On behalf of Hockey Newfoundland & Labrador’s Minor Council I wish to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for making this year’s hockey season such a success.

To the coaches, volunteers, officials, executives and parents who dedicated your time to ensure that the minor hockey programs we provide are first class and that our children play this great game in a friendly and safe environment, your commitment is applauded.

This year’s Minor Hockey Slogan Was “The Game is Better, When We are in it Together”. Thank you for believing in our sport and the programs we offer. When we all work together for a common goal the results become outstanding.  Our provincial tournaments were the culmination of a long season that had many successes. You should all be proud of your accomplishments and look forward to the upcoming challenges that you will face as you progress through your minor hockey career.

To the players, have a great summer break you all deserve it. The hockey season is a long one and it can certainly take its toll on you, your parents and all of our volunteers.

To our graduating midget hockey players, congratulations! You have had a great minor hockey career and you will certainly be missed. Good luck with your future endeavours both in hockey and life.

In closing I wish to thank you all for your support over the past season. Hockey is a great sport and I hope your minor hockey experience this year, was nothing less than that.  Have a great Summer and I look forward to seeing you all again next season.

20180412 - Wreath Laying Ceremony and Banner presentation

April 12, 2018

We, the executive of CBR Minor Hockey, wish to invite you all to attend two very special events, as we join the rest of Canada in grieving the terrible loss we experienced as both a Hockey community and a Country this past week.

Tomorrow evening, Thursday April 12th at 7:30 pm, there will be a Ceremony at the Gushue Sports Complex on Smallwood Dr. This event is being held by all the Metro Area Minor Hockey Associations together as part of the light your rink action. Please bring a Light, Dress in Green or a Jersey and feel free to bring your stick, as we all take a moment to reflect on this tragic loss.

On Sunday April 15th at 1:00 pm, CBRMHA along with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 50 and the support of The Town of Conception Bay South will be holding a wreath laying Ceremony in memory of these 15 Fallen players. This will take place at the Monument of Honour in front of the Town Hall.

We encourage all our Players to please come and Join us. Wear a Jersey, and feel free to bring a stick. The intention is to leave a ring of sticks around the Monument as part of the Sticks Out movement.

A collection will be taken up as well for anyone who wishes to contribute. The funds will be forwarded to the Humboldt Broncos organization to aid the families.

We hope you can take part in these events.

Yours In Hockey

Hockey NL – 2017/18 Provincial Scoring Website

February 8, 2018

For the upcoming 2017-18 provincial tournaments Hockey Newfoundland & Labrador will do a pilot project using online score reporting. This will enable associations to post scores immediately after a game ends*.

It will also incorporate a standing section for each tournament so not only will the scores be available but the standings as well. We are hoping that this makes score reporting easier for the associations and also more readily available for players and parents.

We look forward to the provincial tournaments….. less than 9 weeks from now!!

20180117 - Important Message From Hockey NL Regarding Helmets, Mouth Guards & Neck Gurards

January 17, 2018

IMPORTANT MEMORANDUM

January 17, 2018

To:   All Minor Hockey Associations, Senior, Junior and High School Teams/Leagues

Cc:   Hockey NL Board of Directors, Female Committee, Officiating Committee.

Re:   Helmets, Mouth Guards and Neck Guards

In an attempt to ensure that all members are aware of important equipment requirements and the fact that we have new members each year coaching our players, we wish that you circulate this reminder.

Helmets in Pre-Game Warm Ups:

Hockey NL requires that all players properly wear their helmets and facial shields securely fastened during all pre-game warm-ups.  We are responsible for the safety of our members and we ask that you ensure that this safety requirement is being adhered to by all your players.  Any person violating this protective equipment requirement is to be reported to the President for possible sanction.

Helmets on Coaches:

Hockey NL requires that all coaches and on ice staff who are on the ice with players during practices must wear a CSA certified helmet with chin strap fastened.  We are responsible for the safety of our members and we ask that you ensure that this safety requirement is being adhered to by all your on-ice coaching staff.  Any person reported not wearing a CSA certified helmet on the ice is liable for suspension.

Intra Oral Mouth Guards

In September 2003 Hockey NL adopted mandatory intra oral mouth guards for all minor hockey players.  It has come to our attention that there are number of teams/associations that have players continuing to attempt to play without wearing mouth guards.  Even though we have placed a rule supplement for our officials to police this mandate, Hockey NL is urging that all associations and coaches also take some responsibility in ensuring all their players are wearing mouth guards including practices.

BNQ Throat Protectors

The wearing of a BNQ approved throat protector is compulsory for players registered in minor hockey.  We have reports that some players are not wearing their throat protectors in practice.  Again it is crucial that each team and coach take the initiative to ensure that all players are wearing their neck guards during games and practices.

We appreciate your support and attention on these issues, as they are important risk management issues and certainly potential liability issues if we are not vigilant in its enforcement.

Regards,

Craig Tulk

Executive Director

Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador

20171014 - Bantam House League Evaluation Groups

October 14, 2017

Below are the Bantam HL Evaluation Groups for players registered to date.

Registration:  If you have registered and your child's name is not listed please contact our office or our Registrar Tracey Bennett-Parsons through the contact us section.

Communication:  Our main line of communication to parents is our website, please check it frequently for updates. If you haven't done so already, like us on Facebook and/or follow us on Twitter for all hockey news. If you have any questions regarding the Peewee HL Program please contact our Bantam Coordinator Stephanie Metcalfe through the contact us section.

Evaluations: Your child will start off the season being assigned to an evaluation try-out group. Groups will receive 2 evaluation sessions, please check the schedule tab for dates, times and location.  Players are assessed on skating/hockey ability and these assessments are completed by our technical staff and are based on several factors. Our technical staff has final say over team placement. After the assessments are complete, each player will be assigned a team.

Team Jerseys: Please be advised that effective 2017/2018 hockey season parents must provide a post-dated cheque for their child's House League Jersey. No jersey will be disbursed without a post-dated cheque written for $100 made payable to CBRMHA and dated for April 20, 2018. At the end of the season, cheques will be returned or destroyed upon return of Jersey on or before April 19, 2018.  Cheques will be deposited on April 20th 2018 for any Jersey not returned, no exceptions, the policy will be strictly enforced. A Jersey distribution day with further details will be posted on the website please check the announcements for an update

Practice:  As our ice time fluctuates weekly – due to the need for tournaments (for all divisions), Hockey NL league games, Town requirements and other ice rental groups – the location and times of practice will vary week-to-week.  We operate out of the CBS Arena and the RFM (Robert French Memorial) Stadium, always check the rink location when looking at the schedule. Teams first practice will start Saturday October 21st.

Home & Away Games: Peewee HL teams participate in the IHL (interlocking house league) for all games. Games are normally played on Sundays but that's based on ice availability. In the event that a game is cancelled an alternate day, time & rink location will be provided before the end of the hockey season. Home games are typically played at the RFM Stadium and away games are played at various rinks in & around the metro area.  Parents can check the IHL website www.ihlhockey.ca for their team's schedule. IHL games will begin Sunday October 22nd, will run to December 17 then break for the Christmas holidays and resume January 7th to March 4th.

IHL Year End Tournament:  As part of the house league program, all teams will play in the IHL year end playoffs that is tentatively scheduled for March 23-25, 2018.

Safety First!

Please make sure your player is on the ice with full hockey attire — helmet, mouth and neck guards, elbow and shin pads, athletic support, hockey pants, shoulder pads, socks and jersey.  Helmet with full face protection, neck & mouth guards are mandatory.

If your child has any medical issues (i.e. asthma, allergies, attention/behavioural issues, etc.) inform your team’s coach to ensure the proper attention is given to this child.  Please ensure that you have any and all required medical devices/medicine available with you for each practice (i.e. inhaler, epipen etc.).

No player is permitted on the ice while the Zamboni is on and the Zamboni gate is open.

All players must wait for a coach prior to going onto the ice.

Please use assigned dressing rooms.  Each team is designated a dressing room and it is usually incorporated into the schedule.  Please follow your assigned dressing room to ensure smooth hourly transitions and to prevent overcrowding

When you arrive at the rink on your scheduled day:

  1. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your session
  2. Check for your Groups dressing room assignment
  3. Check in with the Coordinator or Evaluation Staff

If you have any questions about the program please contact our Bantam Coordinator Stephanie Metcalfe through the contact us section.

The evaluation group list will be updated on Friday morning Oct 13th & Saturday evening Oct 14th to include players that were unsuccessful in the B tryouts.

Important notice to all Players and Parents

October 31, 2017

Important notice to all Players and Parents. For the the second time in as weeks we have had a complaint from our Figure skating club regarding the behavior of our players towards the skaters.

This past Saturday we had a number of our players shouting at the skaters who were on the ice. Cat calling them as they fell and skated. Shouting demands that they should wear helmets.

There have also been reports of our players taking videos of the skaters.

This behavior will not be tolerated, condoned, or accepted. Players found to be taking part in this behavior will be removed from the facility.

Parents please ensure you explain to your players that this is disrespectful and dangerous to the skaters, many of whom find it extremely distracting.

We share our facilities with a number of users and as in all aspects of polite society we have an obligation to be respectful of others. Anyone found not to be in compliance will be dealt with.

20170927 - Our Girls Are Coming Home!

September 27, 2017

It is with great excitement that we, the Presidents of CBR, Mount Pearl and Paradise Minor, announce that after a great deal of consideration we are bringing our girls home!

We feel that in light of some recent changes and in an effort to further the development of our Female players our best course of action was to return to an association based delivery of our programs.

This will mean we are able to offer Technical hours with our TD’s.  Go back to association based Provincial teams.  Provide interlocking House League play amongst our associations.  Provide and grow a quality hockey program in our own communities.  Most importantly give each young lady a chance to feel that sense of pride of wearing the home town colours and crest, be it the Blades, Renegades or Warriors.

Each association will be holding a parent session in the coming days and we hope that you will come out and join us.  CBR will be holding their parent information session this Thursday September 28th @7pm in the warm room of the CBS Arena. Registration is ongoing online for each association and we encourage you to sign up as we need to get our numbers finalized quickly. The deadline to register will be October 8th.

So girls welcome Home.  We look forward to a fantastic season of Fun, Friends and Hockey!

Vince Burton, Trevor Murphy and George Dupont

20170818 - On-Line Registration Now Open for DJHL and AAA Try-outs

August 18, 2017

Players will be able to register on-line by August 11th for DJHL Peewee A and Bantam A try-outs and St. John's and Tri-Com Zone Peewee AAA and Bantam AAA try-outs for the 2017-18 season. Click on the Registration Information link on the left side of the DJHL home page to complete the required form.

All players must complete the on-line registration form even if they are only interested in playing AAA. The data collected through the on-line registration process becomes the official database for the DJHL and AAA try-out process. The necessary roster information is shared accordingly with the various League officials and team staffs.

Players trying out for AAA must tick the appropriate box on the registration form. This ensures a player's name appears on the AAA try-out roster for the team in their zone.

The DJHL offers the on-line registration process to AAA teams in the St. John's and Tri-Com zones as a courtesy. The DJHL does not operate the AAA teams. Hence, parents must pay the AAA teams directly for try-out fees. Note also that each AAA team has their own registration deadline.

Parents are asked to follow the league web site for announcements regarding on-line payment of fees. This season the League will be offering email debit payment and PayPal credit card payment options. The practice of paying by cheque or cash on a designated date and location will be phased out.

The deadline for registering for DJHL Peewee A and Bantam A try-outs is September 1st.

20170612 - Proposed Constitutional Amendment for CBRMHA

June 12, 2017

Be it so moved that Article 8 – Nominations paragraph (c) sub section (vi) Executive Coordinator be struck and changed to the title of  “Special events and Tournament Coordinator”

ARTICLE 8 – NOMINATIONS

(a) Each member shall have the privilege of nominating a member for each office of the Association;

            (b) For the purpose of filling positions on the Board a Nominating Committee may be struck;

 (c) The Association shall consist of the following Board Members all of whom shall be voting members in good standing of the Association and shall consist of four Executive positions and ten Director Positions, for a total of fourteen board members, which will be made up of the following:

(i) President;

(ii) Past President;

(iii) Vice President;

(iv)Secretary/Treasurer

(v) All Star League Representative;

(vi)Executive Coordinator

(vii) Divisional Coordinators (Initiation, Novice, Atom, PeeWee, Bantam, Midget);

(viii) Registrar;

(ix) Female Representative/Fundraising Coordinator

The President, Past President, Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer shall be known as the “Executive”. The remaining members of the Board shall be known as Directors. All members of the Board shall be elected at an AGM of members of the Association with the exception of the Past President position. Board members (with the exception of Divisional Coordinators) shall be elected for a two year term at the AGM and are eligible for re-election at the end of the two year term. The positions of President, Secretary/Treasurer, and Registrar shall be elected on even numbered years. The positions of Vice President, All Star League Representative, Executive Coordinator and Female Representative/Fundraising Coordinator shall be elected on odd numbered years.

Justification for change:

Many of the current duties outlined for this position in the By Laws are better suited to assignment for paid staff and other executive members.  This would allow for continuity of the duties which in many ways go well beyond what can be expected of a volunteer.  The new proposed position would maintain the voting balance of the board and create a position that would bridge the one year term for divisional coordinators when it comes to running our annual tournaments and jamborees across all divisions.  This positions duties would also include be on the events committee for any AAA, Atlantic or Provincial tournaments and events which we may be involved in hosting as an association.

Motion was discussed and reviewed for submittal to the AGM agenda at the June 4th executive meeting

Vince Burton

CBRMHA President

20170613 - HOCKEY NL ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - SOME KEY RESULTS FROM THE MEETINGS

June 13, 2017

Grand Falls-Windsor, NL- Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador concluded their Annual General Meeting this weekend in Gander on Sunday that saw over 150 delegates representing associations, leagues and teams in the province.

A summary of some of the items reported during this year’s AGM include:

A concussion awareness and recognition campaign was announced and laid out for the upcoming season that will see tool cards on concussions posted in all arena’s player benches and dressing rooms for the upcoming season in an attempt to continue to address player safety. The Government of NL, the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association and Municipalities NL are all partnering with the project.

Registration numbers continue to rise with total registrants of just under 14,000, with a significant rise in female hockey, now over 2,000 players and senior hockey gained 310 more players.

The Northeast Minor Hockey Association will host the 2018 Bantam AAA Atlantic Championship being held in the Jack Byrne Arena from April 5-8, 2018.

The Minor Hockey delegates supported the move to discontinue full ice hockey for novice age players between the ages of 7 and 8 for the entire season beginning 2017-2018.  This decision is one year ahead of the national mandate that is coming forward and will require a philosophy change with some members in attempt to align with the Long Term Athlete Development Model.

The 2018 Female Midget AAA Atlantics are being held March 29-April 1, 2018 and will be hosted by the Mount Pearl Minor Hockey Association.

Junior Hockey members will be working on some new awards in the coming year.

Senior Hockey has agreed to eliminate imports in all leagues and categories with the only exception of 1 import goaltender permitted in the Central West League only, effective the 2017-2018 season.

Senior Hockey has increased the number of players per team below the AAA category beginning in the upcoming season.  Teams may now carry up to 28 players after the cut down deadline of January 10th, three more from previous years.

The Board of Directors carried a number of resolutions that will see a change in the role of the executive committee when it comes to the future Strategic Direction of the association and financial management.

Governance Restructuring continues to be a priority of the association, as a number of preliminary proposals have been tabled to the June 2018 Annual General Meeting for a decision.

Hockey NL announced a new generic logo and website for all Atlantic Championships will be in place beginning in 2018.

20170613 - Sportfest 2017 Heading to Gander

June 13, 2017

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Bringing

Sportfest 2017 to Central Newfoundland

Gander, NL - See it. Play it. Get Active. Sport Newfoundland and Labrador is excited to announce that Sportfest 2017 will be held in Gander this June.  This is the 7th annual Sportfest and the first time the event will be held in Central NL, at the Steele Community Centre.

Designed to showcase the diversity of organized sport available to youth in the province, this two-day, fully interactive festival is a one-of-a kind for Newfoundland and Labrador. It allows participants to see various demonstrations and actually try out many different sports for themselves.

“We are very happy to bring Sportfest 2017 to Gander this June,” said Troy Croft, Executive Director for Sport NL. “This event is a fun and unique opportunity to introduce a variety of sports to our province’s youth and open their minds to something new and exciting. Our primary goal is to encourage participation in organized sport, while at the same time educating youth on the many health benefits associated with physical activity.”

Sportfest will host a number of different provincial sport organizations and community groups that will provide information on their respective sports, registration requirements and other fun facts.

The Canadian Olympic Committee will also bring Olympic Day to Sportfest 2017. Sportfest will feature an area dedicated to Olympic Day, where children will have the opportunity to meet several Olympians and interact with them through sport. Olympic Day is an educational and physically interactive event, which calls to action the need to adopt and maintain healthy active lifestyles while living the Olympic Values: Fun; Fairness; Respect; Personal growth; and Leadership.

“SportNL has developed a wonderful working relationship with the Canadian Olympic Committee and we are grateful for their support of Sportfest,” said Croft. “Having Olympians on-hand to interact and inspire the kids is always fantastic. It’s an opportunity like no other.”

As well, Parasport, a very popular component of Sportfest, will engage and enlighten children again this year. Children are encouraged to try out many of the sporting options available to those with physical disabilities. In numerous zones throughout Sportfest, demonstrations will take place on how sports are adjusted and modified for children with disabilities. It’s an educational experience, which promotes inclusion and acceptance.

Sportfest 2017 promises to be a 2-day event full of fun. June 16th will host school children from the Gander Area, and June 17th will be a day open to the public.  For more information, please visit www.sportfestnl.ca
