The championship series of the North Dufferin Baseball League concluded Saturday afternoon with the Ivy Leafs defeating the Aurora Jays 1-0 in the sixth game.

The final series started September 7 at Ivy with the home team winning game one 2-1. Games two and three were played at Aurora with the Jays winning both games 5-3 and 3-2. The fourth match went to the Leafs at home 8-4 and then won 6-3 on the road in game five.

In game six action both teams started their best on the mound. Brad Grieveson toed the rubber for Ivy while his counterpart Bent Owen threw for the Jays.

Aurora pressured the Leafs for most of the defensive duel. The Jays managed to strand at least one runner in five of seven innings and were unable to capitalise in the sixth frame with the bases loaded.

Ivy scored the lone run in the fifth frame when Mike Kriegizas was walked, the first base runner allowed by Aurora in the game, pushed to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jeremy Uylenbroek and eventually knocked in by a Chad Watters base hit. Ivy held off a late charge from Aurora in both the sixth and seventh innings to win the contest and championship.

Owen pitched a solid outing allowing only three base runners on two hits and one walk and also had three strikeouts.

Grieveson also pitched a complete game, surrendering seven hits, hit one batsman and recorded two strikeouts. At the end of the game, Grieveson was presented the Paul Carruthers Memorial Award for the Most Valuable Player in the playoffs for his pitching efforts by league treasurer Dan Gowan.

Hits in the game went to Jays Ted Beadle with a pair, Chris Rettie who singled and doubled, Fab Dolan, Daniel Lehmkuhl and Stephen Vallee. The Leafs had singles from Chad Watters and Norm Love.

In the post-game presentation, league secretary Scott Anderson commended both teams on their skilful and exciting play throughout the series and presented the Strother Cup to Dave Reid of the Ivy Leafs.

Ivy scored again in the third inning before the Jays recorded two runs in the bottom of the inning to peg the score at 5-2.

The teams settled into the game and each scored once more to make the final 6-3.

Ivy hits went to Gowan with a first inning homerun and Mike Kriegizas who doubled and singled twice. Aurora registered hits from Pinnegar, Lewis, and Brad Crosby; a pair of singles from Bloom, Beadle, and Fab Dolan, while Ian Rettie singled three times in the slug-fest.

Game four was originally to be played Saturday, but moved to Sunday due to rain and wet field conditions at Ivy. The change resulted in Aurora missing a couple key members of their squad for the game.

In the first frame, Ivy swiftly scored five runs, including a three run homerun by Uylenbroek, off of starter Ian Milne. Milne went five innings for the Jays, allowing seven runs on five hits and five walks.

The Leafs continued their run production in the second inning scoring two more on a two-run shot by Gowan. They would plate another run in the sixth inning for their eighth.

Aurora - Ivy for Strother Cup

September 2, 2014

The quest for the Strother Cup in the North Dufferin Baseball begins Sept. 6.

The Aurora Jays and Ivy Leafs will meet in Aurora for the first game of the best of seven championship series. Game time is 12 p.m.

Ivy enters the finals after defeating the defending league champs Bolton Brewers three games to one in second round play. The Brewers won the league title for five straight years.

The first two games went to Ivy with 4-2 and 3-0 scores. Bolton won game three 6-1. Ivy finished the series defeating Bolton 7-5 in game four.

Aurora faced New Lowell Knights in the semi-finals and had little difficulty taking the series. In the end three games were played with Aurora victories of 6-2, 4-3 and 7-2.

The Jays appeared in the championship round in 2010 and last season, meeting the strong Bolton team both times, only winning one out of nine games played in the final series.

Aurora had a stellar regular season winning 23 games while only suffering three losses and finished in first place. They defeated both New Lowell in the second round and the Barrie Angels in the first round in three games each.

It has been ten years since Ivy made the championship round. They were finalists in 2004 losing to New Lowell 4 games to 2. They were champions in 2003 after beating Clarksburg in the finals.

Ivy has also improved this year finishing third place with a 20-5-1 regular season record. It took them four games in both the opening and second rounds to beat Mansfield Cubs and Bolton.

After the first game on Sept. 6, the teams meet on Sept. 7 in Ivy, Sept. 9 in Aurora, Sept. 13 in Ivy, Sept. 16 in Aurora, Sept. 20 in Ivy, and Sept. 21 in Aurora.

Three NDBL teams OBA finalists

September 2, 2014

New Lowell Knights, Clearview Orioles and Bolton Dodgers were finalists in their respective playoff tournaments this past weekend.

The Knights lost 6-2 to Exeter at the "AA" tournament while the Orioles lost 9-2 to Kincardine at the "B" tournament and the Dodgers lost to Forest 6-3 in the "C" tournament.

The Knights took the long route for the playoffs in Orillia, after suffering a 4-2 loss to London during the opening game. In the second match the Knights won a tight 7-6 game over Port Hope followed by an 11-1 thrashing of Welland. In the fourth game they met Aurora and took the game 4-3 in a seventh inning rally.

The championship game was a rematch of last year pitting the Knights against the undefeated Exeter team. After a tight few innings New Lowell was unable to pounce on Exeter and lost 6-2.

Both the Aurora Jays and Ivy Leafs were also at the tournament. Ivy won their first game 12-0 over Welland followed by a 6-4 loss to Exeter. The teams second loss came from London with a 4-0 score.

Aurora received a bye for the first round, handily defeated London 13-4 but suffered a loss to Exeter 5-4 in their third game. The Jays met New Lowell in the semis and took the loss.

After opening the tournament with a 5-1 win over Amherstburg, the Clearview team received a bye for the second round at their provincials. In third round action they met the hosts, Port Lambton, taking the game 4-3. In the quarterfinals Clearview mustered a 4-2 win over Fort Erie, in a game delayed Saturday night and played Sunday morning. For the semi-finals they beat Welland 6-2.

In the finals, the Orioles met Kincardine and took their first loss 10-5, which set up a sudden death game between the two clubs. The game was played Monday where the Orioles where out-scored 9-2.

While the Bolton Dodgers had a less than promising season, they managed an appearance in the championship game in Thorold losing 6-3 to Forest. The Dodgers opened the tournament with a 9-1 win over Mitchell but suffered a loss to Lasalle 4-3 for their second game. Bolton picked up victories over Essex 12-7 in a nine-inning bout, Thorold Sox 3-1 and Forest 12-0 to advance to the final game. The Dodgers met Forest again but this time lost the contest 6-3.

Barrie Angels were able to make the semi-final of the "C" tournament. After the first game forfeit by St. Thomas the Angels lost the second game to Thorold Fantoms 11-7 before a 10-5 victory against league rival Midland Indians. Barrie continued with wins against Thorold Fantoms 11-0 and Lasalle 3-1 before dropping the semi-final game to Forest 10-5.

Meanwhile the Midland team won their first game 2-1 over the Thorold Sox, suffered a loss against Forest 7-5 and was eliminated by Barrie.

The Creemore Barons and Orangeville Giants bowed out of the "A" playoffs in Kendal after two games. Creemore lost to Woodslee 8-2 and Clarington 3-1. Orangeville suffered a 9-3 loss to Welland and a 15-3 loss to Listowel.

The junior championship of the North Dufferin Baseball League was decided Thursday night when the Aurora Jays won 3-2 over the Barrie Red Sox.

Both teams were tied 5-5 in points heading into the sixth game. Each team won two games and tied one.

The final game was a tight battle with Aurora scoring a run in the first inning. Barrie answered with a run in the third frame followed quickly by Aurora scoring in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead.

In the fifth frame Barrie responded by plating a run to tie the game.

Aurora secured the championship by plating a run in their half of the sixth and held Barrie in the last inning, with a runner on third.

Robert Spencer pitched extremely well for the Jays over his seven innings of work. Spencer allowed two runs on eight hits, one walk, and had eight strikeouts.

Barrie's Ralph Murray started on the mound, pitching four innings, allowed two runs on four hits, four walks, and five strikeouts. Reliever Cole Tomlinson came in for two innings. He gave up one run, two hits, two walks, while striking out two batsmen.

For Aurora Robbie Bradford, James Harkin, Chris Leslie, Matt Zambri, Ryan Laird, and Alex MacKinnon recorded hits.

During a post-game presentation league secretary and junior division convenor Scott Anderson commended both teams on their stellar season and well-played championship series. Anderson, along with past president Rob Wilson presented the Anderson Trophy to Spencer.

Playoffs continue in North Dufferin

August 18, 2014

Post-season play continues in the North Dufferin Baseball League as senior teams move on to the second round.

The Aurora Jays will meet the New Lowell Knights in one series while the Bolton Brewers and Ivy Leafs meet in another.

In first round action, Aurora swept the Barrie Angels in three games. New Lowell defeated the Midland Indians in a five game bout. The Knights tied twice and won two games to give them the six points to advance.

In a three-game contest with the Clearview Orioles, the Bolton Brewers picked up the series win. Meanwhile, the Ivy Leafs advanced to the second round after a victory over the Mansfield Cubs. The two teams tied their first game with Ivy winning the next three contests.

Aurora and New Lowell will play their first game Aug. 19 in Aurora followed by an Aug. 22 contest also in Aurora.

The Bolton-Ivy series started Sunday with Ivy picking up a 4-2 win. The next game is scheduled for Aug. 21 in Bolton.

Over in the junior division, Barrie Red Sox and Aurora Jays continue their championship series. Both teams are tied at five points with a game scheduled for Aug. 21 in Aurora. Should a seventh game be necessary it will be in Barrie.

Playoff schedules and results are available at www.ndbl.ca.

Juniors fall short at provincials

August 18, 2014

It wasn't the outcome the Creemore Barons, Aurora Jays or Barrie Red Sox wanted when they attended provincial championships this past weekend.

The three junior teams failed to make the finals at their respective tournaments. Aurora and Barrie attended the AA tournament while Creemore was at the A tournament.

Barrie lost their first two games knocking them out. In the first, Walker Homesites overpowered with a 7-5 win. The second game was a tight battle with Richmond Hill going 10 innings but Barrie fell short in a 6-5 loss.

Aurora advanced to the third round after a 10-3 thrashing of Martingrove, but lost the next two games to Walker Homesites in a close 3-2 contest and a 7-4 defeat to Chatham.

The Barons had a steady streak of wins to open the tournament. They handily beat Dundas 13-5 in their first game, had a close 8-7 victory over Wyoming for their second, and a 10-4 win over Cambridge in the third game. Creemore came up against a strong Stratford team in the fourth game and suffered an 11-1 loss. They met the London based team, Eager Beaver, in the fifth game and took a 7-5 loss.

All tied up

August 14, 2014

After five games in the junior division championship series between the Barrie Red Sox and Aurora Jays there is still no champion.

The best of five series, or first team to six points, started August 5 with the Red Sox winning the first and third games 2-1 and 11-6. The Jays won games two and five with 8-5 and 10-2 scores. Game four ended in a draw after a seventh inning rally by Barrie tied the game at 5-5.

Both teams are currently tied at five points with game six scheduled for August 21 in Aurora. Should the teams tie, a seventh game will be played in Barrie.

The delay in the next scheduled game is a result of the two teams heading to provincial baseball championships this coming weekend.

Both the Red Sox and Jays are in Chatham for the AA tournament. Aurora will meet Martingrove on Friday at 8:30 p.m. Barrie will play Walker Homesites also on Friday at 8:30 p.m.

The only other junior team competing at provincial playoffs is the Creemore Barons. The team will be in Port Lambtom for the A tournament. First game is Friday at 5:30 p.m. against Dundas.

Both Collingwood and Ivy originally applied to attend but have since backed out.

Aurora-Barrie junior finals start

August 5, 2014

After a successful regular season for both the first place Barrie Red Sox and second place Aurora Jays, the two junior teams now meet in a best of five championship series.

Barrie defeated Alliston Athletics during their first round of playoffs in two games, while the Aurora Jays needed three games to overtake the Creemore Barons.

The championship series should be exciting as both teams battled throughout the season with the Jays winning two of three matches.

The opening game is set for Barrie tonight. Game time is 6:30 p.m. at Dana Field.

The second game will be played August 7 in Aurora at 7:30 p.m. On August 10 Barrie will host the third game with the fourth back in Aurora on August 11 if necessary. Game five has not been set, but game six if required will be played August 14 in Aurora.

Consolation side

The Orillia Minors defeated the Collingwood Jays in a fifth game victory on July 31. The teams traded wins and then tied twice to force the fifth game in a best of three series.

In the other series Midland Twins were eliminated after suffering two losses to the Ivy Rangers.

Orillia and Ivy will meet in a consolation final series. A schedule has yet to be set.

July 7, 2014

Sunny and warm weather graced the North Dufferin Baseball League All-Star Game held Saturday at Mansfield Community Park and hosted by the Mansfield Cubs.

The annual contest included a senior game with the East Division Stars defeating the West Division Stars 5 to 3 and a Junior game which ended in a 2-2 tie for the Reds and Blues.

The 50th senior all-star game got underway at 1 p.m. and remained scoreless until the fourth inning when the East Division Stars scored a run. In the fifth inning the West Division Stars answered back and scored two runs. The East scored again in the eighth inning with the West doing the same to go up three to two.

In the ninth inning, the West Stars looked to have the game in hand until a third out call was appealed and overturned continuing the game. Three runs for the East Stars crossed the plate. The West, as home team, was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning and went down in defeat by a score of 5 to 3.

Most Valuable Players selected for the game were Andrew Bukovec of the Aurora Jays on the winning side and for the West Division Logan Wallace from Mansfield. Bukovec pitched three scoreless innings, giving up three hits, one walk, while striking out five. Wallace went one for two at the plate and hit a two run homerun.

Following the senior game, the players of the 21st junior all-star game took to the field. The nine inning contest was structured to have a combination of players from each of the eight junior clubs on both all-star teams pitting teammate against teammate and adding an interesting flare to the game.

The Blues started the scoring with one run in the first frame. The Reds scored their first run in the fifth inning to tie. In the seventh the Blues again scored to go up but failed to hold onto the win when the Reds plated a run in the ninth frame. The game ended in a 2-2 tie.

MVP honours went to Nathan Dix of Orillia for the Blues, batting 3 for 4 with two doubles and scoring once. Devon Wu of Aurora was named MVP for the Reds. Wu pitched three innings and allowed one run on two hits while striking out six batters.
