5th Grade Season Recap
What a great year we had in 2016. We played in 9 tournaments, made it to 6 championship games and won 4 tournaments. We finished 33-9 this spring. Awesome!
We added some guys to the All Time Leaders list this year as well.
Season Leaders:
Points per Game: Jonas Nichols at 13.1 is now 2nd all time.
Rebounds per Game: Jonas Nichols at 10.3 is now 2nd all time
Assists per Game: Kevin Hamilton at 3.5 is now 2nd all time.
3pt %: Owen Snyder at .395 is now 3rd all time.
Single Game Leaders:
Points in a game: Gerelle King and Jonas Nichols with 24 are tied for 2nd all time
Mayhem in Massillon
5/22/16.
5th Grade – Congrats to the Champs as we won our 4th championship of the year! We went 2-0 in pool play as we beat Hoop Guru-Morsillo (64-15) and Air Attack-Wise forfeited. We then beat Stallions (46-29) in the first round and Dribble Dawgs (39-33) in the semis. We beat a tough Century Cage (58-45) in the championship game.
We finished 33-9 on the year.
9th Grade - The White squad went 4-2 and lost in the championship game. The Black squad went 4-1 and lost to the White squad in the semi’s.
We finished a combined 63-24 on the year, including 4 games against each other in playoff games.
Great Lakes Championships
5/15/16.
5th Grade – This one was a disappointing tournament. We went 2-0 in pool play as we beat Murphy AC Blue (51-24) and Air Attack Haney (36-34). We were missing a few guys in our first playoff game and lost to Gurus of Go (49-24).
We are now 28-9 on the year.
9th Grade - The White squad had a tough tournament as they lost their first two pool play games by a combined 3 points. They were missing a few guys as they lost again to finish up pool play. The Black squad went 4-1 as they lost a tough one in the semi’s.
We are now a combined 55-21 on the year, including 3 games against each other in playoff games.
Akron Cage Classic
5/08/16.
5th Grade – Congrats to the Champs! We went 5-0 in this one as we won our 3rd tournament of the year. We beat beat Air Attack-Wise (49-29), ABC (55-24) and Dribble Dawgs (61-54) in pool play. We then beat Red Wave (61-36) in the semis and again beat Dribble Dawgs (46-38) in the championship game.
We are now 26-8 on the year.
9th Grade - Both squads played up in the 10th grade division for this one. The Black squad went 0-2 in pool play before winning a consolation game. The White squad went 2-0 in pool play before losing their first playoff game. It was a great experience to play against older players.
We are now a combined 51-17 on the year, including 3 games against each other in playoff games.
North Coast Championships
5/01/16.
9th Grade - Both squads went undefeated in pool play and bracket play until they met each other in the championship game! The White squad prevailed in a close game. We combined to go 10-1 in this tournament.
We are now a combined 48-14 on the year, including 3 games against each other in playoff games.
King James Shooting Stars Classic
4/24/16.
5th Grade – We got a win in one of the biggest tournaments in the country. We went 0-2 in pool play as we lost to WV Storm (WV) (25-45) and Gary Panthers Elite (IN) (32-36). We then won our first playoff game in the Bronze bracket against Team One Phenoms (39-17). The tournament was then cancelled for the 5th grade as the tournament server went down and there was chaos with the tournament schedule.
We are now 21-8 on the year.
9th Grade - The White squad went 0-2 in pool play. They won their first playoff game in the Bronze bracket before losing to Team Iowa. The Black squad went 1-1 in pool play and advanced to the Gold bracket on a tiebreaker. They then won their first round game and their quarterfinal game. They lost in overtime to WarHawks (IL) in the semifinals.
We are now a combined 38-13 on the year.
Solon Cage Classic
4/17/16.
5th Grade – We had a tough start in this tournament as we went 0-2 in pool play. We lost to TNBA East (41-58) and Ohio Hoopsters (48-60). We then won two playoff games in a row, avenging a previous loss to TNBA West-Silva (48-47) and then beating Top Level All-Stars (47-18). We then lost again to the eventual champs Ohio Hoopsters (31-61) in the semifinals.
We are now 20-6 on the year.
9th Grade - The Black squad went 3-0 in pool play before losing their first playoff game. The White squad also went 3-0 in pool play, including a big win over All Ohio NE (60-55). They won their first playoff game before losing a rematch to All Ohio NE (51-58) in the quarterfinals. The two teams combined to go 7-2.
We are a combined 34-8 on the year.
Ballers Bash
4/10/16.
5th Grade – Congrats to the champs! We went 5-0 again this week to win our second consecutive tournament! We beat Dribble Dawgs (50-45), Air Attack-Wise (48-44) and Blue Storm (41-32) in pool play. We then beat Mid Ohio Pumas for the 2nd week in a row in the semi's (56-42). We then beat a tough Gurus Of Go (53-37) with a complete team effort in the championship game.
We are now 18-3 on the year.
9th Grade - The 2 teams combined to go 9-2 and the Black squad lost in the championship game.
Grizzly Games Tournament
4/03/16.
5th Grade – Congrats to the champs! We went 5-0 in this one and really played well. We beat Air Attack-Collins (37-12), NCOW (43-29) and Centerplex-Sneltzer (34-14) in pool play. We then beat a good Mid Ohio Pumas (53-51) team in a great semifinal win. We came back from a 17 pt second half deficit in what was a classic finish and a complete team effort. Ben, Connor, Jaden & Robby combined to play a great box-n-one defense on their best player. Nate had 12 pts, Gerelle had 8 pts & 13 rebounds, Will had 13 pts, 9 rebounds & 5 assists and Owen had 18 pts. We had to play the championship game 4 minutes later and beat the Dribble Dawgs (62-55). Nate had 12 pts & 10 rebounds, Will had 13 pts, 3 blocks & 3 assists, Owen had 10 pts & 9 rebounds and Gerelle had 24 pts & 14 rebounds. Awesome! We are now 13-3 on the year.
9th Grade - The 2 teams combined to go 9-1 and win a championship! The White squad (Nick Close, Tom Cummings, Jake Gardella, Nick Hussing, Mike Massey, Joe Mehalik, Brad Reece and Amil Stikes-Jenkins) went 3-0 in pool play against Tri County Elite (74-25), Air Attack-Cox (79-19) and Hoop Guru-Lyde (74-10). They then lost to Akron Bobcats-Grosklos (37-43) in the quarterfinals. The Black Squad (Elijah Arnett, Daizhun Brazile, Noah Curtician, Austin Lustik, Mason Marty, Matt Salopek, DJ Snyder, and Spencer Williams) also went 3-0 in pool play. They Northeast Elite (48-33), Air Attack-Waseity (49-30) and Ohio Pelicans (52-32). A nice quarterfinal win against Akron Bobcats-Willis (51-50) on a buzzer beater 3 was followed by a semifinal win against Akron Bobcats-Grosklos (48-36). They had to play Northeast Elite again (51-36) in the championship game. Congrats to the champs!
Spring Shootout Tournament
3/20/16.
5th Grade - We went 5-0 in pool play while winning our pool. We beat Centerplex-Sneltzer (40-13), Highland Hornets (46-23), Hoop Guru-Adkins (29-14), Air Attack-Hainey (16-13) and Youngstown Raiders (38-33). We then beat Air Attack-Wise (37-14) in a nice semifinal win. We lost in the championship game to a good TNBA West-Silva (32-39) for our 2nd runner-up finish in a row. We are now 8-3 on the year.
9th Grade The 2 teams combined to go 9-3 and a runner-up finish.The Black squad (Matt Salopek, Quan Easterling, Jake Gardella, Nick Hussing, Elijah Arnett, Mike Massey and Spencer Williams) went 3-0 in pool play against Air Attack-Dishong (48-10), Ohio Pelicans (31-26) and NEO Fury (38-18). They then beat Team Cure-Brown (42-35) in the quarterfinals before losing to our White squad (40-47). The White Squad (DJ Snyder, Austin Lustik, Noah Curtician, Amil Stikes-Jenkins, Nick Close, Joe Mehalik, Mason Marty and Tommy Cummings for the last 3 games) went 3-1 in pool play. They beat Akron Bobcats-Grosklos (36-17) and Wayne Elite (52-16). They lost to Team Cure (23-26) before finishing pool play with a win against Air Attack-Ehman (48-30). A nice quarterfinal win against Ohio Storm-Murphy (42-32) was followed by the semifinal win against the Black squad. They lost to a decent Team Thunder (38-43) in the championship game.
Akron Tipoff Tournament
3/13/16. We started off the season pretty well with our 5th grade team as we won our pool and advanced to the championship game. We beat the Stallions (40-38) in our very first game. Will Scott had 10 pts, 7 boards & 6 steals, Gerelle King had 7 pts & 10 boards, Owen Snyder had 7 pts and Kevin Hamilton had 6 pts, 4 assists & 5 steals. We then lost to a very good Ohio Stampede (28-54) as Kevin had 16 pts. We beat a good Youngstown Raiders team (56-46) in the semifinals. Kevin had 16 pts, 6 boards & 5 steals, Gerelle had 10 pts, 7 steals & 14 rebounds, Will, Owen and Conner Jones all had 8 pts each in this nice team win. We then lost to Ohio Stampede (39-58) in the championship game. We made a run at them to get within 1 pt in the second half before we ran out of gas. Kevin had 17 pts & 8 rebounds and Will had 6 pts, 9 boards and 4 blocks. Overall a great start to the season as we made it to the championship game and brought home the runner-up hardware in our very first tournament.
