Question on the rule pertaining to "whether or not" or "when" are the girls expected to slide into home. We've been told, and have had conflicting calls this season. Could someone please clarify this for all age barckets? Thanks!

First the rule applies to plays at every base not just home. Players must avoid contact. There is nothing that says they have to slide. With that said, in my opinion there are times that the only way to avoid contact is to slide.

At all bases, not just home, runners are expected to attempt to avoid contact. There is no such thing as a must slide rule in our league or the PONY League.

Any runner who does not attempt to avoid contact will be called out If the umpire does not feel an attempt was made to avoid the contact. Any runner who intentionally runs into a fielder can be called out as well as thrown out of the game.

Keep in mind that this is the umpires judgement and if contact is made while the runner is trying to avoid contact the runner could be called safe.

The key is:

MUST MAKE AN ATTEMPT TO AVOID CONTACT

Thanks for the repling to my question. I believe everyone (coach's and umpires) should review this before the game because some pitchers including ours remain in the way of the plate when there is going to be no play "on the steal" at home. This could be a problem since the runner is hustling to get to the plate as fast as possible, leaving the pitcher being the only player knowing where the ball acctually is located. With that said, if a player slides into the plate thinking the "tag" is coming and this results in contact I would think the player should be safe!! WITH SAFTY BIEING THE NUMBER ONE CONCERN, Please correct me if I'm missing the call.

Yep Salty you missed it somewhere.

If a runner slides into a base and contact is made that is fine as sliding is considered attempting to avoid a tag or contact. The only way anything different could be called on a slide is if the runner comes in with spikes up to kick a fielder or slides completely away from the base in order to take the fielder out.

Terry, we had an instance in a game where our first baseman fielded a ball and threw it home on a bases loaded force out, our catcher and the runner from third (who did not slide) had contact and both girls ended up on the ground. The umps call was that the throw would not have been in time to get the runner out so the contact rule did not apply. Was this correct?

The contact rule is always in affect. There is never a time when it is not.

Any runner who does not attempt to avoid contact will be called out ****If the umpire does not feel an attempt was made to avoid the contact.**** Any runner who intentionally runs into a fielder can be called out as well as thrown out of the game.

Keep in mind that this is the ****umpires judgement***** and if contact is made while the runner is trying to avoid contact the runner could be called safe.

******MUST MAKE AN ATTEMPT TO AVOID CONTACT******
