November 30, 2008 11:55:19 AM Entry ID: 1517885 | Another good showing yesterday boys. Although like I spoke to you all about, we need to seriously concentrate on our FIRST TOUCH. As I said, that will be a huge part of our future success. Midfielders did a much better job with what I went over with you all prior to the first game. We will need to rememeber to focus on that player positioning and anticipation. We have had 6 scrimmages since the conclusion of the Fall season and have had very good results in all except one which even in that one there was good play just not great results. Yesterday we managed to go up on the D1 Co-champs in less then 10 actual minutes of playing time until the opposing coach decided they didn't want to continue so even that was a good performance in my opinion. Not sure how many more we will be able to get in due to the weather but I will be trying to keep the North Pole Soccer League in effect :) |

Well Dawgs we ran into an extremely talent group last night without many if any flaws, which is the level we should be striving to be at one day. It may have been hard for you to notice while in the midst of the game but their play showed many of the concepts coach Mike and myself are trying to instill in you boys. Their forwards were constantly making "ANGLED RUNS" Hardly ever Vertical like what is our tendency. Although parents may mean well the "GO GO GO" philosophy and the "TURN & GO" philosophy ( While at midfield ) does NOT work when playing against high quality competition. The ANTICIPATION by their outside midfielders AND outside backs as far as when to make their runs was OUTSTANDING. Our team can do those same runs and do BUT we tend to be slow to react to the possibility of those runs and we get away with being slow to react against lesser quality teams but will not against this level comp. That is part of the whole " Game Awareness & Game Knowledge " part of things. Being "Soccer" smart which I do feel will come the more time this group has to work with and gel with each other. Inside Midfield play got better as the game went along but we need to absolutely concentrate on 2 aspects of responsibility concerning this area of the field ( which we will ) they would be, the over-commitment of BOTH inside guys to one side of the field leaving the middle open ( someone MUST stay home in the middle instead of chasing ) at ALL times. The second thing would be the support play for each other, meaning if one inside Mid has the ball the other can NOT be flat with them while having an opposing player between them, the player without the ball is NOT helping the player with the ball in that situation because you aren't supplying any support that way. THAT absolutely got better after the half, to your credit. Also to your credit after half when I asked you guys as a team to settle down and to stop the panic kicking once again, to make passes to feet and possess the ball, I think you played much much better. Also be aware of the fact that you played a Full 90 minutes plus 3 extra so that is approx. 23 minutes more then you are use to playing. Cristian I feel could have done a better job on the first two scores with a better effort to punch those high balls BUT other then those 2 I feel Cristian was OUTSTANDING last night. Coming off his line more then I have ever seen, without hesitation and a direct result was at least 4 shots going wide of the net. THAT was OUTSTANDING play by Cristian. Nkosi, Savas Anthony and Jonathan played well in the back especially considering we have never really had to try and handle such NUMBERS forward on us before, meaning those guys had lots of players push up into the box ( like it is supposed to be done ). This was a learning experience and nothing more, all these scrimmages are a chance to see how far we have come and yet how far we need to go. This is why I invited a team such as the Scorpions in, which we will be doing again before the regular seasons starts. My whole life I have had the philosophy " To get better you must play against better " so I will try my best to mix these types of teams in. November 15, 2008 6:59:12 PM Entry ID: 1507667 | Another good job today boys !! The temp was great and the rain held off so none of us got wet, which was a plus. Players of the Match would have to be Cristian for his OUTSTANDING play in net. I especially loved the crossed ball that Cristian punched clear out the other side of the 18. In addition the play of Austin also deserves this compliment. Not just because of the amazing run he made after Parker feed him a beautiful ball into the corner that Austin ran down beating the defender, then got past another would-be defender to finally beat the keeper but for his overall approach and effort to the game. I must say the play by our Strikers was much better in general in today's game. Aside from one moment of selfishness I felt they worked well together which was none more apparent then the near perfect give and go between Graham & Emerson. After Graham checked back winning a ball, then playing Emerson as he was checking in, Emerson attempted a one-timer to spring Graham in behind the defense but the defender managed to just get a leg on it. Although it didn't completely work that is how we will get better by trying these plays, eventually the execution will be better and lead to success. One was learn to walk before they run. Mike felt you boys well out played his boys as far as ball movement and positioning went. Their first touches were better then ours but your spacing and movement was better. Nkosi played fantastic in the back in this one, the way he would carry up through their first wave of attack and then find the open man, was awesome stuff. Like I said, another good job. |

November 13, 2008 12:58:13 PM Entry ID: 1506002 | Just wanted to let you boys know that the second half of last nights scrimmage was very very good. We did have a period of about 7 minute prior to the last say 5 minutes or so that got sloppy but aside from that I liked the adjustments you made from the first half. Coach Mike summed it up just like I have on numerous occasions by telling you that you were all too anxious to go forward quickly, playing panic ball. As he said you were playing that first half as if there was only 5 minutes left in the game and you were down by 1 goal but to all of your credit, you settled down and started playing soccer in the second half, very well I might add. Couple of notes, I feel the effort Austin gave last night was the best I have seen out of him, which was nice to see. Zach G. did a much much better job coming back to collect the ball from our defense and midfielders. Zach I had to bust your chops on that super slow roller you sent across the goal line, that thing was rolling so slow I didn't think it was ever going to get there. We as a team need to keep our crosses away from the keeper to give us a better opportunity for to succeed. Overall good workout boys. |

October 13, 2008 7:31:19 AM Entry ID: 1479666 | I feel this weekend was a VERY good showing for our team in a few ways. The level of competition was of very good quality and in which we came away with 2 ties. I am not sure if any of you are aware of this but the team we tied 3-3 is currently rank #4 in NY while the team we played in the second game on saturday is ranked very high in the State of NJ. Our boys displayed some outstanding character in a few different situations this weekend. On saturday they absolutely showed they would not allow themselves to be pushed around by hands down THE dirtiest team EVER. That team made our last league opponent look like choir boys compared to them. While in yesterday's game they showed they really wanted to compete and refused to give up. They did so by taking a early lead and then after losing that lead real late in the game, they could have just laid down because of when it happen as far as it being that late in the game but no, they didn't give up, instead creating several great scoring opportunities until finally one was placed into the net securing a tie against the #4 team in the state. I'd say that was great work and more importantly.....Progress, in more then one aspect of the game. Once again I am very proud of them as you all should be also. |

The situation was awful but Savas stood his ground against those thugs and he has our respect for that. Coach Joe did the right thing by getting us out of there quickly to avoid any other confrontations but I'm glad that we gave those NJ yahoos something to think about. In their minds they probably think they came out on top but it was a tie and if it wasn't for their antics they would have lost that game. |

You should be proud of yourselves that you went toe to toe with a physical team that regretably turned the match dirty because you were beating them at their own game, and it wasn't soccer. Sure it stinks and I feel for each one of you but you better NOT let me see or hear that you let this bring you down or make you think for a milli-second that you are no good at this game or worse, that you failed. A person only truly fails when they give up and I know my guys won't do that EVER, Right ? I'm telling you this, I will kick your butts if I hear/see that stuff. No one person can define any of you so never let that happen. You all have probably heard me say it before but it has way more meaning this evening. " Even Michael Jordan, the greatest basketball player ever to play the game, even he was cut from his High School Basketball team " so don't let it get you down. Besides, what's a Social Studies Teacher know about soccer anyway ????? Oh laugh, that's funny.......I said LAUGH, don't make me come over there !!! |

Words are too weak to describe those feelings that come from my family to the Lawn Dawg family. In all the years that Zachery has been a part of this team, it has built a good portion of the character that Zachery has. He is truly blessed to be thought of so kindly and deeply. As for you, Coach Joe, in taking your fair share of knocks over the years, you have proven time and time again that you have always been supportive in instilling integrity and the desire to fight for the children on your team and have been an amazing mentor in your stride to better the children in just the way you coach. Some people’s misgivings have placed you under the “misunderstood” category at times, but regardless of what other people may feel or think, you have been an integral part of my son’s life. I cannot say again, how proud I am and I’m sure I speak for Zachery and my family as well, to know that your retiring the # 12 is beyond one of the most generous and thoughtful things that you could have done. Once again, thanks for everything……….. The Lugo Family…. |

From everything from the mis-matched socks to the pre-game chant. Just know and never have any doubt, you my friend will be missed. I have decided to do something I never even thought about doing before. In the wake of this decision, the Lawn Dawgs will now have our first Retired Number. The number 12 will never again be worn on the back of any jersey with the Lawn Dawgs logo on it's front. It just wouldn't feel right to me. We'll see you around kid, don't be a stranger. |

We think you are the heart of the Dawgs and we are going to miss you a lot. No matter how your day was going we always knew that you came to eat someones lunch and leave everything on the field every game you played and that is very rare to find in anyone not to mention a 12 year old kid. There is going to be a very big hole in the Lawn Dawgs roster that we don't think anyone could fill and the games are going to be a lot less fun to watch without your presence. We know that you will be succesful in anything you do because of your heart and determination, you can't teach that, you either have it or you don't and buddy you have it! We hope to see you and your great family around. |

August 23, 2008 10:19:46 PM Entry ID: 1445088 | Overall a pretty darn good start today boys !! First half of the first game was pretty sloppy but that was to be expected. Early start, first game playing together, missing a few key guys....It wasn't shocking. The highlight of the first half being Emerson's beautiful finish of AJ's perfectly lofted cross. It was a great connection between the two of them. Second half saw us passing the ball better and switching fields while utilizing the overlapping runs by the outside backs. Getting it to occur was a little forced but once we get it down it is going to be a huge part of the attack. Second goal came via a switch and I apologize because I am not sure who did send the ball from our right to our left hitting Emerson as he checked to the ball while Jonathan made an overlapping halfback run that Emerson not only recognized but executed a perfect through ball pass to leading Jonathan into a goal scoring opportunity which Jonathan finished with a blast near post beating the keeper. Our final goal I believe Cristian gets the assist on with a punt to AJ who used his speed to drive behind the defense and force the keeper off his line. Once that happen AJ shot the ball over the keepers head and into the back of the net. The only goal against was the result of a penalty kick that was awarded. Our second game saw the passing get better but the intensity level fell way off. As we spoke about, we didn't win any free balls because we were too slow to react and didn't go to the ball. We had numerous scoring opportunity's ( someone said 22 and he said it with conviction so I'll take him at his word ) while the other team basically had 2 and the scoring one was due to a mistake by us. I look forward to our league game against them because I feel the result will be much different. The final game of the day produced the best game BY FAR !!!! The intensity was way way up. The desire to win was obvious and the way you boys worked the ball to create opportunity after opportunity was just awesome to watch. We had 2 players that were missing in the first game join us for this game and the 2nd one which made a difference. I feel we dominated this game in every way. We could have easily blown the scoring wide open but hopefully that will come as you boys all gel together more. First goal was created by Jonathan's incredible determination to get off a blistering cross which travel directly across the top of the 6 yard line where it found Austin checking to the ball and flicked the ball into the far side netting with the outside of his right foot. That was a well manufactured goal and pretty finish. Second goal came from Jonathan's free kick toward goal where Zach Graham won the loose ball and finished it off to push the score to 2-0 which is the way it ended. Overall I am pleased with today's results and excited to start the season. |
