About Montgomery County Warriors

Montgomery County Warriors (MoCo Warriors)is a 12 month basketball program that says that anyone that wants to play basketball can. We focus on the improvement of fundamentals and the development of skills in basketball and life overview. Academics, positive attitude, strong moral values, sportsmanship, family values and the drive to never give up are what we bring out in every member of our teams.  We do more than just basketball.  We remind them while basketball is part of their life, their is more to life than basketball!

Competitive teams this year will be playing in different leagues, scrimmates, College Showcases, Jr. NBA events, AAU Tournaments, YBOA Tournaments, and other national competitions based upon their development level. The tournaments we play are mostly in the DMV area in Fall and Winter, but in the Spring and Summer we really get out there!

Every year the organization grows, branches out its wings and develop STUDENT athletes to the next level.

By aggressive fundraisng and donations, we keep the fees down to a minimal, so that cost is removed as a factor for keeping a child from participating.

If you have a Boy or Girl player that is between 2nd and 12th Grade feel free to contact us.

2019 H.S. Spring / Summer Preparation!

In preparation for the 2019 travel season which will be an important marker for many of the H.S. Ball players, MoCo Warriors Basketball intends to travel to multiple regions in order to get the players the proper scouting looks and options.  We will be playing in NTBA, AAU, NCAA, and other events that will be viewed by Recruiters, Coaches and other potential college representatives in attempts to help our players get the scholarships to further their education that they deserve.

We will be playing almost every weekend during live season, and we will have modified schedules for the month of June so not to interrupt or interfere with the summer leagues for the H.S. students.

Our tentative schedule for the Spring / Summer of 2019 is as follows:

  Dates Location Tournament
  03/16/19 - 03/17/19 Rockville, MD MD Classic
03/23/19 - 03/24/19 King of Prussia, PA ZG Liberty Bell Classic

We will be also planning camps appropriate for the players.

Please note that the schedule will be updated as necessary to insure that they get the proper exposure.  This will be one of the most demanding and hectic schedules the organization has ever faced, but it will be the most profitable for our players.

Please note that players who wish to join the team can contact us at anytime for an evaluation.  Completing a try-out form is the best way to insure you get the information.  Their will be no bystanders traveling with our teams.  If you are chosen and you do travel with the team, be prepared to give it your all on and off the court.

Check back regularly for updates.  We will be working on the Non-High School teams schedules shortly as well!

If you should have any questions and/or concerns please feel free to contact us at mocowarriors@hotmail.com.

R.I.P. Steven "Scoop" Frazier

October 23, 2018

MoCo Warriors Morn the loss of their ex-teammate and send condolences out to the family!

This is a sad day for the MoCo Warriors as the news that ex-play Steven "Scoop" at age 20 was shot to death earlier this morning in Germantown, This is sad as he had lots of potential and this unfortunate shooting takes the future from another youth. Our prayers go out to his family as they suffer the loss and we will always remember Scoop as the player that loved to do the impossible.

MoCo Warriors successful off the Court and in Court!

MoCo Warriors awarded judgements against Larry Payne (dba United Hoops Unlimited)!

MoCo Warriors took multiple teams into the United Hoops Unlimited Winter League (Owned by Larry Payne and ran by the Paynes) in 2017.  After 9 weeks and paying them in full, the League failed to play more than 1/2 of the games and shut down the league without refunding money accordingly.  This impacted both the organization and the players as we went weeks without games in a season that was to prepare us for the upcoming Spring Travel season.  MoCo Warriors was forced to seek alternate tournaments in order to complete the season and give the players (children) what their parents paid for and what they worked hard for.  With no sympathy or satisfaction from the Paynes who ran this league and basically went off with the organizations money and didn't give them what they had paid for!  BBB currently has them as an F rating with multiple unresolved complaints.

MoCo Warriors had to take them to court and in August 2018 was successful in the District Court of Maryland in getting a judgement against Larry Payne (DBA United Hoops Unlmtd) and in September 2018 was successful in getting a larger judgement against Larry Payne (dba United Hoops Unlimited).

Hopefully these judgements send a message to United Hoops Unlimited in the future and lets them know that they shouldn't be out their taking money without providing the services.

MoCo Warriors 2020 go to NTBA Nationals and Represent Montgomery County!

July 7, 2018

MoCo Warriors 2020 went to the NTBA Nationals July 7-11, 2018 in Myrtle Beach, SC as the only 10th Grade team from Montgomery County, and amazed everyone.  We went with 7 (Jaylen, Maximus, Desmond, Chris, Shamar, Isaiah and Samaj) along with two coaches (Coach Kerwin and Coach Bill). We went with all intention to play in the Silver Division of Nationals, but the boys did so well in Pool play, finishing 2nd Place (2-1), that the boys took the bid into the Gold Division.  The boys were defeated in the 2nd round of the Gold Division.  But they played amazingly throughout the tournament.

Congratulations MoCo 2020 - 2nd Place in Slam City Save the Game Tournament!

August 13, 2017

MoCo 2020 - 2nd Place in their division of the Slam City - Save the Game Tournament!

All teams played hard this weekend, but I have to give congratulations to MoCo Warriors 2020 who came in 2nd place in the tournament. The should be proud of themselves after blowing out Slam City by over 30 points on Saturday, Slam City had to bring their Varsity squad in to play against us and still were unsuccessful, so they resorted to advising the referees on which calls to make. Even playing against, their JV, Varsity and the referees they barely won by a 3 point shot in overtime. I am so proud of how hard we fought to keep it together against all odds! Great job, even though it was clearly stolen from you, We made sure they new they would never take us straight-up!

MoCo Warriors 2020 - 7th out of 34 in Zero Gravity Nationals

April 23, 2017 – 05:30 PM

Congratulations MoCo Warriors 2020 (9th Grade) pull off what all think wasn't going to be done. This past weekend they played in Zero Gravity's National and completed their division in 7th place out of 34 teams which represented 13 states. The team was coached by Coach Kerwin and lead by their captain, Shamar (#1) with Ricky (#7), Jaylen (#11), Samaj (#13), Phillip (#18), Kyler (#20), & Malik (#22).

ZG Nationals after winning pool play 3-1 2017

What is more remarkable, is that they completed pool play in 1st place with only 7 players. They were a defensive machine. Offensively they were all over the other teams dropping threes from every part of the court and attacking the basket incredibly.

Unfortunately only 6 players as they started their Championship run. They left it all on the floor, and it did pay off. Great job boys!

Special thanks to Rick Lane, Barbara Ortiz, and Kershon Stephens for taking their time out to drive up, support and assist in making sure the players were mentally, physically, emotionally, and nutritionally ready all weekend.

This is the first of many Nationals in our futures and exposure events for this team and the organization as a hole.

The Warrior FAMILY definitely went to Nationals and represented not only the organization but DMV Ball !!!

TOP 10 from our division in Nationals:

  Team
C AFB Freedom (CT)
2 Rose City Intensity (CT)
3 Freeport Red Ravens (NY)
4 Ubuntu Albany Legacy Lions (NY)
5 East Coast Panthers (NY)

2016 Premier 1 "Battle of the Beach & Boardwalk" Tournament

June 5, 2016

Congratulations!

Congratulations to all of the teams.  I would like to thank all of the parents, coaches, players, friends and family who took helped this tournament be so successful.  I had a lot of positive feedback from coaches, referees, facility managers and spectators in the way our teams conducted themselves and they were very impressed of the size of the organization and the fact that we made all of our games in all of the various locations with limited issues.  That is definitely due to the players, coaches and parents.

Although we didn't bring back any championships from the tournament, I must say that the teams played extremely well and were very competitive in all of the divisions.  The hard work in practice is definitely showing in the progress and improvement of all.

Now a special Congratulations to the 8th Grade Boys who came out of Pool Play in First Place (3-0) and finished the tournament in 3rd place.  Although we lost in the semi-finals, this is a very special accomplishment for the team as last year we were blown out in the tournament, while this year we blew away 2 of the 3 teams that we beat by over 30.  We are proud of our boys.

Thank you to Kim Voyagesby Kim for handling the hotel accommodations. And thank you to Stephanie Fields for volunteering to drive the player's Van.

2016 Slam City's Alice Nadine Classic Tournament

May 1, 2016

Congratulations to all Teams

This weekend's Slam City "Alice Nadine Classic" tournament this weekend was completed as follows:

  • 2nd Places - 9u, 11u, 14u-G (in 8/9th Tournament)

  • 3rd Places - 13u, 14u, and 15u

In our largest expansion year, we had 6 teams playing in this tournament who had to overcome many issues and problems that were brought by poor officiating. Although we didn't win any championships this weekend. Every team placed. These are great results for our 2nd tournament of the season. Let's keep up the fight and the hard work. And a speceial thanks to Ed Maldonado for stepping up and coaching the 15u in this tournament.

But with good news, unfortunately comes bad news, Jonah was injured during the 2nd game. Jonah plays on our 13u team. Jonah has played for the MoCo Warriors for many seasons and puts a lot of strength and effort on and off of the court. We wish him a quick and complete speedy 100% recovery. Please join our family and yours and pray for his recovery.

The MoCo Warriors were able to visit the University to view the game by the great help and determination of our Administrator Donita. The players who went not only watched the game, but were able to play a 1/2 time exhibition game. Both Coach Kerwin and Coach Rodney were happy that the boys look forward to the event. The players that went were Chuka, Samaj, Shamar, Bobo, Dezmond, Antonio, Javon, Chris, Jaylen, and Jefferson. We'd like to also thank the BSU Athletic Director, Thomas F. Fall Season Congratulations

Congratulations to all of our teams.  We had a very successful season, with 3 of our 5 teams being newly formed. But over all started slow, but showed progress in the end.  And to note it shows how good a group of players you are when the opponents bring players that are 2-4 years over the accepted age to play against you because they know that they need the edge in order to keep up.

The teams finished as follows in their grade pools as follows:

  • 11u – 2nd Place (7 – 1 record)
  • 13u – 5th Place (2 – 6 record)
  • 14u A – 3rd Place (5 – 3 record)
  • 14u B – 3rd Place (5 – 2 record)
  • 16u – 5th Place (2 – 6 record)
Congratulations to all teams!

A Special thanks to Coach Rodney, Coach Zeerena and Alwin (Hopefully a future Coach) for all of their assistance this season.  And of course thank you to all my parents that support all of it and sit there through the games even all day!!! :-)

MoCo Warriors 3rd, 5th, & 7th Grade take 2nd place in Slam City - Let Your Playing Do Your Talking

August 23, 2015

Spring 2015 MoCo Warriors 3rd, 5th, & 7th Grade take 2nd place in Slam City - Let Your Playing Do Your Talking

WolfpackWolfPack 3rd grade team out of Washington D.C. coached by Rome joined the under MoCo Warriors to play in Slam City's Let Your Playing Do Your Talking tournament.  The team only came with 5 players available.  They showed true heart and were a force for the other teams to recon with (imagine what would have happened if they didn't have 5 missing players.)  They played up into the 4th grade divisions.  We look forward to the Wolfpack joining in as our younger team and playing in a few more competitions in the 2015 - 2016 season and beyond.

The 5th Grade team also played up to the 6th Grade level in this competition.

All three teams were remarkable and even though all 3 teams were defeated in the Championship game, none of the teams lost by more than 8.  All of the games this weekend were highly charged and great competition.  The organization's teams finished the 2014-2015 season on a very high note and everyone was amazingly strong in the finish!

This ended our season on a very high note!

Spring MoCo  Warriors 5th & 7th Grade teams at the opening of the 2015 Metroball Blacktop SummeBasketball League.  Both teams were there the entire day as they anticipated and looked forward to the opening day of the season!

The MoCo 5th Grade team enjoyed their game, although they struggled in this first game.

Unfortunately the MoCo 7th Grade team was bumped out of the opening day festivities due to the sponsors/league's commercial obligations after waiting over 4 hours.  As the coach and director I want to once again apologize to the kids and parents.   The boys teams hopefully look forward to a better season going forward.

On an up note, the 7th grade boys were able to get to meet and take a photo with Washington Wizards SG, Bradley Beal and Retired Washington Redskins linebacker, Lemar Marshall.

MoCo Warriors take a break from Basketball for Fun at Shadowland

June 12, 2015

Sometimes we all need a break from the fun / high pressure of basketball, so the Warriors spent one night at Shadowland in Gaithersburg just playing laser tag.

Yes the boys did team up against the coach and lost against him.  lol.

But what was most important is that we all had fun.  This was another last minute decision and many couldn't make it this time.  We will do something again, with more notice so more of the organization can plan to enjoy it together.

MoCo Warriors 5th Grade Team Champions in SlamCity Grassroots 4 Tournament

May 31, 2015

Spring 2015 MoCo Warriors 11u team on their Championship in the 5th Grade Division of the Slam City Grassroots 4 Tournament.  This newly formed team has been playing hard and getting stronger and stronger in every tournament.  Congratulations on their first of many Championships to come.

MoCo Warriors 13u team were Runner-Up in the 7th Grade Division of the Slam City Grassroots 4 Tournament.  The completed pool play in 1st place.  This is the firs time I have ever had to say this but we lost to Team Fire Elite, a team that we defeated the day before and because of that they brought multiple extra players who seemed to be above the age of the division who made no difference in the game until they started to play dirty (hitting, punching, pulling, taunting, kicking..etc...).  This was not caught by the Slam City referee, because unfortunately they only had one referee handling a championship game who was unable to catch them in their poor sportsmanship and clearly violent type of play.   I am proud of my players because they never stopped down to their type of playing, they just continued to push on.  Congratulations on the Runner-Up position and excellent job on maintaining your exposure and staying disciplined in your game.

 Excellent Job to you WARRIORS!!!!!

MoCo Warriors 11u & 12u Teams take 2nd Place in PVBL 2015 Winter League

March 8, 2015

After a long season and 3 weeks of weather Delays, the AAU sanctioned 2015 Potomac Valley Basketball League (PVBL) Championship games were finally played.

In what was clearly a very Competitive Championship game, the MoCo Warriors 12u team was defeated by the DMV Swarm by 3 points (47 - 44), making the DMV Swarm the 2015 PVBL Winter League Champions and leaving MoCo Warriors with the 2nd Place position.

Warriors 11u were defeated by the Columbia Ravens, leaving them in 2nd place at the end of the 2015 PVBL Winter League.  Being that this is the first season that this 11u team played together, that was still an amazing position to take!

Congratulations to both teams on their success and future successes.

MoCo Warriors Prepare for 11u & 12u Championships in PVBL 2015 Winter League

February 17, 2015

Due to weather and facility issues the Championship games were moved to the 1st of March. The playoffs were exciting to say the least and at the end of the Playoff weekend we find our family with the 11u and 12u heading for a championship run!

Warriors 14u defeat Laural Lakers in a nail bighting game in the first round of the playoffs, but then were defeated by the Classics in the 2nd Round. Great job and effort for a team that has only been together for less than 4 months.

Warriors 12u defeat Next Level Up 51-4 in the first round of the playoffs and then go on to bead Maryland Motion 49 to 43 in an emotionally charged game. Although Coach Kerwin (Kerwin Stephens) head Coached the team, it was Assitant Coach Rodney's (Rodney Thorne) passionate words that inspired the team and pumped their blood up with his charging command "NOT TODAY, we will not loose TODAY, we won't play badly TODAY, we wont be going home TODAY!" Warriors expect to face DMV Swarm on Sunday in the Championship games!

Warriors 11u will face Columbia Ravens on Sunday for the Championship!

11u and 12u teams, its time to represent in the Championship!!!!!

Warrior Saves Life

Robert Mozie joined the Montgomery County Warriors 11u (5th Grade) team in Fall 2012. His game has substantially improved and he has become very comfortable in creating a great shot!

On Tuesday, November 13, 2012, Robert saved an elderly woman's life!

Robert was ridding his bike home and there was a older lady lying on the ground. The lady fell on the concrete and busted her head open. She was shouting out "help me, help me". Robert went over to the lady as fast as he could and tried to pick her up, but he could not. So Robert ran to a neighbor house and knock on the door and asked them to come and help him with the lady. Robert and neighbor that came to help him called the ambulance. Robert asked the neighbor to go and get some blankets because the lady was cold lying on the ground. Robert has been so worried about the lady until he found out that she was in better health.

The lady who didn't want to be identified is in recovering health and back home by the grace of God and Rob's quick thinking and caring actions.

On November 28, 2012 his coach, Kerwin gave him a small token in front of the team to thank him for his community actions and to point out that he is very proud of him on and off of the court! Robert stands as an example for both his teammates and his peirs of how important it is to help others!

Warriors Bring home the Silver in MD Flames Gettin Hot Tournament

June 3, 2012

MoCo Warriors take 2nd Place in MD Flames Gettin Hot Tournament that took place on June 2-3, 2012 at the Discovery SportsPlex in Boyds, MD.

The MoCo Warriors - 10u (4th Grade) team which played this weekend consisted of Jaylen, Dezmond, Chase, Chris, Malykhi, Jordan, Marselis, Jakob (missing from picture), Imani, and Kyle (missing from picture).

The team played well the entire tournament and played with all of their heart and showed their amazing skills and ability to excecute directions and follow the plan to victory!

Game 2 was secured by Jordan's amazing rebound and shot that put us into overtime and Chase's winning buzzer beating with .4 seconds left on the clock.

Chase was the MVP of game 4 hands down with more than 6 steals, 2 amazing blocks the shot that put us in overtime with .1 seconds left and scoring over 10 points. Chris was the highest point scorer in the game with more than 17 points!

All and all the entire team pulled together and put it all on the floor during this 4 game series but loose the 4th game in Overtime by 5 points in a game that not only had the spectators and family of the game off of its feet, but also had the attention and excitement of the upcoming teams, and spectators of the other courts! A referee made the comment that basically sums up the 4th Game, "The team that wins this game deserves to win, but the team that looses doesn't deserve to loose"

This tournament was the last one of the season, but clearly showed without a doubt how much heart the team has and how much of Family they are! And we walk off into the summer as Medal holding WINNERS

Coach Kerwin has been proud of them the entire season as they fought to the end against the many issues and other problems that they faced in tournament and left the floor with nothing but pure excitement and a clear feeling of pride as his team took the 2nd Place (Silver) in this well match and hard played tournament!
