The Scouting America Religious Emblems Program

The Scouting America Religious Emblems Program encourages Scouts to explore and strengthen their faith as part of their overall personal growth and character development. Rather than being created by Scouting America itself, these emblems are administered by various religious organizations and are available to youth and adults of many different faith traditions. Scouts work with parents, religious emblem counselors, and faith leaders to complete age-appropriate requirements that focus on learning, reflection, service, and living out the values of their beliefs. While participation is entirely voluntary, earning a religious emblem is one of the few achievements that may be worn on the Scout uniform across all ranks and programs, highlighting the importance Scouting places on duty to God alongside duty to country, others, and self.

The Catholic Religious Emblems Program

Troop 318 has historically run the Catholic religious emblems program every other year, and will offer the program in 2026.

The program is made up of Ad Altare Dei, and Pope Pius XII. Scouts who received all four Catholic religious emblems (Light of Christ [Grades K-1], Parvuli Dei [Grades 2-5], Ad Altare Dei or Light of Life, and Pope Pius XII) are eligible for the Pillars of Faith award.

We will meet at Tinley Park Public Library (7851 Timber Dr, Tinley Park, IL 60477) on select Sundays from 1:30-3:30pm. See the dates below.

Dates: 4/26, (no May mtg), 6/7, 7/19. 8/23, 9/13, 9/26 (Day of Reflection), 10/3 (Fishers of Men-optional), 10/18, 11/8

Attendance at all meetings is mandatory as is the combined group Day of Reflection / Retreat at the Slovenian Catholic Mission/St. Mary's Seminary in Lemont on 9/26. (The only alternative option would be to attend the Day of Reflection held in Schaumburg on 9/12).

There will be a Board of Review Thursday, December 10th at St. Stephen Deacon & Martyr in Tinley Park (approx 6pm-TBD). (there are other options that same week further away).

There will be an award ceremony for emblem presentation at Holy Name Cathedral on Sunday 2/7/27 at 3pm.

The emblems program is to help Catholic Scouts develop a fully Christian way of life and is organized in chapters based on the Sacraments.

It is not a substitute for any formal religious education program offered by the Scout's Parish.

To be eligible to participate in this program the Scout must meet the following criteria:

1. Have been baptized into the Catholic faith (Roman Catholic or Eastern Catholic Rite-Light is Life in place of AAD)

2. Are members of the BSA in a Scout Troop, Venturing Crew, or Sea Scout Ship.

3. Have been registered in their unit for at least 6 months

4. Have COMPLETED the 6th grade (current 6th graders welcome if parent think scout is ready for thoughtful discussion)

Ad Altare Dei is designed for 13-14 year olds but older Scouts (15-20) who have not achieved this emblem are welcome.

Pope Pius XII is open to all Catholic High Schoolers and can be earned by Crew members up to the age of 20.

If you are interested in the Catholic Religious Emblem program please sign up on the Troop website by April 15th so that materials can be ordered.
