolton Dodgers and Orangeville AIRFX, but was called with the teams tied at two. Tournament organizers then decided to cancel the championship game between the New Lowell Knights and Bolton Brewers as the rain didn't let up. Bolton and Orangeville and New Lowell and Bolton split the prize money.

Fred Flood of the Indians was disappointed with the outcome. "Unfortunately we couldn't get the consolations done, we couldn't get the championship done, the teams agreed to split the money," said Flood.

"The Consolation was shaping up to be a good finish, 2-2 between Orangeville and Bolton Dodgers, but the heavens opened up on us."

Flood admits Saturday was a perfect day for baseball with all the games played.

The game between the Bolton Brewers and Scarborough Reds stood out for Flood. Bolton went up four nothing in the second inning with Scarborough adding six of their own. In the sixth frame Bolton tied it and followed it up with a Mike Wallace grand slam. Scarborough was unable to mount a comeback and the Brewers took the game 11-7.

The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when Orillia played some strategic baseball to cash in base runners. All four runs were scored when Jeff Skelhorne-Gross and Andrew Warden bunted to get on base, followed by a Mike Fitzgerald single and Kris Allary double and fielder choice by Ryan Ahern.

Orillia recorded seven hits over the game with Skelhorne-Gross and Allary both hitting a single and double. Warden, Fitzgerald and J.D. McGivern had singles.

Barrie mustered only three hits but couldn't take advantage of the seven walks and one hit batter, stranding ten runners on base. Hits went to Jake Morris and Chris Fitzpatrick while Marty Giles doubled.

Orillia's Sean Mills recorded the win allowing no runs, three hits, seven walks, and one hit batter, while fanning nine Angels en route to the victory.

Barrie pitcher Kevin Whittle was on the mound for five innings allowing four runs, seven hits, and three walks. He struck out three Majors. Giles took over from the struggling Whittle in the sixth inning to record the three outs.

The two teams will meet again as they play each other on Tuesday when the Majors hit the road for Barrie.
