1997 World Series Runner Up

SOFTBALL The Warrington Athletic Association 12-year-old all-star team finished second in the Softball Little League World Series championships, held Aug. 10-16 in Portland, Ore.

After losing the opening game by 3-2 to La Crescenta, Calif., Warrington swept through the loser's bracket in the double-elimination tournament, advancing to the championship round with a 16-11 win against Guagua of the Phillipines.

There, Warrington defeated unbeaten Midway Little League of Waco, Texas, 4-3. Winning pitcher Allison Morris allowed only four hits. That forced a second game, which Waco won, 6-0. It was the fourth title for Waco, which won three straight through 1995.

Warrington's other wins were 8-7 over Brookfield, Ill., 16-1 against Mexico City and 6-5 over La Crescenta, avenging the opening loss. Morris got the victory in that second meeting while Christine Alff had two RBIs. Alff and Linda Secka each knocked in four runs in the win against the Phillipines.

Coach Dan Hayes, currently coaching the Blue Thunder 18U team, has fond memories of that team.

"I just wanted to say a few words about our trip there in 2002. It was my happiest experience in all of my years in softball (and there have been many.) After winning the local (sections) tournament that was held in Warrington, we advanced to States held in Ford City (near Pittsburgh.) Playing in 100 degree temperatures, our girls ended up defeating Loyalsock and advancing to the Regional tournament held in Delaware with a berth to the LL World Series up for grabs. We lost our first game of the tournament to New York and were starting to get that mindset, "well, it was nice to get this far," but things turned around we continued to win and New York lost twice. We won our bracket and were playing Connecticut for the right to head to Portland. With the circumstances what they were, I consider this the most exciting game I have ever been associated with (that includes 2012 High school State Championship game.) The Connecticut pitcher was outstanding and we managed just 2 hits in the game but the hits were in the same inning. After an infield single, shortstop Krista Hayes lined a triple to left center and the only run of the game scored from first.

So in 2 days we left for Portland and the girls were treated wonderfully in Oregon. We lost our first game to Waco Texas and we lost to the host team Oregon (whose pitcher went on to pitch for the University of Oregon,) defeated Canada, Asia Pacific and Latin America. As the tournament played out we lost to the 2 teams that ended up playing for the championship Texas defeated Oregon in the finals. Girls were tired and the experience had what seemed to be only a mediocre effect on them but that was then. NOW they ALL look back and realize what a great, great experience it was. I know it was for me."

Dan still remembers the names of all of the players on that team like it was yesterday.
